Meanwhile, sports advertisements were found to be much more dominant online, with their exposure furthered through sponsorships used within broadcasts of live events.Marc Etches, CEO of GambleAware, commented: “This is an interim report, and as such it is too early to judge the impact of exposure to gambling advertising and marketing on children, young people and vulnerable adults. “Nevertheless, the research does make important recommendations, including the need for clearer and more regular messages on gambling adverts of the risks associated with gambling, and the need to strengthen age verification processes on social media platforms.”The research confirmed that no examples of gambling adverts were placed within children’s media, including the most popular children’s websites. Researchers did find, however, that there was an array of content that contained features which might plausibly appeal directly to children and young people, including celebrity endorsement, memorable songs and catchphrases. Ian Angus from the Gambling Commission added: “We welcome the publication of this interim report which contributes towards the delivery of the recently launched National Strategy to Reduce Gambling Harms. “This research takes a significant step to address gaps in understanding of this issue and provides a clearer picture of the volume, tone and content of gambling advertising and sponsorship in Great Britain, and the extent to which children, young people and vulnerable adults are exposed to it.“We await the findings of the second phase report with interest. In the meantime, we are pleased to see that the report identifies clear areas for action that gambling firms can take now and we therefore expect them to redouble their efforts to address public concerns about the volume and nature of gambling advertising and sports sponsorship.”59 per cent of eSports gambling content found via Twitter was deemed as potentially appealing to children and young people, mostly attributed to the animated graphics used, in comparison to the11 per cent of gambling adverts found in the mainstream media. While the research is still ongoing, current figures suggest that young people are still exposed to online gambling adverts, with young people still able to follow and engage with betting-related accounts on Twitter. GambleAware has expressed that these findings emphasise the room to utilise existing technology which would effectively manage the content that young people and children can access.Steven Ginnis, Research Director at Ipsos MORI has said: “The research identifies the multiple touchpoints through which children, young people and vulnerable adults come in to contact with gambling marketing and advertising. This stretches from the high street to the lounge and isn’t just restricted to sports. “The impact of this exposure will be fully explored in our second report. Participants in the research also spoke of a wide range of themes and features that they find appealing in gambling advertising; these features are more commonplace than the use of child-friendly images or phrases, for example the use of celebrities or the use of financial offers. “This requires a more nuanced discussion of how best to mitigate against the risks of exposure, appeal and susceptibility to gambling advertising among these groups.”In the research, it was identified that participants felt there was little evidence of prominent consumer protection messages – such as age warnings or promotion of lower-risk gambling. Meanwhile, 22 per cent of mainstream media adverts were judged to contain features such as implied limited risk or inflated chances of winning; which subsequently rose to 37 per cent on Twitter. The final stages of research, which will be published later this year, the focus will shift towards the overall impact of gambling marketing and advertising strategies. Will the National Register of Citizens (NRC) end 40 years of a “constant state of anxiety” for people on either side of the indigenous-immigrant divide in Assam? This is one of several “uncomfortable questions” an Assamese film being made intends to ask while batting for co-existence despite political and religious differences.Filmmaker Shankar Borua had befriended a Bengal-origin Muslim school teacher while filming for his documentary Beleaguered on a river island in western Assam five years ago. The focus of the documentary was why Surjya Tejor Anya Naam (Sun is Another Name of Blood), the first film on the political insurgency in Assam was made.Produced by Mrinal Kumar Saikia, now a Bharatiya Janata Party MLA, that feature film was on the armed revolution by the United Liberation Front of Asom and its genesis in a perceived policy of exploitation through settling immigrants. “My new film starts from where Beleaguered ended with a so-called Miya writer, who happens to be a lower primary school teacher on an erosion-prone river island inhabited by poor people, saying he speaks, writes and dreams in Assamese,” Mr. Borua told The Hindu. The film, expected to be completed by January next year, is tentatively titled Beleaguered. But Mr Borua intends to have a ‘Miya’ word added that “might raise eyebrows”.The teacher-writer who Mr. Borua met five years ago is the protagonist of his new project. The teacher’s life has been envisaged as that of members of his community referred to with pejoratives such as ‘Miya’, ‘Bangladeshi’, ‘na-Asomiya’ (new Assamese), and ‘Chorua’ (dweller of char, or sandbar/river island). “Our film has real-life characters playing their parts. It is actually a film within a film; an entire unit goes to this sandbar to make a documentary that was thought to have been some wildlife project. Some members of the unit, inherently dismissive of immigrants, get into trouble,” Mr. Borua said. The unit, a mix of liberal and radical people, is attacked by “both the Miyas (Muslims) and Asomiyas (Assamese)”. The Muslim teacher and his friends get attacked too, but the director stands his ground to complete the film because of his friendship with the former.“The film is directly linked with the NRC that was expected to be the finishing line for an issue that has dogged Assam for 40 years but has put a question mark on the future of a category of people. The issue resonates through other layers across the narrative,” Mr. Borua said. Assam, he said, has the most Muslims after Kashmir.

