Denmark’s LD pension fund reported an investment return of 8.7% for 2014, and said strong returns on Danish shares and US investments in general had pushed profits higher. The return compares with 8.8% for the previous year.LD director Dorrit Vanglo said: “This is a really good result that we are very pleased with — seen both in the light of modest growth in the economy and the very low level of inflation.”While rising prices on the Danish equities market helped drive overall investment returns higher, the fall in interest rates over the year had increased profits on both general bonds and corporate bonds, LD said. “We have had positive returns in all funds, and when we look outside the country’s borders, it was particularly investments in the US that gave good results,” said Vanglo. She predicted that it would be the US that pulled the world economy forward in 2015 as well.At the same time, the stronger dollar meant goods produced in Europe would be relatively cheaper, thus making European business more competitive, she said.Assets under management rose by DKK1.2bn (€161m) in 2014 to end the year at DKK54.6bn, after payments made to members of DKK2.5bn.LD is a non-contributory pension scheme based on cost-of-living allowances granted to workers in 1980, and as such it receives no new contribution inflows.Vanglo said LD’s costs were being kept to an absolute minimum.“There are just 15 staff at LD and we have tight control over our suppliers, under which costs fall when overall assets and the number of members fall,” she said. For more on LD’s investment startegy, see investment editor Martin Steward’s interview with Dorrit Vanglo

Golden Veroleum Liberia (GVL) is set to increase its workforce to more than 4,000 Liberians by 2016, Mr. Stephen Binda, head of GVL’s local communications, told journalists yesterday at a local restaurant in Monrovia.“Presently we have employed 3,501 Liberians and that figure will increase to over 4,000 by 2016,” Binda said, and explained that GVL is set to complete a mill that will produce palm oil products in Tarjuowon, Sinoe County.Liberians who resided in the company’s areas of operation can rest assured that their interests are paramount to GVL, Binda said adding that the company wants to accelerate the economic progress of Liberians who are employed with GVL. He told several editors at the meeting that GVL has invested over US$1.5billion in its operations and therefore accurate information could lead to more investments in Liberia.Binda pointed out that since GVL began operations in Sinoe County, several developments, including the opening of a Total Gas Station and two local banks, have taken place in the county.“This has come about because GVL has created trust in the people and the over three thousand employees now have encouraged other essential businesses to operate in Sinoe,” he said. He appealed to the local media to work along with GVL to provide balanced information to the Liberian government, its employees, Liberians and its corporate partners. Binda said the success of GVL is basically linked with that of Liberia, “because when many thousands of Liberians are employed, they can have a better future for themselves and their families and Liberia will be better off.” He said GVL is committed to ensure the rights of all Liberian citizens in its areas of operation and will respect local, national, and ratified international laws and assured Liberians that the company will provide equal opportunities for all Liberian employees and workers, and embrace diversity regardless of ethnicity, religion, disability, gender, political affiliation, sexual orientation or union membership. Binda concluded that GVL will recognize communities who engage the company to develop their land and they will receive priority of initial opportunities in line with GVL’s internal Human Resource Policy. The meeting was attended by Mr. Virgil Magee, GVL’s head of Communications. Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)

A new Chipko in Odisha In what is seen as a victory for the villagers of Balarampur in Dhenkanal distict of central Odisha, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday directed the cancellation of a brewery project.Balarampur villagers, especially women, had been vehemently protesting against the cutting down of trees in Jhinkargadi forest that was nurtured by them over four decades.Mr. Patnaik had himself performed groundbreaking ceremony of the ₹102 crore brewery project on November 3, which was to be established by P&A Bottlers Private Limited. The brewery project was requiring 12 acres of forestland of Jhinkargadi. In a throwback to the Chipko movement to save trees in the seventies, Balarampur women had successfully thwarted tree-felling bid by Dhenkanal district administration by embracing trees on November 7.Also Read After 10 days, the administration had descended on the spot with hordes of police personnel on wee hours of November 17. Although villagers put up a resistance to save their trees, they were chased away by armed police personnel. More than 500 trees were razed to ground. The images of women clasping trees had then gone viral attracting widepread condemnation on police high-handedness. Activists and citizens had rushed to Balarampur to give moral supports to villagers.Coming under pressure of massive public outcry, Mr. Patnaik on Sunday ordered immediate halt to tree felling and a probe by Revenue Divisional Commissioner (RDC). The RDC, D.V. Swamy submitted his report to the government on Monday. “Based on the factual report available, the allocation of bottling plant may be cancelled and alternative site may be provided. Unnecessary felling of trees may be stopped forthwith, and immediate plantation should be taken up,” Mr. Swamy recommended to the government.Without wasting any time, Chief Minister ordered cancellation of the bottling plant in that location.“Although our resistance was small one, it never lacked the determination. We welcome CM’s decision to cancel the project. Now, we want government to declare the Jhinkargadi forest being protected by people to be a prohibited zone for all non-forest uses,” said Sushanta Kumar Dhala, Secretary, Balarampur Gramya Parichalana Parishad (BGPP).Balarampur villagers, who had congregated in Jhinkargadi forest to intensify their agitation against brewery project on Monday, celebrated it as their victory.

