Officers to begin ticketing Florida motorists who text and drive starting Jan. 1

first_imgFlorida Highway Patrol troopers and other law enforcement agencies will be officially issuing tickets for texting while driving starting Wednesday, Jan. 1.A new law signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis that will make texting while driving a primary offense instead of a secondary offense will be in full effect come 2020.The texting and driving law went into effect in July in phases. During the first phase, officers would only issue warnings. Then, in October, a ban went into effect on holding a phone while driving through a school or work zone.Well now, officers will  issue tickets starting with a $30 fine plus court costs. If a second violation occurs within five years, the fine doubles to $60 and court costs increase to over $150. Violators will also have points added to their license. Thanks to the new law, texting while driving is now a primary offense, allowing officers to pull drivers over for texting.last_img read more

Reaching Out to the Homeless

first_imgRED BANK – At times, some of the homeless people in theTwo River area camp out in empty buildings, bus stop shelters or underneath therailway bridge over the Navesink. Homeless Connect Incold winter months they might pass the night sitting in emergency rooms andpolice station lobbies. During times of severe weather, when a Code Blue alertis declared by the county Office of Emergency Management, they now have theoption of sleeping in a warming center in either Red Bank or Asbury Park. Thecounty’s Homeless Connect event is timed to complement the national 2019 Point-In-Timesurvey, a census of all persons in sheltering programs (emergency shelter, transitional housing and safe haven programs), as well as the unshelteredpopulation identified on the night of the count. Warming Centers Othersites included St. Mark’s Soup Kitchen in Keansburg, Jersey Shore RescueMission in Asbury Park and New Beginnings Agape Christian Center in Freehold. Thewarming center is currently only open to men. Homeless women seeking shelterfrom the cold are offered transportation to a facility in Asbury Park. Wheninside, guests are provided hygiene packages and can take a shower in one oftwo washing areas. They can also change out of wet clothing. Butthe Rev. Darlene Wilson, Pilgrim Baptist’s community outreach minister, hasnoticed fewer people coming to Homeless Connect. Weirsaid about 30 homeless or underprivileged adults ventured to the PilgrimBaptist Church seeking food, clothing and various services like free healthscreenings and employment assistance. Later that afternoon, even more stopped in. “Wehad a lot less people join us today than in previous years,” said Wilson. “In aperfect world, if we saw nobody walk through these doors it would be awonderful thing, because it would mean there are no homeless people. But on theother hand, given the state the country is in right now, it pains my heart toeven think it’s a possibility that someone may be scared to come through thesedoors.” center_img Accordingto the Jan. 23, 2018 count, a total of 228 households, including 335 individuals, were experiencing homelessness in Monmouth County on that day. She believes some members of the at-risk population had sent friends or family in their place to collect donated goods. “Imet a man today who came in for some warm clothes and blankets. When I askedwhere he was staying, he told me he had a sleeping bag that he sets up in acemetery nearby,” said Kathleen Weir, the director of Monmouth County Divisionof Social Services. “These people are out there living among us and they needour help.” OnWednesday, Jan. 23, Weir and others were trying to meet, document and helphomeless people at the annual Project Homeless Connect event at Pilgrim BaptistChurch on Shrewsbury Avenue in Red Bank. The2018 totals showed an increase over 2017. In that survey, 184 households and299 individuals were experiencing homelessness. “Ourunderprivileged people may not be coming out to this event like they used to,but when I see nine people coming to the warming center last night, you knowthese people are out there. That’s just nine men. How many more do we not evenknow about? It’s our mission to reach them. And if this event doesn’t work,we’ll find another way.”last_img read more

