Bakery businesses are launching delivery services, either locally or nationally, to continue to thrive during the coronavirus pandemic. Here, they discuss how to get started.“Transforming our business into a food delivery service was something we never anticipated or planned for,” explains Sara Christey of Edinburgh’s The Beach House Café & Bakery.Like many bakery businesses, the bakery has adapted to trading under coronavirus and, with the help of volunteers, is providing essential groceries to consumers who cannot get to the supermarket.A small team are delivering boxes of food to doorsteps by bike, and the business is also offering a pick-up service that involves minimal contact.“Our local community have supported us for years and we thought this was an opportunity to give something back – we are on a very steep learning curve and adding new, high-quality products every day,”“Our local community have supported us for years and we thought this was an opportunity to give something back – we are on a very steep learning curve and adding new, high-quality products every day,” she adds. With vulnerable or self-isolating consumers unable or unwilling to leave their homes or visit supermarkets, many bakeries are working with their suppliers to offer groceries – such as cheese, milk, meat, flour and eggs – alongside their bakery products.Scarborough-based Cooplands (pictured) has combined some of its suppliers’ products with its own baked goods to create the Food Parcels service. Priced at £35 including delivery, the parcels contain a selection of essential groceries, bread and sweet treats such as flapjacks. It took Cooplands three days, working with agency Savvy Marketing, to develop a digital platform connected to its website that could take orders and payment online, with central management similar to how the business manages orders from its shops.“Partnering with delivery companies is expensive, so leveraging owned assets is important,” says Cooplands CEO Belinda Youngs. “Bakers are not delivering main meal solutions and generally have a lower average order, so efficient processes and restricted, densely populated geography are key success indicators.”Important things to think about are product ranges, how and when orders will be taken, the notice given for an order, delivery times and if businesses can produce the items ordered, advises Neville Morse, managing director at Janes Pantry.Bakeries also need to decide if they are local, regional or national, suggests Laurence Smith, owner of Fatherson Bakery. Options include using existing vehicles currently available in the business, working with a distribution partner or investing in a fleet.Smith says having a core project team and strong e-commerce platform was critical to his business launching its own grocery delivery website in a week.London-based Today Bread (pictured, right) set up online ordering through the Square Online Store system for a delivery and collection service.“It’s all about adapting and focusing on what’s possible or can be affordably accessed,” says Today Bread founder Alexandre Bettler. “Some of our team have brought in or sourced bikes to get orders to customers. You can either try to keep everything in house, or bring in third-parties to fill the gaps you can’t provide.”Working with a third party allows businesses to tap its customer base and expertise, adds a spokesperson from Just Eat. To work with an aggregator, however, businesses need paperwork to show proof of ownership, that the business address is registered with the council and Food Standards Agency (FSA) or Food Standards Scotland (FSS). To sign up with Just Eat, for example, they would need an FSA rating of three or above, or a Pass in Scotland. The decision to deliver on your own or go through an app is entirely individual, says Romy Miller, commercial director at Gail’s Bakery, which has an online shop selling produce and groceries for home delivery and click & collect.“There are benefits to retaining the end-to-end customer relationship, but there are also challenges with trouble-shooting last-mile issues, when they happen. Going through an app has fees attached to it, but there is a benefit in ready-and-waiting mass customer awareness.”But whatever approach a business takes, offering delivery can give bakers access to new custom.“The current Covid-19 period has given rise to a new delivery marketplace – there are so many great things available that we could never access direct to our homes in the past,” adds Miller.

