Essential Reading! Get my 2nd book: The Lost Art of Closing “In The Lost Art of Closing, Anthony proves that the final commitment can actually be one of the easiest parts of the sales process—if you’ve set it up properly with other commitments that have to happen long before the close. The key is to lead customers through a series of necessary steps designed to prevent a purchase stall.” Buy Now Some projects and tasks make it onto your to-do list or your task manager without much thought or consideration. Ideas, requests, or opportunities show up, and they appear important enough for you to write them down. You have every intention of pursuing the idea, responding to the request, or capitalizing on the opportunity. However, sometimes the things you captured don’t stand the test of time. Here is a quick aside. Have you ever been so busy that you went a couple of days without responding to your email, opening a few days later to find that some of the emails were resolved without you having done anything other than allowing time to pass? Your task list isn’t all that different. If some idea has lived on your task list for months or quarters, maybe it isn’t something you want to pursue. If your task list is already overwhelming, it doesn’t help to allow it to become cluttered with things you don’t want or need to do. You remove the psychic burden of carrying these unfinished tasks by deleting them or putting them on a list to incubate, somewhere out of the way of the tasks that are important enough for you to complete. The same is true of projects. You may want or need to do some project and put in your task manager or on your to-do list. At the time you created the project, you were highly interested and motivated by the idea. As the months have passed, so has your interest and enthusiasm. You can safely remove the project from your list and move it to a master list of things you want to consider again at some time in the future, where it will be waiting for you should you be inspired by the idea again.A lot of us fear missing out on things and have a propensity to say “yes” when we should say “no.” But saying “yes” to small things means saying “no” to bigger things. You steal your margin by committing to things that don’t move you closer towards your real goals and objectives. It is easier to make a commitment than to break one; be slow to say “yes” and fast to say “no.” If you cluttered up your task list with commitments you should not have made, call the person to whom you said “yes” and apologize that you can’t keep your commitment, and then remove it from your task list.By liberating yourself from the projects, tasks, and commitments that you aren’t going to complete, you free yourself from the burden of carrying these things into the future with you. You also create more space for what is truly important to creating the results—and the future—you want.
Essential Reading! Get my first book: The Only Sale Guide You’ll Ever Need “The USA Today bestseller by the star sales speaker and author of The Sales Blog that reveals how all salespeople can attain huge sales success through strategies backed by extensive research and experience.” Buy Now You don’t help your dream client produce better results by giving up pursuing them. If what you do would improve their results, they need you to persist. You don’t help your company by quitting when the client you want is on lockdown because due to their deep relationship with your competitor. Their loyalty is one of the attributes that make them such an attractive client. You don’t help yourself by calling it quits when a prospect is difficult to acquire, and there are no bonuses, commissions, or accolades for not winning a client—or for a lack of intestinal fortitude. You don’t gain any real additional time by eliminating the effort of chasing down the most desirable prospects. You are going to be prospecting, making sales calls, and selling anyway. Instead, you’ll likely be doing the same things every day, but just with prospects who aren’t quite as good as the ones you gave up pursuing. You are going to eliminate some prospects from consideration because they don’t value what you do, prospects for whom you are a for fit. You are going to disqualify others because they are a poor fit for you and your company, being unwilling to invest in the results you produce or possessing a culture that makes them undesirable. You will lose some contests to competitors, and some of those losses will likely be your dream clients, where the competition is immense. The only people who win their dream clients are the people who professionally pursue them over time. The reason so many others fail isn’t that their offering isn’t right, that they lack the salesmanship, or that an opportunity will never present itself. Instead, they lose because they give up too soon and aren’t present when that opportunity becomes available.Persist. Persist. Persist. Persist. The great Harvey McKay learned from a veteran salesperson that the right time to give up is when “They die, or you die.” I suggest that even after one of you dies, you call for the next three to four weeks, just to make certain. Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Tuesday said the State government was discharging all obligations set forth by the Upper Yamuna River Board (UYRB) in terms of share and allocation of water to Delhi.“We decided to release 120 cusecs of additional raw water to Delhi via the river course at the request of Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources. I wish to emphasise that due to acute shortage of water in the Yamuna, Haryana has to shift to a five -group rotation instead of four groups every January. Despite the consequent adverse impact on drinking water supplies to thousands of our villages and several towns, we have never reduced the supply to Delhi. In fact, presently we are supplying 120 cusecs over and above our obligations,” said Mr. Khattar in a demi-official letter sent to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in reply to his letter.“It is a harsh fact that the issue of shortage of raw water at Wazirabad and its impact on supplies of VVIP areas has been raised by the Delhi Jal Board for the past 20 years. The current alleged shortage of about 60 million gallons per day (MGD) is 6.7% of the total treatment capacity of more than 900 MGD. This can easily be resolved through internal actions of the DJB,” said Mr. Khattar.Mr. Khattar added: “As for your (Mr. Kejriwal) request, we were supplying about 1,050 cusecs from Munak Canal when Delhi decided to drag Haryana into multiple litigations. We started releasing additional 150 cusecs from Munak, so that about 100-120 cusecs may be received at Wazirabad via DD-8 in the river course. We have decided to extend the period of release of this additional water up to June 30, 2018, subject to the condition that Delhi withdraws all cases from the NGT and Delhi High Court.”

BOSTON — Sixteen-year-old Evgenia Medvedeva started giggling when she learned her free skate score at the world championships had set a record. Then she summed it up in English: “Wow.”The Russian teen capped a dominant debut season April 2 with a world title, earning 150.10 points to break Yuna Kim’s record from the 2010 Olympics. Medvedeva moved up from third after the short program to add to her Grand Prix Final and European titles.American Ashley Wagner skated last and sent the home crowd into a frenzy with a personal-best score that moved her from fourth to second, the first U.S. woman in a decade to win a medal at worlds. Another Russian teen, Anna Pogorilaya, took bronze.Medvedeva looked a bit hesitant during the March 31 short program in her first senior worlds. But she was captivating from the start Saturday. She landed seven triple jumps with never a hint of trouble, throwing an arm above her head on many of them.“I won’t realize quickly I won today because one year ago I was still skating juniors,” she said through a translator. It was a performance both youthful and mature at the same time. The program opens with Medvedeva peering out into the crowd with a look of wide-eyed wonder. When it was over, she thrust both fists into the air in triumph.“Actually I don’t really have any emotions right now — I left everything on the ice,” she said afterward.Sitting in the kiss-and-cry area, the teenager came back out. She bopped her head to the music as she waited for her scores, squeezing her eyes shut and clutching a stuffed animal tight as the marks were about to be announced. She finished with a total of 223.86 points, following in the footsteps of Adelina Sotnikova, who won the Olympic gold medal at age 17 in 2014, and Elizaveta Tuktamysheva, who won last year’s world title at 18.No American woman had finished on the podium at worlds since Kimmie Meissner took gold and Sasha Cohen bronze in 2006. Even with Gold’s mistakes, her score guaranteed that the drought would end — it was just a question of whether it would be Gold or Wagner.Wagner had the crowd shrieking from the moment she landed her triple flip-triple toe loop combination, and the powerhouse program to the Moulin Rouge soundtrack earned her a big score for choreography and expression despite two under-rotated jumps. She received 142.23 points for 215.39 total. As the music ended, her jaw dropped in exhilaration, an ending that couldn’t have been more different from the “horrific experience” the last time she competed in Boston. At nationals in 2014, she came in as the two-time defending champion then fell twice in her free skate to finish a distant fourth. With Wagner still haunted by those memories earlier this week, best friend Adam Rippon — who went on to finish sixth in the men’s competition — reminded her that in 2014, she was out of shape, overweight and under-trained.Not anymore. “Because of 2014, I’m sitting here today,” Wagner said. She was still selected for the 2014 Olympic team because of her previous successes, but the debate about whether she deserved the berth in Sochi stung.