Dipa Karmakar has been hogging the limelight ever since her bronze-medal winning feat at the Commonwealth Games. At Glasgow, she became India’s first woman gymnast to win a CWG medal. Dipa is looking forward to carry on her form at the Asian Games but she is racing against time to be fully fit.The injury in her right ankle which she suffered at Glasgow is preventing her from giving her all in training. But Dipa sounds hopeful that the injury will not be a hindrance to her participation.”I hurt my ankle during the CWG on the first day of the competition. I have not been able to give much time for recovery and there are only two weeks left now,” Dipa told Mail Today.”I have cut down a bit on my training because I do not want to aggravate the injury. We have four apparatus, but I am focussing more on vaulting table which is my strength. I feel some problem during the landing so I am practicing in foam pit. The treatment is on and my aim is still to give my best,” said the Tripura girl. She points out why a medal at the Asian games is so important to her. “When Ashish bhaiya (Ashish Kumar) won medals in 2010 CWG and then the Asian Games, boys’ gymnastics got a fillip. So I wanted to do the same for girls’ gymnastics. I have the same target of winning medals at the CWG and the Asian Games.”The competition will be tougher at the Incheon Asian Games but Dipa is looking to excel. “It will be tough but it is not like we cannot do it. The medal at the Commonwealth Games has given me immense confidence. In CWG, the top gymnasts are from Australia, Canada and England to compete against. In Asian Games too there are three countries–China, Japan, and Korea against whom we will have a stiff competition. But it is not that we cannot match their standards. If we play to our potential we can definitely win medals in the Asian Games too. We are looking to win 2-3 medals.”advertisementLife has changed for Dipa after her success at Glasgow. “People have started to know me and it is good to see that gymnastics is getting popular. I am proud of the fact that I was able to perform a difficult vault (Produnova vault) successfully at the CWG. People appreciated me there after that after that. It is very difficult to get the landing right in that but I got it right.””I am thankful to SAI and the federation. SAI has been a big support. I was able to learn and practice the Produnova vault only after the pit that was built at IG stadium.”email@example.com
Smriti Mandhana slammed the joint-fastest fifty in women’s T20s during the Women’s Cricket Super League 2018 match at the Cooper Associates County Ground in Taunton.Playing for Western Storm, she slammed an unbeaten 52 off 19 balls to guide her team to a total of 85/2 from their six overs in a rain-truncated match against the Loughborough Lightning.Mandhana, 22, brought up her fifty off just 18 balls to smash her first fifty of the tournament. Earlier, New Zealand’s Sophie Devine had slammed a half-century off 18 balls against India. This was also the fastest fifty in the history of the tournament.Mandhana smashed five fours and four maximums in her knock of 19 balls. Her whirlwind knock in the end turned out be crucial for the Storms as they managed to restrict the Lightnings for 67/0 from their six overs and win the match by 18 runs. Devine’s 21-ball 46 wasn’t enough to guide the Lightnings over the line.Mandhana was also awarded the player-of-the-match award for her brisk knock. She now has 11 sixes in the tournament, the most by any women in the history of the tournament in any season. West Indies’ Stafanie Taylor and New Zealand’s Rachel Priest had smashed nine each in 2016 and 2017 respectively. Smriti Mandhana hit her fifty off 18 balls against the Loughborough Lightning (Getty Images)With the win, the Storms are second in the points table with two wins from three games. The Georgia Elwiss-led Loughborough Lightning are on top because of a better net run-rate.Mandhana, the first and only Indian women player to play in the T20 competition in England this year, has been in great form so far. She has hit 137 in three matches so far in the tournament.advertisementMandhana has also played for Brisbane Heat in the Women’s Big Bash League in Australia before this captained the IPL Trailblazers in the one-off exhibition game organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India against the IPL Supernovas in April. She has been one of India’s star women cricketers recently and has hit 1464 runs from 41 ODIs, including three centuries and 11 fifties. She has also played 42 T20Is for India and has scored 857 runs at an average of 23.16.
