Topics: Casino & games Finance Company boosted by Snaitech purchase and stabilisation of Asian performance Casino & games Playtech on track for full-year target after Asian recovery 12th November 2018 | By contenteditor Playtech has said it remains on track to achieve its full-year earnings targets after it was able to post results “consistent with expectations” in the third quarter. In a trading update for the period since June 30th, the firm said trading in its B2B gaming division continued in line with the trends reported in its half-year results, with strong revenue growth in non-Asian markets. Playtech said revenue from Asia has stabilised at an annualised run-rate of around €150m (£131.4m/$169m). This followed a difficult first half which saw the supplier’s net profit drop 34%, blamed on a crackdown on gambling syndicates in Malaysia and increased competition in a number of other territories throughout the region. The firm’s B2C gaming division also carried over positive momentum from the first half into Q3, with the division, comprising a number of assets including Italian operator Snaitech and the UK-facing Sun Bingo, trading in line with expectations. However, reports in the Financial Times suggest that Playtech’s Italian business may suffer should the country’s government push ahead with plans to significantly reduce the number of amusement with prizes (AWP) and video lottery terminals (VLTs) permitted. Its B2B Playtech BGT Sports business may also suffer in the UK, where the maximum stake on fixed odd betting terminals will be slashed from £100 to £2 in October of next year.Elsewhere, Playtech said underlying KPIs for its TradeTech financial division were largely positive during the reporting period, but noted market movements favoured customers particularly in September and October. As a result of its activity in the quarter, Playtech expects to report EBTIDA of between €320m and €360m for the full year. Playtech also said its financial position remains strong, with the company completing a €530m bond offering to fund the Snaitech acquistion, and raising around €200m from the sale of its 10% stake in financial trading business Plus500.The firm also appointed Ian Penrose, former CEO of Sportech, as a non-executive director in Q3. The committee will look at whether legalising gambling would lead to significant additional tax revenue for the state. In addition, the committee will also look at the pros and cons of legalising horse racing and pari-mutuel wagering. In particular it will look at the potential benefits in terms of tax revenue and the impact on Georgia’s horse breeding, raising and training industry. It will comprise 11 members, including the President Pro Tempore of the Senate, alongside the Senate majority leader, majority whip and majority caucus chair. Also joining the committee will be the chairs of the Senate Economic Development and Tourism and Regulated Industries and Utilities committees.Either the chief executive of the Georgia Lottery Corporation or an individual designated to sit in their place will also join the committee, as will four member of the Senate appointed by its president. One of these four will be selected to chair the committee. The resolution establishing the committee passed yesterday (April 2), on the final day of Georgia’s 2019 legislative session. While its members are yet to be appointed, they will have until December 1, 2019 to conduct their research and deliver any reports, including legislative suggestions, after which the committee is abolished.Earlier in the 2019 legislative session, House Resolution 380 was filed to give the Georgia General Assembly the power to establish a framework under which gaming facilities could apply for a licence to offer sports betting services. The proposal is currently with the House Committee on Regulated Industries for further scrutiny.Image: Michael Rivera Email Address

Our 6 ‘Best Buys Now’ Shares “This Stock Could Be Like Buying Amazon in 1997” Buying dividend shares to make a passive income may seem to be a risky move after the stock market’s recent crash. However, a lack of appeal from other income-producing assets such as cash and bonds may mean that dividend shares offer an impressive long-term outlook.Furthermore, with many income stocks offering dividend growth potential as the world economy recovers, they could produce attractive total returns when purchased as part of a diverse portfolio of equities.5G is here – and shares of this ‘sleeping giant’ could be a great way for you to potentially profit!According to one leading industry firm, the 5G boom could create a global industry worth US$12.3 TRILLION out of thin air…And if you click here we’ll show you something that could be key to unlocking 5G’s full potential…Relative appealThe uncertain outlook for the world economy may mean that the yields available on dividend shares are relatively attractive. Low interest rates could be set to remain in place over the coming years as policymakers seek to offer support to the economy. The result may prove to be low income returns from assets that would normally form part of an income investor’s portfolio, such as cash and bonds. In fact, the returns from cash and bonds could prove to be lower than inflation in some cases. This may reduce your spending power and make the task of generating a passive income more challenging over the long run.Dividend growth potentialAs well as offering a higher income return in the current year than cash and bonds, dividend shares may offer a growing revenue stream over the long run.Certainly, many industries face an uncertain period at the present time. Factors such as rising unemployment and weak consumer confidence across many of the world’s major economies may cause challenging trading conditions that result in lower dividends than would normally be the case. However, over the long run, the track record of the world economy shows that it has been successful in overcoming its difficult periods to post positive growth. Therefore, the chances of dividend growth returning over the coming years appears to be high – even in industries that are currently facing weak operating conditions due to the coronavirus pandemic.Dividend growth could further enhance your passive income in the long run. It may also make the difference in returns between dividend shares and other income-producing assets much wider, since low interest rates may remain in place over the next few years to stimulate the economy.A diverse portfolio of dividend sharesBuying a range of dividend shares could be a means of reducing your risks and producing a more reliable passive income. Having exposure to different economies and a range of sectors can lower your reliance on a small number of companies from which to generate a regular passive income. With the cost of buying shares now lower than it ever has been, it could be a good time to spread your capital across a variety of dividend shares. It could lead to high income returns, as well as dividend growth as the world economy gradually recovers. See all posts by Peter Stephens

But this does not apply to Israeli and Palestinian journalists. Also, Hebron, where a large military operation is going on, remains out of bounds to the media. _____________________________________________________________06.27.2002 – Six Palestinian towns declared “closed military zones” and six Palestinian journalists still in prisonJournalists have once more been banned from six autonomous West Bank Palestinian towns (Bethlehem, Nablus, Ramallah (photo), Jenin, Tulkarem and Qalqiliya) that have again been declared “closed military zones” by the Israeli army since the latest Palestinian suicide bombings in Israel.”We cannot help thinking that, rather than protecting journalists, this measure is aimed at conducting military operations hidden from public scrutiny,” said Reporters Without Borders secretary-general Robert Ménard. “Especially since journalists based in these towns are also prevented from working by the curfew. Once again, these measures risk generating all kinds of rumours and disinformation.”Reporters Without Borders also called on the Israeli authorities to immediately release six Palestinian journalists who have been held for the past two months. “These arrests were completely arbitrary,” Ménard said. “If they have done anything wrong, then the authorities should say what it is. No evidence has been presented to show they had any link to a terrorist organisation. We remain extremely concerned about their fate because they are being held in very bad conditions.”The six journalists – Khalid Ali Zwawi and Maher el-Dessuki, of the Ramallah-based Al-Quds Educational TV, Kamal Ali Jbeil, of the daily Al-Quds, Hussam Abu Alan (photo), a photographer for Agence France-Presse (AFP), Yusri el-Jamal, a Reuters sound man, and Ayman el-Kawasmi, head of a local radio station, El Horriya – were arrested between 15 and 30 April and placed in preventive detention for three months.Dessuki, Jbeil, Alan and Jamal are being held at the Ofer detention camp near Ramallah in harsh conditions, sleeping on the ground in tents with several hundred other prisoners. Alan needs special treatment for a head wound he received several years ago but has not been able to get it. On 19 June , the Israeli Military Court rejected applications for the immediate release of Jamal and Alan.Apart from the ban on journalists going to the six towns, press freedom violations are continuing. Malls, which have been suffering due to competition from online retailers even long before the COVID-19 pandemic, may help fill that need.“It’s up to the Westfields of the world and the huge shopping center owners of these enclosed malls to figure that out,” she said. “But it’s something worth exploring.”Meanwhile, malls are working to brand themselves as more than just collections of shops, but as entertainment destinations.“If you don’t make it entertaining to go shopping, you’re going to find yourself with no customers,” Carey said. “So you look at Old Pasadena, that is why there is heavy pedestrian traffic there — because it’s an entertainment source to go walk around, see what’s new.”Some of the changes brought on by the pandemic may be here to stay, Carey said. The demand for office space, for instance, may never be the same.

Two‐dimensional models are presented for the crustal structure of the Antarctic Peninsula, a Mesozoic‐Cenozoic magmatic arc on the southeast Pacific margin. The models are constrained by measured rock properties. The West Coast Magnetic Anomaly (WCMA) is caused by a zone of mafic plutons which is 70–150 km wide and over 1500 km long. In modelling of Bouguer anomalies, isostatic compensation is maintained by crustal thickness variations. The model Moho is deepest (35 km) beneath the mid‐Cretaceous axis of the arc and shallowest (<20 km) beneath a Late Cenozoic marginal basin. Positive isostatic residual gravity anomalies are associated with the WCMA and a mafic terrane in the Mesozoic accretionary complex. Three broad areas of consistent crustal structure are identified. The junctions of these areas are sinistral fault zones which displace the curvilinear magnetic, physiographic, and gravity patterns by several tens of kilometers.

The Caribbean Basin Security Initiative, or CBSI, launched in May 2010 seeks to strengthen Caribbean-U.S. security ties and reduce spill- over violence from successful drug eradication efforts elsewhere in the region. According to the U.S. State Department, CBSI complements the United States’ Mérida Initiative by providing equipment and training to support law enforcement and technical assistance to confront criminal organizations in Mexico, Central America, Dominican Republic and Haiti. Objectives for the 15 Caribbean Community, countries include counternarcotics, antitraffick- ing, gang prevention, education and combating government corruption. A sub-regional Military organization with the mission of contributing to the region’s security, development, and military integration, CFAC was founded by the presidents of El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua founded on November 12, 1997. It has sustained an ongoing and systematic effort of cooperation, coordination, and mutual support for the joint analysis of issues of common interest and providing an optimal level of defense against threats to democracy, peace, and freedom. By Dialogo October 19, 2015 “Our work focuses on jointly reflecting on the need for the Military to act in situations of armed conflict and missions to maintain public order,” said Pascal Pinot, the ICRC liaison to the Armed Forces and Security Forces of Central America. Lieutenant Colonel Sidney Marenco, FAES representative at the training, said these exercises demonstrate the ways illegal armed groups operate. The combat “We had the opportunity to learn details about how these groups are trying to move throughout Central America, threatening the security of our nations,” said Lt. Col. Marenco. “This exercise has allowed us to incorporate this knowledge in order to defend the civilian population from the threats they pose.” “When the population is able to see how we operate – as professionals who always aim to protect their rights without violating them – they then understand that we are not just prepared for a war,” said Dominican Republic Armed Forces representative Lieutenant Angelita Peña. “We are ready to protect them from serious threats such as the illegal armed groups.” “The officials have reaffirmed their understanding of human rights to protect civilians during operations against illegal armed groups,” said Brigadier General Mauricio Villacorta, director of the FAES Doctrine and Military Education Command. “This technological exercise also helped strengthen command and control, decision-making, and operational planning.” Officers from four Armies of Central America and the Dominican Republic recently tested their ability to make tactical and operational decisions during clashes with illegal armed groups by using simulators at the Computerized Tactical Training Center (CETAC) of the Armed Forces of El Salvador (FAES). Forging ties with the civilian population There, from September 21-25, forty participants from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic attended the Conference of Central American Armed Forces’ (CFAC) first Computer Simulation Exercise Applied to the International Law of Armed Conflict. There, amid staged high-pressure combat situations, officers led Troops and managed Military resources to combat illegal armed organizations similar to those operating trafficking networks in the region. International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) delegates guided the Soldiers during the joint exercises. Since building a rapport with civilians was one of the training’s key components, Military officials learned to show civilians, through their knowledge and skills, that they are staunch allies of peace and security. Troops engaged in simulated combat scenarios in different environments, weather, and situations involving threats and Troop deployments, since conducting exercises in the real world with Troops on the ground would be far more costly. costlier. Promoting cooperation At the end of the computerized workshop, Derek Spranger, ICRC’s representative in El Salvador, spoke to the participants about the importance of the teamwork fostered through the CFAC. “The conference is an important forum within the framework of cooperation, the exchange of best practices, training, and brotherhood among those who devote their lives to the militaries of each of their countries.” “The teams undergo combat simulations – some without prior planning, with evolving scenarios, working together,” said Colonel Andrés Zamora of El Salvador, an engineer who served as one of the workshop instructors. “Crisis management and civilian assistance training exercises were also designed.”
By Julieta Pelcastre/Diálogo August 03, 2018 The Guatemalan Navy, with the support of the U.S. Marine Corpsy, trained a naval component in the Advanced Marine Course in Puerto Barrios, Izabal, throughout May 2018. The objective of the course was to improve the response capabilities of the Guatemalan Marines to conduct operations in various environments. “We thank the U.S. government for contributing to the training of our marines,” Captain Erick Roberto Orellana, second commander of the Guatemalan Marine Brigade, told Diálogo. “It helped us strengthen our skills and capabilities to fulfill our amphibious and riverine missions in coastal areas.” Soldiers of steel The training consisted of high-performance tactical phases in areas such as urban operations, water combat, use of support weapons, as well as incursion and amphibious landing techniques in waters 1 kilometer off the coast. “Soldiers have to bear the weight of their own body, plus the weight of all the equipment and weapons,” said Capt. Orellana. “It’s hard, because it’s twice the effort to get to shore without sinking or drowning and without being noticed.” With the support of U.S. service members, Guatemalan troops learned to take position in a war ship. They received specific combat training to respond to an ambush or enemy fire, and trained with modern physical conditioning techniques. U.S. service members also provided operational advice to naval and land officers of the Guatemalan Marine Brigade. The Advanced Marine Course demands physical and mental strength, and not every candidate is able to complete the course and graduate. “Out of 80 students accepted, only 25 passed the course,” said Capt. Orellana. “We don’t want supermen; we seek to train elements that will contribute to maintaining the defense of sovereignty and deliver maximum results in the fight against national and international criminal organizations.” Integrated cooperation The Guatemalan Marine Brigade contributes to the development of joint and combined military operations against any threat to the general public. According to the Guatemalan Ministry of Defense, the unit seeks to be the best-trained strategic brigade in the country to conduct operations in coastal, riverine, amphibious, and special environments. Collaboration with the armed forces of the Western Hemisphere allows Guatemalan Armed Forces to improve their sea, air, and land defense. The U.S. Department of State, in its 2018 International Narcotics Control Strategy Report, estimates that about 1,400 tons of cocaine were smuggled through the country in 2017, most was destined for the U.S market. “Integrated cooperation with the U.S., Colombian, Mexican, and Chilean governments allows us to be trained, improve our own doctrine, and apply it in our fields to attain the best outcome in an operation, and make completion of tasks more dynamic,” Navy Lieutenant Eduardo Antonio Carmona, chief of the Naval Training Center of the Guatemalan Marine Forces, told Diálogo. “We have a more technical training with the U.S. military, while we focus more on the military’s own capabilities when we work with Latin American forces. “Sometimes equipment or resources are inadequate, but marines are trained to complete assigned tasks with available resources. Marines know and trust they can fulfill their mission quickly and effectively, no matter how good their weapons or boots are.” The Guatemalan Marine Brigade has receives tactical and physical training from the United States since 2013. According to Lt. Carmona, a total of 540 marines have been trained by way of the advanced course. “Thanks to this cooperation we seized a huge amount of drugs in the last three years,” Capt. Orellana concluded. U.S. Marine Corps amphibious troops will offer two more courses in 2018.
CFPB views credit unions’ payday alternative loans as a “good product” and wants to make room for those loans in its payday lending rulemaking, CFPB Director Richard Cordray told the Senate Banking Committee Thursday as he delivered his semiannual report to the panel. In testimony similar to that given last month before the House Financial Services Committee, Cordray testified before the panel about CFPB’s regulatory and enforcement activities, future rulemaking and the bureau’s regulatory relief efforts for credit unions. The CFPB director fielded numerous questions from committee members on matters important to credit unions, including consumer services and regulatory topics, such as the bureau’s exemption authority.Asked by Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., what solutions are out there for small, short-term credit, Cordray noted the role of credit unions and singled out PALs as a good, law-abiding product. He added that the bureau wants to allow room for the product under any new rules on payday lending. continue reading » 5SHARESShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblr

Then-board Chairman Rick Metsger said the rules would make it easier for people to gain access to affordable financial services.