“I have so many people that for so many parts of my career say this has been given to me; I don’t deserve this,” she said.“The fact that I have a world silver medal because of something I did, not because of something everybody else didn’t do,” Wagner added, “that is so sweet.”Skating after Gold, Wagner could tell from the crowd’s reaction that a mistake had occurred. She realized there was an opening for a medal but quickly banished the thought from her mind. There’s a picture on a wall at TD Garden of the podium from the 2014 U.S. Championships — Wagner is cropped out of it. Now she’ll forever be in all the photos from the 2016 worlds, a feat she achieved at the age of 24, when many skaters have retired.“It definitely gets harder. I see this one over here,” she said, motioning to Medvedeva, “do long program run-throughs with triple-triples on the end of every combination, and I just think, ‘Oh, to be 16 again.’ Then I remember that at 16 I couldn’t do that.”Pogorilaya, 17, was the least accomplished of the three Russians coming in, finishing third behind Medvedeva and Elena Radionova at both the national championships and European Championships. But she skated two clean programs in Boston to again finish third — this time against a much deeper field. She received 139.71 points for 213.69 total.Even after her fall, Gold still had a chance to pass Pogorilaya and secure a medal. But she also did a double lutz instead of planned triple and lost potential points because of the edge on her triple flip takeoff. She earned 134.86 points for 211.29 total.“I feel really ashamed of how I skated and I want to apologize to my country and to the crowd here — there’s really no excuse for it,” a dismayed Gold said later.“It just shows that I’m not up there with the rest of the world. … I still have hopes for the 2018 Olympics, but we’ll have to step back and re-evaluate what’s realistic for my future skating.”(RACHEL COHEN, AP Sports Writer)TweetPinShare0 Shares
White remained the preferred colour choice among the Indian passenger vehicle buyers in 2018, with 43 per cent of the new cars produced in the country donning the shade. The presence of achromatic colours — white, black, grey and silver — overshadowed their chromatic counterparts by a long distance.According to “BASF Colour Report 2018 for Automotive OEM Coatings”, the Indian car market recorded a 10 per cent production growth in 2018 as against the previous calendar year. In India, almost all car segments are growing with high mileage small cars, such as basic and subcompact, accounting for more than half of the total production. Moreover, SUVs are also becoming popular among consumers, with the segment making up 23 per cent of the new cars. While white accounted for the most popular colour choice among car buyers with 43 per cent share, grey and silver came in at a distant second spot with 15 per cent share each. Among the achromatic colours, black had only 3 per cent share.Among the chromatic colours, red made up 9 per cent share of all the new cars produced in India in 2018, followed by blue at 7 per cent. Brown and orange came in at third and fourth with 3 per cent and 2 per cent share, respectively. Yellow, green and violet cornered in 1 per cent share each.In the SUV segment, white was the most sought after colour with 41 per cent of the customers going for it, followed by grey (15 per cent), silver (14 per cent), red (12 per cent), blue (7 per cent) and black (4 per cent).advertisementSo far as basic car segment is concerned, here also white triumphed over others with 35 per cent share, followed by grey and silver (17 per cent each), red (9 per cent), blue (8 per cent) and brown and orange (5 per cent each).A similar pattern could be seen in segments such as sub-compact, compact and midsize, where white was way ahead in popularity than other colours with shares of 42 per cent, 46 per cent and 40 per cent, respectively.Even in China, white is the most popular color for the new cars with an overall share of 59 per cent. The strong presence of white can be attributed to the colour’s preference for new engine vehicles. In the Asia-Pacific market, white has a strong iconic value and has accrued 53 per cent share.BASF’s portfolio is spread across six segments — chemicals, materials, industrial solutions, surface technologies, nutrition and care and agricultural solutions. In India, the firm has its innovation campus in Mumbai and research and development centers in Mangalore.ALSO READ | Land Rover launches 2019 Discovery Sport Landmark Edition, price starts at Rs 53.77 lakhALSO READ | Tata Motors increases prices of Hexa, SUV now starts at Rs 12.99 lakhALSO READ | Maruti Suzuki launches new Baleno at Rs 5.45 lakh, new grille and alloy wheels main attractions

New York – A residential building in Manhattan exploded and collapsed on Wednesday, killing at least one person and injuring 17 others as a serious fire engulfed the area in thick smoke, officials said. The explosion struck a building at 116th Street and Park Avenue in the East Harlem neighborhood of New York, where witnesses said they were jolted awake by what sounded like an earthquake.Mainline train services in and out of Grand Central terminal were suspended as a result of the incident next to its tracks. Hundreds of police and firefighters were on site with emergency service vans and fire trucks, as a dense white column of smoke spewed into the sky next to the Metro-North railway line, an AFP reporter said.A spokesman for energy company Con Edison told local TV channel NY 1 that it got a call from the building alerting them to a possible gas leak at 9:13 am, shortly before the blast.Local residents also spoke of smelling gas in the area. But Con Edison stopped short of confirming that the explosion had been caused by a gas leak.“Obviously what we see is something that would be consistent (with a gas leak) but we can’t say at this point what caused (the explosion),” the spokesman told NY1.“It was an explosion and a building collapsed,” a spokesman for New York Police Department told AFP. Scores of firefighters were dispatched to the scene.Police told AFP one person was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital and that 17 other people had been injured.“The call came at 9:34 am (1334 GMT). It is a residential building. The New York Fire Department is in the process of extinguishing the fire,” another police spokesman added. The New York Fire Department told AFP that more than 168 fire fighters and 44 different units had responded to the explosion.Witness Robert Santiago told CBS that he was sleeping when all of a suddenly the explosion shook his bed and the floor.“It smells very bad out here. It smells like rubble,” he said.“I thought the world was coming to an end, an earthquake or something like that. Terrible,” he added.Another witness told CBS that “a lot of people” lived in the six-storey building, including one of her friends.“I’m scared, I’m scared. I came out to see the situation,” she told the channel from behind the security cordon at the scene.“I’m very scared. I’m shaking. I’m asthmatic and I’m not supposed to be here. I just came,” she added.Another witness who lived across the street told the channel that his relatives living further way also felt the blast.“I saw a lady running with no shoes on. It was crazy. It was like a war zone,” he said.“First of all I thought it was an earthquake. I got calls from my family who felt it too and that was all the way up town. Man, it was crazy,” he added. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority said Metro-North trains had been suspended indefinitely in and out of Grand Central because of the building explosion and collapse.“Southbound trains are being held at stations to await further instructions. Northbound trains are being held in Grand Central,” said an emergency notice published on its website.

Enbridge sets out oil pipeline growth plan to cover Western Canada for a decade by Ian Bickis, The Canadian Press Posted Jun 8, 2017 11:08 am MDT Last Updated Jun 8, 2017 at 12:05 pm MDT AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email CALGARY – Enbridge Inc (TSX:ENB) has outlined a pipeline expansion plan it says can cover the expected oil production increase from Western Canada for the next decade. The company’s executive vice-president of liquids pipelines says the replacement and restoration of its Line 3 pipeline, combined with upgrades and adjustments to other pipelines on its mainline system, could add about 875,000 barrels a day of capacity.“These solutions can be staged to meet industry’s needs through to about 2028,” Guy Jarvis said Thursday at an investor day meeting in Toronto. The capacity increases would include 375,000 barrels a day from restoring the full capacity of Line 3, plus about 500,000 barrels a day of capacity elsewhere on the mainline system that Jarvis said would require little to no regulatory permitting.Jarvis said that shippers want Enbridge to continue with plans to expand the mainline system that runs from near Edmonton to Superior, Wis., due to uncertainty about other projects.“There is still concern amongst our shippers about the viability of the competing pipelines getting approved, and if approved, getting built,” he said. His comments come as the future of Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain project remains cloudy. The alliance between the B.C. Green and NDP parties has vowed to use all means available to stop the project despite it being fully permitted with a scheduled September construction start.Enbridge’s growth plan is dependent on it replacing the Line 3 pipeline, which still requires regulatory approval in Minnesota where it faces a determined opposition. The company said it could start construction on the Canadian portion of Line 3 as early as this summer and expects U.S. regulatory approvals sometime in mid-2018.