We can’t worry about what they’re doing.”The Cavs dropped their 10th in a row to finish 19-63, the fourth-worst record in franchise history and just the fifth time they’ve failed to win at least 20.Cleveland again played without star forward Kevin Love, whose season was sabotaged early by a toe injury that required surgery and altered everything for the Cavs. Love’s situation made things even tougher on the Cavs, who initially believed they could compete while recovering from the loss of James as a free agent for the second time. Now the focus turns to coach Larry Drew’s future and next month’s NBA draft lottery.Rookie Collin Sexton scored 18 points and had a season-high 10 assists for the Cavs. He also joined Larry Bird (1979-80) and Stephen Curry (2009-10) as the only rookies in league history to average at least 16 points while making over 40% of their 3-pointers and 80% of their free throws. There were some positives for the Cavs and none bigger than Sexton, who shrugged off a slow start and came on in the season’s second half.“Everything,” Sexton said when asked what changed in him from Game 1 to 82. “It’s a whole change. Coming into the league people said I couldn’t shoot and stuff like that, but I just kept working on it through the season and it got better and better.”If the Hornets get back to the postseason for the first time in three years, Walker will be the reason. The three-time All-Star, who is scheduled to become a free agent on July 1, is averaging 34.4 points in his last five games.DREW DONE? It may be a few days before Drew knows his fate.He guided the Cavs through a turbulent, injury-filled season that ended with uncertainty. Before the game, Drew said, “Let’s hope not” when asked if this season would be his last. The 61-year-old, who replaced good Tyronn Lue after six games, was noncommittal when he was asked if wanted to return as Cleveland’s coach.“Um, I really don’t want to get into that part of it right now,” said Drew, who plans to meet with general manager Koby Altman. “As tough as the season was, I still really enjoyed coming to work every day.”TIP-INSHornets: F Michael Kidd-Gilchrist was not with the team for the second straight game because of personal reasons. … C Cody Zeller was again out with a sore left knee. … Walker enters Wednesday’s game — perhaps the final one of his career with Charlotte — as the franchise leader in points and made 3-pointers, field goals and free throws.Cavaliers: Love played 13 minutes on Sunday as a salute to close friend Channing Frye, who is retiring. a month agoLee Clark: Newcastle need Almiron goal; Noble tribute; Souness right on Man Utd

