Back To School 2017Expert’s 7 Must Know SAT/ACT Test Taking Tips, as Teens and Parents Prepare for the Essential College Admission Tests This School YearFew high school students look forward to the SAT and ACT test. It’s not exactly sunshine for parents either who feel the strain and pressure to help their child earn the best score possible to help pave the way to their college education.Andrea Catsicas, Founder of Mindworks Prep www.mindworksprep.com , has expert insight to help parents and students prepare for College Admission Testing. The tips include:Distraction Action – It’s harder and harder for children to study for college prep tests in the digital age, with all of the added distractions. There’s nothing wrong with taking their phone away and having them study out of an SAT book for an hour, in a place where you can visually monitor that your child is not allowing distractions to take over.Read to Succeed – The redesigned SAT is more focused on reading comprehension than ever before. Now, more than ever, pleasure reading is a way to study for the SAT.Review and Improve – You can order a copy of the actual test your child took (depends on the time of year); for other tests, you will receive stats on how your child did, but not copies of the specific questions that were missed.ACT or SAT – Find out which test is preferred by your child’s dream school ACT or SAT. If you’re prepping for one test and the school prefers the other, you might be wasting time, energy and money. How’s it Coming? – Sign your child up for Khan Academy and monitor how quickly your child progresses through its lessons. Khan Academy has exclusive rights to information about testing content, and its questions mirror College Board questions more than any prep book (besides the actual College Board SAT book).MISCONCEPTION: The ACT and the new SAT are similar: they’re more similar, but their essays are totally different, and their math content covers entirely different classes (the ACT delves into pre-calculus a great deal more).MISCONCEPTION: It isn’t easy to study for the SAT’s during the school year: juggling school and test prep work is extremely challenging. Starting your student with a test prep program as early in their education process as possible is one of the best ways around this challenge.” UF/IFAS in Apopka will temporarily house District staff; saves almost $400,000 Please enter your name here Gov. Opinion: Faith and InspirationBy The Apopka Voice Editorial StaffThe streets of Heaven are too crowded tonight…too crowded with our friends, our families and our neighbors. It was the most violent week in Central Florida history. Christina Grimme was shot and killed after concluding a concert Friday night at The Plaza Live. Early Sunday morning a gunman shot and killed 49 people, and wounded 53 others at the Pulse Nightclub. Then on Wednesday a 2-year-old boy drowned when an alligator pulled him into a man-made lake at Disney World. It was a shocking, horrific week of events that has left us heartbroken, numb and weary of the next story in the news. And Apopka was by no means immune from the tragedies. Miguel Angel Honorato, Sr. and Eddie Justice were both killed at The Pulse Nightclub shooting. Both men are from Apopka. The community was staggered, but then it went into action.By early Sunday afternoon, there were lines around the Blood One Blood Bank on Park Avenue. It became so crowded that they asked the donors to return on future days with an appointment. The details of that event can be read here.Later that evening, the community continued its support for the victims with a prayer vigil held at Kit Land Nelson Park. Despite it being a quickly organized event, an estimated crowd of 75 attended. The details of that event can be read here.During the week, offers from local businesses and churches poured in for free limousines, funeral services, counseling and flowers. The City of Apopka offered two free burial plots. At the Wednesday City Council meeting, Mayor Joe Kilsheimer expressed his thoughts on the events of the weekend.“We have two funerals of Apopka victims coming up this weekend. They are brothers and sisters and they had brothers and sisters. One was the father of three children. Our community is devastated. Earlier in the day, Mayor Teresa Jacobs (of Orange County) called and asked if I could attend a press conference that brought together elected leaders and faith leaders throughout Orange County. We came together in a spirit of love. The Central Florida community is in need of healing right now. And that is the message that I want to convey. I’m going to wear the rainbow ribbon in honor of the victims.”On Thursday night there were two prayer vigils; one at Phillis Wheatley Elementary School and another at Journey Christian Church.About 300 people attended the service at Wheatley Elementary. They came to pray, light candles and mourn for the life of Eddie Justice, one of the 49 people killed last Sunday in the shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando. Eddie’s mother, Wilamena attended. Several community leaders spoke and prayed, including Pastor Hezekiah Bradford, Pastor Richard King, County Commissioner Bryan Nelson and Apopka Police Captain Jerome Miller.Over 400 people attended the service at Journey Christian Church. A member of the Orlando Police SWAT team was present, along with an ORMC Emergency Room nurse. The service began with a moving video from gunshot victim Christine Grimme. The video can be seen here.“We mourn these victims tonight,” said John Hampton, Lead Pastor of Journey. “Everybody is somebody’s everybody.”Other pastors at Journey prayed for the first responders, the medical community, the leaders of Central Florida, and the LGBTQ community. On Friday night the final vigil was held at Kit Land Nelson Park. Elected officials, pastors and the community grieved for the victims and their families for the fourth time in a public setting. The streets of Heaven are far too crowded with angels after the events of this week. Central Florida will never forget these tragic events. But in another corner of Heaven, perhaps in a small office somewhere off the beaten trail, there is a scribe who writes the history of Apopka. He wept as he wrote the names of Miguel Angel Honorato Sr. and Eddie Justice early on Sunday. They departed their families much sooner than they should have. But as this scribe dips his quill into his inkwell and writes the history of Apopka’s last seven days, he is smiling. Even in tragedy this town leads with its heart, pours out compassion and charity, and keeps moving forward.God bless you Apopka.Photos from the first vigil at Kit Land Nelson Park LEAVE A REPLY Cancel reply Support conservation and fish with NEW Florida specialty license plate TAGSapopkaPrayer VigilsPulse Shooting Previous articleFake News Site Targets ApopkaNext article4Rivers Opens Today to Raise Funds for Pulse Victims Dale Fenwick RELATED ARTICLESMORE FROM AUTHOR Please enter your comment!
When Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron announced Sept. 23 that a grand jury was not charging a single police officer in the cop murder of Breonna Taylor on March 13 in Louisville, Ky., mass demonstrations erupted there, in New York City and in many other cities. On Sept. 25, Taylor’s family demanded the grand jury “open the books” and reveal the evidence used to reach its decision. New evidence has now been released. Recordings from the grand jury proceedings and body cam footage from some police officers at the scene have raised many doubts about the legitimacy of the investigation and the handling of the crime scene by the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD).A protest against the police killing of Breonna Taylor, held Sept. 24 in Louisville, Ky.AG Cameron’s case for the LMPD officers hinges on their claim they announced themselves before breaking into the apartment where Taylor lay sleeping beside her partner, Kenneth Walker. The AG’s key witness testified to confirm this. But Vice News obtained audio recordings of the original interview with this witness, who can be heard plainly saying, “No, nobody identified themselves.” Only after this initial interview did the witness change their story. AG Cameron presented no information from the first interview, but only testimony from the later interview that confirmed the cop narrative. (tinyurl.com/y24l86dz)This is a huge indication of bias in the case presented to the grand jury, since this was the only witness claiming to hear the police identify themselves. None of the dozens of other neighbors interviewed by Vice said they heard the police announce themselves.Inconsistencies, lies in official narrativeAnother inconsistency in the official narrative stems from the claim by the city and the LMPD that none of the officers who broke in were wearing body cameras. According to police, the officers were wearing plain clothes and were not required to wear body cameras. But recently released photos from the scene show Officer Tony James wearing a body cam, which he did not turn on, in a violation of department rules. The cam footage would have provided crucial evidence of the shooting. Without that, the case comes down to the word of the cops against that of Kenneth Walker, who fired a gun at unknown men breaking in like thieves. (tinyurl.com/yxt5nwj4)Many hours of video footage are now available which show officers after the shooting, the scene during investigation and the arrest of Walker. One body cam recording shows one officer who fired a weapon, Brett Hankinson, walking back into the crime scene and being asked to leave by investigators. Hankinson lingers and asks questions. Another involved officer, Mike Campbell, is seen walking around, interviewing neighbors. (tinyurl.com/y5b7u865)This later body cam footage clearly shows both these cops in violation of standard departmental practice after a cop shooting. Involved officers are supposed to be separated and assigned a “peer support officer,” in order to ensure they don’t speak to others on the scene or tamper with the investigation.More than fifteen hours of tapes of released grand jury proceedings show other police distortions and inconsistencies. For instance, Officer Hankinson claimed that from outside he saw someone with a long gun inside the apartment. But no long gun was recovered, and the window he said he looked through was covered by blinds. (tinyurl.com/y55segjh)This new evidence strongly confirms public suspicion and anger about Taylor’s death and the state’s protection of police misconduct. In July, Taylor’s family accused the LMPD of a cover-up, after it came to light that investigators interviewing Officer Mattingly asked leading questions to coach him into a story that would clear him of wrongdoing. This behavior indicates that from the get-go, the investigators had every intention of sweeping the murder of Taylor out of sight. (tinyurl.com/y4jc6cjw)The state’s investigation has utterly failed to pursue justice for the killing of Breonna Taylor. Unrelenting protesters continue to push for the only real justice that can be had — the defunding and abolition of the police.FacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmailPrintMoreShare thisFacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmailPrintMoreShare this