Lee Clark: Newcastle need Almiron goal; Noble tribute; Souness right on Man Utdby Lee Clarka month agoSend to a friendShare the loveWithout being disrespectful to Brighton, because every team you come up against in the Premier League are tough opponents, but if Newcastle are playing teams in the same situation as themselves at St. James’ Park, you expect them to be on the front foot, be positive and taking the game on.I think Steve Bruce would have wanted his team to play that way. He certainly wouldn’t have wanted the 71 per cent possession to 29 per cent possession ratio in favour of the away team. In the first-half Brighton were totally dominant and in saying that if you look over the course of the game Newcastle probably had as many clear cut chances as Brighton. The chance that Miguel Almiron had is one that a striker with confidence puts down the side of the goalkeeper into the corner of the goal. Instead he just fired it straight down the goalkeeper’s throat. That’s a player who is trying desperately hard to break this goalscoring duck. He’s got such a brilliant work ethic for the team, the reports you get from the training ground is that he works ever so hard on the pitch and I think everybody that is associated with the club are willing Almiron on to get this goal because I think if he gets the first one, his confidence levels will rise and he’ll go on a bit of a run.I know Brighton had their own chances and they were the dominant team. So I think all in all it was a disappointing performance and a disappointing weekend because I think Steve Bruce and his staff were probably expecting three points. The positive thing out of it is that they haven’t lost the game, they’ve kept the clean sheet that will help the defenders and the goalkeeper and then obviously they’ve got a point from a performance that probably didn’t warrant it. The problem they’ve got now is they’ve got extremely tough league games in the next three. They’ve got to start to picking up points because it’s getting really tight at the bottom there in terms of there being five or six teams where one or two wins can get you out of the relegation zone and on the other hand two or three losses puts you right in there and gives you confidence issues.DELIGHTED FOR ANDY, BUT…I was absolutely delighted to see Andy Carroll back in Newcastle colours, but the problem we’ve got is everyone is hanging their hopes on him because of the season we’ve had. It’s a big call because of his injury problems, he’s not going to be straight into the firing line in terms of starting games. It’s going to have to be a gradual process with Andy working up his match fitness. He got 10-15 minutes against Brighton and I think Steve will be trying to use him from the bench and maybe giving him a little bit longer with each appearance, then seeing how long it will take before he believes he is ready to start. But Andy has obviously lifted the mood around the club and around the city. All I’d warn is that there’s a lot of pressure on him because everyone is hanging their hopes on him to be the one that turns things around for the club.HUDDERSFIELDI’ve seen the two games since Danny Cowley took over and I totally agree with his sentiments from what he said after those games: it’s a club that has forgot how to win. It’s been that long. It’s a group of players, I think he used the words, that play the scoreboard rather than the game, so even when they go ahead they are worrying about getting pegged back, and if they get overtaken it seems to effect their mentality and confidence. I thought for an hour they did great against West Bromwich Albion, it’s always a tough place to go the Hawthorns. But then as soon as West Brom got back to 2-2 there looked like there’d be only one winner and that ended up being the case.Danny has come out and said he feels the team isn’t fit enough to play the way he wants to play for 94, 95 minutes. It’s a really tough period for the club. The manager is trying to get his ideas across, it’s not going to happen overnight, especially if he wants to change so many things. Reports stated that ten days leading up to the game Danny gave the players so much information, so you could worry about it being overload for them. You just hope that they can get this first win sooner rather than later because the longer it goes on the longer it will just frighten the life out of everyone in terms of fans, players, staff, because everyone starts losing their confidence and wondering where the next result is coming from.SOUNESS WAS RIGHT ABOUT MAN UTDI think there is a good chance that it could be the worst ever Manchester United squad in the Premier League era without a doubt. I was really disappointed with their performance against West Ham United. The three guys in the Sky Sports studio – Graeme Souness, Roy Keane and Jose Mourinho – know a hell of a lot about winning major trophies and what it takes, and they were quite scathing and rightly so on the performance level that Man Utd delivered against West Ham. I thought it was quite inept, quite flat to be honest. All you expect from a Man Utd team, even in the games that they’ve lost, you expect them to be up and at you, creating numerous chances, playing with lots of a tempo, lots of speed, hitting you on the break, you’re always worried even when you’re in front that they can come back and hurt you because of their pace. They just look like a run of the mill Premier League team at the moment. People are talking about them breaking into the top-four, I would say that you’ve got to worry about them getting into the top-six at this moment in time, never mind the top-four, because I think their performance levels are quite average at best. NOBLE RIGHT WHERE HE WANTS TO BEThe answer to Mark Noble joining a bigger club is tough when you’re playing for the club that you love and support and you’re playing every week and you’re classed as one of the main men. He’s been a terrific ambassador for West Ham. You can see he loves the club. When they’ve had the times of turmoil and disappointment, he’s always been the one that steps up and comes to the fore, whether that has to be communicating with the fans or on the pitch. He’s the leader for those West Ham supporters and their fans – and the group of players who are in the dressing room would understand what the club means to play for West Ham because of Mark Noble. Am I surprised he hasn’t been in the England set-up? Yeah I probably am. But in terms of playing for a big club, I don’t think he’d be too bothered or interested in that. He’s living his dream so I don’t think moving anywhere else would’ve been of any interest to him. TagsTransfersOpinionAbout the authorLee ClarkShare the loveHave your say
Twitter/@BennettESPNGive some credit to Cincinnati—the Bearcats couldn’t quite close, and Kentucky dominated today’s game down the stretch, but they never gave the impression that they were intimidated by the Wildcats. One UC band member was similarly confident, and had a very simple ’35-1′ sign at the KFC Yum! Center, which got some traction on social media before the game. Mohali: With Kagiso Rabada’s yorker being the talk of the town, it will be interesting to see how the Delhi Capitals pacer counters the hard-hitting Kings XI Punjab batsmen when the two teams clash in an IPL match here on Monday. Rabada helped the Capitals defend the lowest total (10) in a Super Over in IPL history after the scores were tied at 185 in the allotted 20 overs each. Focus will now be on how the South African paceman would fare against the likes of Chris Gayle, Lokesh Rahul, Mayank Agarwal and David Miller. Both sides are riding high on confidence having won their respective matches on Saturday. In fact, both the teams’ opening batsmen were the architect of their victory. Also Read – Puducherry on top after 8-wkt win over ChandigarhWhile Delhi’s Prithvi Shaw (55-ball 99) almost took the team home against Kolkata Knight Riders, Rahul (57-ball 71) finished the job for Punjab against Mumbai Indians. Playing on home turf, Rahul, who had failed in his first two matches, played a controlled innings while Gayle (40) and Mayank Agarwal (43) also chipped in with crucial runs to help Punjab comfortably chase down the 177-run target, set by Mumbai. Gayle was his usual self and batted in the manner only he can as 36 of his 40-run knock came in boundaries and sixes. Also Read – Vijender’s next fight on Nov 22, opponent to be announced laterRahul has the ability to steady the innings and play sheet anchor’s role and Gayle can puncture opposition camp’s plans to control the run flow, something that Delhi would be worried about. Punjab’s bowling is spearheaded by Mohammed Shami and with other key players such as Andrew Tye and Hardus Viljoen in their ranks, it may not be easy for the visiting batsmen. Moreover, Ravichandran Ashwin-led KXIP would also have the advantage of playing at home and they will look to exploit familiar conditions once again. Delhi though will be desperate to get the momentum going after winning a close game. Chasing 186 to win against KKR, Delhi were set up nicely by Shaw but they failed score six runs from the last over, taking the match to Super Over. However, Rabada’s sensational yorkers in all six balls restricted KKR to just seven runs while chasing 11. Delhi will be hoping not to let that advantage slip. Besides Shaw, Delhi also have the likes of Rishabh Pant, who played a superb knock of 78 to pile up a mammoth 213 against Mumbai Indians in the first match, Shikhar Dhawan, captain Shreyas Iyer and Colin Ingram. They would expect their batsmen come out all guns blazing against Punjab on Sunday.