first_imgLee Clark: Newcastle need Almiron goal; Noble tribute; Souness right on Man Utdby Lee Clarka month agoSend to a friendShare the loveWithout being disrespectful to Brighton, because every team you come up against in the Premier League are tough opponents, but if Newcastle are playing teams in the same situation as themselves at St. James’ Park, you expect them to be on the front foot, be positive and taking the game on.I think Steve Bruce would have wanted his team to play that way. He certainly wouldn’t have wanted the 71 per cent possession to 29 per cent possession ratio in favour of the away team. In the first-half Brighton were totally dominant and in saying that if you look over the course of the game Newcastle probably had as many clear cut chances as Brighton. The chance that Miguel Almiron had is one that a striker with confidence puts down the side of the goalkeeper into the corner of the goal. Instead he just fired it straight down the goalkeeper’s throat. That’s a player who is trying desperately hard to break this goalscoring duck. He’s got such a brilliant work ethic for the team, the reports you get from the training ground is that he works ever so hard on the pitch and I think everybody that is associated with the club are willing Almiron on to get this goal because I think if he gets the first one, his confidence levels will rise and he’ll go on a bit of a run.I know Brighton had their own chances and they were the dominant team. So I think all in all it was a disappointing performance and a disappointing weekend because I think Steve Bruce and his staff were probably expecting three points. The positive thing out of it is that they haven’t lost the game, they’ve kept the clean sheet that will help the defenders and the goalkeeper and then obviously they’ve got a point from a performance that probably didn’t warrant it. The problem they’ve got now is they’ve got extremely tough league games in the next three. They’ve got to start to picking up points because it’s getting really tight at the bottom there in terms of there being five or six teams where one or two wins can get you out of the relegation zone and on the other hand two or three losses puts you right in there and gives you confidence issues.DELIGHTED FOR ANDY, BUT…I was absolutely delighted to see Andy Carroll back in Newcastle colours, but the problem we’ve got is everyone is hanging their hopes on him because of the season we’ve had. It’s a big call because of his injury problems, he’s not going to be straight into the firing line in terms of starting games. It’s going to have to be a gradual process with Andy working up his match fitness. He got 10-15 minutes against Brighton and I think Steve will be trying to use him from the bench and maybe giving him a little bit longer with each appearance, then seeing how long it will take before he believes he is ready to start. But Andy has obviously lifted the mood around the club and around the city. All I’d warn is that there’s a lot of pressure on him because everyone is hanging their hopes on him to be the one that turns things around for the club.HUDDERSFIELDI’ve seen the two games since Danny Cowley took over and I totally agree with his sentiments from what he said after those games: it’s a club that has forgot how to win. It’s been that long. It’s a group of players, I think he used the words, that play the scoreboard rather than the game, so even when they go ahead they are worrying about getting pegged back, and if they get overtaken it seems to effect their mentality and confidence. I thought for an hour they did great against West Bromwich Albion, it’s always a tough place to go the Hawthorns. But then as soon as West Brom got back to 2-2 there looked like there’d be only one winner and that ended up being the case.Danny has come out and said he feels the team isn’t fit enough to play the way he wants to play for 94, 95 minutes. It’s a really tough period for the club. The manager is trying to get his ideas across, it’s not going to happen overnight, especially if he wants to change so many things. Reports stated that ten days leading up to the game Danny gave the players so much information, so you could worry about it being overload for them. You just hope that they can get this first win sooner rather than later because the longer it goes on the longer it will just frighten the life out of everyone in terms of fans, players, staff, because everyone starts losing their confidence and wondering where the next result is coming from.SOUNESS WAS RIGHT ABOUT MAN UTDI think there is a good chance that it could be the worst ever Manchester United squad in the Premier League era without a doubt. I was really disappointed with their performance against West Ham United. The three guys in the Sky Sports studio – Graeme Souness, Roy Keane and Jose Mourinho – know a hell of a lot about winning major trophies and what it takes, and they were quite scathing and rightly so on the performance level that Man Utd delivered against West Ham. I thought it was quite inept, quite flat to be honest. All you expect from a Man Utd team, even in the games that they’ve lost, you expect them to be up and at you, creating numerous chances, playing with lots of a tempo, lots of speed, hitting you on the break, you’re always worried even when you’re in front that they can come back and hurt you because of their pace. They just look like a run of the mill Premier League team at the moment. People are talking about them breaking into the top-four, I would say that you’ve got to worry about them getting into the top-six at this moment in time, never mind the top-four, because I think their performance levels are quite average at best. NOBLE RIGHT WHERE HE WANTS TO BEThe answer to Mark Noble joining a bigger club is tough when you’re playing for the club that you love and support and you’re playing every week and you’re classed as one of the main men. He’s been a terrific ambassador for West Ham. You can see he loves the club. When they’ve had the times of turmoil and disappointment, he’s always been the one that steps up and comes to the fore, whether that has to be communicating with the fans or on the pitch. He’s the leader for those West Ham supporters and their fans – and the group of players who are in the dressing room would understand what the club means to play for West Ham because of Mark Noble. Am I surprised he hasn’t been in the England set-up? Yeah I probably am. But in terms of playing for a big club, I don’t think he’d be too bothered or interested in that. He’s living his dream so I don’t think moving anywhere else would’ve been of any interest to him. TagsTransfersOpinionAbout the authorLee ClarkShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