A Bench of Justices L. Nageswara Rao, Hemant Gupta and S. Ravindra Bhat heard submissions of Senior Advocate Arvind Datar, representing Madras Bar Association, on the unconstitutionality of the Tribunal Rules, 2020. Datar submitted to the Court today that the 2010 judgment of Union of India v. Madras Bar Association had struck down the Selection Committee. Further, the 2017 Finance Bill did not contain any provisions with regard to tribunals. However, when the Bill was passed, there was a complete chapter on the same. “This was an unfortunate development as the entire functioning of tribunals was taken away from the Acts and was given to the Executive. Now, this was taken up in Rojer Mathew. There, it had been concluded that the 2017 Rules are unconstitutional and the new Rules must be constituted in conformity with the observations of the Supreme Court and placed before them”, submitted Datar. He went on to aver that all the defects that had been held to be unconstitutional in the 2017 Rules, had been reiterated in the 2020 Rules. It was further submitted that members of the Indian Legal Service, in tribunal after tribunal, picked up new judicial members as per the new Rules, which effectively meant that a person who had nothing to do with banking could become the Chairman of the Debt Recovery Appellate Tribunal. ‘Tribunal Rules 2020 Against Principles Of Separation Of Powers & Judicial Independence’: Madras Bar Association Moves SCDatar, then contending that the question was not only about the independence of the judiciary, but also the independence of quasi-judicial authorities, enumerated the qualifications of judicial/technical members of the CAT. “These columns fall foul of the 2010 Madras Bar Association judgment as well as Rojer Mathew as there is no judicial dominance. Therefore, Para 4 of the Rules must be struck down. And if this Para 4 is struck down, the entire Rules will need to be declared as unconstitutional”. Datar then referred to the 2015 Madras Bar Association judgment which had paved the way for establishment of the National Company Law Tribunal. It had additionally stated that the guidelines laid down in the 2010 judgement had to be scrupulously followed. “Even in the case of the DRT, the person can automatically be appointed as the Presiding Officer. Earlier, a person qualified to be a district judge could be a part of it. Now, they are saying that the person has to be a district judge”. Datar also submitted that there was no rationale for excluding advocates as the quasi-judicial authorities had to decide the interpretation of the Acts. “If some Tribunals do not allow a lawyer of long standing to be appointed(as judicial officers) and others do, then it should be struck down as manifestly arbitrary. This is a dangerous trend. What is this new allergy to advocates?” Datar then read out the recommendations of Justices Goel and Lalit regarding the functioning of tribunals and how they did not form a part of the administration. In light of his arguments, he stated that the Rules had to be struck down. Alternatively, they could not have a retrospective effect and should be prospective. The matter will now be taken up tomorrow, i.e. 16 September. The Madras Bar Association has filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court challenging the constitutionality of the Tribunal, Appellate Tribunal and other Authorities (Qualifications, Experience and other Conditions of Service of Members) Rules, 2020. It has been contended that the Rules are in “contravention of the principles of separation of powers, independence of the judiciary (both being part of the basic structure of our Constitution), and are against efficient and effective administration of justice”. The 2020 Rules had been notified by the Central Government in February 2020, exercising powers under Section 184 of the Finance Act, 2017, after the Supreme Court set aside similar Rules made in 2017 in the case of RojerMathew v. South Indian Bank Ltd. The plea states that the issues afflicting the 2017 Rules have been reiterated in the 2020 Rules and therefore, it is liable to be struck down. Next Story

It may be noted that the Punjab & Haryana High Court on Friday (12th February) took suo-motu cognizance of the alleged illegal confinement of 23-year-old labour activist Nodeep Kaur (a member of the Mazdoor Adhikar Sangathan) by Haryana police. The Bench of Justice Arun Kumar Tyagi, in its order, noted that complaints dated 06th February 2021 and 08th February 2021 have been received through e-mail regarding illegal confinement of Nodeep Kaur, Dalit Labour Activist by the Haryana Police. Other averments in the Bail Plea She has been targeted so that unionization of the workers does not take place as her organization was successful in generating huge support in favour of the Farmers’ protests and this irked the Administration. Even after the directions of Judicial Magistrate First Class, she was not produced for the medical examination for a number of days. Offence under Section 384 not made out even as per the facts alleged by the Police officials. During the custody in the police station, she was tortured and made to sign on blank papers. About Nodeep Kaur As stated, Nodeep Kaur is a member of the Mazdoor Adhikar Sangathan and was arrested on 12th January when she participated in a protest held by unpaid labourers near the Singhu border between Haryana and Delhi and she remains in custody to date (in Haryana’s Karnal jail). Arrested by the Sonipat Police on January 12 on charges of attempt to murder, rioting, and assault to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty under the Indian Penal Code, among others, her Bail plea of was dismissed by a local court on 02nd February. As reported by The Hindu, the Sonipat Police issued a statement that a police team had gone to Kundli Industrial Area the day after they received information about the alleged manhandling of management and staff of an industrial unit, and attempts to extort money from them. According to police, Ms. Nodeep and her associates attacked the police with sticks, causing injuries to seven personnel. Following the incident, she was arrested, but her associates managed to escape. Responding to allegations of torture, the police has said, “She did not raise the issue of assault by police officers either before the Medical Officer or the Chief Judicial Magistrate.” “Thus, the allegations put forward by the accused or her lawyer seems to be an afterthought and the Police Department clearly negates the said allegation,” said the statement. As reported by Scroll, Kaur was granted bail (on 11th February) in connection with an extortion case, however, Kaur, will remain in prison for two more cases against her in connection with 12th January incident. Significantly, the arrest and the alleged torture of Kaur sparked social media debate and gained attention after Meena Harris, the niece of United States Vice President Kamala Harris, tweeted about her.Next Story

Alex Stone/ABC News(LOS ANGELES) — In an effort to protect the delicate flowers, officials at the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve have be working hard to keep selfie-seeking guests on the paths and out of the fields. Little did they know they had to watch out for helicopters, too.On Monday afternoon, a couple flew over the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve and landed their helicopter in the poppies, according to California State Parks PIO Jorge Moreno. The incident was captured by a poppy field guest.“We never thought it would be explicitly necessary to state that it is illegal to land a helicopter in the middle of the fields and begin hiking off trail in the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve, but recent events have shown that we were wrong,” the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve said in a now-deleted Facebook post. When law enforcement officials tried to approach the couple, the pair ran back to their helicopter and flew off. This season’s super blooms across California have drawn massive crowds determined to get a glimpse of the beauty. The influx of visitors has not been without challenge to the communities and their poppies.Over the last two weeks, for example, the city of Lake Elsinore has struggled to keep its poppy fields open. On March 17, it said on its Facebook page that the fields had been closed due to a lack of resources. A few days later, however, they reopened with new plans in place to control vehicle and foot traffic. The California State Park staff have been preparing for this year’s bloom for months, and created the #DontDoomTheBloom and #BeautyITheBloom to create social awareness and responsibility, according to Moreno. They’ve noticed visitors both at the park and on social media educating each other on how to properly enjoy the blooms.“This year’s bloom is spectacular and we understand that visitors want to take that great photo but going off trails or laying on the flowers causes irreversible damages to the natural habitat,” Moreno told ABC News. Those who stray from the path could be fined, Moreno said, noting that fees will vary.“We understand this may not seem like the crime of the century, but it only takes the actions of a few to wreck the scenery for years to come,” Antelope Valley Reserve said on Facebook. As for the two who landed their helicopter, Moreno said that California State Parks is continuing to investigate the incident.Copyright © 2019, ABC Radio. iStock(LOS ANGELES) — A grand jury in Boston on Tuesday returned additional charges against 18 people tied to the “Varsity Blues” college admissions scandal. The new charges affect 11 of 15 previously charged parents, including actress Lori Loughlin, and seven university officials. Mossimo Giannuli, Loughlin’s husband, is also included in those facing additional charges. The jury in the District of Massachusetts is alleging that 11 defendants — Gamal Abdelaziz, Diane Blake, Todd Blake, Mossimo Giannulli, Elisabeth Kimmell, Lori Loughlin, William McGlashan Jr., Marci Palatella, John Wilson, Homayoun Zadeh and Robert Zangrillo — “conspired to commit federal program bribery by bribing employees of the University of Southern California (USC) to facilitate their children’s admission,” according to the Department of Justice statement. The charges, announced in separate statements by the U.S. Department of Justice, may not have come as much of a surprise after prosecutors had warned parents who didn’t plead guilty that they could face additional charges, attorneys involved in the case told ABC News.Wilson, of Lynnfield, Massachusetts, additionally has been charged with two counts of substantive federal programs bribery in connection with efforts to use bribes to get his children into Harvard University and Stanford University. The indictments also include more charges against McGlashan Jr., Wilson, Zangrillo and Joey Chen, who stand accused of fraud and honest services wire fraud in connection with previous charges. The new charges apply only to parents like Loughlin who have opted not to plead guilty to the initial indictment. Parents who’ve already pleaded guilty or agreed to pleas were spared additional charges. There are no immediate court appearances associated with the new charges. The main effect is to expose the accused parents to additional prison time at sentencing should they be convicted.