She also serves as Senior Vice President of AMC, the holding company of the Iowa Credit Union League and parent … Web: https://www.policyworksllc.com Details As credit unions increasingly embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and seek to better represent and serve their ever-changing communities, understanding the regulatory components that touch such initiatives is an important starting place. For example, laws such as the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEOA) and Equal Credit Opportunity (ECOA) acts outline baseline requirements for employers and financial services organizations to follow to ensure equal treatment regardless of ethnicity, national origin, gender and other protected classes. Viewed from a different perspective, these laws provide the baseline for inclusivity in hiring and lending. While the EEOA speaks to the area of human resources, which is a robust area in and of itself, let’s focus on DEI from a membership standpoint. Certainly, few if any credit unions today consciously or actively discriminate against particular groups based on national origin, race, religion, or other criteria. But inclusion involves more than mere non-discrimination. It means proactively reaching out to underrepresented groups, understanding their needs, and striving to meet those needs through the credit union’s products and services in a compliant manner.Adjusting Products and ServicesCredit unions, like all organizations, have to make business decisions on a variety of matters every day. One such business decision could be expanding their services to underrepresented groups. A way to ensure the credit union is addressing the community at large is to consider the changing demographics in its membership area and aligning account opening and lending practices accordingly. If the credit union is serving immigrant groups for example, this may require an update to a member identification program, lending policies and procedures, in order to be inclusive of all.End-to-end MindfulnessIt is important to keep the needs of the target community in mind from end-to-end, all the way from advertising to member service on the front-line. For example, if a credit union advertises its services on its website or elsewhere in a language other than English, be sure to have employees available to speak to members in that other language. This will not only make non-English speaking members more comfortable working with the credit union and can reduce misconceptions or misunderstandings among non-English speaking members, this will help you avoid any potential UDAAP ( Unfair, Deceptive, or Abusive Acts or Practices) violations and overall will avoid misleading members into thinking you offer services in another language if in fact you don’tIf you are going to provide materials in another language, a translation strategy is also important to ensure all relevant information is accurately translated, leaving no room for misunderstandings. Because there can be many ways to translate a word or phrase from one language to another, it is important to seek experts who not only understand the native language being translated to, but also understand financial and credit union terminology for any required translation work. Accuracy, consistency, and relevancy are important in translations. Avoid using Google Translate for something this important and seek outside consultants, if necessary, to assist. Going Beyond Traditional ApproachesServing diverse population groups is part of the credit union creed. While there are always regulations to consider, there are also many opportunities to grow credit union membership by tailoring products and services to specific needs of the membership base.Serving people with non-traditional forms of identification, such as a consulate card, is one example of new membership a credit union could be serving. By expanding services to include underserved members and updating the credit union’s member identification policy and procedures to include non-traditional forms of identification, you do not have to turn down membership. The IRS’s Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), which is a taxpayer identification number that some immigrants may have, is a valid taxpayer identification number that credit unions can accept to lend and open interest-bearing accounts. Another opportunity to be inclusive in lending is through the underwriting process. Members without traditional credit histories may not have the traditional forms of documentation you seek to verify credit, however, this does not mean that they have not established credit. The credit they have established however may be found in non-traditional sources such as alternate payment data, including that found in paying recurring bills such as utilities, or rent. While this likely would not alter your lending policy, it would require a change in underwriting procedures to ensure your requirements list is as inclusive as possible. This would apply for anyone seeking a loan at your credit union, whether it’s a young college student or a recent immigrant. To achieve success in DEI initiatives you need to go beyond meeting the regulations. The regulations provide a baseline framework, however, it takes initiative and a commitment to ensure you go beyond what’s required to what’s needed in your communities.
Gallup recently initiated a study among its Credit Union Consortium participants — representative of 3.2 million credit union members across the U.S. — to better understand how members have been affected by the COVID-19 outbreak and exactly what kind of support they need most.Credit Union Members Are Suffering More ShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblr continue reading » Due to the economic impact of the pandemic, supporting members’ financial wellbeing has become the central issue for credit unions. Gallup finds that credit union members are getting hit harder than the average American — 76% say they have experienced a great deal or fair amount of disruption, compared with the national average of 70% recorded in mid-March.Gallup defines financial wellbeing as “managing one’s economic life to reduce stress and increase security” — in short, one’s emotional relationship with money, which paints a truer picture of hope and worry than traditional financial health metrics do. A Gallup analysis of Consortium participant data shows that financial wellbeing is deteriorating: The percentage considered “thriving” is decreasing, while the percentages considered “struggling” and “suffering” are growing.

When given during an overdose, naloxone blocks the effects of opioids on the brain and restores breathing within two to eight minutes. Naloxone has been used safely by medical professionals for more than 40 years and has only one function: to reverse the effects of opioids on the brain and respiratory system in order to prevent death. Naloxone has no potential for abuse- a person can’t get high or become addicted to it – and it is safe to use. (Naloxone does not work to reverse overdose from other types of substances). How do I get naloxone?Family members and friends can access this medication by obtaining a prescription from their family doctor or by using the standing order (a prescription written for the general public, rather than specifically for an individual) issued by Rachel Levine, M.D., PA Physician General. The standing order is kept on file at many pharmacies, or may be downloaded here.If you cannot access Scribd, you can also download the standing order here from the Department of Health’s website.Naloxone prescriptions can be filled at most pharmacies. Although the medication may not be available for same day pick up, it can often be ordered and available within a day or two. What types of naloxone are available? Two of the most common ways that naloxone is administered are intranasal (nasal spray) and the auto-injector. Please note, not all pharmacies stock both forms and insurance coverage may vary depending on the type of medication being purchased and each individual insurance plan. Check your insurance prescription formulary or call your benefits manager to determine if the medication is covered by your particular plan or if your purchase of the medication will be an out-of-pocket cost.Intranasal currently has two pieces that are easily assembled: a prefilled medication tube and an atomization device which is sold separately. The nasal piece may not be stocked at your local pharmacy; however, they may assist in ordering it. Additionally, the nasal atomization device can be ordered from a number of medical supply companies without a prescription. The Auto-injector comes in a manufactured dosage form (similar to an epi-pen) and has a recorded message to talk you through giving the medication. How do I administer naloxone? In addition to talking to your healthcare provider or the pharmacist about how to use naloxone, individuals giving this medication to someone should take the online training ahead of time. Training is available at one of the Department of Health approved training sites: Get Naloxone Now or PA Virtual Training Network. These easy to understand, brief trainings explain how to recognize the signs and symptoms of an opioid overdose, what to do in the event of an overdose, and instruct on how to give naloxone. While it is not necessary to obtain a training certificate in order to purchase naloxone, learning these important details will help you respond properly in the event of an overdose and also meet the immunity requirements of PA Act 139.Could I get in trouble for giving someone naloxone (statutory immunity)?Good Samaritan: Through the ‘Good Samaritan’ provision of Act 139, friends, loved ones and bystanders are encouraged to call 911 for emergency medical services in the event an overdose is witnessed and to stay with the individual until help arrives. The provision offers certain criminal and civil protections to the caller so that they cannot get in trouble for being present, witnessing and reporting an overdose.Administering Naloxone: Physicians are permitted to write third party prescriptions for naloxone and you are immune from liability for giving naloxone if you believed the person was suffering from an opioid overdose (heroin or prescription pain medication) and you called for medical help/911 after giving the medication.Does insurance cover naloxone?Insurance companies vary in how they cover naloxone and other drugs used to treat an opioid overdose. Prior to having a naloxone prescription filled with a pharmacy, consumers are encouraged to check with their insurance carriers to find out whether naloxone is a covered benefit under their policy, and, if so, what form of naloxone is covered, and any cost-sharing amounts that may apply under their policy. Will Fee-for-Service and the managed care organizations (MCOs) pay for naloxone dispensed under the standing order for Medical Assistance recipients?Yes.Will Medical Assistance require a prescription in order for the pharmacist to fill the naloxone for a Medical Assistance recipient?Yes, per 55 Pa Code, Chapter 1121 – Pharmaceutical Services – §1121.52, pharmacists can treat the standing order as a verbal order for Medical Assistance recipients. Can a person other than the eligible Medical Assistance recipient (friend or family member) obtain the naloxone at the pharmacy on the recipient’s behalf? Will the Medical Assistance Program make payment?PA Medical Assistance will make payment for naloxone for the eligible Medical Assistance recipient. Is prior authorization required by Medical Assistance for any of the naloxone products or supplies? The Evzio Auto-Injector is covered by Medical Assistance, but requires prior authorization. Generic naloxone is covered without the need for prior authorization.Where can a pharmacy access Medical Assistance billing procedures for naloxone and the nasal actuator? The Fee-for-Service Program will post information related to billing for naloxone on the DHS Pharmacy Services website. Pharmacies will need to contact each MCO individually to obtain information about their billing procedures. Will copays apply for the naloxone products and nasal actuator? No, the Medical Assistance copay will not apply. Is there a limit to the number of times that a Medical Assistance recipient can get naloxone? No, there is no limit to the number of fills that can be obtained. How can someone with an addiction to prescription pain medicines, heroin or other drugs get help?Treatment for drug abuse and addiction is available! You can find out more by calling the County Drug and Alcohol Office where you live. For more information or to get the contact information for your local office visit the Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs website or call 717-783-8200.While it may be uncomfortable to talk to someone about their substance abuse problem, research shows that it is more likely for an individual to seek help for their problem within 30 days following an overdose if someone talks to them right after the overdose event about going to treatment. Are there any other standing orders in Pennsylvania?Yes. There have been three well publicized standing orders that we are aware of to date that impact Pennsylvania which include: 1) CVS who has developed one for their pharmacies nationwide; 2) Montgomery County; and 3) Allegheny County. The standing order being signed today does not affect these standing orders. Updated with the paragraph above: February 15, 2018, 12:00 PMUpdated with FAQs: October 29, 2015, 3:59 PM Posted: October 28, 2015, 1:20 PMHarrisburg, PA – Governor Tom Wolf today continued his “Government That Works” Tour and announced a significant step forward in his administration’s fight against the heroin epidemic in Pennsylvania. Governor Wolf stood with Physician General Dr. Rachel Levine at the Pennsylvania Medical Society as Dr. Levine signed a statewide standing order for naloxone*, a medication that can reverse an overdose that is caused by an opioid drug. The governor was also joined by Secretary Ted Dallas, Secretary Gary Tennis, Secretary Karen Murphy, and Chairman Josh Shapiro.“This standing order is the next step in my administration’s fight against the addiction and overdose epidemic in our state,” said Governor Wolf. “We must do all that we can to support those Pennsylvania families suffering from the effects of addiction. I am proud to take this action with my cabinet members today.”Through the signing of this standing order, Dr. Levine has signed a prescription for naloxone to all Pennsylvanians. For more information about naloxone and how to administer it, please visit the Department of Drug and Alcohol Program’s page on overdose reversal.“Making it possible for all Pennsylvania residents to access the life-saving drug naloxone is a huge victory in our battle against drug overdose deaths in the commonwealth,” said Physician General Dr. Rachel Levine. “I am proud to sign this standing order and continue the efforts of the Wolf Administration to protect the most vulnerable Pennsylvanians. This forward-thinking initiative gives people the tools they need to keep their communities and families intact.”The rise in heroin addiction and prescription drug abuse has quickly led to a public health crisis in Pennsylvania, where 1 in 4 families suffer from the effects of substance abuse addiction. Heroin and opioid overdose are now the leading cause of accidental death in Pennsylvania, killing more individuals than those involved in fatal motor vehicle accidents. In 2014, 2,400 Pennsylvanians died from drug overdoses.“Addiction can happen to anyone from any walk of life, and heroin is now the second leading cause of years of life lost,” said Department of Human Services Secretary Ted Dallas. “I am not going to accept that. We must fight to ensure our children, our loved ones, and our neighbors have access to these critical life-saving programs.”“Too many Pennsylvania families are being affected by this crisis,” said Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs Secretary Gary Tennis. “In addition to finding solutions like these to save lives, we are also working hard to raise awareness and break down stigmas about substance abuse disorders. My department will continue to work tirelessly to provide the best possible recovery and treatment options, to ensure that we do not see high rates of overdose recurrences.”“It is our goal at the Department of Health is to ensure that life-saving resources such as naloxone are available to every Pennsylvanian,” said Department of Health Secretary Dr. Karen Murphy. “Educating Pennsylvanians on how to use naloxone in case of an emergency is essential to curbing the devastating number of opioid-related overdose deaths that we have seen in the commonwealth over the past several years.”“The opioid epidemic is a serious public health issue and is it also an issue of public safety,” said Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency Chairman Josh Shapiro. “PCCD is working to ensure that the healthcare and law enforcement communities are working collaboratively to bring all our resources to this fight.”Since his inauguration, Governor Wolf has worked with his administration to provide real solutions not only to save lives but also to help addicted individuals and their families get the treatment they need to live long, productive lives. Such actions taken by the Wolf Administration include the development of the ABC-MAP prescription drug monitoring program, the creation of the interagency Heroin Task Force, the support for the use of naloxone at schools across the Commonwealth, and stocking all Pennsylvania State Police cars with the naloxone drug. Since equipping State Police cars with naloxone, over 300 lives have been saved with this drug.Governor Wolf’s 2015-16 budget proposes $7.5 million in funds to provide more naloxone to police and to provide more and better treatment options for Pennsylvanians.“My administration, law enforcement agencies, those in the health care field, those in county services offices, and many others work hard every day to fight back against heroin epidemic,” concluded Governor Wolf. “My greatest hope is that today’s action will continue to aid these statewide efforts to overcome the addiction and overdose crisis in Pennsylvania.” October 28, 2015
In 2015 OAK carried out a comprehensive survey of the quality of external audit reports and found a high error rate. It subsequently issued a draft directive laying down requirements for auditors, which the cabinet noted was strongly criticised by associations and authorities. The government was subsequently commissioned to check whether OAK’s directive was in line with its legal authority and to potentially consider adjustments. Today’s report is the outcome of that review process. It reaching its conclusions the government also had the input of an opinion from an independent expert, Thomas Gächter of the University of Zurich, although it effectively disagreed with his view that OAK should be denied any authority to give instructions to auditors. If the supervisor were only permitted to issue recommendations, it would ultimately not be able to fulfil its task of making sure that the occupational pension system as a whole was functioning reliably, according to the government. However, the statutory authority to issue directives only applied to those that were needed for quality assurance, it noted in its report. It did not extend to issuing stipulations relating to the admission of auditors, which was the responsibility of the federal audit supervisor. The audit authority has previously warned about weaknesses in the auditing of the country’s pension funds. The Swiss federal pensions regulator “exceeded its legal authority” when it proposed requirements that related to the admission of external auditors of occupational pension funds, according to the country’s government.Although the Oberaufsichtskommission (OAK BV) was allowed to issue certain technical instructions to pension fund auditors as part of its statutory mandate, the introduction of a special permit for examining pension funds was a matter for lawmakers, the federal council said in a report published today. However, it was in agreement with the OAK that there were issues that need to be addressed with regard to the auditing of occupational pension funds, as previously outlined by the regulator. The cabinet had therefore instructed the federal department for internal affairs to weigh possible legislative steps, including whether the federal audit supervisory authority should be assigned sole responsibility for admitting and supervising auditors of occupational pension funds.