The Chiefs Defense Is Worse Than Their Offense Is Great

Patrick Mahomes and company have routinely jumped out to big leads, outscoring opponents by a league-leading 46 points in the first quarter. That has made opposing offenses play with urgency and desperation — two qualities that will generate yardage quickly in the NFL.3This was not a valid excuse Sunday night, when the Patriots racked up 500 yards and 43 points while leading the majority of the game. The good news for Andy Reid and the Chiefs is that every team that appears on the list above eventually got better. On average, they allowed 81.72 percent of their yardage per game for the remainder of the season. If the Chiefs enjoy a similar regression, they would allow 382.6 yards per game, which through Sunday of Week 6 would rank 23nd. That’s like being The Steel Curtain compared with where they are.Kansas City doesn’t have to look far for an example of how to rebound on defense. The Patriots last year had allowed 2,644 yards (440.7 per game) at the same stage of the season — good for fifth worst since 1940 at the time. They improved that to 321.2 for the rest of the year and coasted to the Super Bowl. (Granted, that’s when they reverted to their prior form and lost 41-33 to the Eagles despite posting 613 yards of offense and never punting. The Pats’ defense gave up 5384Our favorite number. total yards.)Or maybe Kansas City doesn’t even need to improve on defense. Mahomes is a big play waiting to happen, and the Chiefs have firepower everywhere on the field — from the backfield with Kareem Hunt, to middle of the field where Travis Kelce roams, to far downfield where Tyreek Hill hauls in Mahomes’s rockets. Plus defense seems optional this year, with the league on a record pace since 1950 in points, yards, yards per play and yards per pass play — and even yards per rush has never been higher. In other words, in 2018, NFL teams generally can’t stop anyone or anything.Check out our latest NFL predictions. The most explosive one? Whomever they happen to be playing.Through six games, the Chiefs are the worst defense ever measured in yards allowed.1Since 1940. They’ve yielded 2,809 yards, or 468.2 per game, and are on pace for 7,491 yards allowed over the full season. That would smash the record set by the 2012 Saints, the only team in history to give up more than 7,000 yards. No team that’s allowed even 6,600 yards in a season has ever finished with a winning record. For all their offensive firepower, the Chiefs have somehow gained nearly 300 fewer yards than opponents (2,511). They are more efficient in yards per play — but not by much. Their opponents’ 6.56 average gain is the seventh most through six games since the 1970 merger. But defenses in 2018 are struggling leaguewide: Two clubs this year are actually worse in yards allowed per play than the Chiefs — the Buccaneers (who have played just five games) and the Raiders.Yes, the Kansas City offense is so good that the Chiefs are still 5-1. They’ve already won two games this year when they gave up more than 500 yards, while every other team in the 500 Club since 2000 is 63-186-3. They have allowed at least five entire football fields worth of offense three times — putting them easily on pace to break the single-season record of five by the 1950 Colts.2The Colts hit that mark in only 12 regular-season games. Only seven other teams ever gave up four 500-plus-yard games in a single season. Could any team that’s so seemingly helpless on defense overcome such profound weakness on that side of the ball? Or could their defense somehow improve? 49ers20052,7166,259452.7354.3.167.250 read more

Watch Elon Musks Second Attempt to Land a SpaceX Rocket

first_img 2 min read Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box. UPDATE: The launch has been postponed — again. SpaceX says it is now scheduled for Wednesday, February 11, at 6:03 p.m. ET.Trailblazing tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has something to prove. Earlier this month, Musk’s SpaceX launched a Falcon 9 rocket and attempted to land it on a floating platform in the Atlantic ocean. The 14-story-tall rocket took off without a hitch, but it botched its landing, bouncing off the deck of the barge.”Close, but no cigar,” is how Musk described the failed landing. And for any entrepreneur worth his salt, “close” simply isn’t good enough.SpaceX will try again today. At 6:10 p.m. EST, a new Falcon 9 rocket will lift off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Like last time, the rocket will soar up into space, then use GPS tracking to land itself smoothly on the platform. In case you’re not familiar, SpaceX is a company Musk founded in 2002 to “revolutionize space technology, with the ultimate goal of enabling people to live on other planets.”Related: Google, Fidelity Invest $1 Billion in SpaceX to Spread Internet Access Across the GlobeIn addition to launching and hopefully landing the rocket, it will carry the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) “Deep Space Climate Observatory.” The instrument will detach once the pair reach space. It will be used to monitor solar winds generated by the sun that can cause disruption of telecommunications and GPS on Earth. You can watch the launch event right here at 6:10 p.m.:Related: Elon Musk to Build ‘Hyperloop’ Track, Likely in Texas Free Webinar | Sept. 9: The Entrepreneur’s Playbook for Going Globalcenter_img Register Now » February 8, 2015last_img read more

