Man facing federal charges over 23-year-old woman found dead in his car

first_imgReleased by Boston Police(PROVIDENCE, R.I.) — A Rhode Island man is facing federal kidnapping charges for allegedly abducting a young woman who was found dead in his car.Louis Coleman III, 32, of Providence, Rhode Island, faces one count of kidnapping, which resulted in the death of Jassy Correia, a 23-year-old Massachusetts woman last seen leaving a Boston nightclub, authorities said on Sunday.Correia, who has a 2-year-old daughter, was last seen Feb. 24 leaving Venue Nightclub, where she was celebrating her birthday. Her body was found in a suitcase in the trunk of a car stopped by police on a Delaware highway last week.Investigators said she was seen getting into a car with a man later identified by police as Coleman.“The interstate kidnapping resulting in death is the most applicable charge and carries the highest possible sentence. It’s a mandatory life charge and a death-eligible charge,” U.S. Attorney Andrew Lelling said.Police searched Coleman’s Rhode Island apartment last week and obtained surveillance that appeared to show him entering the building carrying a body wrapped in a blanket, authorities said.“I can’t tell you how upsetting this is,” Boston Police Commissioner William Gross told ABC Boston affiliate WCVB-TV. “No family should ever, ever have to go through this.”Correia’s cousin, Katia Depina, said at a news conference last week that the family was “all devastated by what happened.”“She did not deserve this. She went out to celebrate her birthday and never returned home,” Depina said. “We want justice for her death.”Coleman was arrested Thursday and was held at a jail in Delaware. He’s expected to make an initial appearance in federal court later Monday. It’s unclear whether he’s retained an attorney. Copyright © 2019, ABC Radio. All rights reserved.last_img read more

Experts: Trump Could Face Lengthy Audit for Florida Move

first_imgPresident Trump might not be able to change his primary residence to Palm Beach as quickly and easily as he had planned.According to tax lawyer Mark Klein, New York state officials are known for auditing wealthy residents who seek to make such moves to lower-tax states, in order to ensure they are real and not simply on paper.Klein explains, “New York says just because you fill out a piece of paper, that doesn’t make you a Floridian. People have this misunderstanding that if you go to Florida and fill out an affidavit, you register to vote and you get a driver’s license, that is all it takes.”Tax accountant Barry Horowitz says of Trump, “It’s 100 percent he’ll get audited. There’ll be a fight.” Such audits can last for years, Horowitz adds. The general rule to avoid paying New York taxes is to spend less than 184 days a year in the state. However, auditors and judges could examine where Trump’s business is headquartered (in Trump Tower), as well as the size of his various homes, where he displays his family photos and valuable artwork, among other things.Trump announced his intention to make Palm Beach his primary residency last Thursday, tweeting: New York Governor Andrew Cuomo responded:Good riddance. It’s not like @realDonaldTrump paid taxes here anyway… He’s all yours, Florida. https://t.co/9AX0q1aBkQ— Andrew Cuomo (@NYGovCuomo) November 1, 2019 Trump responded to both New York politicians on Friday with this tweet:…..with a President and Federal Government that wants our wonerful City and State to flourish and thrive. I Love New York!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 1, 2019 ….this decision, but in the end it will be best for all concerned. As President, I will always be there to help New York and the great people of New York. It will always have a special place in my heart!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 1, 2019 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, the White House, is the place I have come to love and will stay for, hopefully, another 5 years as we MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, but my family and I will be making Palm Beach, Florida, our Permanent Residence. NYC is getting dirty & unsafe again, as….— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 1, 2019 New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio also chimed in, tweeting:Our deepest condolences to the good people of Florida as Trump attempts to outrun his past (and near future). https://t.co/QFqeYO7xTq— Mayor Bill de Blasio (@NYCMayor) November 1, 2019 In New York, the President is paying a top marginal tax rate to the city and state that adds up to a total of 12.7 percent. A tax overhaul which was implemented in 2017 means he can no longer deduct most of those state and local taxes from his federal return. In Florida, Trump would pay zero income taxes as well as zero estate taxes.last_img read more