On December 8, 2006, America’s Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) published a final rule on Emergency Mine Evacuation which replaces the Emergency Temporary Standards (ETS) published on March 9, 2006. JacksonKelly LLC explains that the “Final Rule was effective upon its publication and makes permanent the underground coal mine requirements of the ETS with some minor changes. The accident reporting requirements that apply to all mines are finalized with more significant modifications.“The Final Rule retains the language that accidents shall be reported at once without delay and within 15 minutes. This requirement is applicable to the 12 types of immediately reportable accidents as defined in 30 C.F.R. § 50.2 (h)(1) through (12). However, the Final Rule amends the definitions of some types of accidents. Specifically, 30 C.F.R. § 50.2(h)(3) relating to entrapment now requires that an entrapment lasting more than 30 minutes or which has reasonable potential to cause death be reported. The Final Rule also amends subsection § 50.2(h)(6) to now require that unplanned fires in underground mines not extinguished within 10 minutes (as opposed to 30 minutes) be reported within 15 minutes. The immediate accident reporting requirement for surface mine fires that burn for more than 30 minutes of discovery is unchanged in the Final Rule. The regulatory provisions should be read in conjunction with the requirements of Section 5 of the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act). Section 5 requires operators to report the “death of an individual at the mine or the injury or entrapment of an individual at the mine which has reasonable potential to cause death within 15 minutes of realizing such an event has occurred, and imposes a minimum penalty of $5,000 for each infraction.”JacksonKelly goes on to explain that in attempts to streamline the process of notifying MSHA of an accident, “the Final Rule eliminates the need for operators to first report an accident to the District Office. Written comments and public hearing testimony received by MSHA following publication of the ETS indicated that the old system for notifying MSHA of an accident was inefficient and time consuming.” MSHA agreed and has created an accident report call centre where a person will answer calls 24/7. Calling the call centre, fulfills the immediate reporting requirements.Mandatory requirements of the new rule applicable to underground coal mines include:Availability of additional gas detectors for the purpose of alerting miners of the need to don selfcontained self-rescuers (SCSRs) Installation and use of directional lifelines in escapewaysQuarterly emergency mine evacuation training, including a drillStorage of additional SCSRs in working places, escapeways, and where outby crews work or mtravel, as well as on man tripsSubmission of a training plan and programme of instruction for improved training on SCSRs.Annual SCSR training is to be conducted in smoke, simulated or real, while breathing through a realistic training unit. A copy of the final rule may be obtained from MSHA’s web site at the following link: http://www.msha.gov/REGS/FEDREG/FINAL/2006finl/06-9608.pdf
A subsidiary company of Minefinders, a precious metals mining and exploration company, has commenced a binding arbitration process seeking approximately $10 million in damages from Ausenco International. This was launched on May 22 by Cía Minera Dolores (CMD), before the International Centre for Dispute Resolution of the American Arbitration Association. In addition to the damages, CMD seeks to recover the costs of the arbitration and its legal fees. Separately, CMD has assumed responsibility for the final stages of commissioning the multi-million ounce Dolores gold and silver mine in Mexico. Minefinders continues to expect the mine will commence commercial production in mid-2008. Minefinders believes it has adequate funds in place and available from its revolving credit line to meet its cash needs for the commissioning of the Dolores Mine until the mine reaches full commercial production. The claim for damages relates to breaches by Ausenco of contracts between CMD and the Ausenco companies, under which Ausenco Americas was to provide engineering and design services for the Dolores mine and Ausenco International was to act as construction manager. In the arbitration Minefinders alleges that the Ausenco companies were responsible for a number of engineering, design and construction problems and delays that increased the cost of developing the Dolores mine compared with expectations prior to the February 14, 2008 study. A portion of this additional cost will be recouped should Minefinders be successful in the arbitration.Minefinders says it is aware that Ausenco International filed a writ of summons in the Supreme Court of British Columbia on May 9, 2008, against Minefinders and CMD for allegedly not paying $1.9 million under the construction management agreement. The writ of summons has not been served, and all disputes under the construction management agreement and the engineering services agreement between the parties must be decided by binding arbitration. CMD has demanded that the writ against CMD be withdrawn based upon the mandatory arbitration clause and as against Minefinders because Minefinders is not a party to any of the relevant agreements. CMD intends to vigorously defend against any such claims by Ausenco International or Ausenco Americas.Minefinders is in the final stages of commissioning the multi-million ounce Dolores gold and silver mine in Mexico. Construction at Dolores is substantially complete. Mining within the pit began last fall and, to date, more than 7.3 Mt of material has been moved and 700,000 t of development ore stockpiled. Ore is now being crushed and placed on the leach pad with the recently commissioned conveying and stacking system. The mine is expected to have a 15-year life as an open pit mine with additional potential as a high-grade underground mine in the future. The company continues its exploration efforts on several other prospective projects in Mexico to build a quality pipeline of precious metals projects for future growth.
Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram Fitness entrepreneur and award-winning personal trainer Kayla Itsines has been named the wealthiest female in the prestigious ‘2018 Financial Review Young Rich List’ aged 40 and under. The Greek Australian came in at #5 together with her fiancé Tobias Pearce (#6), who jumped up the list from number 40 last year with a joint wealth of $486 million. They are the wealthiest self-made 20-somethings in Australia after enjoying enormous success with their fitness app ‘Sweat’. Their company is now on track to turn over $100 million this year alone.“Designed as a personal trainer on your smartphone, Itsines and Pearce have evolved what was a Bikini Body Guide e-book into Apple’s largest grossing health and fitness app,” writes the AFR.“The app, which promotes 28-minute workouts, has expanded to offer training guides from US-based Kelsey Wells and yoga sessions with Sjana Elise Earp. With a combined social media reach of more than 35 million people, Sweat is available in seven languages in 155 countries. More than 30 million users have created an account. The subscription based app generated $90 million in revenue in 2017-18.”The dynamic duo who were engaged earlier in the year, have built a fitness empire with more than 10 million followers on Instagram and Facebook, which includes models and Hollywood celebrities delivering an inspirational success story with phenomenal revenue and profit growth in a short space of time.Kayla Itsines on the cover of The Australian Financial Review Magazine. Photo: SuppliedBased in Adelaide, the 27-year-old Greek Australian personal trainer started her journey towards fame eight years ago when she launched her own training and nutrition guide #BBG (BikiniBodyGuides) after completing a personal training course at the Australian Institute of Fitness.Soon after, she developed a 28-minute high intensity workout targeting the whole body, and in 2015 her first e-book and #sweatwithkayla application were released.Within a few years, Kayla created a global community while travelling around Europe, the US and Australia, hosting boot camps and meeting her followers, transforming the bodies of thousands of women all over the globe, inspiring them to achieve their ultimate goal; a healthy lifestyle and body confidence.Kayla and Tobi’s Bikini Body Training Company also won the national prize as Australia’s emerging business of 2015 at the prestigious Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards.Reflecting on her success, Itsines, who has no intention of leaving South Australia told the AFR that she wished she knew earlier that anything was possible.“In Adelaide you are not told you have the opportunity to be a superstar. If I was to grow up somewhere like New York, everyone there is very confident, and everyone wants to make it,” she says.“If I could change anything, I would talk about the opportunity of being an entrepreneur in schools. I didn’t even know what that word meant in school. I was [like], ‘what is that word?’ ‘Oh, you know, someone who goes off and does their own thing’. I was [like], ‘what?’,” said Itsines who together with Pearce owns more than 12 investment properties in SA.The famous trainer celebrates her Greek heritage through her social media and particularly enjoys posting random videos of her Greek grandparents who seem to be part of her everyday life. She is an advocate for the Mediterranean diet, indulges in Greek coffee and admits that one of her biggest weaknesses is her grandmother’s traditional Greek cooking.Kayla with her yiayia and pappou. Photo: FacebookMeanwhile fellow Greek Australian entrepreneur Scott Stavretis also made AFR‘s prestigious list, ranking number 36 with his outsourcing and call centre business, Acquire BPO.A serial entrepreneur, he started at the age of 16 by establishing the first internet service provider on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula 22 years ago in 1996. Now at 38, Stavretis is at the helm of or owns significant stakes in five technology-focused companies. The chief executive of Acquire BPO, made his debut on BRW Young Rich in 2016 with an estimated $46 million fortune. Today he sits at $69 million. The dynamic entrepreneur also operates Degunt, a cloud-based bookkeeping company and SHORE Solutions, a Philippines-based sister company to Acquire BPO that was bought in 2014.However, according to AFR, Stavretis’ biggest asset is Acquire BPO, which turns over more than $100 million annually, providing call centre support for companies in Australia, such as Flexigroup, Vocus Communications and Europcar, and in the US for the likes of cloud-based phone system company RingCentral, a New York Stock Exchange-listed company with market capitalisation of more than $2 billion. For a record seventh year, Atlassian co-founders Mike Cannon-Brookes and Scott Farquhar (joint #1 & #2) top the combined 2018 Financial Review Young Rich List with a record $14.2 billion.Scott Stavretis ranked number 36.Interestingly, only 10 women made the cut in this year’s list overall, just one up from the nine that made the list in 2017 and eight in 2016, showing a serious gap in the number of self-made, super-wealthy Australian women.
Aston Villa manager Dean Smith insists his team has what it takes to defeat Leeds United when both sides face off next weekend.Villa have been in good form of late, having won four of their last seven games in the Sky Bet Championship, and are currently unbeaten since their loss to Queens Park Rangers in October.Since the appointment of Smith as manager, The Villans have jumped from 17th to eighth on the league standings and have the promotion playoff spots within grasp. Aston Villa’s upcoming opponents, Leeds, are also on a good run of form and have won their last five games to return to the top of the table.Smith, however, insists his team are looking forward to the game against Leeds and believe they can beat the league leaders.Aston Villa explains why they spent so much money on players Manuel R. Medina – September 6, 2019 According to Aston Villa’s chief executive, the team needed to spend £144.5 million on 12 players in order to stay competitive.“It’s another one we’re looking forward to”, Smith told Aston Villa’s official website.“It’s Leeds United at home in front of another close to full house.” “They are in the top two doing well.” ”But we believe we can beat them.”Aston Villa are currently three points behind sixth placed Middlesbrough, and will hope to close the gap to teams above them next weekend.