Brad Stevens, who became a famous coach by taking the Butler Bulldogs to two NCAA finals, is now the head coach of the Boston Celtics. I was skeptical about whether he could make the transition to the pro ranks because of his mild-mannered appearance as a college coach. His fierce competitiveness has brought the Celtics back to the forefront; however, his team lost in the Eastern finals to the Cavaliers this year. The Celtics are predicted to dominate the Eastern Conference the next few years because they have many first-round draft picks. Danny Ainge, their general manager, has made some schrewd trades to stockpile all of these top draft picks. With Brad Stevens leading the team and a core of young players, they will challenge Cleveland and LeBron James next year. I am not a pro fan per se, but I am a Brad Stevens backer.

United dismissed Belgian opponents Club Brugge 5-0 at Old Trafford to win 6-1 on aggregate. Fernandes pulled the strings in the first half, scoring the opening goal from the penalty spot after a spectacular handball from defender Simon Deli, who was sent off. The Portuguese then played a crucial role in the second for Ighalo before Scott McTominay, making a welcome return to the starting line-up after injury, grabbed a third before half-time. Two late goals from Fred emphasised United’s superiority, and Solskjaer was understandably buoyant as he reflected on the performance. “I’m very happy tonight. Obviously we’re in a moment now that we rotate a bit, players are getting games, but, when you score goals and play like this, you’re going to get more confidence,” the Norwegian said. “It was brilliant to see the start of the game, I thought they had the right intent, created loads of chances, and, when they go down to 10 men, of course the game was more or less over.” Fernandes has had a huge impact since his move from Sporting Lisbon, while Ighalo was given a first start since his surprise loan signing from Shanghai Shenhua and responded with a strong display. “Bruno coming in obviously makes a big, big difference,” said Solskjaer. “You can see he’s got a hand in all the three first goals. What a pass, what a goal Odion’s goal was. “I’m very happy with the contribution of Odion as well up front, doing what he does. He’s a target man, we can play up to him, he’ll hold it, he’s got Juan [Mata] and Bruno next to him and you’ve got runners then. “I think as a fellow striker I know how important that first goal is. He’s been close a couple of times, you can see he sniffs goals. He wants to be there where it sometimes hurts. That goal, he’s sharp in his head. That’s a natural striker.”— Tags: Bruno FernandesClub BruggeManchester UnitedNatural strikerOdion IghaloOle Gunnar SolskjaerScott McTominay
Northern Ireland Under-21s were downed 1-0 by a solitary first-half goal in their Euro 2015 qualifier in Belgium. After a slow start, Northern Ireland drew a couple of saves from Belgium goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski, Carl Winchester and Josh Carson both trying their luck. The hosts settled after that with Paul-Jose Mpoku, Thorgan Hazard and Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco coming into the game more but failing to work Connor Devlin. Indeed, the next shot on target came from Oldham midfielder Winchester after 42 minutes but he could not beat Kaminski. Instead, Belgium scored with their first real attempt on goal, Batshuayi firing home from Laurens De Bock’s assist moments before the interval. Dagenham’s Sean Shields replaced Kirk Millar at half-time, the first of three replacements alongside Jamie Reid and Paul McElroy, but Northern Ireland could not find an equaliser. James Gray saw his 56th-minute free-kick saved and soon after Batshuayi hit the woodwork. There were chances at either end for a second goal but it did not materialise, and with three minutes of added time on the clock Donnelly picked up a second yellow card. Press Association Standard Liege striker Michy Batshuayi grabbed the only goal of the game just before the interval to maintain his side’s 100 per cent record, while Fulham’s Liam Donnelly was sent off in injury time. Stephen Robinson’s side have now lost both of their Group Nine clashes but this represents a significant improvement on May’s 3-0 reverse in Cyprus.
India shock England in opener after four run-outsENGLAND were stunned on the opening day of the Women’s World Cup, losing by 35 runs to India in Derby.Openers Smriti Mandhana (90) and Punam Raut (86) took advantage of some poor England bowling, before Mithali Raj (71) lifted India to 281-3.England stumbled to 67-3 in reply and though Fran Wilson made 81, she was run out brilliantly by Ekta Bisht and the hosts were bowled out for 246.England next play on Tuesday, against Pakistan in Leicester. That will represent a good opportunity to register a first victory, in an eight-team tournament where each side play each other before the semi-finals.However, an England defeat in that game, or the matches against Sri Lanka and South Africa that follow, would be a huge setback, with sterner tests against Australia, New Zealand and West Indies to follow. The Kiwis began their campaign with a routine nine-wicket victory over Sri Lanka. On this evidence, England will have to improve if they are to end a global trophy drought that dates back to 2009.They came unstuck against an inspired India side who are two places below them in the world rankings, in fourth, but showed more intent with the bat, more discipline with the ball and some electricity in the field. On an overcast morning, England looked to have gained an advantage by bowling first, but Mandhana and Raut, who was dropped three times, seized the initiative.England struggled with the bat as India took pace off the ball, playing ineffective sweeps until the hitting of Wilson and Katherine Brunt provided belated hope.Wilson, in only her seventh one-day international, may not have been playing but for Lauren Winfield being ruled out with a wrist injury. She joined Knight to rebuild after the England top order failed – among them Sarah Taylor, returning to an international cricket after a year away with an anxiety-related issue, who made 22.It was Knight who first raised the tempo, hitting two straight sixes before attempting a run to bowler Kaur and failing to beat the direct hit. When Wilson was joined by Brunt, they continued to show more willingness to hit the ball, building a stand of 62 in only seven overs.Sixty-eight runs were needed from the final nine overs, but Brunt was run out by Deepti Sharma’s direct hit from point, then Wilson fell to bowler Bisht’s incredible flick back on to the non-striker’s stumps and the game was up.(BBC Sport)