“Today’s charges are the result of ongoing investigation in the nationwide college admissions case,” Andrew E. Lelling, U.S. attorney for the District of Massachusetts, said in a statement. “Our goal from the beginning has been to hold the defendants fully accountable for corrupting the college admissions process through cheating, bribery and fraud. The superseding indictments will further that effort.”The seven university officials facing additional charges are: Gordon Ernst, Donna Heinel, Jorge Salcedo, Mikaela Sanford, Jovan Vavic, Niki Williams and William Ferguson. They’re accused of “conspiring to commit mail and wire fraud, and honest services mail and wire fraud, in connection with the previously charged scheme to accept bribes and engage in other forms of fraud to facilitate cheating on standardized admissions tests and to secure the admission of students to elite universities by designating them as purported athletic recruits or members of other favored admissions categories,” according to the statement.Ernst, Heinel, Salcedo, Sanford, Vavic and Williams also “face substantive wire and honest services wire fraud charges in connection with the scheme,” the DOJ said. Additionally, Ernst, Heinel, and Salcedo are facing new charges of “conspiring to commit federal programs bribery by soliciting and accepting bribes to facilitate the admission of students to the universities where they worked: Georgetown University, the University of Southern California, and The University of California — Los Angeles.”Ernst also has been charged with “substantive counts of federal programs bribery and money laundering,” the statement said. There are no immediate court appearances associated with the new charges, but the main effect is to expose the parents to additional prison time at sentencing should they be convicted. Those now facing additional charges were arrested earlier this year, or in 2018, for their roles in the $25 million college admissions scandal allegedly masterminded by William “Rick” Singer.Copyright © 2019, ABC Radio. Weatherford is an industry leader in traditional safety valve technology and now extending its legacy reliability to the deep and ultradeepwater market Image: The Optimax deep-set safety valve is controlled by a primary hydraulic control line. Photo: Courtesy of fancycrave1 from Pixabay. Weatherford International has announced its largest-ever contract for deep-set safety valves. Under terms of a deal with Brazilian-based multinational corporation Petróleo Brasileiro S.A., more commonly known as Petrobras, Weatherford will deliver 24 Optimax deep-set safety valves in the next four years.Weatherford, an industry leader in traditional safety valve technology, is now extending its legacy reliability to the deep and ultradeepwater market. The Optimax deep-set safety valve protects against catastrophic loss of well control by providing fail-safe closures at pressure up to 10,000 psi (68 MPa) and are rated for setting depths as deep as 12,000 ft (3,658 m). The valves are monogrammed to API-14A’s highest validation grade of V1.“The Weatherford Optimax deep-set safety valve is a victory in innovative thinking,” said Mark Hopmann, President of Completions for Weatherford. Hopmann added, “Conventional deep-set valves typically require nitrogen-charged chambers to compensate for the high hydrostatic pressure of the control line. The Optimax deep-set safety valve overcomes this challenge with a design that utilizes highly reliable, field-proven technology.”An integral part of the completion string, the Optimax deep-set safety valve is controlled by a primary hydraulic control line. Application of control-line pressure keeps the valve in the open position. When pressure is bled off, the valve closes to protect property, personnel, and the environment. A secondary upward-facing piston, plus heavy-duty power springs, enable fail-safe closure while keeping the hold-open pressure to a minimum. Source: Company Press Release
Ocean City Tabernacle Pastor and CEO Jay Reimer, right, is shown with Philadelphia Eagles Chaplain Ted Winsley during a service in 2019. By MADDY VITALEPhiladelphia Eagles team chaplain Ted Winsley is proud of the players. But it isn’t just because of their success on the field, not to mention the coveted 2018 Super Bowl win.It is how his players are spiritually, and the fact that many of them — about 40 percent — attend his Bible studies. The team members, he told an audience at the Ocean City Tabernacle in two programs Sunday, share a philosophy he has instilled in them over 18 years as the team’s chaplain.Out of 53 players, 22 take part in Winsley’s Bible studies.“There really is a Christian culture here,” he said of the Eagles. He has played a key role in the spiritual development and team dynamic the Philly team is known for.Winsley spoke to the Tabernacle audience about the message he imparts on the players. He gave an uplifting sermon where he had audience members recite scripture and his words to live by that flashed on the Tabernacle screens.Eagles Chaplain Ted Winsley tells the audience members that God is with them every step of the way.During an interview before his sermon, Winsley spoke about the advice he gives to his players. Some of them have become Born Again Christians during their time with the Eagles.“The idea is to create balance in an imbalanced world,” said Winsley, a married father of two. “Something I say to all of the players is football is not a purpose. It is a platform.”That platform, he said, could be used to help others. Many of the players are involved in charities and use their position to help others, he noted.“Pastor Ted,” as he is affectionately called, is a native of Dover, Del., and currently resides in South Jersey, where he is a pastor at a church in Voorhees called “The Family Church,” according to a Tabernacle press release. He showed his Super Bowl ring to the audience and with a smile gave a Sunday game prediction for the Eagles: “Win.”Winsley told the audience that, while they are not professional football players, they all have major responsibilities and hurdles. It could be a problem at work, or a health issue, but God gives a blueprint and a person’s faith will see them through, he said. The battles, he said, can be won with faith and knowing you can do it and to be strong.Winsley weaved in the 2018 Super Bowl win. It was all of the work and faith that led up to the big victory, he said.Success, he said, does not happen on the field. It happens beforehand. He credited the spiritual beliefs of many of the players who attended Bible studies.Pastor Ted Winsley speaks to an audience member after the program. Many hurdles could have set the team back. There were injuries to key players along the way, especially to star quarterback, Carson Wentz, who helped bring the team to the Super Bowl, but could not play in it.There was the thought, there was “no way you’re going to win without the starting quarterback,” Winsley noted. But, as in any other team effort, one person does not do it alone, he stressed. And then there was something — rather, someone else — who helped in a time of need.“God always has a Nick Foles waiting in the bushes,” Winsley said.Tabernacle CEO and President Pastor Jay Reimer said he was pleased to have Winsley join them to speak before the audience.“My hope today is that Eagles fans here today will hear about how the pastor works with the Eagles players,” Reimer said. “In my childhood, I read a book about different NFL players and their stories how they related to God. That is one of the reasons I became a Christian.”For more information about upcoming events, visit www.octabernacle.org.The Ocean City Tabernacle is located at 550 Wesley Ave.

The prospect of hearing 10 top Harvard instructors lecture for 10 minutes each on the subjects that they care most deeply about drew an overflow crowd to Sanders Theatre on Thursday (Feb. 11).Harvard Thinks Big, a student-organized discussion that paired leading lecturers with eager listeners, attracted these great minds to help explore and inspire new ways of thinking, in the first session of what organizers hope will become an annual experience.“It’s an effort to epitomize what’s best about Harvard and [remind people] why we came here in the first place: to hear incredible professors talking about the things that they know best, and to be inspired,” said senior Derek Flanzraich, who conceived of the event along with Peter Davis ’12.The format was based on the popular Technology, Entertainment, Design (TED) talks, lectures given at the annual TED conference that follow the same tight format, and which have become online sensations. Before the series of 10-minute talks began, a line of students extended out to the Science Center, patiently hoping to get into the theater, undaunted by a long wait on a cold night.Gaining a lucky seat close to the front, sophomore Avinash Joshi was eager to listen to his Currier House master, Richard Wrangham, the Ruth Moore Professor of Biological Anthropology in Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences, as well as the other speakers.“I think the coolest idea is that they have to explain what they are most passionate about in 10 minutes … what they really care about, deep in their hearts. It’s going to come out tonight, and that’s why I am here.”Hundreds of students put their studies aside for the two-hour-plus discussion that touched on a range of topics, including violence, evolution, fairy tales, fire, religion, and hip-hop.Presentation styles ranged from subdued podium deliveries to ones infused with drama, such as the one by Andrew Berry, lecturer on organismic and evolutionary biology, who moved around the stage in a brief “drunken” stumble to help illustrate the confused arc of an important genetic mutation in human evolution.Lecturer on computer science David Malan ripped a phone book in two at one point, and worked up a sweat as he paced in front of the crowd, discussing the magic of making “machines do your bidding.” He encouraged students to explore fields that they might never have considered, the way he did as a Harvard undergraduate when he took a computer course outside his original government track.Diana Eck’s big idea was pluralism. Eck, professor of comparative religion and Indian studies and director of Harvard’s Pluralism Project, said she was there to recruit students to study religion, particularly pluralism, the broader engagement and understanding of other people’s faiths.“The ‘we’ in ‘we the people’ has become far more complex than ever before,” she said. “It will require stretching exercises. It will require all of us to know a lot more about each other.”For Daniel Gilbert, global warming isn’t happening fast enough to prompt a strong human response. The professor of psychology told the crowd that the reason the world is so slow to act on climate change is because the danger it poses isn’t intentional, immoral, imminent, or instantaneous. He outlined his theory on how the human brain responds to threats. If, in keeping with his “immoral” theory, “eating puppies” caused global warming, Gilbert said, people would be massing in the streets.Timothy McCarthy, lecturer on history and literature, adjunct lecturer on public policy, and director of the Human Rights and Social Movements Program at the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School, delivered an impassioned talk about the future of protest. He challenged students to embrace the protest spirit of people like Harvard graduate and Civil War Col. Robert Gould Shaw, the commander of the all-black 54th Regiment, who died and was buried with his men.McCarthy pointed to Gould’s statue in the hall and encouraged the students to “transform their privilege into passion.”“Brothers and sisters, if we are to have a future filled with freedom and hope and equality, rather than hatred and fear and exclusion, we must act now. Let us rededicate ourselves to [Abraham Lincoln’s] ‘better angels of our nature’ and bring about a new birth of protest.”The speakers were chosen largely by student request as part of a survey distributed to all undergraduates by the College Events Board in the fall. Harvard Undergraduate Television recorded the event and will post it on the studio’s Web site. Harvard’s Undergraduate Council also helped to plan the program.Davis and the president of the Undergraduate Council, Johnny Bowman ’11, hosted the evening, and Dean of Harvard College Evelynn M. Hammonds, the Barbara Gutmann Rosenkrantz Professor of the History of Science and of African and African American Studies, encouraged the students in the audience to explore their own big ideas.“All of us here want you to find your own passion.”One noticeable absence from the lineup was Michael Sandel, a popular speaker and the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Professor of Government. He was unable to attend because of a prior engagement. He is a speaker at this year’s TED conference in Long Beach, Calif.