Kolkata: The Election Commission has served a show-cause notice each to the BJP district president of Nadia Mahadev Sarkar and Trinamool Congress MLA from Chakdah Ratna Ghosh Kar, for their derogatory remarks. Sarkar had made some derogatory remarks on Mahua Moitra, who is contesting the ongoing Lok Sabha elections on a Trinamool Congress ticket. The Commission has taken a strong objection to his remarks after watching the video where he was heard saying the words. Sarkar has been asked to clarify why he made such remarks about a candidate of his rival party. Patrick Mahomes and company have routinely jumped out to big leads, outscoring opponents by a league-leading 46 points in the first quarter. That has made opposing offenses play with urgency and desperation — two qualities that will generate yardage quickly in the NFL.3This was not a valid excuse Sunday night, when the Patriots racked up 500 yards and 43 points while leading the majority of the game. The good news for Andy Reid and the Chiefs is that every team that appears on the list above eventually got better. On average, they allowed 81.72 percent of their yardage per game for the remainder of the season. If the Chiefs enjoy a similar regression, they would allow 382.6 yards per game, which through Sunday of Week 6 would rank 23nd. That’s like being The Steel Curtain compared with where they are.Kansas City doesn’t have to look far for an example of how to rebound on defense. The Patriots last year had allowed 2,644 yards (440.7 per game) at the same stage of the season — good for fifth worst since 1940 at the time. They improved that to 321.2 for the rest of the year and coasted to the Super Bowl. (Granted, that’s when they reverted to their prior form and lost 41-33 to the Eagles despite posting 613 yards of offense and never punting. The Pats’ defense gave up 5384Our favorite number. total yards.)Or maybe Kansas City doesn’t even need to improve on defense. Mahomes is a big play waiting to happen, and the Chiefs have firepower everywhere on the field — from the backfield with Kareem Hunt, to middle of the field where Travis Kelce roams, to far downfield where Tyreek Hill hauls in Mahomes’s rockets. Plus defense seems optional this year, with the league on a record pace since 1950 in points, yards, yards per play and yards per pass play — and even yards per rush has never been higher. In other words, in 2018, NFL teams generally can’t stop anyone or anything.Check out our latest NFL predictions. The most explosive one? Whomever they happen to be playing.Through six games, the Chiefs are the worst defense ever measured in yards allowed.1Since 1940. They’ve yielded 2,809 yards, or 468.2 per game, and are on pace for 7,491 yards allowed over the full season. That would smash the record set by the 2012 Saints, the only team in history to give up more than 7,000 yards. No team that’s allowed even 6,600 yards in a season has ever finished with a winning record. For all their offensive firepower, the Chiefs have somehow gained nearly 300 fewer yards than opponents (2,511). They are more efficient in yards per play — but not by much. Their opponents’ 6.56 average gain is the seventh most through six games since the 1970 merger. But defenses in 2018 are struggling leaguewide: Two clubs this year are actually worse in yards allowed per play than the Chiefs — the Buccaneers (who have played just five games) and the Raiders.Yes, the Kansas City offense is so good that the Chiefs are still 5-1. They’ve already won two games this year when they gave up more than 500 yards, while every other team in the 500 Club since 2000 is 63-186-3. They have allowed at least five entire football fields worth of offense three times — putting them easily on pace to break the single-season record of five by the 1950 Colts.2The Colts hit that mark in only 12 regular-season games. Only seven other teams ever gave up four 500-plus-yard games in a single season. Could any team that’s so seemingly helpless on defense overcome such profound weakness on that side of the ball? Or could their defense somehow improve? 49ers20052,7166,259452.73184.108.40.206
Ohio State sophomore forward Jared Sullinger was named one of 15 finalists for the John R. Wooden Award Tuesday. The award, named after former UCLA basketball coach John Wooden, recognizes the top player in college basketball. Sullinger is the only player on the list who was a 2011 Wooden Award All American. He was also named first-team All-American by Sporting News for the second straight year. The Buckeye big man has averaged 17 points and 9 rebounds for the No. 7-ranked OSU basketball team this year as the team compiled a 25-6 regular season record. Sullinger’s 14 points and 10 rebounds helped OSU beat Michigan State, 72-70, Sunday and give the Buckeyes a share of the Big Ten regular season championship along with the Spartans and Michigan. MSU senior forward and Big Ten Player of the Year Draymond Green was the only other player from the Big Ten named a finalist for the Wooden Award. Other notable names include Kentucky freshmen forwards Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Kansas junior forward Thomas Robinson, and North Carolina senior forward Tyler Zeller. The list, which also requires the student-athletes to maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, was comprised of three freshmen, two sophomores, three juniors and seven seniors. The Big East had three players on the list, which was the most of any conference. The Wooden All-American teams will be announced during the week of the “Elite Eight” round of the NCAA Tournament. In the meantime, Sullinger and the Buckeyes will travel to Indianapolis for the Big Ten tournament. They will play Friday at approximately 9 p.m. against the winner of a game between Nebraska and Purdue. After the tournament ends Sunday, the team will learn its seeding in the NCAA Tournament.