India began their journey in the Hockey World Cup on Wednesday by thrashing South Africa 5-0 at the Kalinga Stadium but captain Manpreet Singh said they will try to give minimum chances to World number three Belgium in their next match.”Overall, we played a good game but we still need to improve. We got many chances in the match but we missed them. We could not convert many of the penalty corners. Our next match is with Belgium and we should not miss the crucial chances,” Manpreet said.”Belgium are a good side. They have the ability to punish us for our mistakes. We need to keep our defence strong against them,” he added.India’s next game is against Belgium on December 2. The match is going to be a high-voltage one as Belgium also thrashed Canada by 2-1 in the opening match.Indian team coach head coach Harendra Singh said a mixture of penalty corners (PCs) and field goals ensured the win for India.”No goal was scored against India (/search?query=India) which is a good sign for us. It indicates that our defence was good in the match. The penalty corner conversion rate, however, needs to be improved,” Harendra said.He also talked about the changed role of forward player Akashdeep Singh in the team saying with his ability to eliminate one or two players while on the run is lethal for opponents.”Yes, we have changed his role as this is the demand of the team. He has got the skill and capacity to eliminate one or two players on the run. It becomes lethal for the opponents as we have three strikers who keep floating inside the circle to grab the scoring opportunity. I am happy that he is playing his role pretty well. I hope he continues doing this,” he said.advertisementThree field goals and two penalty corners helped World No.5 India register a comprehensive win in the second match of the evening.World number five India are eyeing to reclaim the World Cup after 43 years, a title which they won only once way back in 1975 in Kuala Lumpur.Simranjeet Singh (43rd, 46th minutes) scored a brace, while Mandeep Singh (10th), Akashdeep Singh (12th) and Lalit Upadhyay (45th) were the other goal getters for India against a South Africa, ranked 10 places below India. The Indians toyed with the South African defence in the first quarter as they mounted numerous attacks on the opposition goal and to their credit succeeded on two occasions to take a comfortable 2-0 lead early on.(With IANS inputs)Also Read | Hockey World Cup 2018: India hammer hapless South Africa for perfect startAlso Read | Hockey World Cup India vs South Africa: HighlightsAlso Read | Hockey World Cup 2018: FULL COVERAGE | FULL SQUADS | SCHEDULE
Marseille added there had been “unacceptable behaviour” from some fans who subjected Evra and his team-mates to “hateful attacks” but said: “As a professional and experienced player, Patrice Evra could not respond in such an inappropriate way.”Evra is almost certain to face a more severe sanction from Uefa following scenes reminiscent of Eric Cantona’s kung-fu kick at Selhurst Park in 1995.Video footage showed Evra aiming the kick at the Marseille fan as visiting players and supporters, who had seemingly scaled barriers to reach the advertising hoardings at the Estádio D Afonso Henriques in Guimarães, confronted each other at the side of the pitch. He was then ushered away by a team-mate.The Marseille manager, Rudi García, revealed afterwards that Evra had reacted to taunts from the fans but he still criticised his actions.“Pat has experience and he must not react, it’s obvious,” García said. “Patrice is a more than experienced player and we cannot respond to insults so low and so incredible because they come from one of our supporters.”Of the fan García said: “He is not a supporter of OM, because you cannot insult your own players, you have to be behind everyone.”Evra, a former France captain who won five Premier League titles and the Champions League during an eight-year spell with United, joined Marseille from Juventus in January. He has made only two appearances for the club in all competitions this season. The governing body has charged Marseille with breaches of Article 16 of its disciplinary regulations: namely the “field invasion by supporters, the setting-off of fireworks and acts of damages”. Europa League Share on Pinterest Marseille news Marseille have suspended the defender Patrice Evra after he aimed a kick at one of the club’s supporters before Thursday’s Europa League tie at Vitoria.Uefa earlier confirmed it had opened disciplinary proceedings against Evra following the incident and his club have now taken action.“Jacques-Henri Eyraud, president of Marseille, met Patrice Evra today and informed him of his lay-off with immediate effect and a summons to an interview prior to a possible disciplinary sanction,” a statement from the French club said. The former Manchester United player, named as a substitute for Marseille’s fixture away to Vitoria, lashed out at the fan in a heated confrontation before Thursday night’s match in Portugal.Evra was sent off and on Friday Uefa announced the 36-year-old would miss “at least one match”, with the organisation’s disciplinary body set to discuss his case at its next meeting on 10 November. Being a role model for the youth across the country and having judged and mentored young talented kids on television, I feel a programme like this running at the grass-root level where gender stereotypes are common, is much-needed. It has the potential to be a real game-changer and hence as a public figure and role model, I take this as my responsibility to promote and support this program so that it can reach a wider audience.”The CMCM programme by British Council has been piloted in other Indian cities already and has received tremendous success on sensitisation and delivery parameters.Pilot projects have demonstrated that the ‘cricket-dance’ methodology is a unique concept that has the potential to be gender transformative.advertisementAround 90 percent of students are participating as they have preferred cricket and dance to be taught together over individual dance or cricket classes and 98 percent of children felt that teachers showed no partiality in the delivery of the CMCM class which is a testament to the success of the project. While over 80 Master Trainers have been trained across Odisha, Maharashtra, Delhi, Chennai and Bangalore so far, the current programme is the largest CMCM programme in India so far with an aim to train over 120 Master Trainers in the city. Also read: UK authorities impressed by Indian education policyAlso read: This new India-UK scheme will fund UK students to visit India for higher studiesGet real-time alerts and all the news on your phone with the all-new India Today app. Download from Post your comment Do You Like This Story? Editors’ Recommendations In order for a book to be great, two elements are essential: good writing and an interesting subject. Superlative writing can hold the attention for a time even if the focus of said prose is decidedly prosaic. Witness David Foster Wallace’s sublime review of a dictionary as evidence, were any needed. Though we must also accept that, at some point, our interest would wander had DFW made a book out of his writeup about a book. And a fascinating, compelling subject can hold a reader’s attention for a good number of paragraphs even if the writing itself is poor. Take, for example, posts you have read on various social media platforms.Again, to be great, a book must be well-written and about something interesting. You might not have