Spring in Cairns step will recover tourism TTNQ CEO

first_imgSource = e-Travel Blackboard: G.A Heads of Tourism Tropical North Queensland (TTNQ) and the Cairns Mayor announced yesterday that Cairns is actively rethinking, repositing and redeveloping efforts to strengthen its already recovering tourism. On a Sydney day that ended in wet woollen coats, TTNQ Chairman William Calderwood rubbed in Cairns’ 28 degree weather as he outlined the region’s growth and development.“Cairns punches above its weight,” Mr Calderwood said.“It has infrastructure and services far above what you’d expect for its size and population.”Cairns, once the second most popular tourist destination in Australia, saw tourism numbers drop over the last eighteen months due largely to the global financial crisis and a downturn in aviation capacity.“We’re moving beyond that – we have a new spring in our step,” TTNQ chief executive Rob Gaison said.Efforts to recapture lost tourism numbers have seen Cairns open its tourism scope beyond the leisure market while improving infrastructure and marketing, Mr Gaison told e-Travel Blackboard. The completion of Cairn’s domestic terminal in late August will bring a 20 per cent boost in aviation capacity, adding 345 000 seats.“We’re dependent on air travel…87 per cent of interstate visitors [to Cairns] travel by air,” Mr Gaison said.Plans to expand beyond leisure tourism into medical, educational and sports tourism have seen TTNQ work closely with Cairns Council as infrastructure to feed into these markets is developed.Cairns Mayor Val Schier also announced plans to: establish a cultural precinct; improve the cruise terminal; and build Australia’s first museum devoted to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander living culture.TTNQ have also worked actively on developing a destination rich website featuring feeds from live web cams.“We have found that 80 per cent of consumers research destinations and we needed to be in that space…We want to make people choose us,” Mr Gaison said.Cairns recorded a six per cent growth in the year ending March 2010, the best performing region in Australia.