Jan De Nul Group is demanding the repayment of all installments paid to Croatia’s troubled Uljanik Shipyard, plus interest, after they cancelled an order for Newbuilding 500 – a cutter suction dredger. The Shipbuilding Contract for Hull 500 was signed two years ago between Uljanik d.d. and Dredging and Maritime Management SA (DMM) Luxembourg, the company in ownership of Jan de Nul Group. On April 19, the client said that it would seek the repayment of its advance payments for the vessel that was to have been built by the shipyard, Uljanik said in a statement via the Zagreb Stock Exchange.“Upon the negotiations which lasted few months among the Buyer, institutions of Republic of Croatia and Uljanik d.d. which aimed that instead repayment of advance payments the vessel be completed in Uljanik Shipyard or alternatively in foreign shipyard, the Buyer made final decision by which he requests repayment of advance payments increased for the interest,” the statement said.According to the subject, Shipbuilding Contract Uljanik d.d. is obliged in period of seven days from receipt of the request in headquarters of the company to effect repayment of advance payments increased for interest whereby the part of advance payments has been secured by state guarantees. The interested parties will continue to work on finding a solution to reduce the harm the latest developments are expected to cause to the state and the shipyard.
Google and China are again at odds, this time with accusations by Google that China is interfering with Gmail. Internet users in China have reported difficulties with Gmail over the last few weeks, complaining that the email service is slow or unavailable. While it’s been made to look as though it’s a technical problem on Google’s end, the search engine giant says that the Chinese government is responsible. “There is no technical issue on our side. We have checked extensively,” says a Google spokesperson. “This is a government blockage carefully designed to look like the problem is with Gmail.”The Guardian contends that the move by the Chinese government may be a response to the “Jasmine Revolution” – an online effort to spur pro-democracy efforts in China following the uprisings in the Middle East. Whatever the motivation, it isn’t the first time that Google and China have run into problems with each other. In January of last year, Google accused China of launching hacking attacks, an effort purportedly to gain access to the accounts of Chinese dissidents. The issues with Gmail make it the latest Google product that cannot be fully accessed in China, joining YouTube, Blogger, and Google Maps as banned or restricted services. Google has refused to comply with the Chinese governments censorship demands, and as a result has seen its search engine market share continue to drop in China. 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market audrey watters A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Related Posts Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Tags:#Google#news#NYT#web Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic…
Will the National Register of Citizens (NRC) end 40 years of a “constant state of anxiety” for people on either side of the indigenous-immigrant divide in Assam? This is one of several “uncomfortable questions” an Assamese film being made intends to ask while batting for co-existence despite political and religious differences.Filmmaker Shankar Borua had befriended a Bengal-origin Muslim school teacher while filming for his documentary Beleaguered on a river island in western Assam five years ago. The focus of the documentary was why Surjya Tejor Anya Naam (Sun is Another Name of Blood), the first film on the political insurgency in Assam was made.Produced by Mrinal Kumar Saikia, now a Bharatiya Janata Party MLA, that feature film was on the armed revolution by the United Liberation Front of Asom and its genesis in a perceived policy of exploitation through settling immigrants. “My new film starts from where Beleaguered ended with a so-called Miya writer, who happens to be a lower primary school teacher on an erosion-prone river island inhabited by poor people, saying he speaks, writes and dreams in Assamese,” Mr. Borua told The Hindu. The film, expected to be completed by January next year, is tentatively titled Beleaguered. But Mr Borua intends to have a ‘Miya’ word added that “might raise eyebrows”.The teacher-writer who Mr. Borua met five years ago is the protagonist of his new project. The teacher’s life has been envisaged as that of members of his community referred to with pejoratives such as ‘Miya’, ‘Bangladeshi’, ‘na-Asomiya’ (new Assamese), and ‘Chorua’ (dweller of char, or sandbar/river island). “Our film has real-life characters playing their parts. It is actually a film within a film; an entire unit goes to this sandbar to make a documentary that was thought to have been some wildlife project. Some members of the unit, inherently dismissive of immigrants, get into trouble,” Mr. Borua said. The unit, a mix of liberal and radical people, is attacked by “both the Miyas (Muslims) and Asomiyas (Assamese)”. The Muslim teacher and his friends get attacked too, but the director stands his ground to complete the film because of his friendship with the former.“The film is directly linked with the NRC that was expected to be the finishing line for an issue that has dogged Assam for 40 years but has put a question mark on the future of a category of people. The issue resonates through other layers across the narrative,” Mr. Borua said. Assam, he said, has the most Muslims after Kashmir.