Mozilla pledges to match donations to Tor crowdfunding campaign up to 500000

first_imgToday, the Tor Project launched its annual end-of-year crowdfunding campaign ‘Strength in Numbers’ and it’s receiving support from Firefox maker Mozilla. The Tor network disguises a users identity by moving their traffic across different Tor servers, and encrypting that traffic so it isn’t traced back to them, thus “ensuring privacy and online freedom”. Started back in 2016, Tor’s Crowdfunding campaigns allow the community to realize the opportunity that Tor promises. Their vision to deliver significant advancements in the hidden services field aims to draw contributions from donors, further facilitating their participation in shaping the evolution of hidden services. Tor announced that Mozilla will match donations up to a total of $500,000. This means a significant portion of the donations Tor receives during this campaign will be automatically be doubled. This is not the first time that Mozilla, Tor’s long term ally, has supported its network. Its partnership with Tor helped the organization raise over $400,000 from a similar campaign. Mozilla’s support has been beneficial to Tor, who began soliciting ‘crowdfunded’ donations in 2015 to offset its reliance on government grants. 2018 has been a busy year for the Tor network who have always aimed to take a stand against restrictive online practices and foster privacy and online freedom to its users. In wake of the same, they build the Tor Browser 8 based on Firefox’s 2017 Quantum structure and the Tor Browser for Android  to reach out to users in nations that have tightened restrictions on free expression and accessing the open web and not much freedom is provided to its citizens. Looks like Mozilla has given them a good head start to continue their work in 2019. Tor plans to do the following in 2019 with community support: Improve the capacity, modularization, and scalability of the Tor network Make improvements and integrations into other privacy and circumvention tools easier and reliable Better test  and design solutions around internet censorship Strengthen the development of Tor Browser for Android And much more! first_img – NEW WARNING FROM DOUG CASEY – READ IMMEDIATELY Over the years, Doug Casey’s forecasts have caused a lot of controversy… Like during the peak of the dot-com bubble when he warned a major crash in tech stocks was near… Or near 2008 when he warned America’s financial structure would be threatened with collapse. Critics called him “offensive,” “brash,” “irreverent.” But Doug was spot-on, every time. Not only that… Folks who heeded his warnings had the opportunity to make rare and extraordinary gains of 770%, 1,333%, and more. Yet, those could be a drop in the bucket if his latest controversial forecast about President Trump is right. Editor’s note: The “Greater Depression” has started… Yesterday, Casey Research founder Doug Casey compared what happened in the 1930s to what’s going on today. Below, he breaks down more of these likely differences… By Doug Casey, founder, Casey Research PRICES 1930s Prices dropped radically because billions of dollars of inflationary currency were wiped out through the stock market crash, bond defaults, and bank failures. The government, however, somehow equated the high prices of the inflationary ’20s with prosperity and attempted to prevent a fall in prices by such things as slaughtering livestock, dumping milk in the gutter, and enacting price supports. Since the collapse wiped out money faster than it could be created, the government felt the destruction of real wealth was a more effective way to raise prices. In other words, if you can’t increase the supply of money, decrease the supply of goods. Nonetheless, the 1930s depression was a deflationary collapse, a time when currency became worth more and prices dropped. This is probably the most confusing thing to most Americans since they assume—as a result of that experience—that “depression” means “deflation.” It’s also perhaps the biggest single difference between this depression and the last one. Today Prices could drop, as they did the last time, but the amount of power the government now has over the economy is far greater than what was the case 80 years ago. Instead of letting the economy cleanse itself by allowing the financial markets to collapse, governments will probably bail out insolvent banks, create mortgages wholesale to prop up real estate, and central banks will buy bonds to keep their prices from plummeting. All of these actions mean that the total money supply will grow enormously. Trillions will be created to avoid deflation. If you find men selling apples on street corners, it won’t be for 5 cents apiece, but $5 apiece. But there won’t be a lot of apple sellers because of welfare, nor will there be a lot of apples because of price controls. Consumer prices will probably skyrocket as a result, and the country will have an inflationary depression. Unlike the 1930s, when people who held dollars were king, by the end of the Greater Depression, people with dollars will be wiped out. THE SOCIETY 1930s The world was largely rural or small-town. Communications were slow, but people tended to trust the media. The government exercised considerable moral suasion, and people tended to support it. The