According to the World Economic Forum’s first Human Capital Report, the U.S. ranked 43rd among 112 countries in the Health and Wellness category, which measured a country’s ability to develop and deploy a healthy workforce. It received particularly low scores in obesity, the impact on business of noncommunicable diseases, and stress. The report was co-authored by David Bloom, Clarence James Gamble Professor of Economics and Demography at Harvard School of Public Health. The report evaluated countries based on three other categories: Education,Workforce and Employment, and Enabling Environment (infrastructure, legal framework, and social mobility). Overall, the United States placed 16th, with Switzerland receiving the highest overall marks. The report was issued October 1, 2013.The report drew from publicly available data produced by international organizations such as the World Health Organization, the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization, and the International Labour Organization, in addition to survey data from the World Economic Forum and Gallup. If you’re looking for robust economic growth during this prolonged, fitful recovery from the recent global economic crisis, look toward Africa. Ethiopia’s gross domestic product grew almost 10 percent in 2014, Tanzania’s 7 percent, the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s 9 percent, Rwanda’s 7 percent. Those numbers, of course, mask other problems, such as gaping inequality and millions living in poverty. Still, Donald Kaberuka, the former president of the African Development Bank, said that from an economic standpoint, the numbers are no fluke.Kaberuka acknowledges that helping millions of people out of poverty is an enormous job, but he also points to increased government stability, regulation that sets a level economic playing field, ample natural resources, and a young, growing population hungry for both jobs and consumer goods, all good signs for the future.Kaberuka, who is now the Hauser Leader-in-Residence at Harvard Kennedy School’s Center for Public Leadership, sat down with the Gazette recently to talk about his 10 years at the helm of the bank, which is charged with fostering development on the continent. He also discussed Africa’s economic future, and his own plans for his fellowship year.GAZETTE: Let’s start with some background on the African Development Bank. What is its mission?KABERUKA: The African Development Bank is the continent’s premier development institution. We commit, every year, close to $8 billion in funding, a combination of loans, grants, and guarantees, to fund various sectors of development. In the last years, our key investment has been infrastructure — 60 percent of the portfolio in energy, highways, the kind of things that Africa needs. Beyond funding, we are also an important player in the policy dialogue with countries. We are firm believers in the concept that development is not simply about money. If development was about money only, Libya would be the most developed country in the world. So it’s about money, it’s about policies, and it’s about delivery capacity.GAZETTE: What would you say were the main achievements of the bank during your tenure there?KABERUKA: I took office in 2005, at a time when Africa was changing dramatically, reversing years of decline for the first time with real per-capita growth, which was over 7 percent in many countries. We decided to focus on how to best to stimulate this new momentum in Africa. And we made the following choices: Number one, a big push on infrastructure. In the last 10 years we have put into infrastructure about $28 billion and, assuming a leverage [expansion across the economy] of one to five, you can imagine this is quite an important contribution. The second thing we did was to lead from the front on the private sector. The cliché overseas for a long time was that Africa was a risky place to do business, and we set out to show that the return on investment in Africa was actually higher than that on other continents. We have to put our money where the mouth is, and so we increased significantly the bank’s support for business, from $300 million a year to $2.8 billion at the time I left office, per annum. The third thing we did was to focus on deepening Africa’s internal single market. We’re a continent of 1 billion people, but we needed to deepen that market by cross-border infrastructure, removing nontariff restrictions, increasing regional public goods, all things that deepen a market of 54 countries into one single market. And finally … improving the quality of institutions, institutions that support the economy: financial management, tax collection, oversight institutions, functioning commercial codes — which are sometimes as important as money. We give a particular focus to natural resource-rich countries — exporters of oil and gas and minerals — because these have enough money of their own, if well managed, to avoid the Dutch disease, or the resource curse, as they call it. And also [we give] special attention to countries coming out of years of conflict and war, like Liberia, Sierra Leone, and many others. So these basically were our areas of focus. I’m glad to tell you that under my presidency, the general capital of the bank went from $32 billion to $100 billion. We tripled the capital of the bank in 10 years. We managed to raise soft grants for poorer countries almost 2½ times, to $5 billion. We managed to put out there a powerful counter-cyclical response to the global financial crisis, which minimized dramatically the damage to African economies.GAZETTE: What was that response? Was it increased lending?KABERUKA: The global financial crisis for many low-income countries took the following form. Our banking sector was quite solid, well-regulated. There was no issue of capital adequacy, there was no issue about liquidity, there was no issue about toxic products. But there was retrenchment by the European banks from funding, for example, African trade and business. So we had to step in where the European banks were retrenching. We had to pick up some of the important projects that risked being abandoned, because abandoning projects and picking them up later can actually be more expensive. And in a few countries we provided a bit of liquidity, just as a precaution.Botswana [is] a very well-managed country, one of the best in the world. But the diamond market was tanking, because in a crisis like this there is a flight to safety in gold and away from prestige things like diamonds. So we had to step in with about $1.6 billion to help Botswana cope with that particular problem … It took different forms depending on the different countries.GAZETTE: How does the bank do its business? Is it different from a commercial bank?KABERUKA: The African Development Bank, like the World Bank, is actually three institutions in one. You have the bank, which is a triple-A-rated institution. It is able to raise money from the capital markets very competitively and pass it on to customers for 20 years, again at very competitive pricing. Then you also provide soft loans … to countries that are not a great risk. And then there are countries — say like Liberia, Sierra Leone, Central African Republic — where it has to be grants. The money we raise from donors is simply for those poorer countries. But for other countries, middle-income countries, financial markets, we give them loans. And as a triple-A-rated institution, we are able to do so competitively.GAZETTE: Is there ever a conflict between running a financially sound institution and the need to invest in development projects?KABERUKA: We do not want to lose money, so we do this analysis carefully. The dividend we would like to give our shareholders [comes from] the bank side of the institution making a good profit, that we then use to fund low-income countries. So it is important that the bank side is as solid as it could be. We are not Bank of America, not Barclay’s. We fund projects on the basis of a number of metrics, including development effectiveness. We look at avoiding crowding out. If other institutions can do it, we don’t do it. We are prepared to take some risks which commercial institutions won’t, but at the end we want to keep the AAA as a solid bank, so it can make money to fund poorer countries.GAZETTE: Where are the African economies today? Do they still have the promise they had a few years ago, and, if so, in what areas do you see that promise being?KABERUKA: Africa is part of the world, so we cannot avoid the global slowdown in the emerging markets or the prolonged after-effects of the global financial crisis. But I’m telling you African economies have fared much better than expected and much better than in other parts of the word. A large number of economies are still growing very strongly. And, contrary to what people might think, this is not about commodities. It is not about oil and gas, and minerals. It is mainly about investment. It’s about the internal market and consumption, about growth in regional trade, but also the improvement in policy and fundamentals. Now the recent decline in commodities is an issue for some countries that depend on one or two commodities. But there is room for fiscal adjustment to take care of [them]. So I remain very confident that, provided African countries keep the good policies of the last decade, we can overcome this particular [problem]. That said, there are two challenges we must overcome. The first challenge is one of job creation for Africa’s growing youth. We are a young continent, so job creation that comes from transforming our economies and moving up the global value chain is critical for every single country. Number two, the issues of inclusion and inequality … It’s about sharing the prosperity so they don’t have very wealthy people amidst a sea of poverty and misery, for that is neither politically sustainable nor economically sensible.GAZETTE: Do you see the consumer market being a major driver in future years?KABERUKA: Absolutely, domestic consumption has been a major driver of recent growth. This has been facilitated mainly by increased internal migration, not simply in large cities but even in small towns, the wide spread of simple technologies like mobile phones, which has increased access to financial services, improved knowledge of what is available in the world. So I expect that in coming years investment, domestic consumption, and growing regional trade will be key drivers, provided we are able to address the issues of jobs and inclusion.GAZETTE: It sounds like you’re pretty confident that this road of democracy, increased stability, and economic growth is a sustainable one?KABERUKA: Of course, nothing is preordained. It all depends on consistency of policies. It depends on what happens in the world, and I’m hoping this crisis in emerging markets will be dealt with. But you know behind every cloud there’s a silver lining. And the silver lining for African economies is the rising real wage in China. Because these companies, whose margins are being squeezed in China, are going to invest in Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos. But now they’re looking at other places, most likely India and Africa. So the next time you go to Ethiopia, you’ll be amazed at the number of Chinese factories and manufacturers around Addis Ababa. And I would like to see that happening more and more.So the slowdown among the large emerging markets and the shift of the Chinese economic model from export-led to domestic consumption-led and increases in real wages might actually open opportunities for some low-income countries to create jobs in their countries.GAZETTE: Is China the biggest development force in Africa today, as far as external countries?KABERUKA: China has been a major player in infrastructure. Definitely, there’s no doubt about this — energy and transport. I think the relationship between China and Africa has been in transformation, but I should tell you that in some countries, Turkey is bigger than China. In other countries Malaysia is bigger than China … There is too much focus on China sometimes, because of the high visibility of what they do. But I think it has been a very productive relationship with all the large emerging markets. Of course, we’re not forgetting our traditional partners.GAZETTE: What about the African economy is most exciting to you right now? Is there a particular project or trend that is most exciting when you think about 10 years in the future?KABERUKA: For a long time, the narrative about Africa was about commodities, what can we get from them? Oil and gas, copper, cobalt …I think as President Obama was saying at the last U.S.-Africa summit: Look at Africa as an opportunity for investment. Why an opportunity for investment? Because of its demographics. We’ll be 2 billion people not that far from now. This is a continent where the demographic depth … the penetration of the simple technologies, and diversification of partners means that it is a continent where the future markets lie. If you’re looking for a short-term kill, you could have a problem. But if you’re there for the long term, this is the place to be. The opportunities are related to the demographics, so there is increased demand for all kinds of services, financial services, health care, education. There will be demand for new technologies, so I think if you had to ask me where the future opportunities are, they’re related to the demographic dynamics.GAZETTE: Let’s talk about your role here …KABERUKA: I’m a Hauser Senior Fellow at the Kennedy School.GAZETTE: What do you hope to accomplish during this year?KABERUKA: I hope to share, like I’m doing now, about development … in Africa. I hope to share with colleagues here at Harvard and students and, hopefully, the wider public, American companies, about opportunities on the continent. I welcome very much the offer the Kennedy School gave me to do this. For the few months that I’m here, that will be my main preoccupation.GAZETTE: And had you been to Harvard before?KABERUKA: I used to come to Harvard in my previous function as a speaker, so I’ve spoken several times at the Law School, at the Kennedy School, so yes, I’ve been here a couple of times. And of course, at the bank I have recruited many staff from here, and many from Harvard Business School, Harvard Law School, the Kennedy School. We know the University very well, and it has been a pleasure working with many of the graduates, both African and non-African.GAZETTE: How about post-fellowship, do you have any plans?KABERUKA: I am going back to my continent. That is where I belong for this task of attracting more investment in Africa and encouraging the dynamics, which I think are both challenging and exciting.GAZETTE: Is Rwanda still your home? You grew up there, right?KABERUKA: Yes, Rwanda is my home … but I’ll be active across Africa.GAZETTE: You were finance minister there before. Do you see a role in government, or will your activities be more across Africa?KABERUKA: I see myself as bringing my knowledge, my experience to bear — my network — across the African economic space. While in my country, that will get special attention, but I want to bring my experience to bear for all of the 54 African countries.