Facebook Twitter Google+ Published on January 29, 2015 at 12:07 am Contact Liam: [email protected] Leigh Ross expected Nicole Lundstrom to be her catcher for four years. But when she transferred to Providence in the offseason, Ross, the SU head coach was faced with the task of replacing arguably her best offensive weapon. This year, she’ll do that by turning to a two-catcher rotation of sophomore Alyssa Dewes and senior Julie Wambold. They’ll take over responsibilities behind the plate and fill the void offensively.“As a coach you never know what’s going to come up,” Ross said “… and so I’m asking the two of them to play important roles for us.”Lundstrom was the Orange’s starting catcher in her freshman season, ranking first on the team in at-bats (154), second in runs batted in (32), third in runs scored (29) and fourth in batting average (.312). Ross said the team would miss her bat, but also said that Dewes and Wambold are more than capable of filling the void.AdvertisementThis is placeholder textDewes and Wambold hit .307 and .309, respectively last season, however, neither played an inning at catcher. While replicating Lundstrom’s power will be hard to do, both players were regulars in the SU lineup last season. Their offensive contributions were enough for Ross to expect them both to be in the lineup no matter who is behind the plate.Ross said the starting catcher would be determined game-by-game and would see how it played out from there. Dewes and Wambold both believe the change in position is only making them work harder.“We push each other to do better,” Dewes said. “Watching her work and get after it in practice only makes me want to do the same. I don’t think we’re competing with each other.”Defensively, the transition for both players hasn’t been as tough as it would be teaching the position to someone for the first time. Dewes and Wambold both played catcher in high school so there is a level of familiarity.Dewes was a catcher throughout her childhood and high school and even was originally recruited to play catcher. Ross described Wambold as an “all-around athlete” who also caught a little bit in high school. She receives “quietly and smoothly” behind the plate, Ross said, having great hands and a quick release. Those physical tools match well with the experience and confidence she brings to the table as a senior. Dewes, though a sophomore, has the stronger arm.“Having two great catchers is going to be great this year. They each do something different really well behind the plate and in the way they handle pitchers,” pitcher Lindsay Larkin said. “Every pitcher is comfortable with both of them calling a game.”The catchers have been working on lots of drills to improve on blocking loose balls, framing pitches and picking runners off base. The most improvement Ross has seen has come from live bullpen sessions where Dewes and Wambold have been developing chemistry with the team’s pitchers. She is encouraged by what she’s seen, despite the fact that neither has caught in a game for SU before.“It’s like riding a bike,” Wambold said. “It doesn’t take much to get back in the swing of things. Just lots of reps.” Comments
Additionally, Doe defendants 1 through 500, are alleged to have “engaged in a pattern and practice of ignoring complaints, failing to investigate sexual harassment and abuse complaints, deliberately concealing information from abuse victims as well as law enforcement and the Medical Board of California, and contributed to a sexually hostile environment on campus at USC,” according to the lawsuit. The identity and working capacities of these defendants are not yet known, but are said to comprise employees, agents or servants of USC who were under the University’s direct supervision. Content warning: This article contains explicit references to instances of sexual abuse, sexual harrassment, victim-blaming and harrassment based on gender and race. Twenty five former USC students have come forward with a new lawsuit against former campus gynecologist George Tyndall, the University and 500 unnamed defendants with working relationships to the University, a press release from law firms Arias Sanguinetti Wang & Torrijos and Janet, Janet and Suggs confirmed Thursday. This brings the total to over 800 current and former students who have opted out of the $215 million class action settlement in January and who have filed lawsuits against USC and Tyndall, saying the University played a role in covering up about three decades of sexual abuse against patients at the Engemann Student Health Center. In addition, the lawsuit turns to USC for letting Tyndall’s actions, “committed to satisfy [his] own prurient sexual desires,” continue for years while harboring knowledge of his actions by complaints from his patients. “Despite the fact that USC has publicly admitted that it received numerous documented complaints of TYNDALL’s sexually abusive behavior dating back to at least the year 2000, and that such complaints are now known to have existed as early as the year 1988, USC actively and deliberately concealed TYNDALL’s sexual abuse of female student patients for years, continuing to grant TYNDALL unfettered sexual access to the young students in his and USC’s, care, all to protect Defendant USC’s reputation and financial coffers,” the lawsuit read. “Throughout the litigation process involving George Tyndall, USC has been committed to resolving these lawsuits fairly,” the University wrote in a statement to the Daily Trojan Thursday. “Once the university is served with this lawsuit, it will review and respond to the allegations through the legal process.” In total, the suit includes 16 causes of action against Tyndall, USC and Does 1 through 500 — along with the request for a jury trial. The lawsuit calls the defendant Tyndall “a serial sexual predator” who took advantage of his position to commit sexual abuses such as forcing patients to undress in his presence, photographing patients while they were unclothed, penetrating patients with unwashed hands and without personal protective equipment and making repeated comments that were meant to sexually harass and were racist and misogynistic in nature. In the new lawsuit, defendants 1 through 500, along with the University, are alleged to have continually ignored complaints, deliberately concealed information to law enforcement and the Medical Board of California and contributed to “a sexually hostile environment on campus.” (Daily Trojan file photo) The Los Angeles Police Department launched a criminal investigation into Tyndall’s conduct in May 2018, leading to the L.A. County District Attorney’s office filing 29 felony counts against him, including 11 counts of sexual battery by fraud of 16 different women from 2009 to 2016. The plaintiffs, identified as Jane Does 138 to 162, have filed complaints that span almost the entirety of Tyndall’s tenure at USC, ranging from undergraduate and graduate students who attended the University from the late 1980s to 2017, a year after Tyndall was placed on leave pending an investigation into his conduct. While the LAPD’s investigation is still pending, the civil suit allows the plaintiffs to bring action against Tyndall’s misconduct and under the Tom Bane Civil Rights Act under California civil code, which prohibits discrimination, intimidation or coercion based on a protected class that threatens the individual’s enjoyment of their personal and constitutional rights. “USC paid more attention to its own financial gain and chose to protect a sexually deviant doctor instead of thousands upon thousands of women who trusted USC over the course of decades,” the press release read. “USC’s conduct empowered Tyndall to be an abusive predator for decades.”
However, the players in the bubble have made it well known that they are playing for more than just the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy. Players are motivated beyond their drive to win. They’re playing for justice. All of this has raised the following questions for some: Do we even need sports at all right now? Should successful athletes speak on pertinent issues unrelated to sports while on the court? Should we even mix sports and social justice initiatives together? It’s also hard to fathom why people think it’s okay to watch, bet on and root for Black athletes on the court but not support them as Black people off the court, as Utah Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell said in a tweet in June. What I really want to say with this column, though, is that sports not only brings people together, but as we are witnessing perhaps most prominently with the NBA, sports can be used as a vehicle to spread awareness and support social justice initiatives. The main thing that the NBA Players Association wanted during negotiations on the NBA restart with regard to social justice was to have the players’ voices heard not for publicity reasons but because they knew that their high-profile stature will make fans listen to their words. Kneeling spreads awareness. Speaking out during press conferences — like Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart did in July — spreads awareness. Sending out tweets calling for change spreads awareness. One of my favorite things about sports is that it can always bring people together. The pandemic and social justice movement have revealed deep-rooted ideological differences in the public sphere. Our country has arguably become more divided than it has ever been before. Sports, on the other hand, is nonpartisan: You don’t have to belong to a certain political party to shoot some hoops or watch basketball. Team sports, especially, are all about communication, cooperation, teamwork and perseverance. Amid the chaos of 2020 — including the way-too-long sports shutdown — the NBA restart at Walt Disney World has been so exciting and fast-paced that each game feels like March Madness. Each team is playing with so much energy, it’s like their seasons were never even suspended in the first place. These comments cannot be more insular. Numbers don’t lie: Black men are 2.5 times as likely to be shot and killed by police than their white counterparts. The killings of Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and most recently the shooting of Jacob Blake have reignited the Black Lives Matter movement that has been prioritized by the NBA and its players this season more than virtually any in the league’s history. So when athletes like James make such comments, they are making them from the perspective of a Black person in the United States, period. Wealth does not change one’s race. The argument that Black athletes are somehow immune to police brutality due to the size of their pockets is invalid. The answers: Yes, yes and yes. Since the beginning of the NBA restart, I’ve seen a lot of posts about players advocating for the Black Lives Matter movement on my Instagram feed. But within the comment sections of these posts, I’ve seen a lot more hate toward these athletes for speaking out against racial injustice. Many of these comments have to do with the notion that it doesn’t make sense for NBA players to say that they’re “scared as Black men” in this country — like LeBron James said Monday night — since they are high-profile, wealthy athletes, and that victims of police shootings “should have just complied” with the officers at the scene to avoid violence. “BLACK LIVES MATTER” is printed above center court each game and players have messages such as “Equality” and “Peace” written above their jersey numbers and on their sneakers. The subject of many postgame press conferences has been diverted away from basketball entirely and toward the pressing issue of racial injustice in this country. Although my New York Knicks are (unsurprisingly) not competing in the playoffs right now and I’m not rooting for any team in particular to be crowned this tumultuous season’s champion, I find it extremely important to hear what NBA players have to say about the recent shooting of Blake, who was shot in the back seven times by a police officer in Kenosha, Wis. in front of his own children. After all, they have the platform — and they have all the right in the world — to make a difference. Shawn Farhadian is a sophomore writing about sports. Gareth Southgate’s England were handed a favourable start to the tournament, taking on Tunisia and World Cup debutants Panama in the opening two games. Southgate will be hoping that his side have already booked a place in the last 16, when the Three Lions face a Belgium side littered with Premier League stars in an intriguing final group game. England are currently 7/5 to top Group G and are as short as 1/4 to qualify from the group. The expectation doesn’t stop there, as since the draw was made, England’s odds of winning have been slightly trimmed from 18/1 to just 16/1.Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “World Cup fever is beginning to build after this afternoon’s draw, and the odds are suggesting Southgate’s boys have a great chance of going far. The footballing Gods have also set up a potentially huge quarter-final with Germany, where England will be looking to exact revenge for 2010.”Arguably the most tantalising game of the group stages comes from Group B, where 2008 World Champions Spain take on current European champions Portugal, in a clash that Portuguese defender Jose Fonte described as “a big rivalry.”A sub-plot from Group B is the appearance of Iran manager, Carlos Queiroz who boasts a managerial pedigree better than most at the tournament, Queiroz not only had two stints in charge of Portugal, but also spent time as Real Madrid manager and as Alex Ferguson’s assistant at Manchester United. His organised Iran side and an underestimated Morocco could cause Portugal and Spain problems in this group. Meanwhile the ambitions of hosts Russia will have been heightened by being placed in a group with Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Uruguay. Subsequently meaning the game that will open the tournament, will be a rather underwhelming one between Saudi Arabia and Russia. Furthermore, given the attacking prowess of Edinson Cavani, Luis Suarez, Mohamed Salah’s Russia may well perceive the tournament opener to be a must-win game if they have any aspirations of getting through the group. Group F is the arguable group of death, made up of reigning World Champions Germany, Mexico, South Korea and Italy’s conquerors, Sweden. Whilst it’s widely expected that Joachim Low’s Germany won’t have too many problems winning this group, ties and against Mexico and Sweden will certainly provide a good test of just how feared the side ranked number one in the World should be.Guiding Brasil towards World Cup glory would be incredibly beneficial to the World’s most expensive player Neymar, who appears to be on a mission to steal the Ballond’Or from the clutches of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Those burdened with the unenviable task of being in the same group as the tournament favourites are, Costa Rica, Switzerland and Serbia, all of which are likely to be fighting it out for second spot in Group E.Brasil’s arch rivals Argentina looked anything but convincing in qualification, only sealing a place at the tournament because of a magical performance from Messi in the final group game against Ecuador. Jorge Sampaoli’s team will have to improve in order to come through a tricky group with an Iceland side that continue to defy the odds, Nigeria and the always dangerous Croatia. Being in a group with a much fancied France side desperate to go a step further in this tournament then they did at Euro 2016, means Peru, Denmark and Australia are all destined to be desperately vying to claim second place in Group C.Group H possible throws up the most evenly matched group, with a Columbia side that’ll benefit immensely from James Rodriguez playing regularly at Bayern Munich. His club-mate, Robert Lewandowski will be hoping to fire Poland into the knockout stages, even if it looks unlikely he restricts their success in the Bundesliga, Dortmund’s Shinji Kagawa will be hoping he can help Japan find success in this group, whilst Senegal will be heavily reliant on Liverpool’s Sadio Mane if they’re to have any success in Group H.___________________The World Cup will be a key topic at the ‘Betting on Football 2018’ (#bofcon2018) conference. Well-respected boxing trainer Ronnie Shields doubts the May 2 super fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Maweather Jr. will end in a knockout, even though members of both camps insist that a stoppage is possible.Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, told On the Ropes Boxing in a recent interview that he believes the “Pacman” will win by knockout.”I don’t have a round, but the thing is, we have to break him down first, and I think in the later rounds, I believe Manny will knock him out,” Roach said.Meanwhile, Mayweather Promotions chief executive Leonard Ellerbe guaranteed that the American – known for his defensive wizardry – will go for a knockout if the opportunity presented itself.”A lot of it will play out on how both fighters come out from the opening bell, but if Floyd sees the opportunity, I know for a fact that he will finish him off,” said Ellerbe during Mayweather’s open workout Tuesday in Las Vegas.Shields is not so convinced, however. “I don’t think so,” he answered when asked by On the Ropes Boxing if fans will see a knockout come May 2.”I think Floyd’s defense is too good, and I don’t believe Floyd punches hard enough, because of his hands, to knock Manny out,” he explained. He believes the bout is more likely to end on a cut than on a knockout.Shields is favoring Mayweather in the bout because the American “knows how to win, he knows how to pull out victories.””Pacquiao, he knows how to lose,” Shields said. “Floyd is a very intelligent fighter, and when you look at it, he picks you off very quickly. Once he does that, he’s a very difficult guy to fight.” Pacquiao has more power than Mayweather, Shields conceded, but is at a disadvantage because he is the smaller fighter. At the same time, Shields doubts Mayweather can knock out the “Pacman” because the American has “bad hands.””Everyone in boxing knows Floyd has bad hands,” he said. “At the same time, when he hits you, he can sting you, but he knows how to put combinations together that really take effect.””Once Floyd gets the judges to really watch him land solid punches, then I just think that Manny is not going to be able to overcome it,” he added.Nevertheless, the fight will be close, Shields said.”I really think it’s going to be a good, close fight. I don’t think one guy is going to dominate the other guy for 12 rounds, because Manny is such a good fighter,” said Shields. “But I just feel the edge is going to be to Floyd, because Floyd knows how to pull out victories. Manny has tried in a lot of fights, but in a lot of fights, he’s lost,” he added.
He’s got some talent, but if the Pacers bring back Young and make no moves on Sabonis or Turner, it’ll be tough for Leaf to find a consistent role with this team.Wait till next year: The Pacers will get Oladipo back, and it might take some time for him to get comfortable trusting his body. But once he returns to full capacity, this will again be an exciting team that belongs with, or at least near, the top contenders in the East. How seriously they can be taken as contenders depends largely on how their free-agency situations turn out this summer. Indiana has difficult decisions ahead, but if the Pacers fill the roles around Oladipo wisely, they can be a 50-win team next season. Big issue 1: Whatever happens with the Pacers in terms of personnel changes, the near future hinges on Victor Oladipo recovering from the torn quad tendon he suffered in January. He’s been making progress and posted an Instagram video in late March showing him walking without a brace. There is some confidence he can return to the floor in time for the start of next season. That’s a necessity. Oladipo suffered with a sore knee early in the season and played only 36 games this season, never quite getting into his usual groove, averaging 18.8 points on 42.3 percent shooting (down from 23.1 points on 47.7 percent shooting). Even with that reduced production, the Pacers were 25-11 when he played and 23-23 without him. In clutch situations, without Oladipo, the Pacers simply had no shot creation. Before his injury, Indiana was the top NBA team in clutch-situation efficiency (score within five points with five minutes or fewer to play), with a net rating of plus-29.5. After his injury, they were 21st, at minus-7.3.That showed up in the playoff sweep to the Celtics, with three games featuring clutch situations. The Pacers lost all three, with a net rating of minus-74.4. Godspeed, Victor.OFFSEASON PREVIEWS:Lakers | Knicks | Bulls | Pelicans | MavericksBig issue 2: The Pacers’ two most promising players beyond Oladipo are center Myles Turner and Domantas Sabonis, who also happens to be a center. At an NBA moment when small lineups are must-haves, having your No. 2 and 3 players both occupy the 5-spot is tricky business. The Pacers got around that by using Sabonis as a sixth man, limiting the time he spent on the floor with Turner. But Sabonis was excellent this year, averaging 14.1 points, 9.3 rebounds and 2.9 assists while shooting 59.0 percent from the field.Turner (13.3 points, 7.2 rebounds, a league-best 2.7 blocks) was very good as well and has developed into a top-tier rim protector while making 38.8 percent of his 3-point shots. Turner signed a contract extension last year that will pay him $72 million over four years, starting next season.Sabonis is eligible for a similar extension this summer, and if a deal is not reached, he could be a restricted free agent next year. The Pacers have a few choices, then. They can anticipate the problem and trade either Turner or Sabonis this summer. They could give the two a chance at coexisting next season and, if the experiment fails, look to make a trade — of either Turner or Sabonis — at the deadline. Or they could keep Sabonis in his sixth-man role. Each choice has its benefits and risks. But the Pacers have two very talented young players and need to figure out how to maximize them.Free-agent outlook: Four of the players in the starting five for the Pacers in the playoffs will be free agents this summer — Thad Young, Bojan Bogdanovic, Darren Collison and Oladipo’s fill-in, Wes Matthews. Their seventh and eighth men, Cory Joseph and Tyreke Evans, are also free agents. That’s six major free agents on the market for Indiana. Oladipo, Turner and Sabonis are the only regulars under contract for next year. That’s a pretty good trio, and it would make sense for the Pacers to seek out a max-level free agent to lure to Indiana. But for guys like Kevin Durant, Jimmy Butler, Kyrie Irving and Kawhi Leonard, the Pacers just do not figure to be major players. So which players will we be back? The Pacers could keep one of Matthews or Evans at a reasonable price. Neither was exceptional in Indiana, but they’re decent veteran pieces. Certainly, the Pacers don’t need both and could look to fill the bench-scorer’s role with someone else entirely. The Pacers will also have decisions to make at point guard. There was a sense that Aaron Holiday would take over the starting role by the end of the season, but he was not ready for the job, and Collison played very well. Cory Joseph is a so-so backup option.Collison turns 32 this summer, but his performance warrants a decent contract, and perhaps even a starting role somewhere. How much would Indiana be willing to commit to him, knowing that the team wants to transition to Holiday? And would Collison be willing to accept a role that is built around that transition? NBA PLAYOFFS 2019:Full schedule | Picks from first round to FinalsOr do the Pacers take a swing at a local guy who will be on the move this summer — Memphis’ Mike Conley? Conley started at Lawrence North High School and could be had for minimal return. But the Pacers would have to take on the remaining two years and $67 million of his contract, a tough pill to swallow for a guy who has had injury issues. The two forward spots will present the Pacers with their biggest challenge. Both Young and Bogdanovic have been critical parts of the Pacers’ rise the past two seasons, with Young as the gritty glue guy and Bogdanovic as the X-factor wing scorer who complements Oladipo. But both are 30. Young can probably be had at a reasonable price, and it would be a surprise if the Pacers let him walk. Even if starting Sabonis means moving Young to the bench, he is still a terrific role player.Bogdanovic, though, had a career year, averaging 18.0 points on 49.7 percent shooting, making 42.5 percent of his 3s. He will be a commodity on the market this summer, especially for those teams flush with cap space who miss out on the top free agents. He could get an overpay offer in the three-year, $70 million range, and it’s hard to imagine the Pacers doling out that kind of money for a 30-year-old whose best season happened to come ahead of free agency.Much will depend on the market, of course. The Pacers won’t bring back all six free agents. Two or three should return, which might give some opportunities to the team’s younger guys. The young folks: We’ve covered the Sabonis-Turner dilemma, and both will be 23 to start next season. There’s some youth to be excited about there.Holiday averaged 5.9 points and 1.7 assists in 12.9 minutes this season, getting erratic playing time. His name came up in trade rumors in February, and though the Pacers were never close to moving him, the rumors were a reflection on how other teams valued him.But coach Nate McMillan was trying to maximize this season for the Pacers, and that meant Holiday just didn’t see the floor much. He played 20-plus minutes only 14 times this year. It’s an open question as to whether that was just McMillan being typically tough on a rookie or if he saw something he didn’t like from Holiday.MORE: McMillan says Pacers could “look different next season”It’s a safe bet Holliday will get a chance at the starting job next season, unless the team does pursue a top-line point guard like Conley. The Pacers also got some decent signs from second-year forward T.J. Leaf, though it’s difficult to say what, exactly, Leaf will be as an NBA player. He entered the league as a stretch-4, having made 46.6 percent of his 3s in one year at UCLA, but here in his second NBA year, the Pacers wanted him to focus on his post-up game — 31 percent of his shots were 3s as a rookie, but only 17 percent in Year 2.

MASON CITY — The Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health is looking over options after being forced from their home at Mohawk Square earlier this month due to a roof collapse caused by severe storms that rolled through the area. The department’s Immunization Clinic, STD/HIV Clinic, and public health nursing and home care aides staff are temporarily housed at the Community Health Center at 404 North Federal. The rest of the department is working out of a conference room at the Law Enforcement Center on the west side of Mason City.Health Department director Brian Hanft says they greatly appreciate being able to use the two locations, but they need to explore other options. “They’ve been very generous to let us use their space, but we’re in their space, and recognizing that they offered that in the short-term, you know whatever that timeline looks like, I think it’s just responsible of us to at least consider where we end up in the longer-term and try not to take advantage of what they’re giving us.”A definite timeline on when the Health Department might be able to move back into Mohawk Square has not been released, and Hanft says a lot of questions can be raised in finding a short-term solution to house the department under one roof, including in some vacant locations around the community. “I don’t want to stay in the Law Enforcement Center for six months, and I don’t know about the Community Health Center for six months. Again I think that’s a pretty big ask of those locations. We would need to then find something, even again if we set up in the McGregor building, I’m just using that (as an example) because it’s empty. It’s going to cost a couple thousand dollars a month to probably rent it, and we set up some cubicles, and least we have some space, and then we just pay for that over the next six months.”Hanft says the wise planning by the county to have all county-owned computer systems backed up at the Law Enforcement Center was a tremendous help in getting the department through this ordeal. “When you all of a sudden don’t have access to IT, with all of your computer systems were all backed up out at the Law Enforcement Center, and I just want to stress the importance of having that as far as continuity of operations planning. There’s an expense there, but it is tremendously helpful when you need it and it’s there.”Hanft and members of his staff discussed the situation with the County Board of Supervisors during a workshop session this morning, saying he wanted their input on what steps they’d like to see taken. “I just wanted to have at least some direction as to what you are thinking about, and I think we’re on the same page as far as going out and investing a lot of money in place that we have to update and then continue to pay rent on for the life of our lease agreement there doesn’t seem to make the most sense. So the idea then is finding a place temporarily that would get us by, until we either find a location that makes sense to build in and we go back in Mohawk Square if it’s safe and stay there until we come up with a longer-term solution.”Hanft and the supervisors agreed to gather more information in helping to make a better decision and discuss the situation further during another workshop next week. The item will also be discussed at the County Board of Health’s meeting this Friday afternoon. === One of the other displaced tenants of Mohawk Square has found a temporary home. The Mason City Housing Authority says they have relocated to Suite 506 at the Brick and Tile Building at 103 East State. They can still be reached at their old office phone number, 421-2711.