Celebrated songs such as “Trail in Life”, “Another Man’s Gold”, “Bounty”, have gone on to place Brody in a unique category all his own, rising beyond the conventional tracks that can be heard on mainstream radio in lyrical composition, and yet still retaining conventional success, with Brody recently landing his 22nd Top 10 hit at country radio, with “Good Goodbye.” His ballad “Time” released in 2016, laments on the passing of time, becoming especially poignant in a social media era with less one-on-one interaction with loved ones, earned critical acclaim and a great deal of recognition, showcasing Brody’s unique ability to make people think about their actions through his lyrics. New York – A residential building in Manhattan exploded and collapsed on Wednesday, killing at least one person and injuring 17 others as a serious fire engulfed the area in thick smoke, officials said. The explosion struck a building at 116th Street and Park Avenue in the East Harlem neighborhood of New York, where witnesses said they were jolted awake by what sounded like an earthquake.Mainline train services in and out of Grand Central terminal were suspended as a result of the incident next to its tracks. Hundreds of police and firefighters were on site with emergency service vans and fire trucks, as a dense white column of smoke spewed into the sky next to the Metro-North railway line, an AFP reporter said.A spokesman for energy company Con Edison told local TV channel NY 1 that it got a call from the building alerting them to a possible gas leak at 9:13 am, shortly before the blast.Local residents also spoke of smelling gas in the area. But Con Edison stopped short of confirming that the explosion had been caused by a gas leak.“Obviously what we see is something that would be consistent (with a gas leak) but we can’t say at this point what caused (the explosion),” the spokesman told NY1.“It was an explosion and a building collapsed,” a spokesman for New York Police Department told AFP. Scores of firefighters were dispatched to the scene.Police told AFP one person was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital and that 17 other people had been injured.“The call came at 9:34 am (1334 GMT). It is a residential building. The New York Fire Department is in the process of extinguishing the fire,” another police spokesman added. The New York Fire Department told AFP that more than 168 fire fighters and 44 different units had responded to the explosion.Witness Robert Santiago told CBS that he was sleeping when all of a suddenly the explosion shook his bed and the floor.“It smells very bad out here. It smells like rubble,” he said.“I thought the world was coming to an end, an earthquake or something like that. Terrible,” he added.Another witness told CBS that “a lot of people” lived in the six-storey building, including one of her friends.“I’m scared, I’m scared. I came out to see the situation,” she told the channel from behind the security cordon at the scene.“I’m very scared. I’m shaking. I’m asthmatic and I’m not supposed to be here. I just came,” she added.Another witness who lived across the street told the channel that his relatives living further way also felt the blast.“I saw a lady running with no shoes on. It was crazy. It was like a war zone,” he said.“First of all I thought it was an earthquake. I got calls from my family who felt it too and that was all the way up town. Man, it was crazy,” he added. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority said Metro-North trains had been suspended indefinitely in and out of Grand Central because of the building explosion and collapse.“Southbound trains are being held at stations to await further instructions. Northbound trains are being held in Grand Central,” said an emergency notice published on its website.
29C. KeenumDEN81.256.2 In the original conception of passer rating, an average rating was about 67. In 2018, only one qualified passer (Arizona Cardinals rookie Josh Rosen) fell below that threshold, and even then just barely (his rating was 66.7). But what if the standards for what makes a good or bad performance had evolved as leaguewide numbers changed? Pro-Football-Reference.com does a great job of adjusting for era with its Advanced Passing indices, which are centered on an average of 100 with 15 points representing 1 standard deviation in either direction. But I wanted to rescale the building blocks of passer rating itself to see how today’s passing numbers would translate to a rating if the NFL had simply allowed its rating system to change with the times. To do that, I looked at the distribution of stats in each category that goes into passer rating — completion percentage, yards per attempt, touchdown percentage and interception rate — from the sample originally used to craft the formula back in the early 1970s (qualified passers from 1960 to 1970). Specifically, I figured out the spread of values (relative to the league) that, in a given category, led to the minimum number of points (0), the average number of points (1) and the maximum (2.375). Under the hood, passer rating is built around these ranges; it hands out points on that 0-to-2.375 scale in each category, then sums up the four values, divides by 6 and multiplies by 100. (Hence, 67 is supposed to be average — a 1.0 in four categories, divided by 6, times 100.)For any era, we can rescale what performance “should” lead to a given value in each category to keep the relative leaguewide distribution the same as it was when passer rating was first conceived.2Just like with PFR’s advanced passing stats, I calculated these distributions using qualified passers in rolling three-season periods to avoid a strange spread in one season causing overly volatile results. (To qualify, a passer needed at least 14 attempts per team game.) So while, say, Alex Smith’s 62.5 percent completion rate in 2018 was worth 1.0 point, so was Don Meredith’s 49.5 percent mark from 1962. Do this for every category in every season, and you have a stabilized version of passer rating that no longer spirals uncontrollably upward with each innovation in the passing game. Some ultra-high ratings change less than you might expect under this new method. Rodgers’s single-season record of 122.5 from 2011 