Proteas play their part on Mandela Day

first_imgThe South African team is preparing for the first one-day international against Sri Lanka, which takes place on Saturday, but felt it was important to share some “Madiba magic” with young cricket enthusiasts in Sri Lanka. South Africa’s touring Proteas played their part on Neslon Mandela International Day by hosting a coaching clinic for a group of under-17 cricketers in Colombo, Sri Lanka on Thursday. “We hope that he is peaceful on this special day of his, and that all South Africans celebrate in a way that would make him proud.” India will then tour South Africa from 18 November to 19 January, playing three tests, seven ODIs, three T20 internationals and three other games against the SA Invitation XI. “It was a great experience interacting with these up and coming cricketers, their enthusiasm and excitement for the game is humbling. I remember being at that age and being consumed by the game, I hope they learnt a lot.” The Proteas will play five one-day internationals and three T20 internationals before returning to South Africa in early August. ‘No words’“There are no words to describe the impact Madiba has made on us as cricketers and for sport in our country,” De Villiers said. 19 July 2013 The Indian tour will be followed by Australia’s from 5 February to 14 March. It will include three tests, three T20 internationals and a four-day warm-up game against an SA Invitation XI. LegacyAaron Phangiso said he hopes Mandela’s legacy lives on forever: “It’s a pity that Nelson Mandela Day only happens once a year. We should strive to lead the life that Madiba lived at every occasion. Proteas’ captain AB de Villiers led the birthday praise for the 95-year-old former statesman, saying: “It was wonderful to be able to contribute to the local community today in celebration of Nelson Mandela’s 67 years of service to our country. “These are young aspiring cricketers and I have no doubt that they will carry this experience with them as motivation. They are really talented; I don’t know if that’s a good thing for South Africa, but Sri Lankan cricket is quite healthy. JP Duminy added: “Having this coaching clinic is a small contribution in the bigger context of what Nelson Mandela has done for South Africa. “Tata is an icon, and he deserves every bit of recognition and adoration that comes his way.” SAinfo reporter and Cricket South Africalast_img read more

How to Get That Terrence Malick Look in Your Next Film

first_imgAll of the great directors have a signature style that is at once recognizable and wholly representative of their work. Perhaps one of the most iconic cinematic styles belongs to the enigmatic director Terrence Malick as seen throughout his four-decade career.Top image via WikimediaIn a conversation about Tree of Life, Christopher Nolan calls Terrence Malick’s work “instantly recognizable.”His films are all very connected with each other and very recognizably his work. But it’s very tough to put your finger on why that is or what you’re seeing in that the technique is not immediately obvious. While the Malick-style is built on a rich tapestry of motifs and pathos, the cinematic tropes are distinctive and actually quite achievable on projects big and small. Here are some of the key ingredients to capture that “Terrence Malick look.”1. Shoot During Magic HourMost notable in the picturesque big Hollywood production Days of Heaven, Malick’s insentience to shoot as many scenes as possible in fleeting dusk light might be his most notable hallmark. The shadowless glow of twilight is perfect for capturing that Malick lighting style (as well as evenly lighting your scenes).2. Wide-Angle HandheldAfter Days of Heaven, Malick disappeared from cinema for 20 years. Once he returned, he completely abandoned many of the traditional Hollywood styles in which he was forced to work early in his career. The set two-shots and conversational cut-betweens seen in most narrative formats were eliminated in favor of a wandering wide-angle camera that constantly circles around subjects as they wander through the film.3. Close-Ups of HandsIf there is a Terrence Malick “shot” that has been most pastiched and reused, it would have to be the close-up of a hand being held out and lightly touching flowing blades of grass or wheat. You can see the same shot in pretty much every one of Malick’s films, as well as appropriated in shots from The Assassination of Jesse James and Marie Antoinette.4. Cutaway Inserts of NatureThis is a style that stems back to his first feature, Badlands. Whether it’s simply light through tree branches, snakes sliding across grass or buffalo gawking at Richard Gere, Malick seemingly has never passed up any opportunity to break from filming movie stars to shoot scenic inserts of nature in its beauty.5. Whispering Existential NothingsAll the Malick footage in the world would be for naught if it didn’t include characters from the filming whispering existential non-sequiturs to no one in particular. Bonus points if the actor or actress whispering is being subjectively circled while lightly touching a tree branch in a friscilating dusk.If you’d like to see some of Malick’s influences firsthand, here’s a great supercut put together by Jacob T. Swinney of Malick-style shots in non-Malick directed films. What are your thoughts on the Malick look? Have any other style examples to share? Let us know in the comments!last_img read more