This is the third in a series on Ascot’s mining proposal near Mount St. Helens.Part 1: http://bit.ly/WpQKkw Part 2: http://bit.ly/WpQLooDuring the last 30 years, mining interests have tried and failed to kick start mining efforts on 900 acres just outside the boundary of the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. Ultimately, they all ran into the same problem: It just didn’t pay to mine on Goat Mountain. In fact, in a little-noticed 1993 legal decision, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management denied a prospecting company, Vanderbilt Gold Corp., permission to explore the claim after an agency review found mineral concentrations too low to be profitable and that mining the area would lose nearly $200 million over its life. Now, a Canadian prospecting company, Ascot Resources Ltd., says record high copper prices could help it make good on the same claims when it resumes test drilling for copper, gold, silver and molybdenum this summer. Ascot hopes its core samples will show the deposits are richer than previous studies show.Ascot’s chances for success, however, may be overwhelmingly low. A Longview Daily News investigation found:• To be profitable, any copper mine in that area likely would have to be an open pit operation, even though Ascot has been coy about what type of mine would be developed. Open pit mining especially would meet with strong environmental objections.
SEATTLE — Officials in Washington state took their first stab at setting rules for the state’s new marijuana industry Thursday, nearly eight months after voters here legalized pot for adults.Among the preliminary regulations: They want to track marijuana from “seed to store.” They’re putting a cap on the number of retail outlets in each county, but not on the number of licensed pot growers or processors. No sales of what the board described as marijuana extracts, such as hash, would be allowed — unless the extract is infused into another product — and all pot-related businesses would have to have security systems, 24-hour video surveillance and insurance. On Thursday, the state released its first draft of guidelines for its nascent pot business. Among the highlights:o All pot-related businesses would have to have security systems, 24-hour video surveillance and insurance.o No sales of marijuana extracts, such as hash, would be allowed — unless the extract is infused into another product.o Marijuana labeling would also include serving sizes, use-by date, allergy info.o Any marijuana product sold at a state-licensed stores would carry a label noting that it “may be habit forming,” accompanied by a logo of Washington state — with a marijuana-leaf silhouette smack in the middle, shown above.— The Associated PressAny marijuana product sold at state-licensed stores would carry a label noting that it “may be habit forming” and that “this product is unlawful outside of Washington state” — accompanied by an official pot logo, featuring Washington state with a marijuana-leaf silhouette smack in the middle.
More than two-fifths (42%) of employee respondents who have taken up a death-in-service benefit do not know how much would be paid out to their loved ones in the event of them passing away, according to research by Direct Line Life Insurance. Its survey, which canvassed the opinions of 2,004 individuals and 100 senior HR professionals whose organisations offer a death-in-service benefit, also found that 17% of employee respondents do not know what this benefit is, and 11% do not know if they would be covered by their employer. The research also found:89% of employer respondents offer employees a death-in-service benefit, with 5% of employers paying less than a years’ wages, 18% paying three to four times an employee’s salary and 5% paying more than five times an employee’s annual salary as standard.68% of employer respondents who offer this benefit increase the cover for employees in senior management positions.43% of employer respondents set the qualifying period for their death-in-service benefit as the completion of a probation period, compared to 40% who make it available from an employee’s first day and 18% who do not pay out until an employee has been at the organisation for at least one year.34% of employee respondents think they would be automatically entitled to receive a death-in-service benefit within their probation period.43% of employee respondents believe their death-in-service benefit will only pay out if they were to die in a workplace-related incident.14% of employer respondents would not release funds for up to three months or more, and 32% would not automatically pay out a death-in-service benefit to an employee’s chosen nominee, instead paying into a discretionary trust.Jane Morgan (pictured), business manager at Direct Line Life Insurance, said: “There is a great deal of confusion and misunderstanding regarding death-in-service. While it would be an invaluable employee benefit for many families if the worst were to happen, the amount paid out is unlikely to cover their outstanding mortgage balance. This could leave families in a financially vulnerable position, especially having lost an income, adding extra pressure at an already emotional and difficult time.”

Free Webinar | Sept 5: Tips and Tools for Making Progress Toward Important Goals June 24, 2014 For all its good, sometimes advances in technology can create new forms of paranoia. Take drones for example. They can be used for taking selfies (“dronies”) or walking the dog, or perhaps someday to deliver goods to-door-door. On the flip side, they can and have been used by the military to spy on and attack people. For those who fear being targeted by anyone — military, private organization or civilian — with a drone, there’s one startup that wants to ease your anxieties. Enter: Domestic Drone Countermeasures (DDC). The group has a Kickstarter page where it describes the threat drones pose and the solution the company has developed.”Drones are becoming more capable all the time and this is why it’s alarming,” the Oregon-based startup says. “They fly with payloads like still cameras, video cameras, infrared detectors, thermal detectors, among other things, and they are already being used for surveillance.Related: This Tiny, Whip-Tailed Robot Can Administer Meds Anywhere In the Body”In the past year,” the company continues, “we developed hardware that can detect drones and have filed patents to safeguard our technology.”The anti-drone system consists of three boxes: a primary command and control module and two detection sensor nodes. Basically, these boxes use a simple Wi-Fi connection to create a mesh grid network that can detect drones flying nearby. When a drone is detected, the system can either sound an alarm or send a notification to a mobile device. For a look at how it works, here’s a video:Related: A ‘Smart’ Cup That Knows What You’re Drinking — And Counts the CaloriesThe command and control module can communicate with nodes up to 200 feet away, the company says. The nodes can usually detect drones within 50 feet in all directions. So, the more nodes that are installed in an area, the larger the detection grid becomes. The DDC’s anti-drone system is not equipped to counter military drones, which “fly too high and are too sophisticated,” the company says. “Our intent is to keep your privacy safe from your neighbors and people you may not know who are flying small drones near your home or office. The Personal Drone Detection Systems are intended to counter small, personal drones with cameras and other sensors that are not being regulated.”The DDC’s Kickstarter page is aiming to raise $8,500 over the next 21 days. So far, backers have pledged only about $1,400. DDC says it aims to start shipping the system by May 2015.Related: A Venture Capital Firm Just Named an Algorithm to Its Board of Directors 3 min read Attend this free webinar and learn how you can maximize efficiency while getting the most critical things done right. in Daily Dose, Data, Headlines, News Share November 29, 2016 759 Views Case-Shiller Home Price Index Home Price Recovery Home Prices 2016-11-29 Seth Welborn Home Prices Cross a ‘Largely Symbolic’ Threshold The September numbers from the S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller Indices look impressive on the surface, surpassing peak 2006 numbers. But U.S. home prices remain still about 20 percent below that pre-recession peak, if you factor in inflation.Ralph McLaughlin, chief economist at Trulia, in fact, said that “crossing this threshold is largely symbolic.”Still, the numbers from September are up, and for the 53rd straight month. According to the index, home prices climbed 5.5 percent compared to a year ago, and 5.1 percent from August. Seattle and Portland led the way, each gaining 11 percent year-over-year. Twelve cities reported greater price increases in the year ending in September versus the year ending in August. The new peak, said David Blitzer, managing director and chairman of the Index Committee at S&P Dow Jones, “will be seen as marking a shift from the housing recovery to the hoped-for start of a new advance.”Miami, Tampa, Phoenix, and Las Vegas, which experienced the biggest booms, remain well below their all-time highs, Blitzer said.“Other housing indicators are also giving positive signals,” he said. “Sales of existing and new homes are rising and housing starts at an annual rate of 1.3 million units are at a post-recession peak.”For McLaughlin, the index numbers are more ambiguous.“Home prices reaching their nominal pre-recession peaks brings mixed news for the housing market,” McLaughlin said. “It’s good news for homeowners who are no longer underwater, but not so great news for homebuyers who have seen prices outpace incomes for most of the housing market recovery.”McLaughlin called the housing recovery “uneven,” pointing out that markets that reached their pre-recession peaks are almost all in the South or West.”And within those markets,” he said, “it’s mostly high-end homes that have surpassed the peak.”According to the index, while most markets between Dallas and Seattle climbed 8 percent or higher since last year, markets between Cleveland and Boston climbed an average of about 4 percent. New York, though up since last year, showed the lowest annual price gains at just under 2 percent.Click here to view the complete Case-Shiller Home Price Indices for September.
Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer celebrates after the Cardinals defeated the Cleveland Browns 34-20 in an NFL football game Sunday, Nov. 1, 2015, in Cleveland. (AP Photo/David Richard) Your browser does not support the audio element. 0 Comments Share “[Bruce Arians] had a frank conversation with us,” defensive lineman Frostee Rucker said of what happened in the locker room at halftime. “He had a frank conversation with us about how we were playing in the first half. Obviously, we weren’t playing up to our standard and we had to turn that around quick. He barks and we listen.”“The first half (we were) sluggish,” safety Tyrann Mathieu said. “I don’t know what it was, but it wasn’t our type of football. We got a mouthful from B.A. at halftime and a lot of guys stepped up in the second half and we started making plays.”The Cardinals forced a Browns punt on the opening possession of the second half, then went on to score a touchdown four plays into their first drive of the third quarter. After forcing another punt the next time Cleveland had the ball, the Cardinals needed just four plays to score again, retaking a lead they would never relinquish. To say a 34-20 game was a rout would be inaccurate, but the Cardinals really dominated the second half. The Browns tallied just 98 yards of net offense over the final two quarters, with the Cardinals forcing a pair of turnovers. The defense harassed and battered McCown while being stout against the run, and ended the only two drives that saw the Browns cross into Arizona territory with turnovers. The 5: Takeaways from the Coyotes’ introduction of Alex Meruelo Derrick Hall satisfied with D-backs’ buying and selling Former Cardinals kicker Phil Dawson retires But something changed for them at halftime, and as the team reaches the midway point of its season, there is a hope — maybe even a belief — that what you saw in the second half is more indicative of what kind of team the Cardinals really are.“Six and two is not bad in the NFL,” Mathieu said. “Those two losses are games that we felt like we were in control of, and at some point in the game, we had an opportunity to win.“Going forward, we need to start fast, play consistent for four quarters and win the turnover battle with these teams coming up on our schedule.” – / 18 TEMPE, Ariz. — Through 30 minutes of football Sunday, the Arizona Cardinals trailed the Cleveland Browns by a score of 20-10 and looked rather poor in the process.Though they had gained 225 net yards, the Cardinals lost a pair of fumbles and seemed to have no answer for the Josh McCown-led Browns offense. When play resumed, as the picture quality on TV looked worse for many viewers around the Valley, the team itself looked better. Much, much better. Top Stories LISTEN: Bruce Arians, Cardinals head coach Arizona also did not punt in the second half, scoring on five of seven possessions (with the final one being a pair of kneel downs as time expired).“We just pulled our heads out,” receiver Larry Fitzgerald said of what changed. “We played pretty crappy in the first half. First good drive started off, and it was just play after play after play not executing. Coach, we got in the locker room, he was pretty upset as he should have been. We were able to play much better defense. Came out third quarter, got a stop. We were able to make some plays down the field, got it going. It was great to see Troy (Niklas) in there a couple of times and started rolling from there.”What exactly Arians said will not be known by the public, nor is it likely fit for public consumption. Suffice to say whatever it was, it achieved the desired result. However, the third-year coach downplayed what he told the team.“Oh yeah,” he said when asked if too much is being made of it. “It wasn’t even close to when I was young.”If there is something to take away from the game besides Arians’ apparent way with words, it is that the Cardinals are definitely better than the Browns. Their records a good judge of their talent, the road team found a way to struggle for most of 30 minutes and overcome a quartet of turnovers to win rather comfortably. It’s not exactly a recipe for consistent success, but in this case, the effort allowed the Cardinals to reach their bye week with a 6-2 record and a lead in the NFC West. To some, needing to flip the proverbial switch in order to win could be considered a bad thing; to others, the ability to do exactly that could be seen as a positive. Then again, when a deficit seems to be more about what a team is doing to itself rather than what is being done to it, perhaps it makes sense that things could quickly and easily turn around.“It’s very hard to flip it,” Arians said. “When you look at the tape, it was just a few plays in the first half. The turnover where we gave the ball on the 9-yard line. We gave up two great plays. We hold them to a 3rd-and-9 and we gave up a post pattern. We had good pressure. We fumbled the ball going in for a touchdown, but there were a lot of really good things in the first half. It was just a few plays like a 50-yard pass on an easy slant route to a running back, where you cannot give up inside leverage and bite on that fake and miss a tackle. It should have been a 10-yard gain at the worst and it was a 50-yard gain, so there were a few plays.“It wasn’t a lackluster performance. It was just a few plays.”The Cardinals have lost two games this season. There was a common thread throughout them, and that was turnovers along with penalties and missed opportunities inside the red zone. Sunday in Cleveland, Arizona seemed to be on its way to suffering a third defeat to a team that it probably should have beaten because of, well, turnovers. PAPHOS municipality on Monday denied it was dumping an iconic bus that had been used by fighters resisting Eoka B coupists in 1974, and in which four people were killed.Locals and members of the Paphos Green party had publicly voiced concerns that the vehicle had been discovered at a rubbish tip in Geroskipou and was due to go for recycling, but a spokesman for Paphos municipality robustly refuted the allegation.“This is simply not true, the bus is being stored at a municipality storage facility in Geroskipou and not anywhere near a rubbish dump,” he told the Cyprus Mail. The confusion arose after the bus was moved from the Ahmet Rashid Park in central Paphos, where it had remained for years, whilst renovation of the space was underway.“After discussions with the resistance association a few months ago, we informed them that the vehicle would be moved to our facility for a time whilst we discussed a permanent place in Paphos where the bus could go on display,” the spokesman said.He added that the vehicle had been previously been in an open area of the facility, but was moved to a covered area a few days ago.“It will be transferred to a new permanent location in the near future,” he said. The bus is a symbol of the Paphos resistance against the coup and serves as a piece of history to the tragic events which unfolded, said Andreas Evlavis, secretary of the Paphos Green party. It was reported to the Green party offices that the bus had been dumped at the Geroskipou rubbish tip.“Four people were killed in this bus and respect for this must be shown. You don’t throw away history,” he said.He added that the bus should be on permanent public display in Paphos. On the same day as the Greek junta and Eoka B inspired coup against Archbishop Makarios on July 15 1974, the vehicle from Polemi started its journey from Paphos to Limassol, full of resistance fighters loyal to Makarios. Close to Kolossi it was ambushed, and four resistance fighters were killed.“They were on their way to protect Makarios in Nicosia, but members of Eoka B heard about this and stopped the bus, killing four of them,” he said. “The others managed to escape.”The group were led by resistance fighter Mikis Tembriotis, who still lives in Paphos. In June, the Paphos mayor, Phedonas Phedonos officially inaugurated the upgraded park, the result of a joint project between the municipality and betting giant Opap, in a residential area in the centre of Paphos. It consists of plots belonging to a Turkish Cypriot named Ahmet Rashid. When the park was being renovated, the bus disappeared said Evlavis.“This is not just an old bus, this is a symbol, it is part of the history of the town,” he said.He added that particularly as Tembriotis is still alive, the bus should be preserved as a prominent symbol of Paphos. but the Canada government has not responded” Share This Article Related Article As part of the agreement the Mumbai-based Deserve Group was to redevelop slum sprawls on prime plots between Cuffe Parade and Borivli after getting Letters of Intent for the slum development schemes as per due procedure The developer was to build low-cost homes as part of his sale component The SRA scheme allows private developers to rehabilitate slum-dwellers living in structures built before January 2000 in highrises constructed on a portion of the plot the slum occupies As an incentive builders are granted a higher construction area and are allowed to commercially exploit the remaining public land free of cost The scheme which was launched two decades ago with the intention of housing eight lakh families within five years has managed to rehabilitate a little over 15 lakh families until now An official from the state housing department said it has communicated to the SRA that the authority can go ahead with the agreement only if it can get the Canadian Pension Fund on board Mei Mavin spokesperson from the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board said “We do not have any comment to provide on this as we don’t comment on speculation” Officials from the Deserve Group were unavailable for comment A senior state government official who did not wish to be named said “The chief minister was very to defend the title that India won four years ago (Source: AP) Related News The muddle over India’s participation in the Champions Trophy has rattled the Indian team and players now want to know when this ‘uncertainty’ will end The Indian Express has reliably learnt that the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (COA) head Vinod Rai recently spoke to the Indian team captain Virat Kohli and coach Anil Kumble after they sought clarity on the implications of the ICC vs BCCI wrangle that has cast a shadow on India’s participation in the tournament starting June 1 It is learnt that Kohli and Kumble both want the Indian team to take part in the Champions Trophy to be held next month in England and expressed their keenness to get a chance to defend the title that India won four years ago The uncertainty is said to be hampering the Indian players’ mindset with the IPL getting over in the next few weeks and preparations set to begin for India’s title defense The BCCI has already missed the April 25 deadline of submitting its squad to the ICC It was right after speaking to the two important members of the Indian team a few days ago that the