tumbles all the way down to … 121.1. (He was very good that year.) But other seemingly immortal ratings, such as Kirk Cousins’s 99.7 mark this season, get knocked down quite a bit — in Cousins’s case, he falls to a much more reasonable 81.5 rating. (Anyone who watched a Vikings game this year would surely argue that this is more appropriate.) Similarly, Ryan Fitzpatrick’s 100.4 mark this season — yes, that is real, look it up — gets heavily penalized in the interception category (his 4.9 percent INT rate was more than double the league average), taking him down to an adjusted rating of 77.4.Moving further down the list, Joe Flacco’s decent-sounding 84.2 classic rating properly falls to a mediocre 62.8 after our adjustment, while the 30.7 rating of WOAT candidate Nathan Peterman becomes an 11.6 — perilously close to the minimum possible rating of 0.0. (If Peterman had thrown enough passes to qualify, that 11.6 rating would have “surpassed” Ryan Leaf’s 19.1 from 1998 as the lowest-rated season since 1950.)All told, the new ratings are once again grounded in a world where an average quarterback scores about 70 — not exactly 67 because the rolling distribution includes multiple seasons for comparison3Causing 2018 performances to score slightly higher on average, since this year was a better passing season than 2017. — and as a result, the numbers make far more intuitive sense at a glance than the ludicrously inflated official ratings of 2018: 20B. BreesNO115.7103.3 According to the NFL’s official passer rating system, the most efficient quarterback in NFL history is Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers, with a lifetime mark of 103.1.1Pro football’s passer rating has a possible range from 0 to 158.3. That makes sense: Rodgers is generally regarded as one of the greatest QBs to ever play the game. But if you scroll further down the list, the results become much harder to explain. In the world of passer rating, Kirk Cousins is better than Joe Montana; Derek Carr and Matt Schaub top Dan Marino; and, after one season, Broadway Sam Darnold is running circles around Broadway Joe Namath.Passer rating is often criticized as Byzantine (have you seen that formula?), incomplete (it does not include data on rushing plays or sacks) and arbitrary (again, have you looked at the formula?). Yet its biggest shortcoming might be the way it is unmoored from changes in the game itself. Passing has never been more efficient than it was this season, in which the league’s average QB posted a rating of 92.9. Unitas197378.378.9 According to the NFL’s official system, there have been 93 qualified quarterback seasons since 1950 with a passer rating of at least 100.0, and nine of those happened in 2018 alone. After our adjustment, though, there have been only 46 such seasons since 1950,4Four QB seasons cracked the 100.0 mark under the new system but didn’t under the classic passer rating. and only one of those happened this year — the 103.3 mark Drew Brees put up with the Saints. It’s still a golden age for passing, as nearly half of those 46 seasons have happened since 2000, but we’ve also filtered out 51 “false 100s” — seasons that cracked 100.0 on the old scale but not the new one — of which 47 have happened since 2000.The result of our passer rating adjustment is a much more reasonable career leaderboard that features qualified quarterbacks from a variety of different eras: The biggest beneficiaries of our changes are 1950s-era passers like Otto Graham, who originally rated in the 70s (discarding his eye-popping pre-1950 numbers, which were compiled in the upstart All-America Football Conference) but leaps up into the mid-80s after judging him in comparison with his peers. San Francisco 49ers legend Steve Young also gets a boost relative to other great QBs from history, reclaiming the No. 1 slot that he’d held in real life before Rodgers and friends came along. At the other end of the spectrum, nobody loses more points of career rating than Blake Bortles, who somehow has an 80.6 mark under the classic system but falls to 55.2 with our adjustments. But passer rating itself has always been a surprisingly decent metric within any self-contained era; the team with the higher passer rating (by any margin) in a game wins about 80 percent of the time. It’s the comparisons across eras that have become distorted as the game has changed over time. But a simple fix tethering modern stats to the standards contained in passer rating’s formula would go a long way toward restoring sanity to the metric you still see in every NFL box score and broadcast. The Blake Bortleses of the world might not like seeing their shiny 80-something ratings get dumped into the 50s, but it’s a change whose time has come.Check out our latest NFL predictions.
With a national TV audience, intensive medical examinations and the unfamiliarity of being on the road, the NFL Scouting Combine can be a nerve-racking experience. That’s why Ohio State’s Pro Day on Friday was such a welcomed relief for former Buckeyes looking to break into the pro ranks and hear their names called at the NFL Draft during the last weekend of April. “I think it’s a lot better. You’re in the place you’ve been training for your whole career, so I think it puts you a little more at ease,” offensive lineman Justin Boren said. “Combine — all the cameras, so many people — it’s nice working out here.” The pre-draft process is an arduous one of being constantly evaluated in nearly every way imaginable, from on-field positional drills to personal interviews that gauge players’ personalities and character. A school’s Pro Day represents the end to the constant needling of prospects until NFL teams invite players to their facilities to have private workouts just prior to the draft. Wide receiver Dane Sanzenbacher expressed relief that the Combine and his Pro Day were over and likened the process to something everyone looking for a job has to go through after college. “It’s a big job interview,” he said. “Not many of them are fun but they’re necessary evils, but it’s to get to do what you really want to do.” Sanzenbacher was one of the big winners of Pro Day, reducing his time in the 40-yard dash to 4.48 seconds on Friday from 4.59 at the Combine. “You haven’t been poked and prodded by