Cooperation crucial in the fight against organized crime The criminal activities of organized crime groups, such as drug smuggling, extortion, kidnapping, and human trafficking, have led to increased levels of violence in several OAS countries in recent years. For example, from 2000 to 2011, the homicide rate in El Salvador jumped from 60 to 69 per 100,000 inhabitants, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). During that time, the number of killings in Honduras rose from 51 to 92 per 100,000 residents. In Guatemala, the number of killings ncreased from 26 to 39 for every 100,000 inhabitants. The violent street gangs Mara Salvatrucha, or MS-13, and Barrio 18, or 18th Street, operate in each of those countries, where they engage in domestic drug dealing, extortion, and firearms trafficking. Those gangs are responsible for much of the violence in El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala. These gangs also have alliances with Mexican drug trafficking organizations, such as the Sinaloa Cartel, which is led by fugitive kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, and Los Zetas. Strengthening joint actions Security officials in Latin America need reliable equipment, technological tools, and sound tactical and strategic plans to succeed in their battle against organized crime, officials from more than 30 countries agreed following a recent conference. These were the main conclusions reached during the IV meeting of the Ministers of Security in the Americas (MISPA) in Medellin, Colombia. Officials from the 35 countries which comprise the Organization of American States (OAS) participated in the conference, which took place Nov. 21-22 2013. Security officials at the conference also determined that regional cooperation between OAS countries is crucial in the fight against transnational criminal threats. Colombian Defense Minister Juan Carlos Pinzón, OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza, and United States Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. were among the officials who attended the conference. The two-day meeting strengthened ties between OAS countries which battle transnational criminal organizations, Pinzón said. “The summit is an instrument that strengthens and reinforces joint actions against transnational crime and criminal behaviors that are common in these countries,” Pinzón said. Many OAS members face the shared threat posed by transnational criminal organizations, Pinzón explained. Transnational criminal organizations are “a global challenge that prevents the development of countries and violates human rights,” the defense minister said. Gangs in Colombia An international commission Colombian security forces are battling several organized crime groups, including the drug trafficking gangs “Los Rastrojos” and “Los Urabeños.” Both of these gangs have alliances with Mexican drug cartels. ”, both linked to drug trafficking in collusion with Mexican drug cartels, especially the Sinaloa Cartel, led by the fugitive of justice, Joaquín “Chapo” Guzmán. Colombian officials are negotiating with representatives of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), which has been fighting the government for 50 years. The ongoing negotiations are taking place in Havana. Organized crime activity increases violence By Dialogo December 19, 2013 At the end of the meeting, MISPA defined strategies for regional cooperation in the fight against transnational criminal organizations. The strategy calls for joint investigation protocols and improving the lines of communication for police forces from different countries to share information. Several OAS member countries are already cooperating in the fight against organized crime. For example, on Nov. 14, 2013 in Piura, Peru, the presidents of Peru and Ecuador agreed to strengthen cooperation on security in the fight against human trafficking and the illegal sale of fuel. The agreement President Ollanta Humala of Peru and President Rafael Correa of Ecuador marked the closing of the VII Binational Ministerial Cabinet. On Nov. 23, 2013, President Correa met with Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos to discuss the progress of the agreements reached during the first Binational Cabinet meeting between the two countries. This meeting was held in December 2012, in Tulcán, Ecuador, where eight agreements were signed on issues of security, transportation, education, tourism, and petroleum. During the MISPA meeting, Insulza urged officials from OAS nations to support the idea of forming an international commission to fight transnational crime. “I hope that the proposal for an Inter-American Commission against organized transnational crime is considered and realized, because even today, in the second decade of the 21st century, we do not have a technical-political agency dedicated to organizing and coordinating collective efforts to address the growing threat of transnational organized crime,” the OAS Secretary General said. “In the five years that have passed since our first meeting in Mexico City, the issue of public security has become a cornerstone for OAS actions. MISPA has been institutionalized and response capabilities of the various agencies have increased,” Insulza said.

Officials hope this effort will breathe new life into the investigation and perhaps attract the attention of individuals who have crucial information regarding the suspect.“This person has struck every day of the week,” said Chief of Detectives Kevin Smith, describing how the suspect operates. “Our resolve is intact,” Smith added. “It’s not diminished. We’re going to catch this guy.”Police officials are hoping the public can help with their cause.“Don’t hesitate” to call, Smith implored. An armed assailant, pictured in these surveillance images, is believed to be responsible for nine robberies and one homicide since December, police said. The suspect, who is still unknown to police, is responsible for 10 robberies in the county, beginning on Dec. 20 last year and continuing into February. The suspect last struck on Feb. 18, stealing cash from a Sunoco gas station on Hempstead Turnpike in East Meadow.Investigators believe the suspect is also responsible for the fatal shooting of 57-year-old Levittown resident Hany Awad, who was gunned down on Jan. 28 inside the same BP gas station where officials held Friday’s press conference. Police have yet to say what, if anything, was taken from the gas station during the homicide. The suspect is described as a black man between 5-feet, 11-inches and 6-feet tall, with a thin build, wearing all black Nike clothing, a black mask, black gloves, black Nike sneakers with red laces and armed with either a black or a silver revolver. The assailant has hit nine gas stations and two 7-Eleven stores in Westbury, Hicksville, and Jericho. Newstalk ZB 14 May 2013Christchurch teenagers are said to be increasingly violent towards their parents – and the earthquakes are being blamed.Staff at the Womens Refuge have noticed an increase in mainly male teenagers domestically abusing their family members – and it seems mothers are the first to cop it.Additional staff have had to be recruited due to increased demands like this at the refuge.Spokeswoman Julie McCloy says the increase has been over the past two years.“Perhaps what we’ve seen is just that accumulation of stress and maybe see young people who have grown up in a difficult or abusive environment and you add that extra stress to it, they don’t know how to handle their emotions.”Ms McCloy says it’s a worrying trend.“Over probably about 25 percent of the police reports we get there’ll be incidents where a young person is involved as a perpetrator of violence so that’s significant.”She says the youngest they’ve seen was 14-years-old.They’re not expecting the boom to drop off anytime soon.http://www.newstalkzb.co.nz/wellington/news/regch/1804940486-worrying-trend-amongst-christchurch-teens

If I go in there where I’m switched on, a time like the Ruiz fight where I am so relaxed, that might be the difference.”While Ruiz has declared he will be going into the clash looking to end Joshua’s career.“I took it to AJ in the Big Apple,” said Ruiz. “And I’m looking forward to ending his career in the desert.” Tags: Timothy Moten
The accusations came on a day when Inter Milan played down prospects of the striker leaving Liverpool to join them in January. Inter vice-president Javier Zanetti takes a different view to Taarabt – labelling Balotelli “a great player” – but the Italians believe recruiting the 24-year-old during the winter could be unrealistic. A return to the San Siro would see Balotelli reunited with Roberto Mancini, who coached Balotelli at Inter and Manchester City. Mancini, who took the reins at Inter last month for a second spell in charge, revealed after Monday’s 2-0 triumph at Chievo that he was keen to bolster his attack. “In certain roles in attack we are lacking,” Mancini told Gazzetta dello Sport. “The club are aware of this but in January it will not be easy.” Balotelli came through the ranks at Inter before being sold to Manchester City in 2010. He joined Liverpool in a £16million move from AC Milan but as well as lacking form, he has missed a number of games with a groin injury and was recently charged by the Football Association over a controversial posting on Instagram. Balotelli has accepted the charge in relation to making racist and anti-Semitic comments on social media but has offered mitigation for his actions. He posted an image of computer game character Super Mario on Instagram which included the words ”jumps like a black man and grabs coins like a Jew”. Balotelli has struggled since moving to Anfield at the end of the summer transfer window and Inter are keen to strengthen their attacking line. However Zanetti told Sky Italia: “A Balotelli return? We all know Mario is a great player but I think it’s difficult because he only just arrived at Liverpool. “In any case, after our game against Lazio (on December 21) we will hold meetings to see what we can do and what is needed in terms of the (transfer) market.” Balotelli has scored only two goals in his 14 appearances for Liverpool, and QPR playmaker Taarabt, who played with him while on loan at AC Milan last season, does not see the Italy international as a top quality forward. Speaking to Italian TV channel Sky Italia, Taarabt said: “Balotelli? Everyone told me he was amazing and I played with him and I can say he is strong but he didn’t seem to me as though he was world class. “He is an ordinary player, not a phenomenon.” Taarabt added: “He is someone who has a strong shot but he doesn’t play for the team. And if he does, he doesn’t score as is the case right now at Liverpool. “He’s had so many chances, from (Manchester) City to Milan, and he’s thrown them away.” Mario Balotelli has been branded “ordinary” and a player who has repeatedly wasted great career opportunities by former team-mate Adel Taarabt. Senior attack Emily Hawryschuk finished second in the country in goals per game (4.88). She has yet to confirm whether she plans to return for a fifth season if possible. Hawryschuk currently ranks sixth in school history both in points (249) and goals (205). Another senior attack, Morgan Alexander, announced she’d return for a sixth year following successful surgery on March 18 to repair her torn left ACL. She started three of SU’s first four games this season before sustaining the injury in practice on Feb. 19. Comments Syracuse finished fourth in the final Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) rankings of the 2020 season. SU’s only defeat came in a 17-16 loss to Stony Brook on Feb. 10 in the Carrier Dome. The Orange (7-1, 1-0 Atlantic Coast) boasted the best scoring defense in the nation, allowing seven goals per game. SU gave up more than eight goals in a game only twice. Senior goalkeeper Asa Goldstock finished with the lowest goals-against average (7.07) in Division-I. And, judging by her Twitter, it appears Goldstock plans to return for a redshirt fifth year if the NCAA officially grants relief to spring athletes. FLORIDA – Some South Florida residents who are Social Security beneficiaries have in recent weeks been receiving unexpected robocalls allegedly from the Social Security Administration (SSA). However, the Federal Trade Commission is aggressively warning that this is a scam which has been spreading across the nation, and are urging seniors not to respond to the calls. The scammers target individuals by calling their phone through a robocall and claiming their Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime.Robo messageTypically the rob- call message left is: “This call is from the department of social security administration. The reason you have received this phone call from our department is to inform you that we just suspend your social security number because we found some suspicious activity. So, if you want to know about this case just press 1 thank you.”In those calls or voicemails, sometimes the scammer wants the individuals called to confirm their SSN, reactivate it or they’ll say their bank account is about to be seized.Preventative stepsThe FTC cautions those receiving these calls whatever the message on the call says not to fall for it. It’s a scam and that’s not the real Social Security Administration calling. The scamis a growing concern for officials, as according to the FTC says so far this year more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, with victims having lost over $10 million. The FTC further cautions anyone who receives these calls should not answer the call, and if they do answer hang up immediately on hearing the message., and never pressed the number 1 as requested. Doing this will indicate to the scammer that they have reached the person their targeting and could open further calls and efforts to scam. One of the main reasons for targeting seniors with this SS scam is that most beneficiaries are very dependent on their monthly SS payment, and maybe quick to respond to the calls if they hear their accounts are being cancelled or their bank account closed. The FTC says be suspicious of any call from a government agency since those agencies don’t call residents with threats or promises or demands for money. Only Scammers do. Don’t trust caller ID – even if it might look like a real call from the SSA, don’t trust it. Never give any caller information like bank account and/or Social Security, and never make a payment. And, always check with the real agency the call is purported to be coming from. The Federal Trade Commission says If you’re worried, hang up and call the SSA yourself at 1-800-772-1213. If you’ve already received one of these robocall Social Security Scams, contact them with a complaint.