In those four losses — to Michigan State, Iowa, Minnesota and Monday at Nebraska — the Buckeyes (15-4, 2-4) have struggled shooting the ball, making just 40.4 percent of their shots from the field. Points in the paint have been an issue as well, particularly in the last three games, as OSU has given up 120 points down low.Junior centers Amir Williams and Trey McDonald have struggled, causing OSU coach Thad Matta to play with a smaller lineup down the stretch late in games to give his team a chance. Williams has started all 19 games this season for OSU — along with senior guards Aaron Craft and Lenzelle Smith Jr., junior guard Shannon Scott and junior forward LaQuinton Ross — but his recent play begs a question: Should there be a change to the starting five?“I haven’t even thought in terms of that, from what we did (Tuesday) to what we’re getting to go out and do here in practice. We’re going to compete and get after it and I want to see who’s standing at the end of the day, but I’ve had a lot of thoughts go through my mind. But the starting lineup — I haven’t even thought about that one,” Matta said after a brief pause. “We’ve started games well. Last couple, we’ve got off to decent starts. I’ve been pretty pleased with those, but we gotta get the middle and the end corrected.”No matter who starts or finishes the games, though, the end result has not been what OSU wants, as turnovers, missed shots and poor defensive executions have led to almost three weeks without a victory.“I don’t know if I’d call it a lack of confidence. I’d definitely say there is a different feel around than we had (19) days ago, but I wouldn’t call it a confidence issue,” Thompson said. “I would say there is a certain frustration level with the basketball team, just with losing. We’re not frustrated with each other, we’re not frustrated with the coaching staff, we’re just frustrated with ourselves that we aren’t coming out and doing the things we know we’re capable of doing.”Scott agreed with Thompson, and said the team is going to be “fine” once it gets back to what it needs to do.“We know what we have to do now, we know what we’re capable of doing as a team but until we take action and fix what we’ve been doing lately, we’re not going to be a successful basketball team,” Scott said. “Once we all get our heads straight and stick together, we’re going to be fine.”The team standing in the way of OSU putting a halt to its four-game skid is Illinois (13-6, 2-4), also a team that has lost four in a row. With both squads reeling, the intensity is likely to be high Thursday.“We both need wins. Illinois, right now, is in the same position as us, having lost four straight,” Thompson said. “I can’t exactly speak on how they feel, but we assume they feel the same way that we feel in that this is a one-game season.”“(It’s) another Big Ten game. Because I think you would look and say everyone in this league is, in one way or another, desperate,” Matta said. “You can’t take anything for granted. You gotta go out and play.”As OSU looks to get back on track, Thompson said it is using the four straight losses as motivation.“We’re not feeling sorry for ourselves. We’re not going to get down on ourselves. We’re a tougher basketball team than that,” Thompson said. “We’re a veteran-led basketball team and we’re going to do everything we can to make sure that we come out and play to the best of our abilities on Thursday.”Tipoff at the Schottenstein Center is set for 7 p.m.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is certain that his squad can repeat their feats for next seasonThe Catalan secured his first Premier League title on Sunday after Manchester United’s shock 1-0 defeat to West Brom confirmed City as the new champions. It marked what has truly been a dominant season at the Etihad Stadium with City having only lost two games all season and they are currently on the verge of breaking Chelsea’s points record of 95 points over the course of a single season, as well as their own record for most goals scored in a single season at 103.But Guardiola, whose side contain many young regular starters, is adamant that City have the potential to learn from their experiences from the past year and build on it for more glory in the future.“Sergio [Aguero] is a genius, a top player but about 30 years old but the others are 21, 22 so we won with guys that are so young,” said Guardiola, according to Manchester Evening News.“Playing in the Champions League at that age is sometimes complicated and maybe it’s a good lesson for them for the future and for next season.”While repeating the same feats that City have achieved this season will be difficult, Guardiola has refused to rule out the prospect.Report: City are stunned by Norwich George Patchias – September 14, 2019 Manchester City was stunned by Norwich City in todays Premier League clash.Much has been made in recent days of the potential impact of Aymeric…“We will have to try,” answered the 47 year-old when asked.“If you read what people said this week we have a lot to improve. You cannot deny that you are judged on results, okay that’s what it is, but you cannot deny we were good this season, we were good every single day.“To make 18 wins in a row you have to be mentally strong and they again [against Tottenham] showed me how strong they are and this is important to help build up this club a little bit higher.“Manchester City is not like United or Chelsea – the big clubs in England have trophies and a lot of history behind them.“Sometimes you have to do these sort of things to believe ‘wow, we are good too, like the others’.“The way we played helped us reach our target.“Of course next season it’s not going to happen the same, it’s impossible. It’s the target to say we were able to to that and if we are able to do it once then we are able to do it twice so we have to try to be constant next season.
Laurent Blanc has been without a job since he left PSG almost two years ago – and he admitted that he feels like it’s a time to come back and it could be in England as he wants to coach there. The Frenchman claimed that Bundesliga would be interesting as well but he doesn’t speak German so it wouldn’t be a great idea for him – however, there is no problem with England and he has always wanted to coach in the Premier League. The former France national team coach spoke about his future as he said, according to Football London:Jose Mourinho is sold on Lampard succeeding at Chelsea Tomás Pavel Ibarra Meda – September 14, 2019 Jose Mourinho wanted to give his two cents on Frank Lampard’s odds as the new Chelsea FC manager, he thinks he will succeed. There really…“The Bundesliga is a great league but I don’t speak the language. It’s difficult to manage players when you can’t communicate.”“I know I’m fussy, only a big club would interest me. If not, I’ll face facts and think of something else.”“Every coach is attracted by the Premier League. It is the best league and with the financial power that will still be the case for years to come.”