Cayetano: Senate, Drilon to be blamed for SEA Games mess “Of course we were mad about it,” he said. “They were down 22 but, hey, we have to worry about ourselves. We still have one more game. We can’t worry about what they’re doing.”The Cavs dropped their 10th in a row to finish 19-63, the fourth-worst record in franchise history and just the fifth time they’ve failed to win at least 20.Cleveland again played without star forward Kevin Love, whose season was sabotaged early by a toe injury that required surgery and altered everything for the Cavs. Love’s situation made things even tougher on the Cavs, who initially believed they could compete while recovering from the loss of James as a free agent for the second time. Now the focus turns to coach Larry Drew’s future and next month’s NBA draft lottery.Rookie Collin Sexton scored 18 points and had a season-high 10 assists for the Cavs. He also joined Larry Bird (1979-80) and Stephen Curry (2009-10) as the only rookies in league history to average at least 16 points while making over 40% of their 3-pointers and 80% of their free throws. There were some positives for the Cavs and none bigger than Sexton, who shrugged off a slow start and came on in the season’s second half.“Everything,” Sexton said when asked what changed in him from Game 1 to 82. “It’s a whole change. Coming into the league people said I couldn’t shoot and stuff like that, but I just kept working on it through the season and it got better and better.”If the Hornets get back to the postseason for the first time in three years, Walker will be the reason. The three-time All-Star, who is scheduled to become a free agent on July 1, is averaging 34.4 points in his last five games.DREW DONE? It may be a few days before Drew knows his fate.He guided the Cavs through a turbulent, injury-filled season that ended with uncertainty. Before the game, Drew said, “Let’s hope not” when asked if this season would be his last. The 61-year-old, who replaced good Tyronn Lue after six games, was noncommittal when he was asked if wanted to return as Cleveland’s coach.“Um, I really don’t want to get into that part of it right now,” said Drew, who plans to meet with general manager Koby Altman. “As tough as the season was, I still really enjoyed coming to work every day.”TIP-INSHornets: F Michael Kidd-Gilchrist was not with the team for the second straight game because of personal reasons. … C Cody Zeller was again out with a sore left knee. … Walker enters Wednesday’s game — perhaps the final one of his career with Charlotte — as the franchise leader in points and made 3-pointers, field goals and free throws.Cavaliers: Love played 13 minutes on Sunday as a salute to close friend Channing Frye, who is retiring. About the authorFreddie TaylorShare the loveHave your say Liverpool hero Aldridge: Klopp must cull two or three playersby Freddie Taylor10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveLiverpool hero John Aldridge has advised Jurgen Klopp to replace two or three players this summer. The Reds boss fielded his second string XI in Monday night’s FA Cup loss to Wolves.Without naming names, Aldridge believes a few of those fringe senior players blew their chance.”The goals we conceded against Wolves were really poor,” Aldridge wrote in his Liverpool Echo column.”James Milner has been almost faultless this season but he made a bad mistake and got punished with their opening goal.”Then after we got ourselves back into the game at 1-1 we were so slow to close Ruben Neves down and he hammered one into the bottom corner. It was a great hit but he shouldn’t have been allowed to get the shot away.”Two or three of that line up won’t be at the club come the start of pre-season.”I don’t want to name names but we all know who they are. Monday night underlined that they need to be replaced.”Klopp gave an opportunity to some senior pros who have been waiting for their chance but they wasted it.”I didn’t see players showing they were willing to run through a brick wall for the club. They played within themselves and that’s not good enough.”Hoever and fellow youngsters Curtis Jones and Rafa Camacho needed help but they got very little.”You certainly couldn’t attach any blame to the young lads. They tried their hardest but they were let down by senior players who didn’t give their all.”