know that rain was interesting. And prior to the publication of her recent book Rain: A Natural and Cultural History, you might not have heard of Cynthia Barnett, so you could be forgiven for not knowing whether or not she is a writer worth your time. If you’ll take my two cents, here the are: One, rain, as it turns out, is interesting — fascinating even. And penny number two: Cynthia Barnett is a damn good writer.Barnett brings an interesting background to her subject matter here; she cut her teeth as a newspaper reporter, writing both regular columns and doing investigative journalism. Her past experience shows through in her ability to use crisp, well-paced prose to advance the narrative, giving us enough detail to bring clarity without waxing on ad nauseum and losing our focus. While not all of her writing was about environmental matters, much of it trended in that direction. And her passion both within and beyond the bounds of her professional work has always been defined by environmental matters, with water at the heart of her interests. Fortunately, for those of us with less knowledge of and/or aptitude for matters of universal, global concern, Barnett is also committed to making both the plight and the potential remedies for matters related to conservation and environmental protection accessible to a general audience. In other words, don’t worry if you don’t have master’s degree in environmental science or policy — you will still enjoy Rain. And you will easily learn from it.This fast-paced, 292-page book starts back about 4.5 billion years ago when the Earth was a superheated, lifeless ball of fire, soon to be a planet bearing water as delivered by untold millions of meteors crashing into the surface. These celestial missiles weren’t bringers or death, however, but of life, and Barnett doesn’t just tell us that, but instead paints a picture with her words:“About half a billion years after it started, the blitzkrieg began to wind down. As the last of the flaming chunks fell to the surface or hurtled away, the planet finally had a chance to cool. The water vapor could condense. At long last, it began to rain.”Reading this book, which brings the author (and her reader) from Scotland to the American South to coastal India to myriad points in between, one begins to see rain not merely as a nuisance for the city dweller or a lifeline for the farmer; not as a bringer of death in the form of floods when too much falls or of suffering during drought when too little comes; and not as inspiration for the poet, painter, or songwriter. Rain is none of those things alone, but is rather the universal factor binding all life, human, animal, and flora together. Barnett reveals this both with casual anecdotes — for example, there is, at any given moment, more water in the atmosphere than in all the world’s rivers combined — and through compelling accounts of her own firsthand travels and experiences. One thing Barnett’s book does not do is sound a five-alarm warning about the imminent collapse of the entire global ecosystem, or about the coming pandemics sure to be caused by a lack of sufficient clean water, or other such grim, gloom-and-doom forecasts. Yes, she is an environmentalist and, yes, she’s concerned about our planet and the way we have long been treating it. While reading Rain will likely compel you to be a bit more thoughtful in your use of water and might even get you to be more actively involved in conservation efforts, it’s not an indictment in the way other notable environmental-themed works are (to name the obvious choice, Silent Spring). Rather this is simply a very good book about a surprisingly compelling subject that will certainly entertain and just might inspire. When the rain does come, stay dry with the best hiking gear, rubber boots, and umbrellas. Chandigarh: A flood-like situation prevailed in many parts of Punjab and Haryana where the Indian Air Force on Monday rescued nine persons stuck in Karnal district due to sudden rise of water in the River Yamuna. While the Meteorological Department said no heavy rainfall was reported in most parts of the two states on Monday morning, the two states had received heavy rains during the past three days. Assisted by the Karnal Police, the Indian Air Force rescued nine persons including women and children who had got stuck in Karnal. Also Read – India gets first tranche of Swiss bank a/c details The rescue operation was carried out by the IAF in the early hours of Monday despite adverse weather, Haryana’s Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Navdeep Singh Virk said. Keeping in view the alarming situation due to release of 2.4 lakh cusecs of water from Ropar headwork, Deputy Commissioner Jalandhar, Varinder Kumar Sharma has ordered the stationing of companies of National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Relief Force (SDRF) at vulnerable points in Shahkot, Nakodar and Phillaur. Also Read – Tourists to be allowed in J&K from Thursday The Deputy Commissioner, who along with senior police officials inspected the level of water at Phillaur bridge and at village Danewal in Shahkot, on Monday said that 50 expert swimmers and divers of NDRF have been stationed at Shahkot. 42 expert swimmers and divers of SDRF have been stationed at Nakodar Sub Division. The Jalandhar Deputy Commissioner said Army authorities have also been requested to station their columns at all these Sub Divisions in the district so that they could help the administration in case of any need. Rescue centres have been established in every Sub Division where requisite provisions of food and shelter have been made. Besides, medical teams have been deployed at all centres for providing medical assistance to the evacuees. Sharma had earlier asked the sub-divisional magistrates Phillaur, Nakodar and Shahkot to get 81 low-lying and flood-prone villages evacuated to save them from fury of floods. Jalandhar district authorities have asked people living near the swollen Sutlej River and low-lying areas to remain alert following the release of excess water from the Bhakra Dam. In the Yamuna River, water level had risen dangerously at the Hathni Kund barrage in Yamuna Nagar, Haryana on Sunday evening. Haryana’s Department of Revenue and Disaster Management issued a high flood warning on Sunday alerting deputy commissioners of Karnal, Panipat, Sonipat, Faridabad and Palwal. The Yamuna River discharge at 6 pm on Sunday was 8,28,072 cusecs, which is categorised as a “high flood” situation, officials said. There were reports that rain water had entered a village in Yamunanagar on Monday and people were being evacuated. All the deputy commissioners of the five Haryana districts have been requested to keep a close watch on the situation and keep their disaster management resources on high readiness to tackle any adverse situation. In Punjab, floods were reported from areas like Rupnagar, Fatehgarh Sahib and Pathankot. Authorities have also ordered closure of schools in Rupnagar on Monday. The Punjab government had on Friday issued a high alert in the state after a forecast of heavy rainfall in next 48 to 72 hours. Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has directed all deputy commissioners in the state to monitor the situation closely. The chief minister himself is keeping close tabs on the situation, officials said. He has instructed field officers of revenue, drainage, health, food and animal husbandry departments to stay alert and prepared to handle any eventuality arising out of heavy rains.
