The possible impeachment of President Trump is gaining momentum in the US House. On Thursday, the House passed a Democratic resolution, which moves the impeachment process into a new phase, one that includes public hearings. The investigation led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been conducted behind closed doors on Capitol Hill, where multiple government officials and witnesses have been called to testify. But the hearings will now be brought into the public eye after the result of Thursday’s House vote. The measure drafted by House Democrats lays out the ground rules for public hearings, provides procedures for the president and his counsel to respond to evidence, and sets out the process for considering articles of impeachment in the Judiciary Committee and the full House.Democrats launched the impeachment inquiry last month after news broke of a whistleblower complaint regarding a phone call between President Trump and the Ukrainian president. The complaint alleges that Trump abused his official powers “to solicit interference” from Ukraine in the upcoming 2020 election, and the White House took steps to cover it up.President Trump confirmed the phone call but has adamantly denied any wrongdoing in the matter, slamming Democrats for creating another “Witch Hunt.”Shortly after the scandal went viral, the Trump administration released the unredacted, declassified transcript of the controversial conversation in which the Department of Justice concluded that he did not break the law.But US officials opted to move forward with the impeachment inquiry as it moves into a new phase as of Thursday.

Palm Beach County Sheriff’s officers dressed in riot gear faced off with protesters until nearly 2 a.m. Sunday in Wellington. The situation originally started as a peaceful rally for Black Lives Matter at Okeeheelee Park in West Palm Beach on Saturday afternoon. That is when three Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) deputies met with organizers to discuss a plan for the march. The goal was to keep the participants and the public safe on their way west on Forest Hill Boulevard heading to Highway 441.A Facebook live video captured by our TV news partner, WPTV NewsChannel 5, shows that PBSO agreed the organizers could use the sidewalk to travel to the major intersection in Wellington. However, participants discovered a lack of sidewalks along Forest Hill Boulevard shortly thereafter. At that point, rally leaders moved the event into the right lane of the street.A statement from PBSO says, “The protesters failed to comply with several orders to stay out of the roadway.” That is when the tension began.According to The Palm Beach Post, the protesters were greeted by officers in riot gear as they approached the Olympia neighborhood. The standoff ended up lasting for hours, and created traffic closures in the area.PBSO and protesters cleared the scene, and traffic began moving normally in the area.
13 October 2010 These are great days to be a South Africa-based multinational company. If nothing else, the 2010 Fifa World Cup shone a light on our ability to host a successful world-class sporting event – and demonstrated the achievements made in 16 years of democracy. I have lived and worked out of Johannesburg for the last three years, after 30 years’ business experience across 25 countries and five continents. This allows me to appreciate what those who haven’t had the opportunity to work in South Africa cannot, and what some local business leaders also find difficult to grasp.Legacy of apartheid Yes, South Africa has problems. With its history, how could it be otherwise? Most citizens are concerned about crime, even though it seems to be on the decrease. But in my experience people are even more concerned about our future direction, particularly opportunities for their children. A system built during apartheid for the support of a 10% minority will invariably struggle as it gears to provide for the majority, without depriving the previously advantaged. This is both a herculean and sensitive pathway for us to navigate. Undoing the apartheid legacy is still a subject of debate. The solution must be in repairing the damage in a way that supports relatively strong economic growth, so as to eradicate widespread race-based poverty, the ultimate consequence of apartheid. Growth strategies require complex trade-offs and value judgments.Passionate debate The remarkable thing is how South Africans have gone about grappling with these difficult questions. No country debates its policy issues more passionately. So, for example, when the ruling African National Congress’s youth league calls for the nationalisation of mines, the response from their seniors is cool, considered and rational, while also conscious that sensible solutions to deep, racially-based economic inequalities are needed. Indeed, the mining industry itself is encouraged to participate in these debates, even though it is seen as having colluded in the apartheid system. Much of 2010 has seen rigorous engagement between the government, the established mining sector, organised labour and emerging black mining businesses seeking better paths to transformation while recognising their common interest in the sector’s profitability and growth. That process is not complete, but there are signs that a balance will be found, continuing the country’s happy culture of constructive internal engagement developed in the 20 years since political parties were unbanned and political prisoners such as Nelson Mandela released.Political support The political support for the mining industry is as good as anything I have seen anywhere. Contrast, for example, the South African government’s decision to delay a new mining royalty regime because of the global financial crisis, with the punitive tax laws passed by the Australian government. Similarly, political support for mining in the US is somewhat more fragmented than in South Africa. Yes, the government is taking an increasingly tough line on safety and the environment. But that is their job, and these are areas where the industry has work to do. There have been one or two worrying regulatory decisions on mineral rights, but we are not unlike many jurisdictions where those with the best lawyer benefit from weaknesses in legislation. The key is that we recognise and correct our weaknesses – this has been our history. The nature of conversations between business and trade unions is also refreshing. While unions sound uncompromising to the unfamiliar ear, the focus is invariably on finding solutions to issues in which we have common interests, such as occupational safety. Even wage negotiations, while tough, are aimed at finding mutually acceptable solutions. These conversations are far more difficult in “developed” jurisdictions. South Africa is remarkable in its ability to innovate from within. It is the only country to successfully stage three major global sporting events – the cricket, rugby and soccer world cups. To be so consistently successful points to more than luck. Mark Cutifani is CEO of the multinational AngloGold Ashanti mining company. It was a great hit but he shouldn’t have been allowed to get the shot away.”Two or three of that line up won’t be at the club come the start of pre-season.”I don’t want to name names but we all know who they are. Monday night underlined that they need to be replaced.”Klopp gave an opportunity to some senior pros who have been waiting for their chance but they wasted it.”I didn’t see players showing they were willing to run through a brick wall for the club. They played within themselves and that’s not good enough.”Hoever and fellow youngsters Curtis Jones and Rafa Camacho needed help but they got very little.”You certainly couldn’t attach any blame to the young lads. They tried their hardest but they were let down by senior players who didn’t give their all.”