doctors for three days so I mean, it felt good. It felt better,” he said. Sanzenbacher said he has no idea where he will get drafted come late April. He said teams will likely question his slight build, but he proved a lot by running a sub-4.5 40-yard dash. He hopes that his solid career and game film at OSU will be enough for scouts to form a solid impression of the Buckeyes’ 2010 MVP. Buckeye coach Jim Tressel was in attendance and watched his former players participate in drills from afar. It was announced last Tuesday by the school that Tressel would be suspended for the first two games of next season for allegedly violating the school’s compliance policy and NCAA Bylaw 10.1 by not reporting e-mails he received last April from local attorney and former Buckeye Christopher Cicero, who indicated that Terrelle Pryor and DeVier Posey had sold OSU memorabilia to Eddie Rife, the owner of Fine Line Ink tattoo parlor. Other performances on Pro Day that helped players’ draft stock came from linebackers Ross Homan and Brian Rolle, defensive lineman Dexter Larimore, Boren, defensive backs Devon Torrence and Jermale Hines and running back Brandon Saine. Homan improved his time in the 40 to 4.6 seconds from 4.68 at the Combine, Torrence improved to 4.5 seconds from 4.68, Hines to 4.57 seconds from 4.68 and Saine to 4.4 seconds from 4.43. One of OSU’s most interesting draft prospects is Rolle, who is considered undersized for an NFL linebacker and might be asked to make a position change to safety. The four-year letterman has plenty of solid game film to go with his decorated career as middle linebacker for the Buckeyes. He won four Big Ten Player of the Week awards and was selected by coaches for the Randy Gradishar Award for outstanding linebacker. Weighing 230 pounds, 12 pounds more than his playing weight his senior year, Rolle said he would play wherever he was needed and participated in position drills at both linebacker and, for the first time Friday, defensive back. “It’s not really hard because I’ve heard ‘You’re short’ my whole life. It is what it is. God wanted me to be 5-foot-9 and 7/8 for a reason,” Rolle said. “I’m not going to shy away from playing linebacker just because somebody says I can’t do it. I’m going to compete and work hard at what I’m good at. When a team looks at me as a safety, I’m willing to do it.” Despite being undersized by traditional standards, Rolle’s 4.51 in the 40 proves that he’s fast enough to be a safety. At the Combine, he put up 28 reps of 225 pounds. Only Homan (32) and Boston College’s Mark Herzlich (29) did more reps as linebackers. Rolle said the biggest difference between linebacker and defensive back is the pack pedal used to drop into coverage. He mentioned that linebackers at OSU would sometimes get into a “lazy backpedal,” but that his athleticism would show teams he’s more than capable of learning how to drop into coverage. In the NFL, many non-starters are asked to play special teams — an area that seemed to excite Rolle more than playing defense. “That’s the first thing they ask, ‘Are you willing to play special teams?’ I love special teams. I don’t feel like there’s nothing more (fun) to do,” he said. “It’s great to play defense, great to play offense. Special teams, you get to set the tone of games … or change the momentum of a game … that’s something that at the next level, I think can really help me out.” Homan is one of the most sure-fire picks in this year’s draft of the Buckeyes coming out. Both his 40 time of 4.6 and his performance in the bench press at the Combine ranked highly for his position. He’s added 13 pounds of muscle since the season ended and is up to 240 pounds. “They say they evaluate you on 90 percent of your game film and 10 percent of your combine, so I’m happy with that because I think my game film speaks for itself,” Homan said. Homan was a three-year starter, first-team All-Big Ten performer, Sports Illustrated honorable mention All-America and academic All-Big Ten. He amassed 287 tackles (17 for loss) in 54 games as a Buckeye. He also has the outstanding pedigree NFL executives associate with linebackers from OSU, something Homan attributes to his position coach. “Luke Fickell is one of the best coaches, I believe, in college football,” Homan said. Hines is another Buckeye in flux when it comes to a position at the next level. He played the “star” position at OSU, which is a hybrid of safety and linebacker. The four-year letterman with three career interceptions participated in drills for both defensive back and linebacker on Friday. Aside from improving his 40 time to 4.57 seconds at his Pro Day from 4.68 at the Combine, Hines broad-jumped 9-feet 6-inches. He said he thought he played well at both safety positions as a Buckeye but only had one regret. “The only thing I wanted more of during my college career was people to take more shots at me … throw the ball at me more. … Every time I’m in the middle of the field it’s a slant or a curl or something like that,” Hines said. Larimore and offensive lineman Bryant Browning weren’t invited to the Combine, but were excited to workout for scouts for the first time since ending their college careers. For a defensive tackle, Larimore ran an impressive 4.97 in the 40 and bench pressed 225 pounds 32 times. Browning participated only in position drills because he said he tweaked his hamstring last week. He said he will participate with defensive lineman Cameron Heyward during Heyward’s personal Pro Day on March 30. Heyward injured his elbow in the Sugar Bowl win against Arkansas and subsequently needed Tommy John surgery to repair a tendon in his elbow. He was present at Pro Day, but didn’t work out. He’s been a regular at the team’s 6 a.m. workouts all last week and, prior to his injury, was considered a first-round pick. Defensive back Chimdi Chekwa ran a speedy 4.4 at the Combine and decided that was enough. All he did at the Pro Day was participate in positional drills. Former Buckeyes James Laurinaitis of the St. Louis Rams and Malcolm Jenkins of the New Orleans Saints were in attendance. Representatives for 29 of the NFL’s 32 teams were at OSU’s Pro Day — only the Washington Redskins, Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals did not have anyone in attendance.