Brighton boss Potter delivers challenge to Bissoumaby Paul Vegasa month agoSend to a friendShare the loveGraham Potter is hoping Yves Bissouma can add goals to his Brighton side against Aston Villa on Wednesday.Bissouma came off the bench against Newcastle last Saturday and will likely start in the Carabao Cup clash with Villa.Quizzed on whether Bissouma can add to his side’s goalscoring threat, Potter said: “I think so. He has got the qualities.”It is about getting him into the right areas of the pitch, getting him to shoot at the right time and from the right places – because sometimes he shoots from maybe not the best location – but you can see his ability.”He has only been training with us a week but you can already tell he’s that type of footballer, a free player, that can excite and get a crowd off their seats.”He has worked hard to get back from his injury and we’re looking forward to seeing him on the pitch on Wednesday.”It is a good game for him to get some time on the pitch.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your say
Lee Clark: Newcastle need Almiron goal; Noble tribute; Souness right on Man Utdby Lee Clarka month agoSend to a friendShare the loveWithout being disrespectful to Brighton, because every team you come up against in the Premier League are tough opponents, but if Newcastle are playing teams in the same situation as themselves at St. James’ Park, you expect them to be on the front foot, be positive and taking the game on.I think Steve Bruce would have wanted his team to play that way. He certainly wouldn’t have wanted the 71 per cent possession to 29 per cent possession ratio in favour of the away team. In the first-half Brighton were totally dominant and in saying that if you look over the course of the game Newcastle probably had as many clear cut chances as Brighton. The chance that Miguel Almiron had is one that a striker with confidence puts down the side of the goalkeeper into the corner of the goal. Instead he just fired it straight down the goalkeeper’s throat. That’s a player who is trying desperately hard to break this goalscoring duck. He’s got such a brilliant work ethic for the team, the reports you get from the training ground is that he works ever so hard on the pitch and I think everybody that is associated with the club are willing Almiron on to get this goal because I think if he gets the first one, his confidence levels will rise and he’ll go on a bit of a run.I know Brighton had their own chances and they were the dominant team. So I think all in all it was a disappointing performance and a disappointing weekend because I think Steve Bruce and his staff were probably expecting three points. The positive thing out of it is that they haven’t lost the game, they’ve kept the clean sheet that will help the defenders and the goalkeeper and then obviously they’ve got a point from a performance that probably didn’t warrant it. The problem they’ve got now is they’ve got extremely tough league games in the next three. They’ve got to start to picking up points because it’s getting really tight at the bottom there in terms of there being five or six teams where one or two wins can get you out of the relegation zone and on the other hand two or three losses puts you right in there and gives you confidence issues.DELIGHTED FOR ANDY, BUT…I was absolutely delighted to see Andy Carroll back in Newcastle colours, but the problem we’ve got is everyone is hanging their hopes on him because of the season we’ve had. It’s a big call because of his injury problems, he’s not going to be straight into the firing line in terms of starting games. It’s going to have to be a gradual process with Andy working up his match fitness. He got 10-15 minutes against Brighton and I think Steve will be trying to use him from the bench and maybe giving him a little bit longer with each appearance, then seeing how long it will take before he believes he is ready to start. But Andy has obviously lifted the mood around the club and around the city. All I’d warn is that there’s a lot of pressure on him because everyone is hanging their hopes on him to be the one that turns things around for the club.HUDDERSFIELDI’ve seen the two games since Danny Cowley took over and I totally agree with his sentiments from what he said after those games: it’s a club that has forgot how to win. It’s been that long. It’s a group of players, I think he used the words, that play the scoreboard rather than the game, so even when they go ahead they are worrying about getting pegged back, and if they get