OTTAWA — Canada’s export credit agency says it regrets a 2015 decision to lend US$41 million to a South African company owned by members of a family with ties to former president Jacob Zuma.Export Development Canada executive vice-president Carl Burlock says in the months and years that followed, the agency became increasingly concerned about the loan it provided to Westdawn Investments to backstop the sale of Bombardier aircraft. Over that time, Burlock says in a statement, allegations related to corruption and political interference were mounting against members of the Gupta family, which owns the company. He says EDC ended its business relationship with Westdawn in late 2017 and the company has responded by filing a lawsuit in the United Kingdom against the agency to contest the deal’s termination.Burlock says the agency’s decision to support the purchase was in line with its international commitments under the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, and that it relied on the fact there were no formal charges or active investigations related to the allegations.Zuma resigned as South Africa’s president in 2018 after a near-decade-long tenure marked by persistent corruption allegations. SAGINAW, Mich. — A bright mural welcomes people to downtown Saginaw, where a new indoor market opened along the riverfront last year — part of the city’s decades-long effort to reinvent itself after the auto industry started leaving. Inside the market, vendors sell falafel, fresh-baked pies and T-shirts.For Mike Wilson, who sells sports cards and collectibles, it’s a sign that mid-Michigan has adapted since the days when his father and all four of his grandparents worked for General Motors. He says President Donald Trump — whom he supports “100%” — deserves credit.“When people can spend what they’re spending with us you know it’s going well, because what we sell isn’t cheap,” says Wilson, 46.But at the soul food booth just around the corner, Denise Anderson is still searching for the life Trump promised.“I haven’t seen it,” Anderson said as she served up fried catfish. Things “felt better” when Barack Obama was president and her brother could get health care, she says. The contrasting views are at the heart of the battle for Michigan, a state that helped Trump win the White House in 2016 and that both the president and Democrats agree he must hold to win a second term. It’s among Democrats’ top 2020 targets, along with Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, and its 16 electoral votes and diverse electorate are a reason Democrats will hold one of their presidential primary debates in Detroit on Tuesday and Wednesday.Whether Trump can win again may hinge on a list of unknowns, including turnout on Election Day and which Democrat emerges from a crowded field of candidates. It also rests on how voters see the economic health of a state cautiously eyeing a slowdown in the auto industry, which cuts to the core of Trump’s promise to Michigan four years ago.The president came to Saginaw County and vowed to revive manufacturing here, part of his vision of returning America to an earlier moment of greatness. In Michigan, a state trying to regain the roughly 1 million jobs lost from its peak in 2000, the message resonated. But there was never a plan behind Trump’s promise. His economic policies have brought only slight manufacturing growth and his trade policies may actually have harmed it. Still, Trump is presiding over a stretch of larger growth in other sectors. The overall impact is an uneven economy and a clash over whether Trump should be getting credit or blame.Trump’s path to a second victory in Michigan runs through working-class places like Saginaw County, about 100 miles northwest of Detroit. In 2016 Trump became the first GOP presidential nominee to carry it since Ronald Reagan’s 1984 landslide. His success here — and in the 11 other Michigan counties that supported Obama and then Trump — was significant. Democrat Hillary Clinton received about 10,000 fewer votes in Saginaw County than Obama did in his 2012 win. Trump won Michigan by just over 10,700 votes. For much of the 20th century, Michigan was relatively prosperous thanks to a strong manufacturing sector, and the state largely supported Republicans for president. Then, boosted by a strong labour influence, the state in the early 1990s became part of the Democratic “blue wall” that supported Democrats for president, even as the GOP dominated state races. The state swung again after Trump’s win in 2016, giving Democrats every statewide office on the midterm ballot along with two more congressional seats. The electorate’s mood next year is the subject of intense speculation.Michigan is again seeing hiring gains and benefiting from the strong stock market. Detroit is growing again after leaving bankruptcy, and the aerospace and cybersecurity industries have expanded. Manufacturing is up slightly, but now accounts for only about 20% of the state’s jobs, down from half in the 1960s.The auto industry, meanwhile, is trying to find its way through rapid changes that include a huge shift by consumers away from cars to trucks and SUVs, and massive investments in electric and autonomous vehicles that may not pay off for years. As a result, there have been cuts. Ford recently let go of 2,300 white-collar workers in Michigan as it downsized, while General Motors cut about 8,000 engineers and others, many through retirement offers and layoffs at its sprawling technical centre north of Detroit. GM also announced plans to close four U.S. plants and shed about 3,000 jobs, including 265 at a car transmission factory in Warren, Mich., near Detroit that will shut down Thursday. Most of those workers were placed at other plants, but face long commutes or relocation. However, Michigan’s poverty rate is 14.2%, higher than the national mark of 12.3%. And it still ranks in the bottom half of states in percentage of residents with college degrees. While Michigan’s per capita personal income is higher, the income of the median household, adjusted for inflation, is still well below what it was in 1999, with African Americans faring the worst.