With a 4-1 lead heading into the ninth, the No. 4 Ohio State baseball team looked poised to take down No. 1-seeded Illinois in the Big Ten Tournament, but a four-run outburst by the Fighting Illini ended that possibility Thursday night. “That’s by far the toughest loss that we’ve had all season,” senior outfielder Brian DeLucia said. “I don’t know if it’s going to hit quickly or if we are going to feel it tomorrow.” OSU (26-26, 13-11 Big Ten) had freshman pitcher and first baseman Josh Dezse try to close out the ninth against Illinois (26-25, 15-9 Big Ten). Dezse came into the game with six saves, but played a different role than usual, pitching the eighth and ninth innings. He pitched a scoreless eighth, but walked two and had runners in scoring position at one point. Coach Greg Beals kept him in for the ninth, and Dezse gave up a leadoff double and two RBI singles. He was taken out after giving up a walk with a pitch count of 55, well above a closer’s average. Junior reliever Andrew Armstrong came in with two outs to finish the game, but gave up the walk-off RBI single on his very first pitch. Beals said he asked a lot out of Dezse in the game but that, win or lose, he likes to have Dezse on the mound. “Obviously, in retrospect, when you look back, we asked him to do something he hasn’t done yet this year,” Beals said. “As a coach, as a competitor, you want to put your players in the best opportunity possible, and we thought we were. As you look back at it, maybe we should have gone with the bullpen like we’ve done all year long in that eighth inning.” After Illinois scored its only run off starter Brett McKinney in the bottom of the third, it was DeLucia who responded with a leadoff home run in the fourth to tie the game, 1-1. Both starters went deep into the game. McKinney pitched six innings and gave up one run, while Illinois starter Kevin Johnson went eight and gave up four. Illinois coach Dan Hartleb said McKinney pitched well and that OSU threw some pitches that made his hitters look bad. “Ohio State’s a very good team,” Hartleb said. “We’re very fortunate getting down like that, to come back and beat a good team.” Johnson’s last three runs came in the eighth when the Buckeyes made their push. On Wednesday, OSU scored five runs in the eighth to beat Minnesota, fueled by a leadoff bunt single by sophomore catcher Greg Solomon. Same inning, different game and with a man on second, Solomon lined a ball to center that the Illinois outfield missed, allowing him to complete a two-run inside-the-park home run. Tim Wetzel later provided a two-out RBI single to increase the lead to 4-1 before Illinois made its comeback. “You never think you’ve got the game secure, but I certainly liked where we were at, at that time,” Beals said. “Our guys kept grinding to get us that fourth run, and, as you see, every run’s very valuable.” With the loss to Illinois, the Buckeyes move to the losers’ bracket, in which they will play Minnesota again in an elimination game at 12:05 p.m. Minnesota rematch This will be the fifth time in less than 10 days that OSU and Minnesota will meet. The Buckeyes won three of the first four. Both have a loss already, so the loser of the game will go home, while the winner will turn around and play Purdue. Freshman Greg Greve is the expected starter for the Buckeyes. “The first challenge is put this game behind and get ready for Minnesota,” Beals said. “Minnesota, you can bet, is going to be ready for us. We’ve been playing with them, and we’ve got them three of the four games we’ve played, so they’re going to be hungry for us.” Making the rounds DeLucia and Solomon had home runs in the game, marking the second time this season against Illinois that the Buckeyes have hit multiple home runs. OSU has hit just 19 home runs this year. Thursday’s home runs were DeLucia’s first and just Solomon’s second of the year. Cat scratch fever Assistant coach Mike Stafford visited the mound in the third to talk to McKinney after he gave up his only run of the day and hit an Illinois batter. Play was delayed more when a cat somehow found its way onto the field, making an appearance on the bullpen near the OSU dugout. Junior reliever Paul Geuy was able to chase the cat under the tarp and out of play. The extra break seemed to help relax McKinney, as he allowed just three more hits through his last three innings.
Ohio State sophomore forward Jared Sullinger was named one of 15 finalists for the John R. Wooden Award Tuesday. The award, named after former UCLA basketball coach John Wooden, recognizes the top player in college basketball. Sullinger is the only player on the list who was a 2011 Wooden Award All American. He was also named first-team All-American by Sporting News for the second straight year. The Buckeye big man has averaged 17 points and 9 rebounds for the No. 7-ranked OSU basketball team this year as the team compiled a 25-6 regular season record. Sullinger’s 14 points and 10 rebounds helped OSU beat Michigan State, 72-70, Sunday and give the Buckeyes a share of the Big Ten regular season championship along with the Spartans and Michigan. MSU senior forward and Big Ten Player of the Year Draymond Green was the only other player from the Big Ten named a finalist for the Wooden Award. Other notable names include Kentucky freshmen forwards Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Kansas junior forward Thomas Robinson, and North Carolina senior forward Tyler Zeller. The list, which also requires the student-athletes to maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, was comprised of three freshmen, two sophomores, three juniors and seven seniors. The Big East had three players on the list, which was the most of any conference. The Wooden All-American teams will be announced during the week of the “Elite Eight” round of the NCAA Tournament. In the meantime, Sullinger and the Buckeyes will travel to Indianapolis for the Big Ten tournament. They will play Friday at approximately 9 p.m. against the winner of a game between Nebraska and Purdue. After the tournament ends Sunday, the team will learn its seeding in the NCAA Tournament.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is certain that his squad can repeat their feats for next seasonThe Catalan secured his first Premier League title on Sunday after Manchester United’s shock 1-0 defeat to West Brom confirmed City as the new champions. It marked what has truly been a dominant season at the Etihad Stadium with City having only lost two games all season and they are currently on the verge of breaking Chelsea’s points record of 95 points over the course of a single season, as well as their own record for most goals scored in a single season at 103.But Guardiola, whose side contain many young regular starters, is adamant that City have the potential to learn from their experiences from the past year and build on it for more glory in the future.“Sergio [Aguero] is a genius, a top player but about 30 years old but the others are 21, 22 so we won with guys that are so young,” said Guardiola, according to Manchester Evening News.“Playing in the Champions League at that age is sometimes complicated and maybe it’s a good lesson for them for the future and for next season.”While repeating the same feats that City have achieved this season will be difficult, Guardiola has refused to rule out the prospect.Report: City are stunned by Norwich George Patchias – September 14, 2019 Manchester City was stunned by Norwich City in todays Premier League clash.Much has been made in recent days of the potential impact of Aymeric…“We will have to try,” answered the 47 year-old when asked.“If you read what people said this week we have a lot to improve. You cannot deny that you are judged on results, okay that’s what it is, but you cannot deny we were good this season, we were good every single day.“To make 18 wins in a row you have to be mentally strong and they again [against Tottenham] showed me how strong they are and this is important to help build up this club a little bit higher.“Manchester City is not like United or Chelsea – the big clubs in England have trophies and a lot of history behind them.“Sometimes you have to do these sort of things to believe ‘wow, we are good too, like the others’.“The way we played helped us reach our target.“Of course next season it’s not going to happen the same, it’s impossible. It’s the target to say we were able to to that and if we are able to do it once then we are able to do it twice so we have to try to be constant next season.