COA issued a letter to BCCI acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary to convene a meeting of the selection committee for Champions Trophy immediately “It would be appropriate to make all necessary preparations for ensuring that Team India can successfully defend its title in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 which commences on 1st June 2017 You are aware that the squad representing India at the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 was to be submitted by 25th April 2017 but the squad has not even been selected as yet Please convene a meeting of the selection committee for selecting the squad immediately The squad can then be submitted to the ICC without prejudice to BCCI’s legal rights” the COA’s reply to the BCCI acting secretary said The BCCI will therefore pick the Indian squad for the Champions Trophy irrespective of what happens in its fight with the ICC Earlier in the day the COA directed the BCCI to select the Indian Champions Trophy squad as it disapproved the cricket board’s acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary’s missive seeking the Administrators’ go-ahead in sending a notice to the ICC that threatened to revoke the 2014 MPA and pull out of all ICC events for the ongoing eight-year rights cycle ‘Supportive environment’ The COA has also reminded the BCCI members to provide a “supportive environment” to the Indian team and erase uncertainties ahead of Sunday’s Special General Meeting (SGM) “We believe that any decision taken at the SGM should be predicated on the fact that India has the best team in the world today Team India should be provided with a supportive environment to showcase Indian cricket instead of being surrounded with uncertainty and confusion There has been more than enough negativity surrounding Team India’s participation in the ICC Champions Trophy and the sooner the same is put to rest the better” “The players’ interests are paramount and they must be given the best chance to prepare for defend and retain the ICC Champions Trophy The focus should be on enabling our team to achieve even greater heights and further laurels which will automatically attract higher revenues” the letter said A cricket board functionary however said the BCCI would have picked the squad in any case “See we want to send a notice to the ICC to cure the breach in accordance with the 2014 Members Participation Agreement (MPA) If we send the notice and in case the ICC cures the breach what will happen if we don’t have a squad ready for the Champions Trophy The general body will take a call on our participation in the tournament but we should also have our squad ready The date time and venue of the team selection will be decided by the (acting) secretary” he told this paper The BCCI is peeved at its reduced revenue share of $293 million as per the ICC’s new financial model although it has another $100 million settlement offer on the table The 2014 model was giving the Indian cricket board a revenue share of $570 (gross) based on contribution cost As reported by this paper Choudhary had written consent from over 20 BCCI affiliates to send the notice to the ICC and according to some members he should have gone ahead pre-empting the SGM “A 30-day notice period is mandatory to revoke the MPA and Thursday early morning was the deadline given that India’s Champions Trophy opener is on June 4 Now the ICC will take India’s participation as a fait accompli and will initiate the indemnity clause to seek huge financial recovery if we want to pull out mid-tournament” said an official of an East Zone association The BCCI’s acting secretary however was tied by the Supreme Court’s January 30 order that stated: “… The CEO of BCCI shall report to the Committee of Administrators and the Administrators shall supervise the management of BCCI” For all the latest Thursday’s second-round French Open Superseries badminton singles encounters there was a repeat of clashes that had taken place in the Denmark Open Superseries Premier less than a week ago The top two Indian shuttlers produced near mirror-images of the results they had done in Odense Eighth-seeded Kidambi Srikanth who has risen four spots to the fourth position in the latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings and who had beaten Wong Wing Ki Vincent in straight games in the semi-final last Saturday on his way to the Danish title repeated his triumph over the Hong Kong bustler in similar fashion and by almost identical scores 21-19 21-17 in 37 minutes compared to the 21-18 21-17 verdict that had used up two additional minutes at Odense Park India’s Kidambi Srikanth at the French Open Superseries Image courtesy: Twitter @srikidambi Srikanth’s stable-mate at the Pullela Gopichand Academy Saina Nehwal was unable to overturn the 29-minute 21-10 21-13 reverse she had suffered in Odense at the hands of Japan’s fifth-seeded Akane Yamaguchi and capitulated again in Paris The 27-year-old Indian’s defeat by a 21-9 23-21 scoreline took 10 minutes longer than it had in Denmark but it only succeeded in putting her further down at 1-3 in the career head-to-head meetings with the stocky 20-year-old Japanese powerhouse who progressed to a quarter-final meeting with South Korea’s 25-year-old third seed Sung Ji Hyun However second-seeded PV Sindhu played far better than she had on the opening day of the $325000 event and overwhelmed Japan’s Sayaka Takahashi by a 21-14 21-13 margin The gangling Indian who appeared sharp and aggressive against the Japanese earned a revenge quarter-final meeting with Chinese teenager Chen Yufei who had knocked her out in the opening round of the Denmark Open last week in two straight albeit tough games Like Nehwal whose form has unaccountably dipped after her outstanding opening-round victory in Odense over Spain’s 2016 Olympic gold medallist Carolina Marin B Sai Praneeth put up only lukewarm resistance while going down to 23-year-old Japanese qualifier Kenta Nishimoto at 13-21 17-21 in 44 minutes The result was not entirely unexpected for Praneeth has witnessed a sharp drop in form and performance after his exploits in tournaments leading up to the World Championships like the Singapore Open Superseries in which he had surprised Srikanth to bag the crown The former Indian national champion had shown a streak of prodigality in his first-round fixture with Thailand’s Khosit Phetpradab winning narrowly in three games after squandering huge 15-6 and 16-9 leads in the second game; and his defeat at Nishimoto’s hands did not quite cause the flutter it would have a few months ago As for the 40th-ranked Nishimoto shock conqueror of Malaysia’s aging seventh seed Lee Chong Wei in his opening round on Wednesday the Japanese will cross swords in Friday’s quarter-final with Indonesia’s up-and-coming Anthony Sinisuka Ginting who had scant difficulty in dispatching Hong Kong’s Hu Yun at 21-7 21-16 in two minutes under the half-hour mark The most impressive Indian performer of the day was HS Prannoy who made light of what could have been a tricky pre-quarter-final clash with Denmark’s Hans-Kristian Solberg Vittinghus winning at 21-11 21-12 in a minute under the half-hour mark The 25-year-old Prannoy who was born in Kerala but has been training in Hyderabad now for several years showed a confident streak while taming the man who had sent the tournament’s second seed Son Wan Ho of South Korea home in his opening outing In Friday’s quarter-finals Prannoy runs into another Korean Jeon Hyeok Jin who settled the pretensions of China’s Qiao Bin in a long-drawn battle at 21-16 13-21 21-12 Giant-killer Jeon who had easily knocked out an off-colour No 5 seed Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei in his lung-opener clashes with Prannoy in the final quarter of the draw As for the red-hot Srikanth whose exploits are being closely monitored by the global badminton community with an eye to locate a way of halting his all-conquering march he faces a challenging quarter-final with China’s No 4 seed Shi Yuqi whom he displaced from the fourth rung of the BWF ladder in the latest rankings The 21-year-old Chinese player beat Frenchman Brice Leverdez in a canter at 21-15 21-10 on Thursday In one of the biggest shock results of the day another exciting 21-year-old Anders Antonsen of Denmark gave a glimpse of his burgeoning talent by knocking out the 2016 Rio Olympics gold medallist and two-time former world champion Chen Long of China at 15-21 21-16 21-16 in the day’s longest match lasting 79 minutes Chen’s female counterpart Spaniard Carolina Marin who had also bagged the 2014 and 2015 world titles and the 2016 Olympic gold medal was shown the exit door by South Korea’s Lee Jang Mi at 21-18 21-19 in 52 minutes The left-handed Spanish ace who had shown a return to form by winning the Japan Open Superseries once again finds herself in the wilderness with successive early tournament defeats on the European circuit at the hands of Saina Nehwal and Lee Of the two Indian doubles combinations left in the fray after the initial exchanges on Wednesday the women’s doubles pairing of Ashwini Ponnappa and N Sikki Reddy who had beaten an English duo on the opening day of the French Open came a cropper against the powerful top-seeded Japanese twosome of Ayaka Takahashi and Misaki Matsutomo at 21-16 21-14 The Indians were unable to make any impression on the water-tight defence of the World No 1 pair But there was a most encouraging result for the youthful men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty who achieved what was arguably the best result of their fledgling career as a unit The Indians lowered the colours of the World’s No 6 ranked men’s team of Mads Pieler Kolding and Mads-Conrad Pedersen at 22-20 12-21 21-19 Despite being swept off their feet in the middle game Rankireddy and Shetty maintained their cool in the first and third games to win the points that mattered in the ultimate analysis The Indians’ reward was a quarter-final meeting on Friday with the world’s top ranked combination of Denmark’s Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen who would be looking to shrug off their shock exit at the same last-eight stage of their home tournament last week and to go all the way in this one Written by Syed Khalique Ahmed | Ahmedabad | Published: May 3 2012 5:10 am Related News The cotton acreage in the state has doubled in the last News Doing well in life it seems is not as difficult as we tend to assume when life throws a few tough challenges at us A new study has found that what it takes to thrive rather than merely survive could be as simple as feeling good about life and yourself and being good at something Until now and despite plenty of theories there has been no agreement on what makes a person thrive or on how people can try and ensure they do To come up with a definitive catch-all the researchers pulled together research on what makes people thrive from studies of babies and teenagers to studies of artists sportspeople employees and the elderly “Thriving is a word most