“Unemployment continues to drop,” said Charles Ballard, an economics professor at Michigan State University, at 3.9% in May, “but a lot of those jobs are just so-so jobs.”The disparity is especially clear in places like Saginaw County, which is about 70% white, and where growth has lagged upscale areas such as Grand Rapids, Ann Arbor and Traverse City, which have attracted highly educated residents, high-tech jobs and tourism.GM once employed roughly 25,000 people in Saginaw County, including at GM-owned Saginaw Steering. Today those jobs have largely been replaced by work in the service industry, where wages are lower and benefits spotty. With four hospitals and a medical school, the area is increasingly a medical nexus for the region, and it is trying to attract more tourists with a sports complex for hosting tournaments.Analysts are issuing warnings about the impacts of Trump’s trade policy. The Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor said that while there are many moving pieces, the likely outcomes “are all profoundly negative for consumers, for new vehicle dealership revenue and employment, and for overall U.S. economic output and employment levels.”Angie Miller, president of the Mid-Michigan Area Labor Council in Saginaw, said there are a lot of workers like herself who “grind it out every day” but don’t feel like they’re further ahead.“I don’t sit at home and watch the stock market. I don’t see more money in my bank account,” said Miller, who works in the telecom industry. “Maybe if you’re a business owner you feel differently.”It’s not clear how this good-bad picture will translate politically in light of Michigan’s pattern of pendulum swings.Miller said the labour council will begin registering voters soon to try to unseat Trump next fall. She said she’s been buoyed by the activism she’s seen, including dozens of local people who boarded buses outside a Saginaw shopping mall to attend a 2017 march in Washington, D.C.Labor isn’t the force it once was. Union members were just slightly more likely than other voters to support Democrats in 2018. Six in 10 union voters supported Democratic candidates in House races, according to AP VoteCast, a survey of more than 115,000 midterm voters nationwide.Other groups are jumping in. Priorities USA, the largest Democratic outside group, said it is spending $300,000 to $450,000 a week on digital advertising in four swing states, including Michigan, and will focus its message on wages and health care. The group’s head, Guy Cecil, said winning Michigan will require turning out Democrats who did not vote in 2016 and targeting persuadable voters in the middle.“We think there are a lot of those voters,” he said, citing younger voters and black voters. In Detroit, a Democratic stronghold, about 41,000 fewer people voted compared with Obama’s 2012 re-election. Statewide, 84,290 people who voted in 2016 did not cast a ballot for president — a measure of discontent with the candidates.Much depends on which candidate Democrats nominate. In 2016, some people just didn’t like Hillary Clinton, whose husband, former President Bill Clinton, signed the North American Free Trade Agreement, which many workers blamed for lost jobs, said Mike Hanley, a former United Auto Workers official who campaigned in rural parts of Saginaw County.“People would say ‘don’t come up here if you’re with her,’” Hanley said.Wilson, who owns Curveball Sportscards & Collectibles, said he backed Trump because he wasn’t a politician, and he had turned “a small amount” of money he received from his father into “a huge amount.” Trump has denied reports that he received far more from his father than he claims. Wilson also said that as a Christian he supports Trump’s stand against abortion. He’s expecting a close election and another Trump victory.“It’s kind of hard to take somebody out the way things are going,” Wilson said.___Associated Press reporters David Eggert in Lansing and Tom Krisher in Detroit contributed.Sara Burnett, The Associated Press
“This is an individual who has been responsible for many heinous crimes, caused lots of problems in Iraq for the Government and the people of Iraq – the people of Iraq who are afraid to step out, the people of Iraq who are only demanding peace, stability, and to have their streets back,” Mr. Annan told reporters at a press encounter.“I think they will all be relieved that he is gone. And of course, we cannot pretend that that will mean the end of the violence. But it is a relief that such a heinous and dangerous man who has caused so much harm to the Iraqis is no longer around to continue his work.”Asked whether he thought Mr. Zarqawi might stray somewhat dangerously close to the line drawn by the Geneva Convention against targeted assassinations, he replied that Iraq was a war zone.“And there are lots of groups fighting with each other. There are lots of militias, armies and others. And with Zarqawi, if it is him indeed who has been killed, has been at war. He’s been in a fight. So I don’t think you can equate it to targeted assassination of the kind that we have seen elsewhere,” Mr. Annan said.