– NEW WARNING FROM DOUG CASEY – READ IMMEDIATELY Over the years, Doug Casey’s forecasts have caused a lot of controversy… Like during the peak of the dot-com bubble when he warned a major crash in tech stocks was near… Or near 2008 when he warned America’s financial structure would be threatened with collapse. Critics called him “offensive,” “brash,” “irreverent.” But Doug was spot-on, every time. Not only that… Folks who heeded his warnings had the opportunity to make rare and extraordinary gains of 770%, 1,333%, and more. Yet, those could be a drop in the bucket if his latest controversial forecast about President Trump is right. Click here for the full story. Editor’s note: The “Greater Depression” has started… Yesterday, Casey Research founder Doug Casey compared what happened in the 1930s to what’s going on today. Below, he breaks down more of these likely differences… By Doug Casey, founder, Casey Research PRICES 1930s Prices dropped radically because billions of dollars of inflationary currency were wiped out through the stock market crash, bond defaults, and bank failures. The government, however, somehow equated the high prices of the inflationary ’20s with prosperity and attempted to prevent a fall in prices by such things as slaughtering livestock, dumping milk in the gutter, and enacting price supports. Since the collapse wiped out money faster than it could be created, the government felt the destruction of real wealth was a more effective way to raise prices. In other words, if you can’t increase the supply of money, decrease the supply of goods. Nonetheless, the 1930s depression was a deflationary collapse, a time when currency became worth more and prices dropped. This is probably the most confusing thing to most Americans since they assume—as a result of that experience—that “depression” means “deflation.” It’s also perhaps the biggest single difference between this depression and the last one. Today Prices could drop, as they did the last time, but the amount of power the government now has over the economy is far greater than what was the case 80 years ago. Instead of letting the economy cleanse itself by allowing the financial markets to collapse, governments will probably bail out insolvent banks, create mortgages wholesale to prop up real estate, and central banks will buy bonds to keep their prices from plummeting. All of these actions mean that the total money supply will grow enormously. Trillions will be created to avoid deflation. If you find men selling apples on street corners, it won’t be for 5 cents apiece, but $5 apiece. But there won’t be a lot of apple sellers because of welfare, nor will there be a lot of apples because of price controls. Consumer prices will probably skyrocket as a result, and the country will have an inflationary depression. Unlike the 1930s, when people who held dollars were king, by the end of the Greater Depression, people with dollars will be wiped out. THE SOCIETY 1930s The world was largely rural or small-town. Communications were slow, but people tended to trust the media. The government exercised considerable moral suasion, and people tended to support it. The business of the country was business, as Calvin Coolidge said, and men who created wealth were esteemed. All told, if you were going to have a depression, it was a rather stable environment for it; despite that, however, there were still plenty of riots, marches, and general disorder. Today The country is now urban and suburban, and although communications are rapid, there’s little interpersonal contact. The media are suspect. The government is seen more as an adversary or an imperial ruler than an arbitrator accepted by a consensus of concerned citizens. Businessmen are viewed as unscrupulous predators who take advantage of anyone weak enough to be exploited. A major financial smashup in today’s atmosphere could do a lot more than wipe out a few naives in the stock market and unemploy some workers, as occurred in the ’30s; some sectors of society are now time bombs. It’s hard to say, for instance, what third- and fourth-generation welfare recipients are going to do when the going gets really tough. THE WAY PEOPLE WORK 1930s Relatively slow transportation and communication localized economic conditions. The U.S. itself was somewhat insulated from the rest of the world, and parts of the U.S. were fairly self-contained. Workers were mostly involved in basic agriculture and industry, creating widgets and other tangible items. There wasn’t a great deal of specialization, and that made it easier for someone to move laterally from one occupation into the next, without extensive retraining, since people were more able to produce the basics of life on their own. Most women never joined the workforce, and the wife in a marriage acted as a “backup” system should the husband lose his job. Today The whole world is interdependent, and a war in the Middle East or a revolution in Africa can have a direct and immediate effect on a barber in Chicago or Krakow. Since the whole economy is centrally controlled from Washington, a mistake there can be a national disaster. People generally aren’t in a position to roll with the punches as more than half the people in the country belong to what is known as the “service economy.” That means, in most cases, they’re better equipped to shuffle papers than make widgets. Even “necessary” services are often terminated when times get hard. Specialization is part of what an advanced industrial economy is all about, but if the economic order changes radically, it can prove a liability. THE FINANCIAL MARKETS 1930s The last depression is identified with the collapse of the stock market, which lost over 90% of its value from 1929 to 1933. A secure bond was the best possible investment as interest rates dropped radically. Commodities plummeted, reducing millions of farmers to near subsistence levels. Since most real estate was owned outright and taxes were low, a drop in price didn’t make a lot of difference unless you had to sell. Land prices plummeted, but since people bought it to use, not unload to a greater fool, they didn’t usually have to sell. Today This time, stocks—and especially commodities—are likely to explode on the upside as people panic into them to get out of depreciating dollars in general and bonds in particular. Real estate will be—next to bonds—the most devastated single area of the economy because no one will lend money long term. And real estate is built on the mortgage market, which will vanish. Everybody who invests in this depression thinking that it will turn out like the last one will be very unhappy with the results. Being aware of the differences between the last depression and this one makes it a lot easier to position yourself to minimize losses and maximize profits. So much for the differences. The crucial, obvious, and most important similarity, however, is that most people’s standard of living will fall dramatically. The Greater Depression has started. Most people don’t know it because they can neither confront the thought nor understand the differences between this one and the last. As a climax approaches, many of the things that you’ve built your life around in the past are going to change and change radically. The ability to adjust to new conditions is the sign of a psychologically healthy person. Look for the opportunity side of the crisis. The Chinese symbol for “crisis” is a combination of two other symbols—one for danger and one for opportunity. The dangers that society will face in the years ahead are regrettable, but there’s no point in allowing anxiety, frustration, or apathy to overcome you. Face the future with courage, curiosity, and optimism rather than fear. You can be a winner, and if you plan carefully, you will be. The great period of change will give you a chance to regain control of your destiny. And that in itself is the single most important thing in life. This depression can give you that opportunity; it’s one of the many ways the Greater Depression can be a very good thing for both you as an individual and society as a whole. Editor’s note: America is about to enter a crisis far more severe than what we saw in 2008–2009. It could all start after Trump’s inauguration and could change everything… in sudden, unexpected ways. This is exactly why Doug and his team put together a time-sensitive video explaining how it could all go down. Click here to watch it now.