Paris Saint-Germain boss Thomas Tuchel has revealed that they are close to completing deadline-day deals for Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Juan BernatBernat only made 12 appearances at Bayern Munich last season and will likely provide cover for fellow new left-back Yuri Berchiche, who joined from Athletic Bilbao earlier this summer.Although the signing that has intrigued people the most is Cameroon attacker Choupo-Moting, who could only manage five goals in 30 Premier League games for the relegated Stoke City.“It’s August 31, it’s very late, I’m not going to lie,” said Tuchel, according to FourFourTwo.“We’re trying to get the two players signed, they’re doing their medical tests now. I do not know if others will follow.“We’ve been looking for a few weeks for cover for [Edinson] Cavani, the opportunity has come with Maxim, who is a top-level player, who can impact right away when he comes off the bench.“With the arrival of Choupo-Moting, it’s a lot of attackers. It can impact [Timothy] Weah’s situation, but at the same time not, because it’s another type of player.”Goalkeeper Kevin Trapp has been linked with a permanent move to Eintracht Frankfurt, while Giovani Lo Celso is expected to complete a transfer to La Liga side Real Betis.“Trapp wants to leave, he’s trying to sign with another club,” Tuchel confirmed.“Lo Celso, I do not know exactly what he’s up to.”Midfielder Marco Verratti is a doubt for Saturday’s trip to promoted Nimes as PSG look to maintain their winning start to the new season.PSG ultras sent a warning letter to Neymar Manuel R. Medina – September 14, 2019 Brazilian superstar Neymar might play today his first game of the season for Paris Saint-Germain and the team’s ultras have warned him.“Verratti has resumed training,” Tuchel added.“We will decide together after the session of the day if he is with us in Nimes.”The Ligue 1 champions have been pitted against Red Star Belgrade, Napoli and Liverpool in Group C of this season’s Champions League.Although Tuchel is looking forward to going head-to-head with new Napoli boss Carlo Ancelotti.“Ancelotti is a great coach,” he said.“He was a great inspiration to me.”? Share Houston Police Department Facebook PageA Houston Police Department’s DWI Task Force patrol cars.More than half of the officers with the Houston Police Department are using body cameras that monitor their activities while working. A new study finds that the cameras are reducing complaints against police officers and the use of excessive force.Houston police started testing body cameras in 2013. In response to public outrage, former President Obama developed a task force to improve public trust in officers and the federal government gave local police departments 40-million to spend on cameras. While a recent study of Washington D.C. officers found the cameras had no effect on Capitol police’s use of force, a Federally funded research analysis of Las Vegas police shows police violence dropped by 37%.Dr. Chip Coldren led the study and says he was surprised by how cameras can change behavior. “Cameras have this civilizing effect that moderates the behavior civilians as well as police officers,” he says.Dr. Coldren says 70% of civilian complaints were immediately dismissed after those that filed, viewed what the camera recorded. But, he says 8-10% of complaints still have merit. He credits bad management for most problems.“Those incidents increase when management get lack. When training is not attended to, when training plans are not refreshed, when investigations start to get sloppy and people are not held accountable for the quality of the training and the investigation. Which actually can happen quite frequently in police organizations.”And for critics who think the use of cameras will make a police officer apprehensive to engage with the public over fear of a complaint, Coldren says that’s not what the study shows.“Officers wearing cameras were slightly more likely, by about five to seven percent, to make an arrest or issue a citation based on a call for service. So they were actually more productive than officers not wearing cameras,” says Dr. Coldren.
By Stephen Janis, Special to the AFROAs funeral services for slain Baltimore Homicide detective Sean Suiter were held this week, the mystery has only deepened about how the veteran cop was killed in a vacant West Baltimore lot roughly two weeks ago. There have been few leads and even fewer clues as to how and why Det. Suiter, an 18 year veteran of the Baltimore Police Department (BPD), was fatally shot in the head with his own gun after what police have described as a brief struggle.Slain Baltimore Homicide detective Sean Suiter. (Courtesy Photo)But, one fact which has emerged from the case is only stoking community suspicions and raising more questions about the department tasked with solving the case: the widening of an investigation into eight officers charged with stealing from residents, racketeering and drug dealing. At an impromptu press conference on Nov. 22, BPD Commissioner Kevin Davis revealed that Suiter was set to testify before a federal grand jury as part of an ongoing investigation into the now-notorious Gun Trace Task Force. The charges brought against that group have continued to reverberate throughout a department already under a federal consent decree and battling a record wave of crime and homicide.“I am now aware of Det. Suiter’s pending federal grand jury testimony surrounding an incident that occurred seven years ago with BPD police officers who were federally indicted,” the commissioner said. “The acting U.S. attorney and the special agent in charge of the Baltimore field office have told me in no uncertain terms [that] Detective Suiter was not the target of any ongoing criminal investigation.”The bombshell announcement came about a week after Suiter was killed. But, tangible leads in the slaying have been scarce, according to investigators familiar with the case. That fact has not stopped Davis from publicly expressing his theories on what happened—among them, that Suiter’s impending testimony and his murder are not linked.“It appears to be nothing more than a spontaneous observation of man acting suspiciously, and a spontaneous decision to investigate his conduct,” Davis said.Still, the fact that Davis’ comments came during the widening ongoing federal investigation of the department, and during a high-profile murder investigation, have raised questions both inside and outside the department.“Everyone was surprised that he’s been talking so freely about the case,” a source familiar with the investigation, who did not want to be named, told the AFRO.Suiter was not the only officer who worked with the Task Force to receive a summons to appear before a federal grand jury. According to sources within BPD, at least one other officer who had worked with the Gun Trace Task Force received a letter last week compelling them to testify, indicating federal prosecutors are far from done with the scandal. It’s unclear which aspect of the case investigators are currently exploring. However, Baltimore NBC affiliate WBAL-TV and The Baltimore Sun reported that federal prosecutors have reopened an accident case that involved Suiter and Sgt. Wayne Jenkins, one of the eight Task Force officers already indicted. In 2010, the pair engaged in a car chase with a suspect who ultimately crashed into another vehicle, killing the 86-year old father of a Baltimore police officer. The suspect was charged with possession of heroin, but has asked a federal judge to reopen his case.Meanwhile, questions still surround the few details police have disclosed about what happened in that vacant lot in the city’s Harlem Park neighborhood, a crime scene that remains cordoned off. An aspect of the case that troubled one former homicide investigator is how a suspect could take Suiter’s weapon and shoot him while his partner was nearby.“We would cover someone,” said former Baltimore Homicide Lt. Stephen Tabeling. “I would have been right behind him.”However, Davis has said that the detective who accompanied Suiter that day, who has yet to be identified, was allegedly not in the immediate vicinity when the shooting occurred.“Upon the sound of gunfire, Suiter’s partner sought cover across the street and immediately called 911,” Davis said. “We know this because it was captured on private surveillance video that we’ve recovered.”“The evidence refutes the notion that Detective Suiter’s partner was anything but just that, his partner,” Davis said.Tabeling also noted that Baltimore police officers usually wear safety holsters, which are designed to prevent suspects from taking a gun during close contact.“They make it pretty tough to get the gun,” Tabeling said.