Black Stars captain, Andre Ayew, has congratulated the newly-elected President of the Ghana Football Association. In a brief tweet, Andre Ayew said: “Congratulations to our new GFA president Mr Kurt Okraku”Dreams FC Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Kurt Okraku, has been elected the new President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).Mr Okraku fills the spot vacated by former GFA President Kwesi Nyantakyi who resigned in 2018 following damning revelations against him in an exposé by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.Okraku led the way after the first round of voting and was a vote away from becoming the new President of the Association after the second round. He polled 59 votes representing 50% of votes cast with candidates needing at least 60 votes to win.George Afriyie, who polled 40 votes in the first round improved to 43 votes but was still well behind Kurt Okraku.Nana Yaw Amponsah saw his tally slashed from 27 in the first round to 16 in the second. However, as delegates were voting in the third round, George Afriyie conceded, saying he was “a unifier and a team player who works for football.”In the third round, Okraku was endorsed by 93 delegates.Kurt Okraku thus becomes the 7th GFA President since 1992 and the 24th in the Association’s history.Amanda Clinton and George Ankomah both dropped out in the first round with 0 votes.Fred Pappoe also opted to pull out after polling six votes.Kurt Okraku has also received congratulatory messages from the president, Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo, Parliament’s Minority and football’s world governing body, FIFA.He will now serve a maximum of two four-year terms in office following the adoption of the new statutes GFA at September’s Extraordinary CongressThe statutes were approved with an almost unanimous endorsement from the delegates. What are Kurt’s plans? In his manifesto, dubbed “Game Changer”, Kurt Okraku stated that he intended to work toward changing the fortunes of Ghana football and giving it a new lease of life. The manifesto was premised on four key areas or principles:Transparency, Accountability and Annual Audit;Gender and Equity;Good Corporate Governance;Professionalism, Innovation and Investment
But what about the up-and-coming players whose names aren’t mentioned as frequently? After all, some of the league’s all-time greats, including Bart Starr (17th round), John Stallworth (fourth round) and Tom Brady (sixth round) were selected late. Here are five sleeper prospects to watch for ahead of the 2019 NFL Draft: Related News NFL Draft 2019: Even with Case Keenum, will Redskins take a first-round QB? Montez Sweat, DE, Mississippi StateSweat saw his stock dip in February when his pre-existing heart condition was revealed at the NFL combine, but that doesn’t mean he should be counted out.Despite his health concerns, which doctors deemed low-risk, Sweat remains a sought-after prospect. He impressed at the combine, setting a 40-yard dash record for a defensive lineman by running a 4.41 at 6-5 and 260 pounds. Not to mention he racked up 19 sacks and 98 total tackles in his two seasons with the Bulldogs in addition to back-to-back selections to the first team All-SEC squad. He won’t go as early as initially predicted and a first-round selection was even reported to be a stretch at this point, but that could make Sweat all the more intriguing.Jalen Hurd, WR, BaylorHurd got his start as a running back at Tennessee before transferring after the 2016 season. He sat out all of 2017 and later converted to wide receiver as a senior, a move that ultimately paid off as he led the Bears with 69 receptions for 946 yards in his lone season at the position. He managed 1,288 yards rushing his sophomore campaign with the Vols. His 40-yard dash time of 4.64 seconds at the combine wasn’t great, though his recovery from a knee injury could have been a factor, and he made up for it by hitting 35.5 inches on his vertical jump and over 10 feet on his broad jump. At 6-4 1/2 and 228 pounds, Hurd has both power and speed working in his favor.Given his experience and ability to contribute in the backfield, Hurd is sure to be a valuable asset wherever he lands.James Williams, RB, Washington StateWilliams’ name isn’t commonly found on mock boards, though he possesses the qualities worth seeking out in a reliable rusher. In his three seasons with the Cougars, Williams became one of the most productive offensive players in the program’s history. He tallied 16 touchdowns last season, just one short of matching the single-season record set by Steve Broussard in 1989, and added a career-high 81 catches, which was the most receptions among running backs at the FBS level.Williams ended his college career with 2,976 all-purpose yards and 27 touchdowns.Lamont Gaillard, C, GeorgiaGaillard isn’t among the most coveted players at his position, but his resume proves he should be included in the discussions. He measured in at 6-2 5/8 and 305 pounds at the combine, much heavier than he was during his time in Athens in which he started 42 of 44 games played. He also boasts 10 3/8 inch hands, 33 1/2 inch arms and an 81-inch wingspan, all of which he put to good use as he packed powerful punches to pummel defenders.Gaillard has already had formal interviews with the Rams, Raiders and Vikings in addition to talks with at least five other teams, so clearly his competitive nature and leadership qualities have garnered attention. NFL Draft 2019: DaMarkus Lodge relishing chance to prove himself as all-around receiver Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you could probably guess dual-sport star Kyler Murray will be the top pick of the upcoming NFL Draft.Other notable names expected to be called early include Nick Bosa, Quinnen Williams, Devin White and Josh Allen. Terronne Prescod, G, N.C. StatePrescod’s stock took a dive after he failed to draw an invite to the combine and posted lackluster numbers at the school’s pro day.Nonetheless, the 6-5, 334-pound prospect is a powerful run blocker who moves well considering his enormous size and is a terrific anchor in pass protection. He gave up only six quarterback hurries in 342 pass-blocking plays last season.Despite dealing with nagging injuries throughout his college career, Prescod is primed for the pros.

About 40 employees at Jupiter Medical Center received treatment for scabies in recent days, the facility announced Thursday.According to a hospital spokesperson, a critical care cancer patient was admitted to the facility last month and was identified as having scabies while being treated. The hospital says it is now past the peak of the outbreak, and the original patient is no longer at the hospital. The case was also reported to the Florida Department of Health on Thursday. It was apparently isolated to that one patient and one unit of the center, which has since been decontaminated, the hospital says.Scabies is a contagious skin condition caused by a microscopic mite. Symptoms may include itching, a rash and sores.“Jupiter Medical Center is closely working with the Department of Health and is following recommended scabies treatments outlined by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,” a statement reads. It continues, “Jupiter Medical Center is proud of our patient safety record and overall five-star national quality rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.”

A judge says that a confession made by 35-year-old Rafaelle Alessandra Carbalho Sousa will be allowed at trial.Sousa is accused of abandoning her newborn baby in a dumpster in suburban Boca Raton last year, a Palm Beach County judge says.Judge Kirk Volker ruled that the confession made will be allowed at trial. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said Sousa told investigators she delivered a baby girl on May 8, 2019, then wrapped the newborn in a plastic bag and put her in a dumpster at an apartment complex near Boca Entrada Blvd.Sousa’s lawyers wanted her confession to PBSO detectives thrown out, arguing that Sousa was not read her Miranda rights properly before speaking with detectives.Prosecutors argued it wasn’t necessary to give Sousa her Miranda rights at the time.Sousa has pleaded not guilty to attempted felony murder and child abuse.