" Joji Morishita said at a press conference.[and] never falls (1 Cor 135 7-8) Just as Paul and others had expanded the understanding of agape to make it all-encompassing King in his teaching builds upon Paul and brings out agapes creativity its capacity to create togetherness and community The pestering but important gadfly Kings medium for enacting his teaching civil disobedience was also informed by the Greeks or rather one Greek in particular Three times in his 1963 "Letter from Birmingham Jail" King evokes Socrates (469-399 BC) the philosopher who famously made the public streets and squares of Athens his classroom Kings letter is addressed to fellow clergymen who had discouraged his practice of nonviolent resistance on the grounds that it was "unwise and untimely" and could incite civil disturbances In making the case for the importance of civil disobedience King introduces Socrates as one of its early practitioners: Just as Socrates felt that it was necessary to create a tension in the mind so that individuals could rise from the bondage of myths and half truths to the unfettered realm of creative analysis and objective appraisal so must we see the need for nonviolent gadflies to create the kind of tension in society that will help men rise from the dark depths of prejudice and racism to the majestic heights of understanding and brotherhood The image of a gadfly is drawn from the Apology a speech attributed to Socrates and related by his student Plato in which he responds to the charge that he is corrupting Athens young citizens with his unconventional and provocative teaching Socrates compares the lazy inert Athenian state to a tired old steed and his own interrogation and urging of Athenian citizens to the buzzing of a gadfly Like the fly he may be annoying but Socrates argued Athenian citizens needed such pestering in order to be stirred into action and improve their lives This was precisely Kings point in his letter to opponents of his methods: progress towards social justice can only be achieved through peaceful actions that annoy the status quo that is through nonviolent gadflies and the productive tension they create Persistent and irritating activism requires courage and significant risk Socrates and King alike lost their lives for their causes but both saw peaceful agitation as essential to their identity and work Applying the Classics to the 20th century And so just as the term agape was able to capture Kings concept of transcendent love in a way no English word could his evocation of Socrates the pestering yet productive gadfly could inform our understanding of the aims of civil disobedience in a uniquely memorable way In the speech "Ive Been to the Mountaintop" King passes on the fantasy of living in ancient Greece or Rome Ultimately he declares his preference for life in the "now" of 1968 But his lived engagement with the Classics bridges these eras showing his listeners and readers how classical ideas can speak to us today Timothy Joseph Associate Professor of Classics College of the Holy Cross This article was originally published on The Conversation Read the original article Contact us at [email protected] There’s very little good news with white-nose syndrome a fungal disease spreading across the United States and Canada The fungus Geomyces destructans infects the nose and wings of bats causing them to wake up early from hibernation and often starve to death Since the syndrome was first identified among bats in New York in 2006 populations of several species in the northeast have been devastated But today researchers report online in Ecology Letters that one species of bat is reducing the risk of extinction with individual bats hibernating alone rather than in large groups "That’s really positive" says Katie Gillies of Bat Conservation International in Austin which helped fund the research In addition populations in colder drier caves are experiencing proportionally fewer cases of white-nose syndrome than those located elsewhere Yet the situation remains dire for the bats Gillies and others caution with populations greatly reduced and few tools for wildlife managers to help the bats The new study led by graduate student Kate Langwig of the University of California Santa Cruz compiled survey data on all six species of bats in the northeast from before and after the arrival of the fungus "It’s been guesswork until this study" says Paul Cryan a biologist at US Geological Survey in Fort Collins Colorado who was not involved in the research The conclusions confirmed previous impressions: Two species big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) and Eastern small-footed bats (Myotis leibii) are relatively unimpacted by the fungus But populations of the Indiana bat (M sodalis) already on the federal endangered species list and three other species have taken a nosedive Two of the declining species are solitary-roosting bats which would be expected to have lower rates of transmission than more gregarious bats And in fact the researchers predict that the populations of one type the tri-colored bat (Perimyotis subflavus) will eventually stabilize But the northern-long-eared bat (M septentrionalis) doesn’t appear that fortunate: Even though these animals roost alone during hibernation all 14 populations in the study disappeared within 5 years of the fungus arriving at those caves The reason isn’t known but Langwig says that the population might have shrunk to a point of no return; the few remaining bats might have been unable to find mates for example The outlook could be just as dire for gregarious bats which hibernate in cozy clumps of individuals In theory the fungus is more likely to wipe out these colonies After the first few years of the epidemic research had suggested that little brown bats (Mlucifugus) might vanish from the Northeast within 16 years But the data gathered by Langwig’s group suggest that the worst declines were over by 2009 To its surprise the team also noticed a dramatic increase in the percentages of the highly social little brown bats that hibernate alone ranging up to 75% of a colony "There’s been a real change in behavior" Langwig says The same loss of sociality is happening to a lesser extent in Indiana bats but apparently not widely enough to slow their decline