Citation: Princeton geoscientists report Greenland ice sheet melting rate is increasing (2012, November 20) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2012-11-princeton-geoscientists-greenland-ice-sheet.html More information: Mapping Greenland’s mass loss in space and time, Published online before print November 19, 2012, doi: 10.1073/pnas.1206785109 (PDF)AbstractThe melting of polar ice sheets is a major contributor to global sea-level rise. Early estimates of the mass lost from the Greenland ice cap, based on satellite gravity data collected by the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment, have widely varied. Although the continentally and decadally averaged estimated trends have now more or less converged, to this date, there has been little clarity on the detailed spatial distribution of Greenland’s mass loss and how the geographical pattern has varied on relatively shorter time scales. Here, we present a spatially and temporally resolved estimation of the ice mass change over Greenland between April of 2002 and August of 2011. Although the total mass loss trend has remained linear, actively changing areas of mass loss were concentrated on the southeastern and northwestern coasts, with ice mass in the center of Greenland steadily increasing over the decade. The two used data from the twin satellites used in the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) that orbit in tandem over the Earth. As they pass over the planet they measure very small differences in gravity between the two that correspond to the amount of mass below. In looking at data recorded during the period August 2002 to 2011, they were able to measure the changes in mass of the ice sheet that covers Greenland, which is second only to Antarctica in size. The two found that by analyzing GRACE data very closely they could actually pinpoint the parts of the ice sheet that were changing and by how much. They noted for example, that for the year 2003 to 2004, the bulk of melting occurred along the eastern coast of the island nation, whereas over the following year it was centered in the northeast. Surprisingly, they found that even as the ice sheet as a whole was losing mass, some mass was gained in central Greenland. It’s not known why this has happened, but it’s possibly due to higher amounts of snowfall that might have occurred. The melting of the polar ice sheets is believed to be associated with rising global temperatures, which in turn is believed by most scientists to be the result of increased amounts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere due mainly to human pollutants. As the ice sheets melt, global sea levels rise. By studying melting rates, scientists are able to provide better estimates on how much the sea will rise and when. Current estimates put sea level rise at 0.1 inches per year. Using the numbers from their study, the researchers estimate that sea levels will rise 2.4 inches over the next century from just the melting that is occurring in Greenland. They also note that based on current numbers, it would take approximately 13,000 years for all of the ice in Greenland to melt. Enhanced melting of Northern Greenland in a warm climate (Phys.org)—Princeton geoscientists Christopher Harig and Frederik Simons have been applying new methods to study the amount of ice melt in the Greenland ice sheet. They report in a paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that the rate is approximately 200 billion tons annually and is rising at a rate of approximately 9 billion tons per year. Staff Writer. Covers leadership, media, technology and culture. The only list that measures privately-held company performance across multiple dimensions—not just revenue. This article is included in Entrepreneur Voices on Company Culture, a new book containing insights from more than 20 contributors, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders.During a Tuesday meeting to discuss an overhaul of Uber’s company culture, former board member David Bonderman proved exactly why the conversations needed to happen in the first place. At the start of the all-hands meeting, Arianna Huffington, who was the first woman to join the company’s board last year, announced the addition of Nestlé executive Wan Ling Martello to the board, increasing the representation of women on the board from 14 to 25 percent.“There’s a lot of data that shows when there’s one woman on the board, it’s much more likely that there will be a second woman on the board,” Huffington noted. That’s when Bonderman interrupted.“Actually what it shows is it’s much likely to be more talking.”In the recording obtained by Yahoo Finance, you can hear Huffington respond at first with awkward laughter. And then her reply: “Oh. Come on, David. Don’t worry, David will have a lot more talking to do as well.”That is not to be the case, as Bonderman resigned shortly after the meeting, which, it bears repeating, was convened to talk about recommendations to change Uber’s culture after allegations of systemic discrimination and sexual harassment.Related: 3 Lessons Every CEO Can Learn From Travis Kalanick’s Emotional Meeting With Uber’s Female EngineersBonderman, the 74-year-old founding partner of investment firm TPG Capital, apologized for the “disrespectful” comment via an internal memo to Uber employees and issued this statement about his departure:”I do not want my comments to create distraction as Uber works to build a culture of which we can be proud. I need to hold myself to the same standards that we’re asking Uber to adopt. Therefore, I have decided to resign from Uber’s board of directors, effective tomorrow morning.”Earlier on Tuesday, CEO Travis Kalanick also announced that he would be taking a leave of absence in order to, as he shared in an email to the company, “take some time off of the day-to-day to grieve my mother, whom I buried on Friday, to reflect, to work on myself, and to focus on building out a world-class leadership team. The ultimate responsibility, for where we’ve gotten and how we’ve gotten here rests on my shoulders,” Kalanick wrote. “There is of course much to be proud of but there is much to improve. For Uber 2.0 to succeed there is nothing more important than dedicating my time to building out the leadership team. But if we are going to work on Uber 2.0, I also need to work on Travis 2.0 to become the leader that this company needs and that you deserve.”Related: Travis Kalanick to Take a Leave of Absence. Here Are 9 CEOs Who Were Fired or Decided to Step Down.So what exactly is Uber 2.0 going to look like?Over the past few months, former attorney general Eric Holder and Tammy Albarrán, partners at law firm Covington & Burling, were tasked with investigating the allegations made by former engineer Susan Fowler and others. They interviewed more than 200 Uber employees and provided a set of recommendations pertaining to how the company should address discrimination, harassment and retaliation and how it could “ensure that its commitment to a diverse and inclusive workplace was reflected not only in the company’s policies but made real in the experiences of each of Uber’s employees.”The recommendations include:Providing more support for the human resources department and establishing clear protocols to track complaints.Mandatory training for senior executives, HR staffers, managers and people in the position to interview prospective employees, particularly around the topics of promoting inclusion and combatting unconscious bias.In terms of recruiting