overtaken it seems to effect their mentality and confidence. I thought for an hour they did great against West Bromwich Albion, it’s always a tough place to go the Hawthorns. But then as soon as West Brom got back to 2-2 there looked like there’d be only one winner and that ended up being the case.Danny has come out and said he feels the team isn’t fit enough to play the way he wants to play for 94, 95 minutes. It’s a really tough period for the club. The manager is trying to get his ideas across, it’s not going to happen overnight, especially if he wants to change so many things. Reports stated that ten days leading up to the game Danny gave the players so much information, so you could worry about it being overload for them. You just hope that they can get this first win sooner rather than later because the longer it goes on the longer it will just frighten the life out of everyone in terms of fans, players, staff, because everyone starts losing their confidence and wondering where the next result is coming from.SOUNESS WAS RIGHT ABOUT MAN UTDI think there is a good chance that it could be the worst ever Manchester United squad in the Premier League era without a doubt. I was really disappointed with their performance against West Ham United. The three guys in the Sky Sports studio – Graeme Souness, Roy Keane and Jose Mourinho – know a hell of a lot about winning major trophies and what it takes, and they were quite scathing and rightly so on the performance level that Man Utd delivered against West Ham. I thought it was quite inept, quite flat to be honest. All you expect from a Man Utd team, even in the games that they’ve lost, you expect them to be up and at you, creating numerous chances, playing with lots of a tempo, lots of speed, hitting you on the break, you’re always worried even when you’re in front that they can come back and hurt you because of their pace. They just look like a run of the mill Premier League team at the moment. People are talking about them breaking into the top-four, I would say that you’ve got to worry about them getting into the top-six at this moment in time, never mind the top-four, because I think their performance levels are quite average at best. NOBLE RIGHT WHERE HE WANTS TO BEThe answer to Mark Noble joining a bigger club is tough when you’re playing for the club that you love and support and you’re playing every week and you’re classed as one of the main men. He’s been a terrific ambassador for West Ham. You can see he loves the club. When they’ve had the times of turmoil and disappointment, he’s always been the one that steps up and comes to the fore, whether that has to be communicating with the fans or on the pitch. He’s the leader for those West Ham supporters and their fans – and the group of players who are in the dressing room would understand what the club means to play for West Ham because of Mark Noble. Am I surprised he hasn’t been in the England set-up? Yeah I probably am. But in terms of playing for a big club, I don’t think he’d be too bothered or interested in that. He’s living his dream so I don’t think moving anywhere else would’ve been of any interest to him. TagsTransfersOpinionAbout the authorLee ClarkShare the loveHave your say

Brody’s reputation for penning thoughtful, articulate, original narratives in music began back in 2009 with the release of “Brothers”, a touching song about a loved one leaving for the military, which resonated both north and south of the border. Celebrated songs such as “Trail in Life”, “Another Man’s Gold”, “Bounty”, have gone on to place Brody in a unique category all his own, rising beyond the conventional tracks that can be heard on mainstream radio in lyrical composition, and yet still retaining conventional success, with Brody recently landing his 22nd Top 10 hit at country radio, with “Good Goodbye.” His ballad “Time” released in 2016, laments on the passing of time, becoming especially poignant in a social media era with less one-on-one interaction with loved ones, earned critical acclaim and a great deal of recognition, showcasing Brody’s unique ability to make people think about their actions through his lyrics. Ultimately, he oversaw IDG’s launch of roughly 300 magazines and newspapers, 460 websites, 200 mobile bile apps and 700 events in 97 countries.“Pat’s foremost desire was for IDG to make the world a better place through the medium of information technology,” Boyd says. “We have an outstanding leadership team in place to ensure that the company he created will continue to grow and prosper.”