The researchers also collected data on temperature and humidity within caves used by the two best-studied species: the Indiana bat and the little brown bat Populations in the colder and drier caves declined less which makes sense because most kinds of fungus do better in higher humidity To co-author Marm Kilpatrick of University of California Santa Cruz this offers hope that the driest coolest caves are a refuge from the fungus *This item has been corrected on 5 July Due to an editing error a previous version of this story mistakenly referred to Geomyces destructans as a bat species It is the fungus afflicting neon-gobsmacked raceway in Mario Kart 8 I snake left then right then left again chaining mini-turbos and rocketing past visually thumping loudspeakers pulsing purplish stars and a tower-sized EQ that throbs in time with the soundtrack’s symphony of techno Everything’s moving and alive and lit up like one long continuous Jumbotron And then I’m gliding over lacquered blackness my just-upturned anti-grav wheels flying inches above what looks like grooved vinyl the music flanging the track ahead twisting and looping back at me — above me — like a disco Mbius strip That’s what it’s like to wrap your hands around the Wii U’s GamePad and plumb Mario Kart 8‘s wild panoply of wonderfully absurd tracks — 16 new 16 reimagined — spinning sideslipping soaring and tumbling roaring down vast mountainside waterfalls or bulleting through squalling banks of lightning-lit clouds (“Hello hello… I’m at a place called Vertigo…“) Imagine a carnival of race tropes a grab bag of driver profiles tactics and race types a melange of little gameplay iterations and configuration tweaks and “Holy crap I’m racing up and down that” moments jammed into a single game To sum up my affection for this best of all Nintendo’s Mario Karts to date in a few words: lavish kaleidoscopic gasp-inducing ingenious exotic balletic and — let’s switch from words to statements — something I’ll be playing for a long long time Not because the basic kart racing’s been rejiggered in some wondrous new Nintendo-fied way It hasn’t Think of it more like a 22-year-old snowball that’s still snowballing a slightly bigger smorgasbord of soothing cartoon-scape tracks and fanciful kart types a collage of all-terrain vehicles (including actual ATVs this time enlarging racer metrics like speed acceleration and handling) some new objects to toss (the cleverest: the piranha plant that snaps up items coins and other racers and the three-use boomerang flower that does damage outgoing and incoming) upside-down anti-grav racing (though since the screen shifts to maintain perspective it doesn’t feel like upside-down racing) more karts and kart parts and unlockables and so forth And then Nintendo whops you upside both retinas with some of the most sublime visuals ever seen in or out of a Nintendo game The ballyhooed new mechanic — antigravity racing your wheels automatically flipping perpendicular to the ground like Doc Brown’s DeLorean during Back to the Future‘s coda — makes the new every-which-way (including upside-down and backwards) tracks feel cooler to course through but that’s about it unless you’re playing cooperatively The novelty here’s that instead of avoiding drivers you’re encouraged to ram them which causes both vehicles to turbo off in different directions But it’s too happenstance as a solo tactic other drivers slamming into you from behind unexpectedly or sliding away at the last minute and wrecking your angle of attack Team up with another player by contrast and it becomes an indispensable tactic the two of you slamming into one another willfully rocketing down the course like a yo-yoing centrifuge The series’ signature element of chance remains: the most skilled players in the world can still wind up losing an otherwise expertly played race thanks to another player’s inopportunely dispatched blue shell And as usual finding the fastest path through a course (and figuring out how to maximize drifting through it) is at least half of winning You can hone your skills learning from the best players by using returning features like Ghost mode (in Time Trials) uploading your own performances as you like And though I wasn’t able to test it (it’s not working yet) the game now supports (modest) editing and uploading of video clips to YouTube a move that only brings it up to par with its rivals but warrants an attaboy nonetheless You can’t talk about Mario Kart 8 the most important game Nintendo’s yet released for its flagship console without thinking about the troubled state of the Wii U Mario Kart 8 alone won’t save the Wii U if indeed the Wii U needs saving That’s the implicit question the kart-riding elephant in all the game’s glittering stadiums water parks shoals harbors mansions and electrodromes No single game has the power to make (or for that matter break) something as multivalent as a platform Mario Kart 8 is wonderful thank goodness but it’s still just one game Nor does the racer best emblematize what the Wii U stands for: playing games with a tablet that’s not a tablet juggling input from disjunct screens that aren’t supposed to feel disjunct (and they definitely seem at odds here — I rarely felt comfortable enough to look down) Sure the Wii U GamePad offers sometimes-complimentary feedback but nothing about its stack of command center feeds tracking racer positions or letting you enable motion control steering on the fly feel essential much less exude halcyon-days-Wii novelty Put it this way: if you have a Wii U it’s the proverbial no-brainer for any sort of player casual to pro If you don’t own a Wii U here’s a reason to buy one with the caveat that the Wii U’s software future looks pretty hazy right now Nintendo’s deluxe 32GB Wii U bundled with Mario Kart 8 runs $330 knocking $30 off the standalone price for the racer so there’s that but it’s still $330 for one game (plus a driving wheel and Wii Remote) and a platform with an uncertain future But it’s also one of the best games Nintendo’s delivered and a reminder that when the company’s firing on all cylinders — even when it’s standing on its own shoulders gameplay-wise — its creative output remains peerless 5 out of 5 Wii U Write to Matt Peckham at [email protected]" which the university said would "provide