and developing talent, implementing a blind resume review, and increased transparency when it comes to performance reviews and promotions. The prohibition of romantic or intimate relationships between supervisor/subordinates and the consumption of alcohol during work hours, at after work events and at company-sponsored events. An update of discrimination and harassment policies including instituting a zero-tolerance policy for violators of those rules — no matter what position they hold in the company — and explicit protection against harassment from not only other employees, but third-parties the company deals with such as clients to vendors.Related: A 2013 Letter From Uber’s Travis Kalanick Lays Out Sex Rules for Employees at Company PartyA lot of these seem quite standard. But when you look at former engineer Susan Fowler’s blog post and Kalanick’s 2013 Miami letter side by side, the necessity for Holder and Albarrán to explicitly state things such as the importance of “de-emphasizing alcohol as a component of work events,” or that policies should be applied consistently across the company with no special treatment afforded to any one employee is pretty glaring. One passage in particular about Uber’s 14 cultural values speaks volumes about where Uber ran aground. Holder and Albarrán recommended that the company communicate with its employees to reassess and develop a core list of values that are accessible and easy to understand. “Eliminate those values which have been identified as redundant or as having been used to justify poor behavior, including Let Builders Build, Always Be Hustlin’, Meritocracy and Toe-Stepping, and Principled Confrontation; and encourage senior leaders to exhibit the values on a daily basis and to model a more collaborative and inclusive Uber culture,” the recommendation reads. “Leaders who embody these values should be part of the process of redefining Uber’s values and should be role models for other leaders within the company.”Related: Uber CEO Travis Kalanick Says He Needs to ‘Grow Up’ After Video of Argument With a Driver ReleasedUber has long had a reputation for aggressive tactics in its dealings with regulators and competitors. It was seen, for better or worse, as one of the key drivers of its rapid growth. But clearly, as Uber’s experience shows us, growth and success are not one in the same.In an interview with Vanity Fair in 2014, Kara Swisher asked Kalanick about the nature of the interactions with the leaders of the cities (some of whom he described as “really awesome, but most are uninspired”) his business was disrupting.“If you don’t agree with the core principles, which are the premise of that compromise, then you have to have what I call principled confrontation. And so that is the thing that we do that I think can rub some people the wrong way.”If you’re beginning with the premise that compromise doesn’t work for you, and every interaction is a war of attrition, you can let people build all they want, but what exactly are you working toward? If you’re always hustlin’ — though if they do keep that one, I would urge them to restore the “g” to its rightful place — you don’t stop to think about where the pitfalls may be or whether you might be in the wrong. Uber’s experience shows us that is kind of approach is a recipe for collapsing under the weight of your own hubris.Related: If Elon Musk Can Admit His Mistakes, Then So Can YouIn Uber’s San Francisco headquarters, up until this week, the office’s main conference room was called aptly, the War Room. Bloomberg reported that along with the multitude of changes recommended by Covington & Burling, the room is now going to be called the Peace Room. It’s a bit on nose, but you can appreciate the thought, as long as it’s not just lip service.Uber’s culture is not going to change overnight, but now the company seems to have the self-awareness and tools in place to build an environment where values aren’t used, as per Holder and Albarrán’s description, to “justify poor behavior.”So what can we learn from Uber’s newfound emphasis on internal, rather than external growth? Company culture isn’t about perks or empty aphorisms that look good on a T-shirt. Simply, people want to be heard, they want their work to be valued and they want to be treated with respect. Your reaction to particularly awful days can make or break future success. The better action to take is to remain as calm as possible. Take quiet time to analyze how far you have come. Think about the twists and turns, and what currently has you stopped in your tracks.Numerous conversations revealed that many almost quit their current endeavors. But one common factor as to why they did not quit helped them to prevail: They enjoy what they do too much! Ironically, it has become their way of life.As uncertainty hits, follow these two suggestions:Take the time needed to uncover the better route.Convert a negative frame of mind into a positive.Reframe the situationOne sales technique referred to as “Reframing” applies very well to difficult situations. Whether personal or trying to work with a client, the first step is to figure out where the discontent originates. Upon recognizing the misstep, it becomes easier to work together to find the better solution. By asking a series of questions such as, “What if…” the improved path begins to reveal itself. On the personal side, moving from negative to positive thought is the beginning step for improvement. The change in attitude makes an enormous difference in providing increased opportunity to save the day.The day that you find you are doubting yourself, take private time to consider “the why” that is. Most likely, one of your peers will have had a similar experience. Have a conversation about how they dealt with it and ask for recommendations on how to handle. Their insights won’t necessarily apply or even matter. It’s more about the conversation itself. Just by unleashing the dilemma is all it takes to get back to full steam ahead. As others see you meeting negativity and obstacles head on, they come to admire your steadfast personal brand.Tips:When negativity hits, stop to examine the origin.Decide whether changes need to be made.Should changes be in order, decide whether they are minor or major.Begin the process by eliminating the no longer needed.Create a list of what needs to be fixed.Prioritize the list in order of immediate need.Re-energize yourself and/or business by communicating. –shares Image credit: Shutterstock Fireside Chat | July 25: Three Surprising Ways to Build Your Brand Learn from renowned serial entrepreneur David Meltzer how to find your frequency in order to stand out from your competitors and build a brand that is authentic, lasting and impactful. Source:https://news.illinois.edu/view/6367/775169 Reviewed by James Ives, M.Psych. (Editor)Apr 17 2019Oxidants found within living organisms are byproducts of metabolism and are essential to wound-healing and immunity. However, when their concentrations become too high, inflammation and tissue damage can occur. University of Illinois engineers have developed and tested a new drug-delivery system that senses high oxidant levels and responds by administering just the right amount of antioxidant to restore this delicate balance. The findings are published in the journal Small. Many pharmaceuticals include specialized polymers and particles that control the timing or concentration of the drug released once administered, the researchers said. However, these additives can hamper crystallization