people would be glad to hear themselves described as but which science hasn’t really managed to consistently classify and describe until now” said Daniel Brown a sport and exercise scientist at the University of Portsmouth in Britain “It appears to come down to an individual experiencing a sense of development of getting better at something and succeeding at mastering something” he added “In the simplest terms what underpins it is feeling good about life and yourself and being good at something” Brown added The study published in the journal European Psychologist outlines a ‘shopping list’ of requirements for thriving in life According to the list one has to be optimistic spiritual or religious motivated proactive someone who enjoys learning and is flexible adaptable socially competent believes in self/has self-esteem Moreover one should also have the opportunity and employer/family/other support The other requirements in the list include challenges and difficulties are at manageable level environment is calm is given a high degree of autonomy and is trusted as competent To thrive does not need all the components but a combination of some from each of the two lists may help the researchers said Thriving has been examined at various stages of human life and has at times been described as vitality learning mental toughness focus or combinations of these and other qualities It has also been examined in various contexts including in the military in health and in child development “Since the end of the 20th century there has been a quest in science to better understand human fulfilment and thriving there’s been a shift towards wanting to understand how humans can function as highly as possible” Brown said “Part of the reason for a lack of consensus is the research so far has been narrowly focused Some have studied what makes babies thrive others have examined what makes some employees thrive and others not and so on By setting out a clear definition I hope this helps set a course for future research” Brown added For all the latest Lifestyle News download Indian Express App More Related Three persons were arrested in connection with the case on May 15 — Goutam Roy (52) Mohammed Nasrul (28) and Mohammed Sabbir Alam (30) CID had said that Nasrul and Alam are from Munger district in Bihar which is infamous for manufacturing of illegal weapons ADG (CID) Rajesh Kumar said: “We have got some leads Our team will leave for Munger tomorrow to arrest a few more” Officials said during interrogation the accused had revealed details on how Munger caters to Bengal’s demands for arms “Some more names have come up We need to arrest them before we expose the entire gang that is operating from Munger to Bengal” said an official The CID has allegedly found that the Rabindra Nagar factory — from where 38 semi-finished pistols and some arms-making equipment were recovered — was operating for the last three to four months “The pistols assembled at the factory was sold for about Rs 10000 to Rs 20000 Mohammed Nasrul and Mohammed Sabbir Alam have revealed some big names connected to the operating from Munger to Bengal especially in areas like Rabindra Nagar Maheshtala and Metiabruz” the official added “This gang would usually supply arms to South-24 Parganas Nadia Malda and other border areas across Bengal The members mainly assembled the weapons and supplied the same to the market For making arms they used cheap parts which they would get from Munger…” he said Last year in Three of them were from Munger Following the incident police had busted similar arms-making factories twice in the area last year “Rabindra Nagar has become a ‘mini Munger’ It is a minority dominated Trumpji learnt from Modiji only Related News When Narendra Modi gave the slogan “India first’’ the most excited support for it came from non-resident Indians particularly NRIs living in America The Hindutva NRI’s ardent “Indian nationalism” not nationalism of the nation where they are living either as citizens or as green card-holders is well known Now they should be very happy that Modiji has taught Donald Trumpji — the presidential candidate of the grand old American Republican Party a slogan of his election campaign For the first time in history an American leader has learnt from an Indian leader how to encapsulate a nationalist slogan — “America first” Should not we — and more so the Modiites in America — be happy about this development One of the key elements of the Hindutva NRI’s nationalism is opposition to liberalism (which they call left-liberalism) They hate the idea of pure “left” more than they hate the idea of pure “liberal” as “leftism’’ (meaning Marxism) asks for equal work and equal wage for all able-bodied people of a nation The Hindutva NRIs think they are more equal than the American blacks and Hispanics They also assume that leftism opposes migration and double citizenship whereas “rightism” (meaning Modi-ism) gives that right without any ambivalence Modiji promised double citizenship and the American NRIs would get it Perhaps Trumpji would ask them to go back Interestingly while Bernie Sanders was challenging the liberal Hillary Clinton from the left the Hindutva NRIs were quick to jump into the campaign trail of liberal Hillary If we go by their ideological prescription for India which includes the grand idea of “India first” they should be staunch supporters of Trump’s “America first” Why then do they hate the right wing Trumpji After all he is as much of a bigot-nationalist as Modiji Share This Article Related Article Modiji’s “India first” slogan was given keeping the Indian Muslims and Christians in mind The unstated idea was that for Muslims and Christians India is not first For Muslims “Pakistan is first” for Christians “Vatican is first’’ Though Trump also hates Muslims he has in mind the Indians and Chinese living in America who do not believe in America first Trump believes that Indians should go to India and Chinese should go to China and keep shouting “India first” and “China first” If Modiji wants to build a fence on the Pakistan border Trumpji wants to build a big business wall around the whole of America Even this wall business Trumpji learnt from Modiji only For the first time our PM is giving creative ideas to American presidential candidates also Should we not celebrate such an “idea” export enterprise Some of us left-liberals do not have enough brains to appreciate Modiji here and Trumpji there Should not Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji and Ramdevji go there to enlist support for the Indian brainchild in America and ask the NRIs to support him Some great NRI researchers living in America working around the Hindu American Foundation found out (in a book called Breaking India) that several Christian and Muslim organisations and their friends living in India are conspiring to “break India” into four nations (curiously called Dalitistan Islamistan Christianistan and Hindustan) Assume that Trump and Republican Christians think that the Hindu American Foundation is conspiring to break America and to inject idolatry and polytheism into their Christian monotheist fatherland Would they be wrong It is a known fact that the Republicans are as conservative anti-idolatry Christians as the BJP wallahs are ardent idol worshippers If the Hindutva NRIs love their motherland while living in the American fatherland why can’t Americans love their own fatherland while doing big business with the Indian motherland News is trickling down that the Hindutva NRIs are worried about the possibility of Trump winning the election These are the ones who wrote thousands of abusive social media messages on facebook and twitter against whosoever has argued that nationalist jingoism of the Hindutva type is actually anti-national It needed a quick American learner like Trump to make them realise that if he wins the election India would have more re-migrated un-employees Let us not think that the Chinese will be sitting ducks as the great Hindutva Indians are The Trump Wall cannot stop the builders of the Great Wall China knows how to handle a hundred Trumps but the maverick Trump can make his Hindutva friends dance India is still dependent on America for many things If a third world country like India could think that through Hindutva ideology it can bend America to support India against Pakistan they are mistaken The Hindutva NRIs were happy with the Indian cow slaughter ban while enjoying the meat and milk of American cows They were also very happy that the Hindutva rulers believe in the demolition of mosques and building of mandirs in their place But by learning from the same Hindutva ideology if the Trump forces demolish Hindu temples in America and build churches what will the Hindutva wallas do That is the reason why in a globalised world it is better to work around liberal democratic values which do not accept the demolition of other cultures and promotion of jingoist cultures Hardly anybody imagined that a man of Trump’s bigotry could win the Republican primaries The Hindutva forces must realise that they too are a minority in many countries If the Hindutva forces could say that those who eat beef must go to Pakistan the Trumpites can say that pure vegetarians should go to India Migrants who live in other countries should not enthusiastically support communal jingoistic politics back home Americans might not allow the Trump kind of “America first” to come to power because they cannot imperil their democracy and liberal values Without realising what would be in store Indian voters elected Modi to power and now all democratic institutions are under stress The people’s food culture higher educational institutions pro-people welfare schemes are in crisis If the Hindutva Indian Americans are honest they must rally round Trump But we know that they are terrified by Trump’s neo-Nazi nationalism We hope that at least they would realise that the Indian minorities are also human beings like them with a desire to live in peace The writer is director himself Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal likes to present himself as a modest man but the annual advertising budget for his government went up from Rs 22 crore during Sheila Dikshit’s tenure to Rs 526 crore this year (March 2015 to March 2016) A large percentage of Delhi government advertisements are centred around projecting the Chief Minister whether it is 12 repetitions an hour on popular radio stations or six slots an hour on prime-time TV Even the publicity concerning the odd-even scheme was centred around Kejriwal’s image Colourful example Some commentators on Indian television belittled the various tableaux in the Republic Day parade for being repetitive and amateurish They felt the parade should stick to the marching bands But the parade’s chief guest French President Francois Hollande was more impressed by the floats camels and dancers than the marching columns He said he had spoken to his defence minister to introduce some of the colour of the Indian Republic Day to the French