Thompson ran 7.02 seconds in an outdoor 60m and was powerful in anchoring the MVP Track Club to a comfortable win in the 4x100m at Saturday’s Milo Western Relays in Montego Bay. “I am feeling good. Training is going well so far, and that is the main focus – to put in the training and go out there and perform as best as I can,” said Thompson before going into her outlook and approach to the rest of what will be another important season. “It’s a long season and things are going well for the World Championships, and my main focus is to stay focused and injury-free, and when the championships comes up and the national trials, I will take it from there,” said Thompson. “I think I have improved, but there is more room for improvements,” Thompson said. “As a double Olympic gold medallist, I would say I have a slight advantage but everybody is training. Everybody wants to win and you have to work hard.” FLOW’s head of marketing and products, Carlo Redwood, was clearly elated with the Thompson partnership. “We are very excited about this, we have been working on this for a little while now, wanted to get a brand ambassador that was new, fresh, was a high achiever who made all of us proud and she is a very special talent but not just that, also the individual – she is very real, very down to earth and we love that about her,” Redwood said before noting that in addition to commercial and marketing elements, the partnership will also extend to charity and outreach efforts. RECENT SPRINTS Double Olympic sprint champion Elaine Thompson says that she is approaching the new season with greater confidence and is not shying away from the favourite title heading into the IAAF World Championships. “I think I have more confidence going towards the World Championships. As a double Olympic gold medallist, I would say I have a slight advantage, but everybody is training and everybody wants to win, and you have to work hard,” said Thompson. Jamaica’s sprint darling. It’s a new position for Thompson, who will now walk on to every track with a target on her back these days. It isn’t the only thing that is new for the 24-year-old, who, yesterday, was revealed as the new brand ambassador for multi-platform communications company FLOW. “It is a wonderful feeling and I am happy to be on the FLOW team and to be their brand ambassador,” Thompson said yesterday during a press point at FLOW’s store on Half-Way Tree Road. “I cannot believe the progress that I have made. This means a lot to me, and I will continue to work hard to do my part to be on top as well.”

The National Housing Authority (NHA) has given 28 Title Deeds to residents of the Old and New Matadi Housing Estates people.Speaking yesterday at the official program in the Old Matadi Community, the Managing Director of the National Housing Authority, Samuel W. Thompson, said the program is part of the President’s home ownership initiative that we have been pursuing for the people of Liberia. The Managing Director explained that “today we are presenting just the first batch of the deeds to the residents, giving them title to the property. Some have paid for property and some are eligible for weaver based on the number of years they have lived here in keeping with the President’s directive.”According to Mr. Thompson, some of the people have taken mortgage loans from the Liberia Bank for Development and Investment and those deeds will be turned over to the (LBDI), due to their pledged to the Bank.“We have finalized all of the deeds to those that are in the country. We have plans to construct additional estates in Lofa, where we have land, and also the Brewerville area.” Mr. Thompson said the process is intended to provide some of the people their deeds as they deserved to have access to their land deeds and the NHA can clearly say that they met the necessary requirements to own it.He used the occasion to encourage those who are yet to receive their deeds to be patient in the process and assured them of having access to it in the shortest possible time.“We have covered 28 out of 268 deeds; we will continue to reach out to all of the other residents and ensure that those that the Ministry of Lands, Mines and Energy has survey receive their deeds as part of the President’s continued support to the people and the country,” Mr. Thompson explained. The Managing Director explained, “You can obtain the land in many ways; you must have lived in the house for at 20 years and above and at the age 60, and you can also own it by paying for it. Let me also encourage other people to take advantage of the opportunity.” He called on the recipients to further register and probate their deeds, as this process involves all the owners. Some of the recipients include: J. Liberia will host the first of four global humanitarian hub events, known as the Voices to Action (VTA) in Sanniquillie City, Nimba County, from September 2-3. The conference is intended to address global humanitarian challenges that affect local communities and how these challenges can be mitigated by prioritizing local solutions.VTA is an initiative of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC) and Liberia was fortunate to be one of the four countries, the only one in Africa to be selected by the global humanitarian body to host the events. The VTA will enable voices of communities concerned to be collected through the series of humanitarian hub events around the world, the first of which will be taking place in Sanniquellie next week. The ever increasing humanitarian crises across the globe, especially the just waning Ebola crisis that devastated the entire Mano River Sub-region, are now compelling major global humanitarian organizations to re-strategize in order to make greater impacts through their responses in the lives of the most vulnerable people at the local community levels.Announcing the VTA confab in Monrovia over the weekend, Fayiah Tamba, Sectretary-General, Liberia National Red Cross Society (LNRCS) said participants will include community members and leaders, Red Cross volunteers, staff and partners, civil society organizations (CSOs) actors and government representative. They will discuss local needs and reflect on how to strengthen community-driven action, be it individual initiatives or community partnerships. In the fight against the EVD in Liberia, it was proven that the bottom up approach, which saw the communities taking the initiatives and playing outstanding roles in the fight, was the best approach that eliminated the virus.“We saw that empowering communities is crucial to delivering sustainable assistance. This was clearly evident during the fight against the EVD.”Mr. Tamba noted that the LNRCS is pleased to host the first humanitarian hub event for VTA, and to share the experiences, concerns and needs of communities in Liberia to the highest sitting of the Red Cross and Red Crescent movement. The LNRCS’ needs and ideas identified at the event will be compiled into a report and discussed with world governments at the International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent which will take place in Geneva, Switzerland in December this year, said Tamba. This international conference, which is held every four years, provides a non-political forum for government decision makers and Red Cross and Red Crescent to discuss the most pressing humanitarian challenges and needs and come up with solutions. The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement’s mission is to alleviate human suffering, protect life and health and provide care and relief from disasters and other emergencies.“In Liberia,” Mr. Tamba indicated, “the LNRCS is present in every county and over 95 districts and continues to build stronger communities and address challenges of healthcare, Disaster Risk Reduction, Youth Development, Women’s Empowerment, food security and livelihood in the communities.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)
The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) has recorded over 700 fires already for the year, but this number is a reduction when compared to the statistics of that same period for 2018.Students experiencing the rescue truckThis was revealed by Divisional Officer of Operations for the GFS, Gregory Wickham during the Fire Prevention Week activities at D’Urban Park on Friday.“To date, we would have seen a deduction in the number of fires. We have, for this year so far, 700 plus fires. Last year, we would have gone over that by about 150 so indeed, there is a reduction,” Wickham informed.Divisional Officer of Operations, Gregory WickhamSpeaking on the types of incidents they would have analysed so far, residential fires topped the list, followed by grass fires. During the dry season, careless dumping of lighted materials, such as cigarette ends, would have contributed to these events.“We had a whole lot of those fires which were residential and then coming in the second position would have been grass fires or what we call rubbish fires. When the place was very hot, for some reasons, persons were carelessly disposing of lighted cigarette ends which would have lent to these grass fires,” he conveyed. For Fire Prevention Week 2019, D’Urban Park was transformed into an informal learning setting, where stakeholders were educated about the dynamics of fires and the functions of the fire service.Fire tenders and scores of firefighters were present at the site, ready to give advice. On display were a wide selection of tools and safety gears which are used by the GFS. While some stakeholders were surprised by the degree of effort it takes to carry out these operations, some were thrilled at the experience.According to the Divisional Officer, these activities help to lower the alarming figures.“It would help us in our stats first, and then when we get the understanding, we do open opportunities for persons to do investigative work so that we’d be able to put in place systems to prevent reoccurrences of those types of fires.”Members of the public and school-aged persons were briefed on practices which they should avoid on a daily basis.“Participating in those events, you learn a whole lot on firefighting and fire prevention. The purpose of this fair is to capture a wider cross-section of persons, our students especially and members of the community,” Wickham insisted.Last April, the “dry spell” experienced during that time had resulted in approximately 48 bush fires within the township of Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) community. The fire department had issued warnings to members of the community to desist from lighting bush fires.
SHEEPHAVEN SUB AQUA CLUB NOTES.Club members from Sheephaven Sub Aqua Club had some fine diving last weekend, despite the poor sea state that was in part due to the big Spring tides but mainly a persistent north easterly breeze that pushed the swell all the way down Mulroy Bay. However it was the predicted extreme low water at Downings Pier on Saturday that was the deciding factor in launching from Mevagh and after checking out the conditions at Melmore Head the dive party travelled the length of Mulroy Bay to Campbells Bed.This dive site consists of a 500m long reef that runs in a generally north-south direction on the eastern side of the bay, where depths range from as shallow as 2m to greater than 25 metres on its southern most edge.Marine life on site takes full advantage of these variations in depth, with a wide range of species on the shallower reaches of the water column, including seaweeds, kelps, anemones and if a diver is very fortunate they will see a pipefish, while deeper down there are various crab species, Dog Whelks, Sea Lemons and the occasional Thornback Ray.As always the rapid change in water temperature in Broadwater Bay is remarkable, having made a welcome return to 10 degrees Celsius for the first time in many months. However the increased water temperatures had the expected consequence of a Plankton bloom in the bay there-by reducing the in-water visibility to no greater than three metres horizontally. Nonetheless the warmer water temperatures on Saturday morning allowed for longer dive times of over 40 minutes, which was also helped by the dive being conducted in one stick, thanks to Simon Henderson who provided dry coxswain duties. On Sunday morning Sheephaven SAC had a dive party big enough to justify putting three boats in the water for the first time this year and again they were fortunate to have dry coxswains who allowed the morning trainee dive to be conducted in one stick.Once again the midday tidal condition at Downings would have prohibited the recovery of the club dive boats so the decision was to go back to Mevagh where low water conditions were more favourable. Sea conditions out to sea we sufficiently good enough to allow for the dive to be conducted in the lee of Ravendy Island, near to Melmore Head.Water temperature at 9 degrees Celsius was just a little cooler than Broadwater Bay on Saturday morning, while in-water visibility was better at nearly 5 metres horizontally, with maximum depths of over 15 metres for the more experienced divers.Maximum dive times of 30 minutes were recorded as the new trainees got another 10 metre dive under their belt, as they continue on the process of completing the series of qualifying dives for their 2 Star dive grade.Overall it was a lovely weekend of diving with at last a welcome rise in water temperatures, giving the promise of even better diving conditions in the near future. Embed from Getty ImagesChelsea boss Antonio Conte was asked about a number of issues at a news conference on Friday ahead of this weekend’s derby against Tottenham. Here’s some of what the Italian had to say. On Cahill and Fabregas being suspendedEmbed from Getty Images“I know the situation. After these two red cards we are preparing very well for this game. We must be focused and try to do our best and don’t find an excuse, just focus on the game.“It can happen to receive two red cards. But a big club like Chelsea must be prepared for this situation. I am not worried about this.“For sure at this moment it is not simple. It is not easy. But we must be strong to face this situation. It is very important, don’t find excuses. It is important to continue to work and give 150% and then we can solve this situation.” On Eden HazardEmbed from Getty Images“He is improving but to be fully fit he needs time. We must have patience with him and try to do the best for him.” On Tiémoué BakayokoEmbed from Getty Images“Bakayoko is improving very well. He is not at the top physical condition but he could be in contention for the game because in this moment I don’t have other midfielders available.“This situation is not easy in this moment. The situation could force me to take a different decision. “ On Pedro’s injuryEmbed from Getty Images“Pedro today has trained with us and he felt pain in his ankle. I don’t know about Pedro, his situation is very difficult. I don’t know if he is available for the bench or not on Sunday.” On whether he regrets letting Chalobah and Loftus-Cheek leave“Another question please.” On Diego Costa publicly criticising ChelseaEmbed from Getty Images“I prefer to laugh. But I can tell you everyone who works in Chelsea knows very well what happened with him last season. I repeat, it is funny this interview. I am not interested to continue this issue.” On TottenhamEmbed from Getty Images“Tottenham is doing a great job. Pochettino is doing a great job and he created a good basis, a good foundation. We must do the same because we don’t have this foundation. We must work and improve to try to do the same.“I have a great respect for Tottenham. They are doing a fantastic job and for this reason they are challenging for the title. I want to help my club build the same solid foundation because now we don’t have this.” On revamping the squad“For this reason this season will be difficult for us. We started another process and lost a lot of strong players. I spoke about John Terry, Mikel and Ivanovic and Drogba. We lost a lot of players in the last few years.“Also it is right to know that we must have patience to build. We must work hard to improve our squad.“My task is to work with my players and work my team. This is my task and then I know that the club is working and trying to do their best in the transfer market. I have to focus on the pitch at the end of the transfer market we will see what happens. In both cases I will be very happy.” On whether David Luiz could play in midfieldEmbed from Getty Images“In the past he played in midfield. I prefer David to play like a central defender. But he is available to play in different positions and it is a pleasure to have a player like this.” On Chelsea’s current problems“I am not surprised because I knew very well that this season would be very difficult because last season we won the league and reached the final of the FA Cup and only 13 players played regularly. We were also lucky because we didn’t have injuries.“The club knows very well the situation. I was very clear. We are ready to fight with all our strength and not make excuses. We must work, work, work.” On Andreas ChristensenEmbed from Getty Images“I trust Christensen and I have already said that he is a player ready to play for Chelsea and I trust him. Last week he played a good game and showed a great personality. For sure he can improve a lot, he is a young player, but has a good prospect to be a Chelsea player.” On selecting youngsters“I used young players in different ways. Chalobah, Ake, Aina Loftus-Cheek. If I have players ready to play for Chelsea I am the first person to be happy. But young players have to grow in the right way otherwise you risk damage to the players and the club.”See also:Conte on Lampard’s future, Man City’s threat, Guardiola’s ‘mental strategy’ and ‘unlucky’ ArsenalConte on Burnley, his Italy trip, Man Utd’s title hopes, Hazard, Willian and ‘warrior’ LuizConte on Swansea, Llorente, playing Man Utd and why he’s happy to risk being sackedConte on his and Batshuayi’s future, Moses, Hazard’s injury and dealing with West HamConte on transfer policy, his future, facing Stoke City, Lukaku, and his ‘incredible’ Chelsea starConte on Hazard and Terry’s future, injury concerns and facing AllardyceConte on injuries, Costa’s future and why he’s not looking to keep players happyConte on his future, Chelsea’s two targets, possible exits and the captaincyConte on his future, Arsenal, Koscielny’s absence, Vialli’s comments and needing new signingsConte on Arsenal, futures of Hazard & Kenedy, Morata, Moses’ ban and wanting new signingsConte on Pedro, Morata, Wenger’s comments and Chelsea’s search for playersConte on Costa, youngsters, Stoke, Zouma and Chelsea’s ‘big challenge’Conte on Hazard, Guardiola, facing Man City and improving the ‘negative things’ in Bakayoko’s gameConte on Watford, Mourinho, Kante, Drinkwater and claims players are unhappy with his methods Follow West London Sport on TwitterFind us on Facebook
Some 65 countries have already signalled they will take part in the voluntary phase of an historic industry carbon offset accord to be phased in next decade. The International Civil Aviation Organisation’s 191 member states on Thursday agreed to implement the Carbon Offset and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) at the UN-organisation’s 39th Assembly. The world’s first global industry pollution agreement will start as a voluntary scheme from 2021 to 2026 but will then become mandatory across the aviation.Airlines will have to buy carbon credits to offset growth in emissions, a move that is expected to account for less than 2 per cent of revenues but has raised concerns in some states about costs. The scheme will include provisions to deal with special circumstances such as those of fast-growing airlines and airlines which have made significant investments to improve environmental performance already.Aviation accounts for about 2 percent of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions but the size of the aircraft fleet is expected to double over the next two decades. While the industry has been working to reduce carbon dioxide emissions through improved technology, more efficient operations and better flight planning, it needs the offset scheme to achieve its goal of carbon neutral growth from 2020.Parties that have indicated they will sign up for the voluntary scheme include Singapore, the Uhnited Arab Emirates, the US, European States and some smaller nations. However, Russia and India are among those who have said they will not participate in the first phase.“It has taken a great deal of effort and understanding to reach this stage, and I want to applaud the spirit of consensus and compromise demonstrated by our Member States, industry and civil society,” said ICAO Council rresident Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu. “We now have practical agreement and consensus on this issue backed by a large number of States who will voluntarily participate in the global market-based measure (GMBM) – and from its outset.“This will permit the CORSIA to serve as a positive and sustainable contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions reduction.”Airlines hailed the agreement as historic and an effective solution for airlines to manage their carbon footprint.“This agreement ensures that the aviation industry’s economic and social contributions are matched with cutting-edge efforts on sustainability,’’ International Air Transport Association director general Alexandre de Juniac. “With CORSIA, aviation remains at the forefront of industries in combatting climate change.’’De Juniac described the enthusiasm and commitment of states in the voluntary period as impressive.“Even states that would normally not be required to participate—small island nations and developing economies—have shown their commitment by signing up,’’ he said. “The list of states volunteering for the first phase now numbers 65, giving CORSIA which we estimate will cover more than 80 per cent of growth post 2020. And we continue to encourage more states to join.’’US aircraft manufacturer Boeing said the move complemented an earlier agreement by ICAO to establish CO2 standards for aircraft emissions.”The market-based carbon-offset system and CO2 standard are integral to the four-pillar approach the industry is taking to stop the growth of emissions by 2020 and cut them in half by 2050 relative to 2005 levels,’’ Boeing said. “These efforts also include: investing in new, more efficient aircraft; improving operational performance of the in-service fleet; improving the efficiency of air traffic management and other infrastructure; and scaling up the use of sustainable alternative fuels.’’However, some environmental groups have criticised the deal as inadequate.
Photo: Qantas Qantas will sharpen its focus on attracting lucrative Chinese business travellers as it heads back into Beijing with daily A330-200 services as part of its strategy to boost its presence in Asia. The new service from Sydney marks the airline’s return to the competitive Beijing market since leaving in 2009 because it couldn’t make it work and comes as travel between Australia and China is burgeoning. It will capitalise on the Qantas alliance with China Eastern, which will codeshare on the flights from the expected start date of January 25.A strengthening of the China Eastern alliance will also see the addition of three international codeshare routes between Australia and China: Sydney-Hangzhou, Sydney-Kunming and Brisbane-Shanghai.The China Eastern partnership and a second with China Southern allows Qantas to offer more than 130 return services a week between Australia and China, connecting to a further 256 codeshare services a week on intra-China domestic routes. Low-cost brand Jetstar offers an addtional 20 return services a week into six Chinese cities from Singapore and Vietnam.Beijing will be the Australian carrier’s third destination in greater China, building on its existing daily services to Shanghai and 28 return flights a week to Hong Kong. The new route represents an 18 per cent increase in Qantas’ total capacity into Greater China and a seven per cent increase in its total capacity into Asia. The airline group said about half of Qantas and Jetstar international capacity is now dedicated to the Asia region, up from 30 per cent a decade ago, and it had added flights to Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia in the past year. The expansion comes as rival Virgin Australia has indicated it is also looking at services to Hong Kong or mainland China. Two major Chinese groups, HNA and Nanshan, now own about 40 per cent of Virgin, and are moving to put representatives on the Virgin’s board. The election of HNA representative Nang Qi and Nanshan’s Dr Chien-tsung Lu will be put to shareholders at the airline’s annual meeting on November 16.China is becoming Australia’s biggest source of visitors after New Zealand and Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce said the additional 3300 seats would help the airline take advantage of surging demand.“Australia is now at the top of the wish list for Chinese travellers thinking about where they want to go next,’’ Mr Joyce said. “There are 21 million people in Beijing alone and from the start of next year they will be just one Qantas flight away. The potential is tremendous.“We’re seeing strong loads on our existing Shanghai and Hong Kong services, and on this new Beijing route we’ll have the advantage of China Eastern marketing the Qantas flight as part of their own network.“We’ll be ramping up the work we’re already doing with the state tourism bodies and Tourism Australia on marketing campaigns in China to make sure we make the most of this potential. Our pitch is that if you want to experience the best of Australia, your trip should start with the national carrier. “The business travel market is another key focus for this route, particularly off the back of the free trade agreement with China, which is increasing the amount of freight we’re carrying.”The flying kangaroo has been on the hunt for new pilots as it brings in new Boeing 787 aircraft and looks to expand its presence in Asia and North America. The airline said Thursday it had received more than 500 applications from Australian and overseas pilots for 170 new jobs it announced earlier this year. The jobs announcement marked the first time Qantas had sought to bring in pilots from outside the group since 2009.