during the manufacturing phase of some drugs – like antioxidants – causing them to dissolve in the body in an uncontrolled manner.”We saw an opportunity here to develop a different kind of drug-delivery system that could sense the level of oxidant in a system and respond by administering antioxidant as needed,” said chemical and biomolecular engineering professor and study co-author Hyunjoon Kong.Kong and his team found a way to assemble crystals of catechin – the bright green antioxidant found in green tea – using a polymer that can sense when oxidant concentrations become too high. The researchers tested the responsiveness of the resulting catechin crystal-containing polymer in the common freshwater planktonic crustacean Daphnia magna, the water flea.”Heart rate is an indication of the extent to which potentially toxic chemicals influence physiology in water fleas,” Kong said. “Daphnids are often used to monitor environmental impacts on ecological systems, and because their hearts are similar to those of vertebrates, they are also used to evaluate the efficacy of cardioprotective drugs.”Related StoriesChronic inflammation removes motivation by reducing dopamine in the brainCancer incidence among children and young adults with congenital heart diseaseStudy measures antioxidant levels in edible insectsThe researchers exposed the daphnids to water contaminated with sublethal concentrations of the natural oxidant hydrogen peroxide while monitoring their heart rate. They found that the daphnids’ mean heart rates dropped from 348 to 290 and 277 beats per minute, depending on the concentration of hydrogen peroxide used. When the team added the new catechin crystal assembled with polymer to the experiment, the water fleas eventually recovered a close-to-normal heart rate.Beyond the potential pharmaceutical uses for the new polymer, Kong’s group is looking into its use for curtailing the impact of highly oxidizing chemicals in natural waterways.”Hydrogen peroxide is often used to clean water fouled by excessive algae, and this raises concern about how the oxidant may be affecting living organisms in water,” he said. “We think this new antioxidant-delivery system could be used to address the problem of over-oxidized natural waters.”The researchers plan to push ahead with developing the polymer for pharmaceutical and environmental uses. “This study proved a concept, but we have more work to do,” Kong said. “There is concern over the safety of the specific polymer we used – polyethylenimine diselenide – but we are getting close to finding a viable replacement.”
70% of HGSC relapse despite treatment, becoming resistant to chemotherapy, which makes the new discovery a true potential breakthrough in the treatment of this tumor. All life at cellular and organism level depends upon thousands of life processes that provide and degrade a range of chemicals required for proper function of the cells and tissues. These intricately interdependent processes together they make up the body’s metabolism. By Dr. Liji Thomas, MDJul 14 2019A new study shows that targeting a specific protein found within quickly spreading high-grade serous carcinomas (HGSC) of the ovary could help contain these cancers. HGSC is the most common and deadly form of epithelial ovarian cancer, which is itself the deadliest cancer of the female reproductive tract. When HGSC spreads outside the ovaries, within the peritoneal cavity, it forms detached balls called spheroids, which may look and act differently from the adherent cells of the primary tumor. The study is published in the current issue of the journal Molecular Cancer Research. However, as researcher Erika Dahl explains, “A hallmark of cancer cells is that their metabolic processes are often different from normal, healthy cells.” This is called metabolic reprogramming. As one of the outcomes, study author Katherine Aird says, “Cancer cells can grow forever without stimulus.” Cancer cell Illustration. Image Credit: Jovan Vitanovski / Shutterstock The good news about the newly discovered protein is that it can be inhibited, thus inactivating cell processes within ovarian cancer cells to switch them from a constitutively proliferative cell cycle to one which results in senescence, or going to sleep. The key role of the protein was identified on cell culture experiments by researchers at Penn State College of Medicine. The current study focused on teasing out the differences in the metabolism of ovarian cancer cells by comparing them with cells from a normal fallopian tube. The route used to achieve this was quantitative spectrometry, which helped analyze the metabolites produced by various cellular pathways in the two type of tissue. Among the differences, it was revealed that cancer cells utilized glucose, a form of sugar, via the key energy cycle called the citric acid cycle, far more often, as against the more common use of an oxygen-requiring pathway called aerobic glycolysis. This accounts for the presence of a high level of citric acid activity in all high-grade serous ovarian cancer cells. Related StoriesStudy reveals link between inflammatory diet and colorectal cancer riskVirus killing protein could be the real antiviral hero finds studyNew study to ease plight of patients with advanced cancerThis means that many therapies which inhibit the breakdown of glucose (glycolysis) to destroy cancer cells may be quite ineffective. Dahl commented that this could often result, in fact, in the production of toxins that harm normal healthy tissue.Instead, the team in the current study looked at the effects of inhibiting the wildtype or normal form of an enzyme, isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 (IDH 1), which plays a vital part in the citric acid cycle. They selected this protein because it was the only one in this pathway that is expressed at higher levels in both adherent and spheroid tumor cells. Increased activity of this enzyme severely impacts progression-free survival, which is an important outcome measured in assessing the effectiveness of any cancer therapy.Mutants of this protein are common in other tumors, but the wildtype form is typically present in cells within HGSC. The researchers hypothesize that the presence of this enzyme is an important advantage to these cells, and its inhibition is a key step to inducing senescence. The researchers found that suppressing the work of this protein stopped cell division completely by suppressing the activity of multiple other genes, inhibiting vital metabolic pathways. Both adherent cells of the primary tumor, and spheroid cells of secondary HGSC, become senescent when the wildtype IDH 1 enzyme is inhibited. Thus, this could be an excellent way to treat HGSC at all stages. This is an important consideration, as ovarian cancers are rarely diagnosed at early stages. While there are already FDA (US Food and Drug Administration)-approved drugs against one of the mutant forms of this enzyme, the team wondered whether they would work against the wildtype form as well. They found that one did, and this is now a part of their continued research agenda.Aird says, “One of our long-term goals is to try and repurpose this already-approved drug as a treatment for this form of ovarian cancer.” Besides adapting existing drugs against the enzyme to fight this type of cancer, the researchers want to examine the differences in the metabolic functioning of normal and HGSC cells more closely. Another goal is to examine the effectiveness of combining IDH 1 inhibitors with other treatments.