New tests show that potentially toxic chemicals are in the drinking water supplies of several major US cities, including Miami, New Orleans and Washington, DC,.The Environmental Working Group reported that PFAS, which are manmade chemicals, are referred to as “forever chemicals” because they don’t break down once they’re in the environment. They’re found now in nonstick products, paints, cleaning products and food packaging. The forever chemicals can harm the liver, kidney, and can lead to cancer and reproductive and developmental issues. The group tested 44 sites in 31 states and Washington. The Environmental Working Group said that the only area with clean drinking water is Meridian, Mississippi, which gets its water from a 600-foot-deep well. The areas with the highest levels of chemicals are Brunswick County, North Carolina, and Quad Cities, Iowa,
A Riviera Beach funeral home is facing a multi-million dollar lawsuit, after a family claims the business failed to preserve an 11-year-old girl’s body. The family of Re’Asia Washington claims they noticed her body was decomposed and nearly unrecognizable leading up to her memorial service.“My daughter was deteriorated beyond recognition, her skin has come off her body,” says Ebony Morgan, Re’Asia’s mother. The fifth-grader died on Jan. 22 after suffering an asthma attack while in Georgia.Morgan hired Shawn Johnson Funeral and Cremation Services to handle the arrangements. However, “When I saw her face, it looked like someone had threw acid on her face, or she was pushed into a fire and just left to burn,” Morgan explains. She adds that her daughter’s scalp appeared to be coming off the girl’s head.In the lawsuit, which was filed by Tayson Gaines with the Palm Beach County-based Gaines Firm, the family alleges a breach of contract with the funeral home, fraudulent misrepresentation, negligence, negligent infliction of emotional distress, deceptive and unfair trade practices, and conspiracy. The family has also filed a complaint with the Florida Department of Financial Services’ Division of Funeral, Cemetery and Consumer Services, according to Pierre Ifill, Re’Asia’s uncle and an attorney who is helping Gaines with the lawsuit.“What we got was a mummified body that was not presentable for a service. What we got was excuses,” Ifill says. “That’s not acceptable.”On Jan. 24, an employee of the funeral home transported Re’Asia’s body to Florida from Georgia without embalming or refrigerating it.The funeral home also lacked the disposition permit that is required by Georgia law to move a body across state lines. On Jan. 31, Shawn Johnson allegedly refused to allow Ebony Morgan to see her daughter’s body. Johnson refused again on Feb. 5 and 6.However, Morgan paid Johnson $3,055 on Feb 4.After Johnson refused to allow Morgan to see the body on Feb. 6, Morgan contacted state officials to inquire about her rights to see her daughter’s body at the funeral home, and was told she could.Later that day, Morgan visited the funeral home with a police escort. A few hours later, Johnson returned to the funeral home and rolled Re’Asia’s body into the office. She allowed Morgan and her sister to only see the girl’s face and hand. When Morgan’s sister began taking photos of the body, Johnson reportedly threatened to sue if she showed them to other people. On Feb. 7, Morgan informed Johnson that she was planning to pick up the body. Johnson claimed that it was in a Fort Lauderdale morgue. However, the morgue claims that it does not have a contract with the funeral home.“We have not heard one apology” from the funeral home or anyone associated with the business, Ifill states. The family says it had to cancel Re’Asia’s viewing due to what happened.Morgan and Re’Asia’s father, Reginald Washington, are now seeking $10 million in damages from the funeral home, its three managers — Shandelrio “Shawn” Johnson, Ronald Warnecke and Alterraon Phillips — and the funeral home’s embalmer, Adrienne Leger.

…as 2-week UK funded inter-agency training concludesBy Jarryl BryanWith the conclusion of anti-corruption training that had involved investigators drawn from different agencies, United Kingdom white collar crime expert Sam Sittlington cited the need and possibility for more training to be provided. He made this statement during the conclusion ceremony of the UK funded, two-week long training exercise. Sittlington, who is an adviser to the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU), zeroed in on some of the areas the ranks covered during the training; including preserving the continuity of technical evidence such as computer.“Over the course of the past two weeks, the participants have been involved in learning about fraud investigations, typologies, body language of suspects, tryingInvestigators from several law enforcement agencies pose for a group photo. In the front row, from left: the two UK-based trainers; acting Crime Chief Paul Williams; SOCU Adviser Sam Sittlington; and Senior Adviser to the President, Lieutenant Colonel Russell Combeto identify if someone is a believable liar or unbelievably lying or both.”One aspect, besides power point exercises, involved Sittlington and the trainers presenting ‘facts’ about themselves, which the participants in practise had to decipher the truthfulness of. The SOCU adviser noted some other aspects of operational training when handling fraud probes that the investigators were exposed to.“In terms of the fraud investigations, they learned about the fraud model, they learned about independence, how to conduct their investigations with integrity without conflict of interest. They learned about expertise, how to gather their evidence, they learned about scope of investigations and proportionality.”“They learned about reporting and how their case files may go to the DPP (Director of Public Prosecutions) or Police legal adviser. And then, of course, dealing with technical support and how you deal with computers if you’re seizing computers and other technical equipment, how it is done properly and how you should deal with continuity of evidence,” he related.Trans-national crimeMeanwhile, acting Crime Chief Paul Williams noted the usefulness of partnering with experts from different jurisdictions. Observing that local authorities don’t have the answers to everything, Williams said that an important part of training is acknowledging the culture of the jurisdiction and the existing gaps.He spoke of the severity of trans-national crime. According to Williams, mutual assistance is essential to tackling this scourge. Williams charged the ranks to speak out whenever they observe breach of ethics, even from those in authority. It is understood that the training was arranged by the UK High Commission through its Special Adviser attached to the Special Organised Crime Unit. Training was conducted by two UK experts who are experienced in anti-money laundering and white-collar crime investigations.Trainees were drawn from several law enforcement agencies, including SOCU, the Customs Anti Narcotic Unit (CANU), the Criminal Investigative Department, the State Asset Recovery Unit and the Financial Intelligence Unit. There have been several training initiatives for locals where UK specialists have been involved. Last year, local immigration officers underwent the Risk and Liaison Overseas Network (RALON) training conducted by the UK’s Immigration Enforcement International. The training had covered three fundamental issues: the overview of human trafficking, the enhancing of interview skills when dealing with arriving passengers and overall increased awareness of the latest trends and concerns in the wider Caribbean. The UK has done much of its security sector collaboration through the security reform project, which began in 2007, was scrapped in 2009. It was subsequently reintroduced after talks with the administration.Government believes that, once implemented, Guyana’s security sector will be significantly strengthened; and, hopefully, this will lead to a reduction in the number of illicit activities that take place.President David Granger has also said there is need for a stronger Police Force, one that is better equipped with all tools necessary to function adequately.
Guyana-Venezuela border controversyThe United Nations Secretary General António Guterres’s decision on the Guyana-Venezuela border controversy could take as much as two years to be handed down if needs be, Vice President and Foreign Affairs Minister Carl Greenidge said on Wednesday.Providing an update on the matter, the Minister said that nothing new has happened since the Good Offices Process ended on December 31, 2017 and a commitment was made to clearly outline the way forward by the Secretary General. The Secretary General undertook to make a decision after a process which ended on December 31. “It is possible of course that he could take two years to answer…We are still waiting on the Secretary General to carry out his responsibilities,” Greenidge told Guyana Times on Wednesday. However, the Minister said given the circumstances by which he was invited to carry out his mandate under the 1966 Agreement, Guterres was fully aware of theForeign Affairs Minister Carl Greenidgeurgency of this matter.“And the fact that when the Guyana Government called on him to intervene, it wasn’t only because Venezuelan troops were on our borders, but because the continuation of this controversy caused by Venezuela claiming that the 1899 Treaty was null and void was having an effect on Guyana,” he added.“The Secretary General would know that during personal discussions with his personal representative, we made it very clear that our main concern was to embark on the process identified under the Geneva Agreement, but one that required an urgent resolution…And I don’t think we have to beat him over the head every week to tell him that,” Greenidge continued.Director General of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Ambassador Audrey Jardine-Waddell had told sections of the media that after the Personal Representative to the Secretary General, Dag Halvor Nylander submitted his report on enhanced mediation efforts, the UN Head would decide the next step.“December 31 wasn’t the date of the decision. December 31 was when the process ended….Having received the report from his personal representative, the Secretary General will now make his decision and inform us of the decision,” Jardine-Waddell was quoted as saying. There have been reports that Secretary General Guterres could inform the two countries of his decision before the end of March 2018.“He didn’t have to inform us on December 31st; that was the date when the process ended,” Waddell reiterated.Former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon had given an undertaking that 2017 would have been the last year of mediation to end the border controversy. If that process failed, the controversy would be referred to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the principal judicial organ of the UN.Guyana maintains that the 1899 Arbitral Tribunal Award that settled the boundary issue between Guyana and Venezuela was full and final. But Venezuela has, for several decades, registered its diplomatic and military objection to Guyana’s development of its natural resources onshore and offshore.Venezuela, with almost 40 times the population of Guyana and a territory that is several times bigger, purported to claim in 1968 the entire territorial sea of Guyana by means of the Leoni Decree, which has never been withdrawn. On the military front, Venezuela’s navy in October 2013 seized the Malaysian-owned seismic research vessel, <<
WHEN people put their minds to it, there’s just nothing they can’t do. Proof of this is a new way to save power through the brewing of beer – an experimental system developed by scientists and Australian brewer Fosters. Australians do love their beer, and finding a way to save energy through the use of brewery wastewater while they do it combines innovation with national necessity. If beer can be green, what else is possible? Air-conditioning units that run on the energy produced by your husband’s window-shaking snores? A deep-fry cooker that supplies your french-fry habit and fills up your gas tank? Who says being green can’t be fun? 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Please try again.subscribeCongratulations! You’re all set!
1 Vlad Chiriches Tottenham have announced Romania defender Vlad Chiriches is to join Serie A club Napoli for an undisclosed fee.The 25-year-old moved to north London from Steaua Bucharest in August 2013 but struggled to cement a regular first-team spot at White Hart Lane.Tottenham said on their official website: “We have reached agreement with Napoli for the transfer of Vlad Chiriches. We wish Vlad every success for the future.”Chiriches made just 43 appearances across his two seasons, 27 of which came in the Premier League. With Spurs signing Toby Alderweireld from Atletico Madrid, Chiriches, who has 32 caps for Romania, was likely to fall further down the pecking order at Spurs.