Google’s YouTube losing major advertisers upset with videos by Michael Liedtke, The Associated Press Posted Mar 22, 2017 4:57 pm MDT Last Updated Mar 22, 2017 at 6:20 pm MDT AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email SAN FRANCISCO – AT&T, Verizon and several other major advertisers are suspending their marketing campaigns on Google’s YouTube site after discovering their brands have been appearing alongside videos promoting terrorism and other unsavoury subjects. The spreading boycott confronts Google with a challenge that threatens to cost it hundreds of millions of dollars.YouTube’s popularity stems from its massive and eclectic library of video, spanning everything from polished TV clips to raw diatribes posted by people bashing homosexuals. But that diverse selection periodically allows ads to appear next to videos that marketers find distasteful, despite Google’s efforts to prevent it from happening.Google depends largely on automated programs to place ads in YouTube videos because the job is too much for humans to handle on their own. About 400 hours of video is now posted on YouTube each minute.Earlier this week, Google vowed to step up its efforts to block ads on “hateful, offensive and derogatory” videos.“We know that this is unacceptable to the advertisers and agencies who put their trust in us,” Philipp Schindler, Google’s chief business officer, wrote in a Tuesday blog post.As part of Google’s solution to the problem, Schindler promised to hire “significant numbers” of employees to review YouTube videos and flag them as inappropriate for ads. He also predicted YouTube would be able to address advertisers’ concerns through Google’s recent advancements in artificial intelligence — technology parlance for computers that learn to think like humans. But that promise so far hasn’t appeased AT&T, Verizon Communications and an expanding global list of advertisers that includes Volkswagen, Audi, HSBC Holdings, the Royal Bank of Scotland and L’Oreal.“We are deeply concerned that our ads may have appeared alongside YouTube content promoting terrorism and hate,” AT&T said in a statement. “Until Google can ensure this won’t happen again, we are removing our ads from Google’s non-search platforms.”By extending its ban to everything beyond Google’s search results, AT&T is also effectively pulling its ads from more than two million other websites that depend on Google to deliver ads to their pages. In its statement, Verizon said it decided to pull ads from YouTube to protect its website while it investigates the “weak links” among its digital advertising partners. Both AT&T and Verizon may have an ulterior motive to make YouTube look like an untrustworthy spot for marketers because both companies are trying to sell more digital ads in their own networks.YouTube has become one of the fastest growing parts of Google’s ad system, which generated $79 billion in revenue last year. Google doesn’t disclose how much of that came from YouTube ads, but the research firm eMarketer estimated that the video site accounted for $5.6 billion that amount. EMarketer projected YouTube’s advertising will rise 26 per cent this year to $7 billion, but that prediction came before marketers began to suspend their spending. The YouTube boycott began late last week after an investigation by The Times in London revealed the ads of major brands were appearing in videos delving into contentious themes.
Lebron James declared his support for the re-election of President Barack Obama Monday night, despite being advised beforehand making his vow publicly could be “bad for the brand.”James makes millions of dollars each year off his endorsements, Nike being his biggest endorser. Nike, along with other endorsers, felt that announcing his backing of the President would be a negative reflection to the deals that he has in place.“I’ve been second guessed,” James said after Monday’s 124-99 victory over the Phoenix Suns on the eve of election. “They’re saying it’s bad for the brand. If I feel like I want to support someone, then go for it.”James signed a seven-year, $93 million contract with Nike in May 2003. In March 2010 the brand signed him to an extension for an undisclosed amount.James has made it known that he is not afraid to take a stand as an athlete.“I just think it’s about knowledge if you know what’s going on,” James said. “I’ve always said I feel like it’s important for me to do it because that’s just who I am. I got out there and I learned a lot about it in ’08 and I learned a lot about it now.”In 2008, the three-time NBA MVP said he researched Obama before voting for him, but adds he has done the same this time around.Heat president Pat Riley and James are on two different sides of the aisle when dealing with politics. Riley has donated $2,500 to Republican challenger Mitt Romney.James was asked if he thought about throwing an event such as Bruce Springsteen did to rally support for Obama. The NBA champion said that his busy schedule during the summer, preseason and now regular season have prohibited him from being able to organize an event.“It’s kind of late now, but I’ve been able to send out a few tweets and support (Obama),” he said. “But I’m supporting him and I think his camp knows that and everybody that knows me knows that.”James is glad that he did not let endorsers influence his decision to speak out, but issued a challenge to everyone who can vote and hasn’t voted.“I think it’s a very important election for everyone,” James said. “Everyone, they talk about having a right to vote. Just don’t talk about it, actually go out and do it. And let your voice be heard, and I’m happy to be in the position I am.”