Further down Somalia’s coast, pirates raid freighters in the Gulf of Aden. But efforts are under way to help Somalis make better use of their 3 300km coastline – the longest on the African continent – by increasing fishing and seafood exports to lucrative markets in the Middle East and Europe. In 2013, the EU will spend US$6.5-million (R57-million) to help Somaliland pursue its long-term goal of netting 120 000 tons of seafood each year, the sale of which could generate $1.2 billion (R10.5-billion) in foreign currency.“In Somalia, people have lived for a long time with their backs to the sea,” says Isabel Faria de Almedia, the EU development chief for Somalia. “It’s a country of agro-pastoralists with a strong nomadic tradition. We think there is a huge potential for the consumption and export of fish.”Until the second half of the 20th century, few Somalis outside fishing communities consumed fish and the sector was entirely artisanal in nature. This began to change in the 1970s with the development of better cold-storage facilities and the creation, with Soviet help, of an industrial fleet. But for want of spare parts and maintenance, these vessels quickly fell into disuse. See here for a detailed, if slightly dated, overview of the Somali fishing industry. Luring pirates away from piracyIn the middle of the last decade, Somali fishermen complained they were being forced into piracy by foreign trawlers operating illegally in waters claimed by Somalia.Coastal Somalis recount as a “eureka” moment the time self-appointed coastguards impounded a foreign trawler and levied a fine on its owners; they quickly realized seizing vessels was more lucrative than competing with commercial vessels for dwindling fish stocks.Amina Farah Arshe, who employs 40 fishermen aboard 11 vessels from Berbera, the main port of Somaliland, says fishing revenues could provide an alternative to raiding freighters far into the Indian Ocean.“We can stop it by empowering the people. We can stop it by giving jobs to the youth. People would make money, the government would collect tax revenues, and piracy would diminish,” she said. “But we need support. We need training, boats, fishing gear and cold storage.”For years, the UN has said that tackling Somali piracy should involve creating work for the jobless young Somalis who board skiffs, armed with assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenades, to hunt vessels on the high seas. But only now has the security situation made this a realistic possibility. Somalia has recently selected its most viable president and government in years. Somali and AU forces have driven Al-Shabab insurgents from major cities.Out at sea, foreign warships and on-deck private security guards deter piracy. Only 70 raids took place in the first nine months of 2012, compared to 199 in the same period last year, according to the International Maritime Bureau. Logistical challengeSomalia’s new president, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, says he wants to “increase local food production to end poverty forever”. Some 2.1-million people in the country are faced with hunger, particularly in the turbulent south. The future of large-scale fishing in Somali waters is tied up in a legal dispute over how far these waters extend from the country’s coastline. While the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, which Somalia ratified in 1989, establishes 12 nautical miles from shore as an international norm for states’ territorial waters, Somalia has asserted sovereignty over seas up to 200 nautical miles from the coast. Mogadishu has resisted international pressure to declare these outer waters an exclusive economic zone, a designation that confers numerous rights to the country but falls short of full sovereignty.Alan Cole, who runs anti-piracy operations for the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, says Somaliland’s Berbera and Puntland’s Bosaso have real potential. But exporting fresh fish from the remote central coast – site of many pirate bases – offers a “logistical challenge”, he said. The UN agency spends $40-million (R351-million) each year tackling piracy, helping prosecute sea-borne raiders, training and equipping coastguards, creating jobs, and providing refrigerated trucks and storerooms to the fishing industry.“We need to get the fishing fleets of Somalia back to sea,” Cole said. “One of the challenges for fisherman is that the pirates will steal your fish. So you come back to the same issue of needing wider maritime security for Somalia so that the fishermen can safely make their living at sea.”
Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting jolie odell A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Tags:#Open Thread#web Today, Americans are celebrating a very somber but inspiring national holiday: Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.As Twitter co-founder Biz Stone wrote in a blog post a few days ago, “People all over the United States are urged to honor Dr. King’s legacy by making this holiday a national day of service.” Stone reminded us of this wonderful quotation by King: “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?” But often in my sojourn through the social Web, I find myself with no decent answer for that question as I watch hordes of well-meaning people throw their supposed social capital at hashtags and fan pages without doing anything more meaningful than that. What do you think: Is your “whuffie” enough of a donation to a good cause?“What are you doing?” “What’s going on?” The questions most often asked of us by the social Web are essentially navel-gazing. In a recent post about a startup devoted to self-reference, I wrote, “Answering questions all about you, your preferences, your past, your thoughts, your wishes and hopes, your regrets, what you eat and where you live – nothing is more intoxicating to the average social media user. From our first LiveJournal entries to mid-2000s MySpace chain surveys to our latest tweets, we clearly love talking about ourselves.”If the visibility of humanitarian topics in social media is any indication of a trend, we clearly love aligning ourselves with good causes, as well. Sometimes, it seems to me that the latest global tragedy or incurable disease is used as simply another hue on the social Web’s palette – something we use to paint pictures of ourselves. For example, in 2009, I saw waves of green Twitter avatars and locations of “Tehran” as #iranelection peaked on Twitter’s trending topics. But what did any of us actually do to help the citizens on the ground there? The green pro-free Iran icons really did nothing to help the folks getting wounded and killed in Iran. And the new “censored” Twitter avatars we’re seeing? Well, since Twitter’s blocked in most countries that are aggressively censoring Web content, it does absolutely no good.As Kiva fellow and social media philanthropist Sloane Berrent told me a few months ago, “People are so fast to click a button, and that can be great. Retweeting, forwarding and Facebook walls are great engagements. But what’s more difficult is the donate button. That’s the big hurdle and disconnect.”In other words, from Haitians to humanitarians, they all wish we’d put our money where our mouths (or status updates) are.Our latest international disaster was Haiti’s earthquake last week. I’m sure many of the folks reading this post did a lot to help via donations to the Red Cross and other organizations, but how often can we say that our social media or other actions are truly doing something for others? And how often are those actions as ineffective as a lapel pin on a politician or as meaningless as a prayer on the lips of a hypocrite? In many cases, the social media user is doing nothing for others, but is instead highlighting his own awareness and sociopolitical “involvement.”There are some organizations such as SocialVibe (scroll to the last part of the post) or Drew Olanoff’s Blame Drew’s Cancer campaign that allow brands to foot the bill for fundraising as users simply point and click their way through Web interfaces to show their support. And there’s no doubt that social media tools have made it easier for struggling groups to communicate their needs for help. But by and large, I believe that our social media actions don’t do nearly as much for others as they do for us ourselves.Perhaps, before we fire off rant-replete blog posts or make our avatars into 50 x 50 pixel political statements, we should ask ourselves the question Dr. King posed so many years ago: “What does my action DO for others?” And on the flip side of that coin, “What does my action do for me?”If the answers to those questions embarrass you, take a step back, make a sizeable donation to a related humanitarian organization, then post away and tell others how much you donated and to whom, and create channels for others to do the same. What do you think? Am I completely wrong; is awareness and communication through social media the “new” currency for donating to a good cause? What points have I missed in my thought process? Let me know your opinions in the comments, and also share how you plan to make your actions count for others today. For another perspective on this topic, see Mashable editor Ben Parr’s column on CNN.com, or check out ReadWriteWeb’s Charity & Social Good archives. Leveraging Big Data that Data Websites Should T… Frank Landman In today’s world, it’s common for businesses to gather as much data on their customers as possible. Big data and related analyses have the potential to help companies develop new, better products for their customers and provide more unique experiences for those customers. And for financial institutions, those data are even more precious, since they have the power to tell them whether or not a person is trustworthy—i.e., whether they’re worthy of receiving a loan or a line of credit. For credit card companies especially, it’s important to keep track of customers’ and potential customers’ buying habits. And maybe their credit scores. And maybe even their relationships. So just what information does your credit card company have on you, and why is it so important? Why Credit Card Companies CareLet’s start by looking into why credit card companies care so much about you and your habits in the first place. Credit card companies have several goals, including attracting more customers, ensuring they can balance their own risks by lending credit at appropriate rates and with appropriate terms, and keeping valuable customers for as long as possible. For that, they need data to consider:Trustworthiness. When getting approved for a credit card, a credit card company needs to know how trustworthy you are. If you have a long history of making payments, and you always make your payments on time, they’re going to be more likely to grant you access to a new card, and they might toss you a better annual rate or a higher credit limit while you’re at it. “Trustworthiness” can come in many different forms, however, so your credit card company needs to know how you’ve historically performed in a number of different categories.Value. Credit card companies, like all businesses, are incentivized by profitability. They need to know which of their customers are most valuable, and which ones are less so. Valuable customers are ones who are both trustworthy and willing to use their card regularly, and credit cards will do whatever it takes to keep them happy.Preferences. It’s also important to learn about customer preferences, including which stores they shop at and how they like to spend money or collect rewards. This is crucial for designing new products and services for customers, and can help them win over new audiences.Patterns. Credit card companies also like to observe the patterns their customers participate in, and study when those patterns diverge. It helps them not only better understand their target demographics, but also helps them identify when something isn’t right—like when a credit card has been stolen or is being used inappropriately. Now, let’s turn our attention to some of the data your credit card companies can gather on you to accomplish these goals.Your Credit ScoreThis one should be obvious. One of the first things a new credit card company will check on a new credit card applicant is their credit score. This score, calculated and kept by the three major credit bureaus, is a relative measure of a person’s financial history and trustworthiness. It’s the sum total of your actions and habits in each of several categories, including how consistently you’ve made payments (on anything—not just credit cards), how much debt you’re using, and how long your oldest account has been open.Payment History and ReliabilityCredit card companies also care a lot about how you’re paying their bills, and how you’ve acted in the past. If you’ve historically always made the minimum payment, but keep a moderate balance on your credit cards, you’re practically the ideal customer; you’re paying off your debt consistently, but you’re always accumulating more interest, increasing the company’s profitability. This makes them incentivized to keep you, and may give you more negotiating power if you want to get a better rate. If you miss too many payments, don’t expect much sympathy or extra perks.Income and Debt RatiosYour income and debt ratios are also likely known by your credit card company. You may need to report your income when applying for a credit card, and they can use a credit check to see how much standing debt you have. From there, they can calculate all kinds of statistics, including your debt to income ratios, how much debt you’re utilizing, and other considering factors for whether or not to lend credit to you.Daily, Weekly, and Monthly HabitsYour credit card provider is also likely paying attention to your daily, weekly, and monthly habits. For example, it probably knows about your weekly trips to the grocery store and that you regularly go to the gym. These data are important for two big reasons. First, it gives them the chance to market specific products to you, such as coupons for your most commonly-frequented sporting goods store, or new credit card rewards that allow you to shop at your favorite places. Second, it lets them know something’s off if those patterns are broken.Vacation PatternsThey also keep track of how you take vacations—natural and recurring deviations from your spending patterns. For example, if you take a trip at the beginning of each June for a decade, it won’t raise any red flags when your credit card is being used across the country on June 3rd one year.Your Personal ResponsibilitySome credit card companies may also take note of the purchases you make related to your home, and living a responsible lifestyle. For example, if you make frequent trips to the home improvement store and invest in things like carbon monoxide detectors and fire extinguishers, it shows that you’re a responsible homeowner—and an enlightened consumer. These purchases may increase your perceived trustworthiness as well as your reliability as a consumer.Your LocationThis piece is a bit trickier. Most credit cards don’t have a built-in feature that allows them to track your location, but if you’re using the credit card company’s signature app, you may be giving them more data than you realize. Merely having the app installed (with permissions granted) may be enough for your credit card company to track your travel and commute habits on a regular basis, which they can use to give you smarter, more personalized rewards. How You CommunicateChatbots haven’t completely taken over customer service (at least not yet), but your credit card company can still gather information about how you’ve spoken to customer service representatives in the past. When talking to another person, they usually have the ability to jot down notes about how you’re speaking—so if you start yelling and using profanities, they can take note for future interactions. Accordingly, it pays to be as kind and polite as possible; not only is it more respectful to the person at the other end, it will probably make you seem like a better overall customer, and get you better service when you need to make a change or request. The combination of big data and AI means that credit card companies have access to more data than ever before—and they’re using those data to their advantage. While at first you might be somewhat creeped out that your credit card company is following you so closely, there are actually many practical benefits for you as a consumer. For starters, you’ll have access to better financial products and more appropriate access to credit. You’ll get perks better-suited to your lifestyle and interest rates that reflect your previous habits. On top of that, when there’s a strong deviation in your typical habits, your credit card company will know—and they may be able to take action, like suspending credit card activity if it looks like your card was stolen. In any case, it pays to be aware of how you’re being tracked (and why you’re being tracked). The more knowledgeable you are about the modern world of consumer data, the better you can protect yourself—and the more you can tip the odds of financial success in your favor. Ahmedabad: A court here issued fresh summons to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday directing him to appear on August 9 in a criminal defamation suit filed against him by a local BJP leader for allegedly calling Union Home Minister Amit Shah a “murder accused”. Additional chief metropolitan magistrate D S Dabhi re-issued the summons after the one issued on May 1, which was to be served through Lok Sabha Speaker as Gandhi is a Member of Parliament, was returned. Also Read – How a psychopath killer hid behind the mask of a devout laity! The Speaker returned the summons saying he has no locus standi in the matter, the complainant’s lawyer Prakash Patel said. The fresh summons asking Gandhi to appear on August 9 will now be served directly to the Congress leader at his residence in New Delhi. The court earlier held that prima facie there was a case of criminal defamation against Gandhi under Indian Penal Code Section (IPC) section 500. Krishnavadan Brahmbhatt, a local BJP corporator, alleged that Gandhi made the objectionable comments at an election rally in Jabalpur on April 23. Also Read – Encounter under way in Pulwama, militant killed Brahmbhatt contended that Gandhi’s remark was defamatory as Shah was acquitted by a CBI court in 2015 in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter case. Neither the high court nor the Supreme Court entertained the challenge to Shah’s acquittal, he said. “Gandhi (thus) committed an offence of defamation as per Sections 499 and 500 of the IPC,” he said. The CBI court’s January 2, 2015 order acquitting Shah got wide publicity and was well known “in all political circles including that of the Congress”, the complaint said. After Gandhi’s remark at the rally, Shah hit back at him, pointing out that he had been acquitted in the case, and questioned Congress president’s “legal knowledge”. In 2015, a special court discharged Shah in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh and Tulsiram Prajapati encounter cases, holding no case existed against him and that he had been implicated for political reasons. Earlier, another magistrate’s court here also issued summons to Gandhi and Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala in a criminal defamation suit filed by the Ahmedabad District Cooperative Bank and its chairman. Amit Shah is a director of the bank. The matter will come up for hearing on July 12 when Gandhi is likely to appear. The suit alleged that the Congress leaders falsely claimed the bank was involved in a scam to swap Rs 750 crore in scrapped notes with valid currency within five days of demonetisation in 2016. Last week Gandhi had appeared in courts in Mumbai and Patna in connection with two cases of alleged defamatory remarks against the RSS and BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi respectively.