parade on Bastille Day Private lunch In what was seen as a departure from protocol Francois Hollande was hosted for lunch after the Republic Day parade by a leading Indian businessman Associated Journals Limited is keen to re-start the National Herald newspaper A meeting was called to discuss whether to re-launch the paper from Lucknow or Delhi It was pointed out that while there already looking for an editor with the right secular liberal credentials but an added pre-condition is that the journalist should be a teetotaller Aspiring candidates feel that the teetotaller requirement is an unreasonable demand since most journalists are fond of their tipple Also the party constitution does not forbid alcohol it merely recommends that its members should refrain from drinking No ghost writer Salman Khurshid presented Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi a copy of his recently released book The Other Side of the Mountain a defence of the Manmohan Singh government Impressed with the tone Rahul asked him whether Khurshid wrote the book all by himself Khurshid was taken aback since as an Oxford-educated lawyer and established author he was hardly likely to need Related News One would have thought that thehome minister of India had more important things to attend to than to concern himself with a student demonstration on a university campus However he found the timeto take a personal interest in the matter and forestalling the response of the university administration itself and ignoring old-fashioned considerations such as institutional autonomy weighed in with all his might He sounded sombre almost Churchillian on the eve of the Battle of Britain — “We will fight them on the beaches…” The police commissioner of Delhi took time out from other important business such as harassing the AAP government and sent in his cops to arrest the president of the JNU students’ union for a somewhat obscure offence — chanting “anti-national slogans” though apparently he was merely present when “anti-national slogans” whatever they be were being shouted by some disaffected Kashmiris who heaven knows have sufficient cause to be pretty disaffected The slogan-shouters are to be charged with “sedition” no less The foundations of the Indian state are endangered by the raised voices of a few Kashmiris — in Delhi (Parleying with the PDP in Srinagar is another matter) Earlier recipients of the charge of sedition not excluding a certain Gandhi might well feel slighted in retrospect — but with inflation all around one can hardly expect the prosecutors to lag far behind All this would be farcical — suitable material for a light Gilbert-and-Sullivan operetta — if it were not ominous The design is pretty obvious A flexible combination of street violence (the ABVP Bajrang Dal etc) certain provisions of the penal code (Sections 153 295 etc) and a compliant police administration is deployed in order to silence all expression of dissent and to destroy the institutional locations where critical ideas may be aired — and maybe even shouted Between easily hurt “sentiments” and the ever-present threat of public disorder which can be produced on demand and the ease with which all manifestations even of scepticism let alone dissent are being dubbed “anti-national” — still was hanging Afzal Guru in order to satisfy the justifiably outraged collective consciousness really right your honour — the brief pre-election “debate” about imminent fascism appears well nave Somewhat surprisingly the semi-literate but still honourable human resource development minister — how “semi-” is a matter of some uncertainty — has even yoked her Saraswati to the cause of her “nationalism” (Mine is still playing the veena) But perhaps it is time to reframe KC Bhattacharya’s famous question: “Is there an Indian way of fascism” It is time that the home ministry published a list of all the things that must not be said or seen — or apparently even heard like “anti-national” slogans The most sacred is of course the sacred cow But almost nearly as sacred is Prime Minister Narendra Modi — because one gathers that being critical of him was the “offence” of the boys of the Periyar Study Circle at IIT Madras Rohith Vemula’s “offence” has been rather obscured by the pious platitudes prompted by his suicide but it must have been pretty dire for a Union minister to have declared him “anti-national” and hounded him via the compliant administration to his heart-breaking end I need guidance hon’ble minister I understand that one mustn’t see — or even try to see — Muzaffarnagar Baqi Hai but may one at least say that one mustn’t see it Likewise anything by Anand Patwardhan and anything to do with Kashmir as the innocents at IIT Delhi discovered How about the Northeast Is it alright to say that Afspa is not wildly popular in Manipur The alarming and exponential reach of the “anti-national” can find you out in the most unexpected places I realise that this “design” — plot strategy — is not always apparent in the metropolis But I was unreassured by Swapan Dasgupta’s remark at the Kolkata Lit Fest that barring a few “regrettable” incidents — like the murder of Akhlaq — there was no real climate of “intolerance” — that is hysteria about hunting the “anti-national” — being built up in the country Unfortunately I was present at the Allahabad University campus when Siddharth Varadarajan made his visit to call on the vice chancellor and thank him for his invitation later withdrawn under pressure from the ABVP Not inside where Varadarajan was being held hostage but outside where the outraged “nationalists” the hostage-takers were swarming I obviously don’t look right because I was also attacked despite my advanced years — attacked verbally I must add and accused of having ruined the country for five thousand years (I am not quite that old) — and being told angrily that the uncouth “nationalist” would not allow me and my kind to do so anymore Very reassuring Satish Deshpande has written urgently about “The Death of the public university” (The Indian Express February 1) The public university accessible to all — unlike the private enclaves of the elite where people who have plenty of money learn how to make even more money — is a necessary institution in a society that is in the throes of a deep social transformation It is the necessary place where the ideas thrown up in the process — often contentious often wrong — are articulated and examined: Caste gender sexualities even fascism Deprived of such a public arena these ideas will migrate go underground mutate That honourable ministers is truly dangerous We can’t all only be doing “Saraswati Vandana” all the time — the goddess demands other sterner forms of worship too: At the very least a certain minimal commitment to ideas rather than the pathological fear of ideas manifested by the “nationalists” I have only one disagreement with Deshpande — that not complete yet The verdict of the Justice Lodha Committee imposing lifetime ban on Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals officials Gurunath Meiyappan and Raj Kundra respectively and suspending these two Indian Premier League (IPL) teams for two years has brought him satisfaction He is the one who took the powerful former BCCI president N Srinivasan head-on when others were happy to play along with the wily man from Chennai However Verma doesn’t want to be called a whistleblower He is an ardent devotee of cricket and he says that descriptor is good enough for him Aditya Verma Image courtesy: Naresh Sharma/Firstpost “I’m just the secretary of the Cricket Association of Bihar and my fight was against the BCCI to get full-member status for my state in the BCCI Bihar is the third largest state and it has been participating in Ranji Trophy matches and produced good players But our boys are unable to participate in the IPL Taking advantage of being an autonomous body the BCCI prevented smaller states from participating in these matches The smaller states don’t get the opportunity that bigger states like Maharashtra Delhi Tamil Nadu etc get Now the Supreme Court has made it clear that BCCI is a public body Srinivasan has brought a bad name to the BCCI I always wanted that the truth behind this IPL betting episode should become public and the accused should be punished” Verma told Firstpost The Lodha committee verdict is the latest step in the case that began with Verma filing a case in the Bombay High Court claiming that the BCCI’s investigation that completely cleared Meiyappan and Kundra in the IPL betting case was a sham While the High Court stopped short of saying the investigation was a cover-up it struck the investigation down on the grounds it violated the BCCI’s own rules The board had the option of instituting a fresh probe but instead chose to appeal the verdict in the Supreme Court which then set up the Justice Mudgal panel to investigate the allegations Subsequently the Lodha Committee was set up which gave its verdict on 14 July “Srinivasan used every means to shield his son-in-law Meiyappan He has no morality Now the BCCI has to come up clean as it’s accountable to the nation and the game of cricket If the BCCI wants to redeem its lost reputation and for the sake of credibility of cricket the present board management must call back Srinivasan and file criminal charges of fraud and forgery against him and those others involved in the corruption Nobody no institution is above law” he said Originally from Chapra district of Bihar Verma 52 inherited his passion for cricket from his father who was a businessman and an avid cricket lover He represented his college and was the only player from his district to have represented Bihar University in the All-India Universities meet To promote cricket he had organized tournaments in Chapra and later moved to Jamshedpur to work and play for the Tatas Verma’s journey to get recognition for his state began in 2007-08 when he used to frequently visit Mumbai and meet BCCI officials Often to be shooed away According to a close associate of Verma “He got immense help and support from senior Congress leader Subodh Kant Sahay and with his help Verma got a battery of top lawyers of this country to fight for justice” Verma added “There is another important task that needs to be done Mudgal Committee submitted a sealed envelope (with 13 names) to the Supreme Court These are the names of the tainted people (including players) associated with cricket betting These should come in public domain Present BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya should ensure legal action against the accused because at one point of time due to this corruption he was about to get jailed If the BCCI fails to take on the culprits I’ll again move court My fight against the corruption in cricket isn’t over; it’s a long fight As the apex court and Justice RM Lodha said we have to ensure that the gentleman’s game is back to its purity and glory” Karachi: Pakistan’s former cricket captain Imran Khan does not expect tainted left-arm pacer Mohammad Amirto get a hostile