Could it be an autonomous off-road machine? Audi Audi has so far revealed three AI-branded concept cars in the past few years, but it’s ready to complete the quartet with what it calls the AI:Trail concept. On Friday, the German luxury brand revealed a teaser for the upcoming concept vehicle ahead of its premiere at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show in September. The company called it an “electrically driven off-roader” and the shadowy photo appears to underscore that it will, indeed, focus on off-roading. There’s a set of knobby tires present and the AI:Trail looks to sit pretty high off the ground, which would bode well for tougher terrains. The main set of doors appear hinged in the middle in a more untraditional fashion and the vast amount of glass teases an open and airy cabin. All of Audi’s AI concepts have focused on self-driving technology and this concept car should follow the same trend. It’s hard to tell what’s going on at the front and rear, but the taillight design appears to mimic the look from previous AI concepts. The past three concepts debuted in Frankfurt and China: the Aicon, Elaine and the AI:Me (is that like “Amy?”). The Aicon focused on Level 5 self-driving, which is the highest on the SAE scale of autonomy, while the Elaine showed off Level 4 autonomous technology. The AI:Me from the Shanghai Auto Show earlier this year presented a vision of urban autonomous driving and even boasted a virtual reality-infused cockpit. Each of the three concept cars have showcased an ambitious and optimistic look at future technology down the road. I wouldn’t say any of the four concepts directly hint at a specific upcoming vehicle, but perhaps we’ll see autonomous off-roaders at some point in our lifetimes. 2019 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison: A tougher off-roader 0 2019 Jeep Cherokee can handle the rough stuff Now playing: Watch this: Acura MDXMoving up one slot to sixth place on the American Made Index is the non-hybrid variant of the Acura MDX. Jeep With high trade tensions looming and increasing talk of tariffs, more and more consumers are looking to buy American. Cars.com has released its annual American Made Index, showcasing companies that use the most American-sourced parts and labor in their vehicles. The results may surprise you.Cars.com analyzed more than 100 US-built vehicles for five key data points: manufacturing location, parts sourcing, US employment, engine sourcing and transmission sourcing. You might think something like the Ford F-150 would top the list, but it drops from its No. 5 spot for 2018 and out of the top 10 completely. Even the first-place holder, the Jeep Cherokee, is a pretty global product. It’s a Jeep, sure, but that brand is part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, an Italian-owned business.Cars.com surveyed 1,000 people and found that half are concerned about automotive import tariffs, with 41% saying they are unsure if tariffs would make them more likely to buy American. Either way, we’re big fans of all the vehicles on this list. These days, buying American doesn’t necessarily mean sticking with a US-based automaker. Woman shops in a supermarket in Doha. Photo: ReutersThe government of Qatar took the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations’ International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Monday, accusing it of human rights violations as a result of a boycott enacted last year. The UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt imposed a boycott on Qatar in June 2017, severing diplomatic and transport ties with the tiny, rich state, accusing it of supporting terrorism.Doha denies that and says the pressure is aimed at stripping it of its sovereignty.“As set forth in detail in Qatar’s application to the International Court, the UAE led these actions, which have had a devastating effect on the human rights of Qataris and residents of Qatar,” the government said in a statement.UAE’s minister of state for foreign affairs, Anwar Gargash, in a post on Twitter, dismissed the claims as another of Doha’s “lies.”The Qatari government said the UAE enacted a series of measures that discriminate against Qataris, including expelling them from the UAE, prohibiting them from entering or passing through the UAE, ordering UAE nationals to leave Qatar, and closing UAE airspace and seaports to Qatar.Qatar said it believed the actions were in violation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD) – including discrimination on the basis of nationality – of which the UAE and Qatar are both signatories.Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt are not signatories of the CERD convention. The complaint filed by Qatar late on Monday, accuses the United Arab Emirates of discriminating against Qataris in UAE by limiting their freedom of speech and movement, inciting hatred against them, shutting down local offices of Qatar’s state-funded Al Jazeera television station and blocking transmission of Qatari media outlets.Qatar is asking the court to order the UAE to take steps to comply with its obligations under the CERD, ceasing and revoking the measures and restoring the rights of Qataris. It also requested that the UAE make reparations, including compensation, but provided no details of the amount it might be seeking. The court’s registry confirmed late on Monday it received the complaint, the first step in a dispute which the court may hear. The court typically solicits opinions from both sides as to whether it has jurisdiction before considering the merits of a case, a process that often takes years.