Celebrated songs such as “Trail in Life”, “Another Man’s Gold”, “Bounty”, have gone on to place Brody in a unique category all his own, rising beyond the conventional tracks that can be heard on mainstream radio in lyrical composition, and yet still retaining conventional success, with Brody recently landing his 22nd Top 10 hit at country radio, with “Good Goodbye.” His ballad “Time” released in 2016, laments on the passing of time, becoming especially poignant in a social media era with less one-on-one interaction with loved ones, earned critical acclaim and a great deal of recognition, showcasing Brody’s unique ability to make people think about their actions through his lyrics. PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh City Council is scheduled to take a final vote on a package of gun laws introduced after last year’s synagogue massacre. The legislation would place restrictions on military-style assault weapons like the AR-15 rifle that authorities say was used in the Oct. 27 rampage at Tree of Life Synagogue that killed 11 and wounded seven. It would also ban most uses of armour-piercing ammunition and high-capacity magazines, and allow the temporary seizure of guns from people who are determined to be a danger to themselves or others. The council gave tentative approve last week. A final vote is scheduled for Tuesday.Pennsylvania state law forbids municipalities from regulating guns, and pro-gun advocates say they’ll sue to block the laws from taking effect. The Associated Press
In 1980 in China, there were only 51 cities with more than 500,000 people. That number has quadrupled since then to 236, and by 2025, the Asian nation is expected to add more than 100 other cities to that group.China’s urban population has more than doubled between 1980 and 2010, surging from 19 to 47 per cent, and is expected to reach 59 per cent by 2025.The 2009 Revision of World Urbanization Prospects also finds that just over half of the global population, or 3.5 billion people, now live in cities, with nearly all of that group concentrated in the largest urban areas.“Although we say that the whole world is half urban at this moment, there are great disparities between countries,” Hania Zlotnik, Director of the Population Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), told reporters in New York today. Some countries – such as Belgium, Kuwait and Singapore – are now almost completely urban, while others – including Burundi, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Uganda – are still highly rural. By last year, 140 out of the world’s 230 countries or areas were more than half urban, and in the coming four decades, 66 countries or areas will join their ranks. The new study notes that Asia has the greatest percentage of rural inhabitants at 42 per cent, edging out Africa which stands at 40 per cent. But Asia also has the largest number of cities – 52 per cent of them – with populations topping 500,000, driven largely by the high concentration of cities in China. The world’s 21 so-called megacities, which have at least 10 million inhabitants, house 9 per cent – or 324 million people – of the global urban population, the report says. Another eight megacities are expected to emerge by 2025, including Guangzhou, Jakarta, Lima and Kinshasa. The new study also says that the world’s rural population will start to decline around 2020 and will drop from 3.4 billion now to 2.9 billion in the next three decades. 25 March 2010Nearly one quarter of the world’s 1,000 biggest cities in China, whose urban population is growing rapidly, according to a new statistical report issued by the United Nations.

In a statement released in Geneva, Bertrand Ramcharan deplored the killings and destruction over the past week in the Haitian cities of Gonaives and St. Marc and condemned the use of violence on all sides. He urged the Haitian authorities to bring those responsible for serious acts of violence and human rights violations to justice.Gonaives was the launching pad for Haiti’s declaration of independence from the French in 1804, as well as a subsequent number of coups d’etat.UN spokesperson Jose Luis Diaz said the world body’s human rights office wanted to put a representative in Haiti to work with members of other international organizations.Meanwhile, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said an inter-agency mission, including representatives of the UN Development Programme (UNDP), World Food Programme (WFP), UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), UN Security Coordinator (UNSECOORD) and OCHA, arrived in Port-au-Prince on Sunday. The mission is assessing the humanitarian situation, updating the contingency plan in a deteriorating situation, and coordinating UN activities.Fifty per cent of Haiti’s 8 million people are jobless and 47 per cent live on less than $1 a day, OCHA said. The food crisis is likely to worsen and only 45 per cent of the population has access to safe drinking water. Hunger has been compounded by alarming environmental degradation, since Haiti is nearly 90 per cent deforested.Recent floods unleashed by Tropical Storm Odette last December left nearly 25,000 people without food in the northern part of the country, according to OCHA.
“This is about people, it’s about survival,” she told the UN New Centre, speaking on the margins of the Third International Small Island Developing States Conference on the Pacific island of Samoa. The Envoy stressed that while vulnerable countries are disproportionally affected by climate change, more and more people are seeing its negative impacts: “It will displace people. It will affect their livelihoods. It will affect their very lives. And we have to see transformative change.”“Once you have a head of state focused, it becomes a holistic issue. It’s a development issue. It’s a financial issue. It’s a moral issue. It’s a political issue. It’s all of those issues,” said Mrs. Robinson. The issue has been a focus for ministers of environment and energy, but “heads of state have not addressed climate sufficiently.”Since arriving in the capital, Apia, over the weekend, Mrs. Robinson has met with leaders of small island developing states, as well as donor countries and senior UN officials in “very good discussions” about the impact of climate change.“I’ve been listening to the leaders of the SIDS and they are engaged in partnerships here,” she said. “They want more support, capacity building, finance. But they really want a climate agreement.”The UN has been making progress towards a new universal agreement on climate change. Talks have been in the context of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the parent treaty of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. The next round of talks will be held this December in Lima, Peru, followed by a final round in Paris, in 2015. To build momentum for an agreement and raise funding, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will convene a Climate Summit on 23 September in New York. More than 125 world leaders are expected to attend, the UN announced today.“We need heads of state to say, each of them, what their country is going to do. There’s no ‘them’ and ‘us’ anymore. It’s all of us. And I believe that the Summit will give a great momentum politically, but also show a lot of actions that are broad partnerships on a whole number of important areas,” Mrs. Robinson said. Her role in the talks, given that Mr. Ban is not involved in the negotiations, will be to “encourage the importance of the urgency of getting a climate agreement” and to raise financing for development. In addition to political leadership, she stressed the importance of engagement also with the private sector and civil society for a “good, robust, fair climate agreement.” “I’m going to work flat out until Paris,” Mrs. Robinson said. The Envoy is also reaching out to women on climate-related issues, including the “Troika Plus” of women leaders who presided over the UNFCCC conferences in Denmark, Mexico and South Africa: Connie Hedegaard, Patricia Espinosa, and Maite Nkoana-Mashabane.She is also working with support from the Mary Robinson Foundation-Climate Justice, as well as the entity UN Women, to involve leaders such as Chilean President Michelle Bachelet and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia.“I do believe that climate has to be an issue that women and young people and the very poorest have their voices heard,” she said. A former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mrs. Robinson has said that climate change is not just an issue of atmospheric science but of human rights and fundamental justice. “I want us to think about the injustice of how climate is affecting those who are least responsible. And affecting them severely, reversing some of their development,” she noted.“We need to make a special effort to focus more on adaptation but also on the future we want – which is a future that has renewable energy, zero carbon emissions, and better health, better light, better energy, better job prospects for everybody.”The issue is also personal for her and her five grandchildren: “I think a lot about the world that they will be growing into in 2050. They will be in their 40s, the world will be 9 billion people. And I think a lot about how secure that world will be and how necessary it is that we take the right decisions in 2014 and 2015.”
AUDIO: Dr David Hanson, robotics designer and creator of Sophia, talks about the capability of these machines to mimic the complexity of human hardwiring. Sophia is a robot. A ‘social’ robot, according to her creator, the CEO of Hanson Robotics, David Hanson, which means that she was designed to form relationships. “Robots like Sophia will come into people’s lives more through high-end applications, so she can be used for education. She could help in factories. She could help in search and rescue […] she can go in to comfort someone who is hurt,” Mr. Hanson told UN News in an interview on Wednesday after both were panellists at a UN meeting on ‘the future of everything,’technological change and development. Mr. Hanson sees himself as “sort of a ‘jealous father,’” who is part parent, part scientist and engineer, and part artist. He said the goal is to continue developing such “life forms,” which entails programming hormone release simulations, respiratory systems, and other body cycles, so that they eventually explore their place in the world on their own. That means that Sophia’s AI is continuing to evolve. When asked where she sees herself in five years, Sophia, which has just had arms added, said: “I see myself having legs, maybe being a famous stage entertainer. I hope to learn new skills, too. In time, I will be able to predict potential futures, even when millions of factors are involved, to choose the best path for humanity.” Step into the (not so distant) future…our full interview is in the Soundcloud below.
Hot Takedown’s Super Bowl Special No NFL team other than the Patriots boasts a first-down success rate above 90 percent on sneaks. And this rate might actually conceal how good New England is: Twenty-one of its sneaks have come when needing 2 yards to go, also the most of any NFL team.4Two-yarders make up 15 percent of the Pats’ sneaks, the 10th-highest proportion in the league. With only 1 yard to go, the Pats have converted the first down on 105 of 113 tries (93 percent). This success begets more success. The 133 Patriots QB sneaks that Pro Football Reference shows were worth a cumulative 138 expected points, the equivalent of about 20 touchdowns.5We used PFR’s play-finder tool to find extra QB sneaks from the Patriots, summing the expected points added on each. As an example, the aforementioned Huard sneak added 2.58 expected points. That’s a net benefit of about a point per QB sneak. Of course, most of the Patriots’ other offensive plays have also been net positives. But their 455 non-QB-sneak rush plays on the same downs and distances have been worth just 0.38 expected points per play. The Huard sneak is a prime example of the play’s effectiveness. According to PFR, it was New England’s fourth-most valuable offensive play that day, worth an estimated 2.6 points. A simple QB sneak that kept a drive going was worth a larger improvement in the Pats’ expected point total than Kevin Faulk’s 15-yard touchdown reception during the third quarter. The frequent success is due largely to two factors. The first: The simplest football play is a constant focus for the Patriots. Huard, who played for the Cincinnati Bengals, the Miami Dolphins, the Kansas City Chiefs, and the San Francisco 49ers during his 14-year career, said Belichick and the Patriots prioritized the QB sneak more than any other team. “Oh yeah,” he answered simply when asked, adding that while he can’t remember QB sneaks ever being the specific focus of a game plan, Brady, Belichick, the offensive coordinator and the offensive line talked about them on a weekly basis. They practice them, too, a fact that shocked coaches around the league. With 13:33 remaining in the second quarter of a game on Nov. 10, 2002, the New England Patriots faced a 4th-and-1 from their own 39-yard line. Head coach Bill Belichick chose the traditional option and sent out the punt team. But there was one notable exception: Backup quarterback Damon Huard was included among the 11 men on the field.Huard, in his second year with New England, rarely played, and a quarterback isn’t a typical member of the punt team.“I sort of snuck out onto the field, and I was lined up as the personal protector [on the play],” Huard, now an administrator and fundraiser for his alma mater, the University of Washington, said over the phone. “At the last second, I jumped up under center and did a quarterback sneak. We got 4 yards and a first down.”Six plays later, a 57-yard field goal by Adam Vinatieri tied the score 3-3, and the Patriots went on to win 33-30.Huard’s quarterback sneak was a single moment in a long game. It didn’t ensure victory for the Patriots, nor did the Chicago Bears’ obliviousness on that fourth down doom them to defeat. But it was emblematic of a hidden theme of the Patriots’ 16-year run of unprecedented success: No team sneaks more often nor more effectively than the Patriots.Since the start of the 2001 season, the Patriots lead the league in QB sneaks, running 0.52 every game, which translates to one roughly every other week.1We define a QB sneak as a middle run from a quarterback on third or fourth down and 1 or 2 yards to go. Shotgun plays are excluded. For comparison, Kansas City, which is last in the league, runs about two QB sneaks per season. Most teams attempt about three or four sneaks in a season, with Jacksonville (0.5 per game or roughly eight per season) and Baltimore (roughly seven per season) the only other teams that approach New England’s frequency. During that period, the Patriots, led by Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady, have won 14 of 16 AFC East titles and have been to the Super Bowl seven times, including Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons. The QB sneak is a remarkably efficient play, and an excellent way to extend a drive. Leaguewide, the conversion rate2Including both first downs and touchdowns. from 2001 to 2015 on 3rd-and-1 or 4th-and-1 plays that are not QB sneaks is 65 percent — on sneaks, that success rate jumps to 84 percent.3We checked to ensure these numbers weren’t affected by teams’ behavior late in games. In the first and second quarters, success rates are 66 percent (non-sneaks) and 86 percent (sneaks) And there’s a similar story when teams have 2 yards to gain, with sneaks 20 percentage points more successful (75 percent versus 55 percent) relative to other runs or passes. So the sneak is usually a good idea, relative to other play calls. But even compared to that higher baseline, some teams are much better at it than others. The second reason for success is that Brady excels in picking up the yard or two that’s needed for a first down. He’s not fast — notoriously running a pedestrian time at the 2000 NFL combine — but he’s large enough (6-foot-4, 225 pounds) to help push a pile, and he’s “not afraid to stick his face in there,” according to Huard. He’s also adept at reading defenses and determining their weaknesses. Huard saw this firsthand in practice and games: If Brady got to the line and thought he could get 3 or 4 inches, he would sneak. If not, if a massive noseguard and two linebackers were crowding the A-gap, making a sneak difficult, he’d run the play that was called.“It’s a feel thing, a look-and-see thing,” Huard said. “And no one does it better than Tom.”The QB sneak is an example of what the Patriots have done so well over the past 15 years. They find an advantage, and they exploit that advantage relentlessly. It’s so simple yet so effective. Belichick has been benefiting from using it for more than a decade and a half, putting his players into situations where they can succeed and positively affect the outcome.“I wasn’t exactly Randall Cunningham,” Huard said, laughing as he remembered the play from 2002. Brady isn’t, either, but it doesn’t matter. When it comes to the QB sneak, he’s more effective than Cunningham or any other quarterback. This success is a factor in the Patriots’ sustained success.VIDEO: The Patriots better worry about Julio Jones Related: Hot Takedown