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is certain that his squad can repeat their feats for next seasonThe Catalan secured his first Premier League title on Sunday after Manchester United’s shock 1-0 defeat to West Brom confirmed City as the new champions. It marked what has truly been a dominant season at the Etihad Stadium with City having only lost two games all season and they are currently on the verge of breaking Chelsea’s points record of 95 points over the course of a single season, as well as their own record for most goals scored in a single season at 103.But Guardiola, whose side contain many young regular starters, is adamant that City have the potential to learn from their experiences from the past year and build on it for more glory in the future.“Sergio [Aguero] is a genius, a top player but about 30 years old but the others are 21, 22 so we won with guys that are so young,” said Guardiola, according to Manchester Evening News.“Playing in the Champions League at that age is sometimes complicated and maybe it’s a good lesson for them for the future and for next season.”While repeating the same feats that City have achieved this season will be difficult, Guardiola has refused to rule out the prospect.Report: City are stunned by Norwich George Patchias – September 14, 2019 Manchester City was stunned by Norwich City in todays Premier League clash.Much has been made in recent days of the potential impact of Aymeric…“We will have to try,” answered the 47 year-old when asked.“If you read what people said this week we have a lot to improve. You cannot deny that you are judged on results, okay that’s what it is, but you cannot deny we were good this season, we were good every single day.“To make 18 wins in a row you have to be mentally strong and they again [against Tottenham] showed me how strong they are and this is important to help build up this club a little bit higher.“Manchester City is not like United or Chelsea – the big clubs in England have trophies and a lot of history behind them.“Sometimes you have to do these sort of things to believe ‘wow, we are good too, like the others’.“The way we played helped us reach our target.“Of course next season it’s not going to happen the same, it’s impossible. It’s the target to say we were able to to that and if we are able to do it once then we are able to do it twice so we have to try to be constant next season.

(Phys.org) —The market for thin, flexible, printed electronic circuits is potentially huge. Although tremendous advances have been made in printing organic semiconductors like thin-film transistors (TFTs), one of their present limitations is a relatively high operating voltage requirement. 3D printed lithium-ion batteries with acceptable single-cell potentials (~3V) have been previously demonstrated, at least on small scales. The main concerns though, are that even with hermetic packaging, the raw materials for these cells still pose inherent safety and reliability risks. For wearable devices, which are a major application for flexible printed devices, a more versatile technology has been sought. A new study in Applied Physics Letters describes recent experiments with a different battery chemistry—Zn-MnO2. Using special fabrication techniques, a 10-cell series configuration of the battery was able to generate peak voltages of 14 volts, and a capacity of up to 0.8 mA h. © 2013 Phys.org The main incentive to developing printed thin-film batteries is that they would be able to be fabricated on the same production line as the rest of a printed electronic device. Much research has gone into reducing the relatively high potential (10-30V) of solution-phase printed organic TFTs. The fact remains that a lot of the traditional problems of these devices like low mobility, large channel lengths, drain-source shorting, and thick dielectric layers, go away when higher voltages are used. The ability to now make high-potential batteries based on alkaline chemistry, like the Zn-MnO2, removes many of the traditional concerns with lithium batteries.Alkaline batteries are generally less expensive than lithium batteries, and their environmentally friendly raw materials do not need to be hermetically sealed. The cells are printed on commercially available polyvivyl alcohol/cellulose(PAC) membranes. The 100um thick membrane also serves as a separator and a substrate for the Zn and MnO2 electrodes. A hydrophobic fluoropolymer solution (Teflon AF) is printed between the electrodes to reduce electrolyte migration and conduction between neighboring electrodes of different cells. The anode and cathode are printed from solution-based inks composed of conductive additives and binder materials. The cells were connected with a printed silver-based ink.The anode and cathode footprint of the battery, as well as their separation distance, is 1 cm2. The open circuit potential of 14 V is limited mainly by self-discharge of the MnO2 electrode during processing, particularly as a result of the multiple baking steps needed to evaporate solvents. The battery was tested by discharging through a 100 kΩ resistive load. After 7.5 hours, the potential dropped to 10V, which was what was used for the conservatively-set 0.8 mA h capacity. To further characterize their battery, a technique known as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was used to determine the ohmic resistance (1.20 Ω), and the charge transfer resistance (0.8 Ω). These values are low enough for the individual cells that they do not cause major impedance losses when assembled into a 10-cell device. The researchers also gave the battery a real-word test to demonstrate its performance within an actual printed circuit. They used a ring oscillator circuit made from five simple inverting gates connected head-to-tail. The frequency of an output tap on this circuit depends on supply voltage and delay through the circuit. The ring oscillator test circuit only drew a very low current and the resulting waveform peaked at 13 V on each 10 ms cycle. After 20 minutes of use, no changes in the open circuit potential were detectable, suggesting that simple circuits could be powered for an extended duration. More complex circuits may likely draw much more power than a ring oscillator, but the new Zn-MnO2 battery looks like it will be a good alternative to lithium for many foreseable printed device applications. Lett. 102, 