Pandora first unveiled voice mode at CES in Las Vegas in January. At the time, chief product officer Chris Phillips told Variety that voice technology had advanced quite a bit since the early days of mobile voice assistants. Those advancements also shaped consumers’ expectations for voice usage, Phillips argued.Consumers used to talk to devices like they were dumb robots, he said. Now, they’re talking to them more like they would talk to their friends. “More and more consumers are going to become more and more vague,” Phillips said. One of the goals of Pandora’s voice mode was to make sense of those vague utterances by tapping into their past recommendations. “We are applying personalization to all the asks,” Phillips said. ×Actors Reveal Their Favorite Disney PrincessesSeveral actors, like Daisy Ridley, Awkwafina, Jeff Goldblum and Gina Rodriguez, reveal their favorite Disney princesses. However, the feature has been developed in-house at Pandora, which allows the company to make unique use of its own music recommendation capabilities. This makes it possible to ask for “music to start my day” for a personalized morning playlist, for “more like this” to tap into Pandora’s music recommendation chops, and for podcasts available on the music service. Citation: Princeton geoscientists report Greenland ice sheet melting rate is increasing (2012, November 20) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2012-11-princeton-geoscientists-greenland-ice-sheet.html More information: Mapping Greenland’s mass loss in space and time, Published online before print November 19, 2012, doi: 10.1073/pnas.1206785109 (PDF)AbstractThe melting of polar ice sheets is a major contributor to global sea-level rise. Early estimates of the mass lost from the Greenland ice cap, based on satellite gravity data collected by the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment, have widely varied. Although the continentally and decadally averaged estimated trends have now more or less converged, to this date, there has been little clarity on the detailed spatial distribution of Greenland’s mass loss and how the geographical pattern has varied on relatively shorter time scales. Here, we present a spatially and temporally resolved estimation of the ice mass change over Greenland between April of 2002 and August of 2011. Although the total mass loss trend has remained linear, actively changing areas of mass loss were concentrated on the southeastern and northwestern coasts, with ice mass in the center of Greenland steadily increasing over the decade. The two used data from the twin satellites used in the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) that orbit in tandem over the Earth. As they pass over the planet they measure very small differences in gravity between the two that correspond to the amount of mass below. In looking at data recorded during the period August 2002 to 2011, they were able to measure the changes in mass of the ice sheet that covers Greenland, which is second only to Antarctica in size. The two found that by analyzing GRACE data very closely they could actually pinpoint the parts of the ice sheet that were changing and by how much. They noted for example, that for the year 2003 to 2004, the bulk of melting occurred along the eastern coast of the island nation, whereas over the following year it was centered in the northeast. Surprisingly, they found that even as the ice sheet as a whole was losing mass, some mass was gained in central Greenland. It’s not known why this has happened, but it’s possibly due to higher amounts of snowfall that might have occurred. The melting of the polar ice sheets is believed to be associated with rising global temperatures, which in turn is believed by most scientists to be the result of increased amounts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere due mainly to human pollutants. As the ice sheets melt, global sea levels rise. By studying melting rates, scientists are able to provide better estimates on how much the sea will rise and when. Current estimates put sea level rise at 0.1 inches per year. Using the numbers from their study, the researchers estimate that sea levels will rise 2.4 inches over the next century from just the melting that is occurring in Greenland. They also note that based on current numbers, it would take approximately 13,000 years for all of the ice in Greenland to melt. Enhanced melting of Northern Greenland in a warm climate (Phys.org)—Princeton geoscientists Christopher Harig and Frederik Simons have been applying new methods to study the amount of ice melt in the Greenland ice sheet. They report in a paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that the rate is approximately 200 billion tons annually and is rising at a rate of approximately 9 billion tons per year. Social networks’ share of advertising spend in the UK will overtake television ad spend by 2020, according to stats published by eMarketer. The research firm said that come 2020, social network ad spending will account for 20% of all media ad spend in the UK, compared to 17.8% for broadcast TV.As it stands today, social networks’ share of ad spending has overtaken all traditional media formats in the UK, with the exception of TV, and is expected to grow throughout the year.eMarketer estimates that marketers in the UK will spend £3.3 billion on social network advertising in 2018, a 24% increase over 2017.It has also increased its social ad projections since its previous forecast due to diversification in the marketplace, which it says is driving up overall social network user rates and resulting in increased spend.“While Facebook has been losing teen users, Snapchat has been adding them,” said Bill Fisher, eMarketer’s UK senior analyst.“The result is a growing social media market, and one that advertisers are keen to utilise. Media-rich targeting options, with video a particularly big play, make platforms like Snapchat and Instagram especially attractive.”