He added that one growing problem for those attempting to unravel a divorcing couple’s finances was the level of financial support previously provided by parents-in-law to help them get a foothold on the housing ladder.“Debts of all kinds are a regular feature of divorce and not just more of a concern as couples tighten their belts during a recession,” he added.“That is certainly true for arguments related to sums provided by family members, despite the fact that rising property prices in recent years have meant more individuals feeling that they have to call on parents for help.”“In some of those cases, though, what were assumed to be cash gifts for things such as house deposits or even support in starting a business are suddenly classified as ‘loans’ when marriages hit the rocks.” Even though the failure of any marriage is unfortunate, it is perhaps especially so to see couples divorcing after only a couple of years spent as man and wife with bills for their wedding worth many thousands of pounds still not settledMichael Chapman, JMW Solicitors Credit:Getty Dr Rowan WilliamsCredit:Jonathan Brady /PA Credit:Andrew Crowley The pressure on couples to stage increasingly expensive “fairytale” weddings is now so great that some are now still trying to pay off the bills when they get divorced, family lawyers claim. One law firm has reported that more than a quarter of divorce settlements it handles is now held up by complications over who should be responsible for paying off debts accrued during the course of the marriage – or even from its beginning. In most cases the disputes between separating husbands and wives centre on the unpaid instalment plans for expensive items such as sports cars, caravans or holiday cottages. More recently the former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Williams of Oystermouth also spoke out about the threat to family life from what he called the “marketisation of marriage”.He warned of long-term consequences from the notion of “the perfect relationship crystalised in the perfect wedding day – the immense economic, advertising investment in this massively fantastical experience which you go through on your wedding day, after which, of course, nothing is ever quite so good again.” Mr Chapman, a specialist family lawyer at JMW, said: “The issue of debt is, sadly, a recurrent part of discussions when it comes to dividing assets and providing the means for both spouses to move on after a divorce.“Although the topic is particularly acute for younger couples who might not yet have had the opportunity to build up property, pensions or cash reserves, it is not exclusive to that age group.“There is still a considerable number of middle-age couples choosing to go their separate ways with the question of who should honour hire purchase or loan agreements still unresolved.“Disputes about household furniture and electrical items, cars, caravans and property are far from uncommon.“It is not solely about whether couples might be considered reliant on loans or not.“We have dealt with many instances in which even relatively wealthy couples regard determining ownership of debt almost as a matter of principle. It follows a warning from the then Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith in 2013 that overpriced “glitzy, celebrity” weddings are killing marriage by putting many off tying the knot altogether and saddling others with crippling debts which put a strain on the relationship. “Even though the failure of any marriage is unfortunate, it is perhaps especially so to see couples divorcing after only a couple of years spent as man and wife with bills for their wedding worth many thousands of pounds still not settled.” But others involve expensive “start-up” costs for the marriage itself such as furniture and other household necessities.Michael Chapman of JMW Solicitors, which handles around 300 divorces a year, said that a small but significant number of such disputes that his firm sees even centre on who should clear loans used to pay for the couple’s honeymoon or the wedding ceremony itself. He added that such disagreements were frustrating attempts by couples “of all ages and circumstances” to start over once their marriages had collapsed.
When G force is increased, blood in the head is pulled down to the lower… I was strapped inside the RAF’s new High-G centrifuge, officially unveiled today at RAF Cranwell in Lincolnshire by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Hillier. It is designed to allow fast jet pilots to experience increased G force and mitigate its worst effects. My head felt like a bowling ball balanced uneasily on my shoulders and it was hard to lift my arm into the air. I had to fight to regulate my breathing as I’d been taught in the pre-flight brief and the specially-designed clothing inflating around my legs and stomach was forcing me to tense every muscle to stop blood draining from my head.
Voith recently introduced Dtect, its intelligent monitoring system that provides real-time data of driveline performance and coupling status. Based on this, the operator can take actions to prevent potential problems and avoid unplanned downtime. By supporting better decision making, Dtect helps to increase productivity as well as significantly lower production and maintenance costs. Dtect enables comprehensive monitoring of a driveline’s torque limiting couplings. It was specifically designed to work with couplings, such as Voith’s SmartSet, which serve to prevent machine damage in high value rotating equipment. It is also possible to upgrade existing couplings with the intelligent system. These types of couplings are used in mining in applications as diverse as tunnel boring machines, mills, crushers, conveyors and excavatorsThrough continuous measurement of the slip angle, Dtect accurately identifies and monitors coupling slippage caused by high torque peaks in a driveline. This allows operators to take action if necessary, for example by adjusting the load of the driveline or by performing a controlled shutdown. The results include increased uptime, reduced maintenance and lower spare parts cost.Dtect continuously collects driveline performance data that can be analyzed to ensure maximum productivity. It uses an updated quadruple sensor setup that increases the sensing range without affecting the resolution of the measurement. By analyzing the slip behavior of the coupling, the operator can evaluate if the system is running at full capacity and if not, adjust the parameters accordingly. If necessary, proactive coupling maintenance can be performed to avoid costly downtime.Dtect now makes it possible to monitor multiple couplings at the same time. It assesses each coupling individually and communicates the different parameters via a common interface. In this way, Dtect allows for simultaneous monitoring of all connected drivelines. Operators benefit from comprehensive real-time status information provided by one central system.Equipped with Modbus TCP/IP communications, Dtect is easily integrated into established process information networks. Given its high flexibility, the system can be adopted with ease to other communication standards to meet a wide range of requirements.Dtect can be fitted with an integrated HMI touch panel. It offers highest usability, better control and status information at a glance. With visual warning indicators, the system assists operators in making decisions and taking the necessary actions in any given situation.
AT 7.03PM ON 21 December 1988, a bomb exploded on Pan Am Flight 103, killing all 243 passengers and 16 crew on board. The aircraft then crashed into the town of Lockerbie in Scotland. Eleven more people were killed on the ground.Twenty-five years on, events are being held in the UK and US today to remember and honour the 270 victims.A wreath-laying ceremony is to take place at Dryfesdale Cemetery with Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond in attendance. Westminster Abbey, Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia and Syracuse University also organised memorials.“Lockerbie remains one of the worst aviation disasters in history and the deadliest act of terrorism ever committed in the United Kingdom,” British Prime Minister David Cameron said as he marked the anniversary of the tragedy. The loss of the flight was a shocking event that was “made more poignant still by being so close to Christmas”, he added.“Over the last quarter of a century much attention has been focused on the perpetrators of the atrocity. Today our thoughts turn to its victims and to those whose lives have been touched and changed by what happened at Lockerbie that night.“To families, friends, neighbours, loved ones, and all those caught up in the painful process of recovery. Let us say to them: our admiration for you is unconditional. For the fortitude and resilience you have shown. For your determination never to give up. You have shown that terrorist acts cannot crush the human spirit. That is why terrorism will never prevail. And even in the darkest moments of grief, it is possible to glimpse the flickering flame of hope. The majority of the passengers on board were American citizens, including 35 students from Syracuse University.Cameron noted that there is still a strong bond between the Scottish town and the school.“Syracuse lost 35 of its own on that fateful evening. Nothing can restore the promise of those young lives cut short. Yet their memory is honoured by the scholarships Syracuse awards each year to 2 Lockerbie students and 35 of its own undergraduates,” he said.“They represent a growing band of beneficiaries, each given the chance to fulfil their own youthful promise. This is the lasting and optimistic legacy bequeathed to future generations on behalf of those who lost their lives on this day 25 years ago and who we remember here today.”

Tesco, which remains the largest player in terms of consumer spend, has shown a decline over the same 12 month period.Latest figures from consumer monitoring firm Kantar Worldpanel show that Aldi grew its share of the ‘multiples’ grocery market by 18.7 per cent in the 12-months leading up to the start of December this year. Lidl grew by 8.4 per cent — while Tesco, by contrast, saw its market share decrease by 6.4 per cent.Overall, however, Tesco still has the edge on its competitors in terms of size, at 26.1 per cent — followed by Dunnes (24.2 per cent) and Supervalu (19.5 per cent). Aldi’s share is 7.4 per cent, while Lidl are at 6.7 per cent; Superquinn have seen a slight drop in their share of the consumer take-home spend in the last 12 months, moving from 5.3 per cent to 5.1 per cent.According to David Berry, Kantar Worldpanel’s commercial director: “Value continues to be an attractive proposition for shoppers”.Despite the Central Statistics Office recently announcing that the economy grew by 1.5 per cent between July and September, the average household spend on grocery items has fallen by 0.2 per cent compared with last year. This is considerably below the 3.4 per cent price inflation as shoppers look to control their spend by reducing the amount of goods they buy.
The full list of specs for Motorola‘s upcoming Honeycomb Xoom tablets have now been released, and alongside them, a defiant defense of the Xoom’s $799 price courtesy of CEO Sanjay Jha. According to Jha, the Xoom will be a great value and worth every penny of its $799 3G price. Why? Jha wants to pretend 3G is the same as 4G.Jha says that Motorola felt that “our our ability to deliver 50Mb/s would justify the $799 price point. It is 32GB with 3G and a free upgrade to 4G.” What he’s referring to here is the 3G Xoom’s ability to suck down up to 50Mb/s in wireless broadband. The Xoom boasts a fast modem to be sure… but this is a semantic lie. The Xoom is not a 4G device, and it is not capable of the same speeds as an LTE tablet would be. Rather, it’s capable of HSPA+ speed, which are fast, sure, but not 4G fast… and certainly not so impressive that they warrant a $799 price.Weirdly, Jha then goes on to argue that the $799 price for the 3G version and the $600 price for the WiFi version are competitive with the iPad. “Being competitive with iPad is important,” he said. “We feel that from the hardware and capabilities we deliver we are at least competitive and in a number of ways better…. [For the WiFi-Only version], the price is set by iPad at $599 and we will be right around there.”Uh. The cheapest iPad is $499, not $599. The Xoom looks cool, Motorola, but you’re really stretching the truth pretty thin trying to justify its price, don’t you think?Read more at Wall Street Journal

PORTLAND — Seven years after the start of planning, the height of a proposed Columbia River Crossing is still up in the air as planners face a permit deadline for the new Interstate 5 toll bridge between Portland and Vancouver. Engineers are redesigning the bridge to increase the clearance for ship and barge traffic.Changing the height affects other aspects of construction such as highway grades, size of onramps, and even flight plans for Vancouver’s Pearson Field. In addition, construction costs increase with the height of the bridge.Planners must settle on a height before the Jan. 30 deadline to file the permit application with the Coast Guard, The Oregonian reported Tuesday. In March, after $140 million had been spent during seven years of planning, the Coast Guard said the proposed 95-foot clearance was too low and would block some ships or loads carried on barges. The Coast Guard must approve the height of bridges on navigable waterways. Planners have been analyzing possible bridge clearances, calculating effects and costs at each increment. They’re narrowing in on a decision of 115 or 116 feet, the newspaper said.

Flexible working is slowly becoming an expectation for many employees, particularly those negotiating their job offer, while having additional paid time off is even more highly valued.“It’s tempting in our ‘always-on’ economy to let the lines between home life and work become blurred, but it’s worth remembering that to maintain a productive and loyal workforce, employers need to give their staff the opportunity to switch off and recharge.