business of the country was business, as Calvin Coolidge said, and men who created wealth were esteemed. All told, if you were going to have a depression, it was a rather stable environment for it; despite that, however, there were still plenty of riots, marches, and general disorder. Today The country is now urban and suburban, and although communications are rapid, there’s little interpersonal contact. The media are suspect. The government is seen more as an adversary or an imperial ruler than an arbitrator accepted by a consensus of concerned citizens. Businessmen are viewed as unscrupulous predators who take advantage of anyone weak enough to be exploited. A major financial smashup in today’s atmosphere could do a lot more than wipe out a few naives in the stock market and unemploy some workers, as occurred in the ’30s; some sectors of society are now time bombs. It’s hard to say, for instance, what third- and fourth-generation welfare recipients are going to do when the going gets really tough. THE WAY PEOPLE WORK 1930s Relatively slow transportation and communication localized economic conditions. The U.S. itself was somewhat insulated from the rest of the world, and parts of the U.S. were fairly self-contained. Workers were mostly involved in basic agriculture and industry, creating widgets and other tangible items. There wasn’t a great deal of specialization, and that made it easier for someone to move laterally from one occupation into the next, without extensive retraining, since people were more able to produce the basics of life on their own. Most women never joined the workforce, and the wife in a marriage acted as a “backup” system should the husband lose his job. Today The whole world is interdependent, and a war in the Middle East or a revolution in Africa can have a direct and immediate effect on a barber in Chicago or Krakow. Since the whole economy is centrally controlled from Washington, a mistake there can be a national disaster. People generally aren’t in a position to roll with the punches as more than half the people in the country belong to what is known as the “service economy.” That means, in most cases, they’re better equipped to shuffle papers than make widgets. Even “necessary” services are often terminated when times get hard. Specialization is part of what an advanced industrial economy is all about, but if the economic order changes radically, it can prove a liability. THE FINANCIAL MARKETS 1930s The last depression is identified with the collapse of the stock market, which lost over 90% of its value from 1929 to 1933. A secure bond was the best possible investment as interest rates dropped radically. Commodities plummeted, reducing millions of farmers to near subsistence levels. Since most real estate was owned outright and taxes were low, a drop in price didn’t make a lot of difference unless you had to sell. Land prices plummeted, but since people bought it to use, not unload to a greater fool, they didn’t usually have to sell. Today This time, stocks—and especially commodities—are likely to explode on the upside as people panic into them to get out of depreciating dollars in general and bonds in particular. Real estate will be—next to bonds—the most devastated single area of the economy because no one will lend money long term. And real estate is built on the mortgage market, which will vanish. Everybody who invests in this depression thinking that it will turn out like the last one will be very unhappy with the results. Being aware of the differences between the last depression and this one makes it a lot easier to position yourself to minimize losses and maximize profits. So much for the differences. The crucial, obvious, and most important similarity, however, is that most people’s standard of living will fall dramatically. The Greater Depression has started. Most people don’t know it because they can neither confront the thought nor understand the differences between this one and the last. As a climax approaches, many of the things that you’ve built your life around in the past are going to change and change radically. The ability to adjust to new conditions is the sign of a psychologically healthy person. Look for the opportunity side of the crisis. The Chinese symbol for “crisis” is a combination of two other symbols—one for danger and one for opportunity. The dangers that society will face in the years ahead are regrettable, but there’s no point in allowing anxiety, frustration, or apathy to overcome you. Face the future with courage, curiosity, and optimism rather than fear. You can be a winner, and if you plan carefully, you will be. The great period of change will give you a chance to regain control of your destiny. And that in itself is the single most important thing in life. This depression can give you that opportunity; it’s one of the many ways the Greater Depression can be a very good thing for both you as an individual and society as a whole. Editor’s note: America is about to enter a crisis far more severe than what we saw in 2008–2009. It could all start after Trump’s inauguration and could change everything… in sudden, unexpected ways. This is exactly why Doug and his team put together a time-sensitive video explaining how it could all go down. Click here to watch it now.last_img read more
