Mary Kom’s Rio Olympic dreams still not over, says AIBA

first_imgIt seems boxing icon MC Mary Kom’s dreams of taking part in what would be her swansong Olympics in Rio are still not over despite of the five-time world champion suffering a second-round exit at the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships today.The 2012 London Olympics bronze medallist, competing in the flyweight category (51 kg), lost 0-2 to Germany’s Azize Nimani. The seasoned Manipuri boxer needed to reach the semi-finals to secure an Olympic berth.However, the world boxing governing body AIBA told India Today that Mary still has a possibility to qualify for the Rio Games to be held from August 5-21. (Boxer Sarita Devi fails to qualify for Rio Olympics)PERMUTATIONS AND COMBINATIONSMary’s Olympic hopes now depends on how two other boxers from the asian/oceanian region, Ren Cancan and Lin Yu-Ting, finish in the competition.According to the AIBA, if world No. 1 Chinese boxer Ren Cancan and Taiwan’s No. 3 boxer Lin Yu-Ting make it to the semi-finals in this competition, then Mary can get lucky and qualify. Both Cancan and Lin have already got quota berth for the Olympics.World Championships is the final qualifying competition for the Rio Games to be held from August 5-21. Only three weight categories of 51 kg, 60 kg and 75 kg are part of the women’s boxing competitions at the Olympics.The 33-year-old mother of three, had earlier said that she will quit the sport post the 2016 Olympics.last_img read more