233302 (2013); dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4810974 AbstractMechanically flexible arrays of alkaline electrochemical cells fabricated using stencil printing onto fibrous substrates are shown to provide the necessary performance characteristics for driving ink-jet printed circuits. Due to the dimensions and material set currently required for reliable low-temperature print processing of electronic devices, a battery potential greater than that sourced by single cells is typically needed. The developed battery is a series interconnected array of 10 low resistance Zn-MnO2 alkaline cells, giving an open circuit potential of 14 V. This flexible battery is used to power an ink-jet printed 5-stage complementary ring oscillator based on organic semiconductors. Other examples including Darrel J. McLeod of Sooke, B.C., in the non-fiction category for “Mamaskatch: A Cree Coming of Age” (Douglas & McIntyre), Edmonton’s Billy-Ray Belcourt on the poetry list for “This Wound is a World” (Frontenac House), and non-fiction finalist Terese Marie Mailhot of Seabird Island, B.C., for “Heart Berries: A Memoir” (Doubleday Canada).“Indigenous lit has always been produced but now it’s receiving perhaps more mainstream recognition, rightfully so,” said Whitehead, 29.“I think of (musician) Jeremy Dutcher after he won his Polaris Prize (last month) saying we’re entering a new wave of ‘Indigenous renaissance’ and I really think we are…. I never thought we would see something like this, especially on such large-scale award recognition like the GGs.”Jonny Appleseed is a character Whitehead has had in his head since his late teens, when he was an avid reader of stream-of-consciousness, beatnik-type literature from the likes of Jack Kerouac and Kurt Vonnegut. He wrote Jonny into a short story and a novella before making him the focus of his debut novel. His aim was to write specifically for two-spirit or queer-Indigenous youth and showcase their lives “in powerful and sexy and meaningful and healthy ways,” said Whitehead, whose poetry book “Full-Metal Indigiqueer” was shortlisted for the 2017 Lambda Literary Award for Transgender Poetry.“I’m a firm believer that you need to see yourself in order to know yourself and right now there are so many harmful representations of Indigeneity, specifically queer-Indigeneity, made by non-Indigenous people, or sometimes even Indigenous people,” said Whitehead.“I wanted to craft healthy mirrors for folks.”Whitehead called the book a “bio-story” that braids his life with that of Jonny’s.“Yes, it’s fiction, but I don’t have that ability to disassociate,” he said. “I like to think of writing as method-acting, almost, where it’s like I’m imagining myself in a film or I’m placing myself into situations. Sometimes my personal experiences are embedded and they kind of flower from there.”While all the plaudits for “Jonny Appleseed” have left Whitehead in a “bewildered daze,” he’s mostly excited that he’s getting more opportunities to spark conversations about what two-spirit means or what queer-Indigeneity looks like or feels like.At recent Giller events in Winnipeg and Regina, “everyone would come up to me with open arms, sometimes with tears, sometimes with laughter, and thank me so vigorously for writing a character that they had never seen, that they had never heard before, and for teaching them and transforming them, too,” Whitehead said.“Every time I go somewhere I feel like I’m always in a state of mourning, because I’m so overcome with emotion. I never thought Jonny would have an impact this wide. I’m trying to think back to the child-me, the impoverished, urban rez kid who was living in the hood or the ghettos of Selkirk, Man., or the housing projects. I never thought writing would expand or put me on a platform as large as it has.“I never could have dreamed of this.”

Bombayites eagerly looked forward to seeing R K Laxmans cartoons on the front page of The Times of India His cartoons ranged from the common man to the Prime Ministerministers and public personalities Indira with a long crooked noseShastri as a diminutive sparrow and an army general after the bashing we got from the Chinese in 1962 was depicted as a battered boxer in the boxing ring No one took offencethere was no public outrage Rational people understand that cartoons enliven the dull monotony of our every day lives and make the reader smilefrownor simply laugh It is good to look at ourselves and our institutions in their comic aspects and not to take ourselves too seriously Prof Mushirul Hasans fascinating bookWit and Wisdom: Pickings from the Parsee Punchmentions that Parsee Punch was published in July 1854 and was the only illustrated comic weekly paper in the Bombay Presidency It contained 12 pages of cartoons which poked fun at the British ruling class and political leaders of the times both in India and in the UK The cartoons were taken in the right spirit No cartoonist or editor or journalist was jailed The US Library of Congress has one of the worlds largest collections of cartoons There is a famous book containing cartoons of lawyers who are not always portrayed in a flattering manner but mercifully no lawyer so far has gone on strike I have critically seen the cartoon made in 1969 Significantly neither Nehru nor Amedkar objected There is nothing objectionable at all if you see the cartoon along with the text which indeed is appreciative of the arduous task entrusted to Dr Ambedkar of framing Free Indias constitution At the worstit conveys that Nehru was impatient with the slow process of constitution making and urged Ambedkar to speed up the process The most disappointing aspect of the cartoon episode is that Minister Kapil Sibala cultured broad-minded persontendered an apology which was not required and thereby indirectly put an imprimatur on the intolerant demands of certain groups for deletion of cartoons What has come over us Have we completely lost the faculty of humour And remember that a person without humour is one without a sense of proportion What is most worrying is the underlying intolerant mindset Anything critical or unpalatable has to be banned The entire episode about deletion of the cartoon and setting up a so-called expert committee to decide about further deletions of cartoons is a crude onslaught on the freedom of expression by yielding to the sentiments of hypersensitive people who perceive hurt