Dan Cohen AUTHOR Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) filed cloture Thursday on the conference report for the fiscal 2016 defense authorization bill, setting up a procedural vote to limit debate most likely on Tuesday.Earlier on Thursday, the House adopted the conference report for the legislation, H.R. 1735, but not with enough votes to override a threatened veto of the bill by President Obama. House members voted 270-156 to advance the conference report, with Democratic opposition sufficient enough to sustain a veto. The House would need a two-thirds majority — at least 290 votes — to override the promised veto from the president. While the Obama administration opposes numerous provisions in the compromise legislation — including its failure to approve a BRAC round in 2017 and restrictions on closing the prison at Guantánamo Bay — the most significant objection stems from the measure’s reliance on DOD’s overseas contingency operations (OCO) account to sidestep the Budget Control Act spending caps. The bill would authorize $612 billion in national security spending, the same amount the White House requested. The measure leaves the discretionary budget caps in place, and authorizes only $496 billion for DOD’s base budget. To make up the shortfall, it shifts $38 billion in operation and maintenance funds from the base budget to DOD’s OCO account, which is not subject to the caps. The bill would authorize a total of $89 billion for that account. The White House has demanded that Congress lift the caps on both defense and non-defense spending, and return the $38 billion to DOD’s base budget.Much of the debate prior to the House vote focused on the veto threat, which Republicans criticized given that the total amount of spending authorized under the bill equals the administration’s budget request, reported CQ.“Frankly whether you call it base funding, OCO funding or pumpernickel it doesn’t matter. It is money that goes to the troops,” said House Armed Services Chair Mac Thornberry (R-Texas), who accused the White House of “playing politics.”The committee’s ranking Democrat, Adam Smith (Wash.), acknowledged the legislation was “by and large a good bill,” but said the GOP budget framework evaded the larger issue of the discretionary spending caps.“Is this good for our country? Is it good for our troops?” Smith said. “I don’t believe that it is.”

15Mar Rep. Hauck bill addressing drone use passes House committee vote The House Committee on Communications and Technology this week advanced a bill proposed by state Rep. Roger Hauck of Union Township as part of a larger legislative package establishing needed state guidelines for drones.Hauck’s bill, House Bill 5495, highlights facilities where use of unmanned aircraft systems will be prohibited under state law. The language refers to knowingly and intentionally interfering with “key facilities” as defined in the Michigan Penal Code, including manufacturing plants, electric or natural gas utilities, correctional sites and telecommunication facilities. Companion legislation sponsored by state Rep. Jim Lower of Cedar Lake offers a sentencing guideline making intentional drone interference with a key facility up to a four-year felony.“Over time, improved education will lead to more educated use,” Hauck said. “My bill allows for a lot of prosecutor discretion because of how new this technology is. Knowledge and intent will be two big things within that discretion. A surveyor who flies a drone over a highway or high voltage power line may not know that he is breaking a law. This proposal improves safety, offers clear deterrents for bad actors, grants leeway for hobbyists and puts rules on the books that can be better recognized and accepted the longer we have this technology.”A 2016 Federal Aviation Administration report estimated 2.5 million drones were being operated nationwide for a variety of purposes, including hobbyist and commercial. That number could grow to a projected 7 million by 2020.A 27-member Unmanned Aircraft Systems Task Force, appointed by Gov. Rick Snyder, began work in April 2017 to develop statewide recommendations on the operation, use and regulation of unmanned aircraft in Michigan. The bills offered largely reflect the task force’s policy recommendations.“There needs to be some definition here where the letter of the law could be clearly identified regarding drone usage,” Hauck said. “There are a lot of hobbyists and recreational drone users and not a lot of education or information on where you can and can’t use them.”The bills within the package, HBs 5494-98, advance to the House floor for further consideration.PHOTO INFORMATION: State Rep.