There was a strong rumour doing the rounds that Man United wanted Arsenal’s Mathieu Debuchy. The right back is behind Hector Bellerin at the Emirates and manager Arsene Wenger said the Frenchman could leave the club, but only on loan.“It is possible he could stay in the Premier League,” he explained.Louis van Gaal has both Matteo Darmian and Antonio Valencia playing in the position, but as soon as Debuchy’s named was linked to United he became a hot topic of conversation on Twitter. In 2008, Arsenal signed defender Mikael Silvestre from Man United but he did not exactly dazzle the crowd during his two years in London. As a result some Gooners are hoping Debuchy’s transfer goes ahead, so they can exact some revenge on the club for that deal eight years ago. Here, talkSPORT looks at a selection of tweets below. 1 Arsenal fans hoping to exact revenge on United for selling them Silvestre by flogging them Debuchy

Making neighborhoods more livable and improving traffic were among top priorities cited by neighborhood councils as their leaders gathered Saturday to refine their message to Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and city leaders on where they want to see the city’s money spent. In a half-day session at City Hall, about 150 representatives from neighborhood councils voiced their goals for Los Angeles and its $5.4 billion budget. “It used to be, a mayor would prepare a budget, the City Council would approve it and that would be it. Today, it’s different,” Councilman Dennis Zine told the group. “You are part of the process and the budget will reflect your priorities.” Over the past several months, the city has surveyed neighborhood council leaders on what they think are their communities’ preferred budget priorities. While some members said Saturday they were upset with how the survey was conducted – including areas outside the city’s responsibility – most said they agreed with the priorities that resulted. AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MORESanta Anita opens winter meet Saturday with loaded card Using a weighted factor, the surveys found most respondents were concerned with livable neighborhood issues such as sidewalk repair, parks, libraries and after-school programs for children. That was followed by traffic issues, economic development and homeland security. Zine and budget aides to the mayor cautioned that even with the priorities listed by the group, it did not necessarily translate into where the most money will go. For example, the city’s largest department – the Los Angeles Police Department – receives more than $1.1 billion of the city budget and will continue to receive the highest priority to meet Villaraigosa’s goal of hiring 1,000 more police officers in his four-year term. “But we aren’t seeing the people come in to be police officers,” Zine said. “The mayor and the council put the money in the budget to hire 700 officers this year. They aren’t coming in the front door to be hired. So we have to match our priorities with reality.” Assistant Finance Director Ben Ceja said the city also is facing some grim financial realities – including a structural deficit that has been estimated to result in a $245 million shortfall heading into budget deliberations. “The easy fixes are gone,” Ceja said. “The city has used up a lot of the one-time money that was used in the past. We need to look at real ways to have our revenues meet our expenditures.” Among the problems facing the city, Ceja said, is an expected $200 million increase in labor costs this coming year because of pensions and higher salary expenses. The city also is expected to face growing construction costs amid rising prices for materials, including lumber, steel and concrete. Villaraigosa has brought in efficiency experts to examine how the city can streamline its bureaucracy, Ceja said, but that will result in limited savings, given the demands for city services. One area that neighborhood councils will be asked to consider is a possible increase in fees for trash collection and sidewalk repair. Ceja said the city now pays 67 percent of the cost of trash collection; more than 40 percent of the neighborhood councils surveyed said they would support a $7 monthly trash fee to make up some of the $315 million annual cost. “The mayor is not saying there will be any increases of this sort, but it is something the neighborhood councils should consider as they look at the budget priorities,” Ceja said. The neighborhood councils now will be asked to select 14 representatives – two from each of the city’s seven planning areas – who will meet with Villaraigosa in February to discuss their recommendations. The mayor also will be meeting with department heads to get their budget requests before submitting a budget plan to the City Council in April. Neighborhood councils’ inclusion in the city’s budget process was started by former Mayor James Hahn. Villaraigosa has expanded involvement to include a ranking of city services. Liverpool have calmed fears over the fitness of Naby Keita, insisting the midfielder is ‘fine’ after being taken to hospital with severe back pain. The £53million summer signing was stretchered off the field just 19 minutes into his Champions League debut for the Reds against Napoli on Wednesday night. Klopp will be hoping Keita’s back problem is not too serious 3 3 Keita’s Champions League debut in a Liverpool shirt ended in injury heartbreak After the game, manager Jurgen Klopp admitted he was not sure about the extent of the problem, telling the media: “It is his back, that’s what I heard.“I don’t know exactly. We have to wait.” 3 The Premier League club later confirmed Keita was taken straight to hospital as a precaution, where he underwent a number of medical checks.Liverpool stayed overnight in Naples following their late 1-0 defeat, and the club were expected to assess Keita’s condition again on Thursday morning before flying home. And the club have now issued an update, with the club telling talkSPORT host Jim White the player is ‘fine’.Liverpool also confirmed to the station that the midfielder is in contention to play in Sunday’s top-of-the-table clash against Manchester City.“I spoke with Liverpool this morning,” said Jim White.“They told me Keita is travelling back with the rest of the squad and is in better shape than they thought.“They said he could well make the City game this weekend, too.” Liverpool issued a statement on Wednesday evening confirming Keita had been taken to hospital with a compliant of back pain after he left the pitch on a stretcher and medical cart in Naples. It appeared the midfielder suffered to problem earlier in the game and carried on playing, but eventually found it too difficult to continue and sat down in the middle of the pitch during play, before being replaced by club captain Jordan Henderson. The statement read: “Liverpool Football Club can confirm Naby Keita was taken to hospital in Naples on Wednesday evening during the first half of the Champions League fixture with SSC Napoli.“The midfielder started the game at the Stadio San Paolo, but was substituted inside the opening 20 minutes, alerting the team’s medical staff to back pain.“Keita was transferred to a local hospital with the club doctor, where – with the midfielder’s agreement – he underwent a number of precautionary health checks to assess his condition.”
MVC Release/Video DES MOINES, Iowa – Senior midfielder Vanessa Kavan was featured in the MVC Scholar-Athlete Spotlight this week in recognition of her success on the field, in the classroom, and in the community. The Drake women welcomed a new member, Breslyn, to the team earlier this year. The six-year-old Breslyn was diagnosed with leukemia at age three, but she rang the bell in 2018 signaling her final chemo treatment. “I think being involved in the community is so important because it’s the best and easiest way to better your environment,” Kavan said. “It’s a great way to do the right thing. If you’re reaching toward this common goal with your community, you can make yourself better, you can make others better, and make all of your surroundings better. It’s incredibly important to live a positive and happy life.” A marketing major with a minor in graphic design, Kavan touts a 3.99 GPA and has been recognized before for her achievements in the classroom. In 2018, Kavan was named to the MVC’s Scholar-Athlete First Team, and earlier this year she received the President’s Council Academic Excellence Award. “Those are super meaningful because they show that I’ve put in so much work and it’s being recognized,” Kavan said. “It’s just a great honor to be a scholar athlete for the MVC.” Print Friendly Version Kavan has completed multiple internships in her time at Drake, highlighted by her time working for Above and Beyond Cancer and Closing the Care Gap. She also makes sure to fill a backpack with school supplies every Christmas to donate to a family in need. Breslyn and her family started Breslyn’s Blankets of Love to ensure the kids in hospitals would feel safe and comfortable. Kavan and her teammates raised money for the foundation and spent an afternoon making blankets to donate. To qualify for the spotlight, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.20, have completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution, and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing. Student-athletes are also evaluated on their campus involvement and community service. Drake head coach Lindsey Horner pushes an initiative called Community in Action, or CIA, that encourages her team to spend time improving the lives of those around them. Kavan and her teammates dedicated themselves to the Courage League, an organization that enables kids with disabilities to participate in sports. Story Links
How do you know if your housewrap really works? In the good old days, we weatherlapped 3-ft. courses of building paper underneath our wall claddings, and that seemed to work just fine. But then along came all sorts of snazzy “gift wrappings” (a.k.a. housewraps) in handy, 9-ft. rolls. Some claimed to be both air barriers as well as water-resistive barriers; others claimed to be vapor permeable. Along the way, it got pretty confusing about just exactly what the housewrap’s job is in our walls. (For a practical and detailed perspective on housewraps, see “Making Sense of Housewrap”.) Benchtop version of the hydrohead test with gross crosswoven. The water started dripping through the gross crosswoven housewrap as soon as it was poured into the pipe. Benchtop version of the hydrohead test with SBPO. There is a full 22-in. column of water in the pipe, and the SBPO is not leaking (those drops of water you see is water getting around the fitting and clamp, not coming through the housewrap). While we may well want our housewraps to do more than one thing for our walls, the International Residential Code (IRC) 2006 building code tells us what the primary job is:R703.2 Water-Resistive Barrier. One layer of No. 15 asphalt felt, free from holes and breaks, complying with ASTM D 226 for Type 1 felt or other approved water-resistive barrier shall be applied over studs or sheathing of all exterior walls. The housewrap has to resist water at least as well as traditional building paper. But the phrase “other approved water-resistive barrier” (WRB) is where everything heads south for builders and designers selecting housewrap. There are dozens of tests or test conditions that housewrap manufacturers invoke to claim approval. The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) is hard at work straightening out this mess (ASTM Task Group E06.55.07), but headway has been mighty slow. The current draft of the housewrap standard recognizes three tests for resistance to water (manufacturers must choose one):ASTM D779 – the “boat” test: Originally designed for just regular old paper, this test involves making a little folded-up boat from the test material, placing it in water, and timing how long it takes an indicator dye to show up. In the building industry, this is mostly used for building papers, but the perforated housewrap (e.g., Owens Corning PinkWrap) and gross crosswoven (e.g., Pactiv housewraps, except its UltraWrap) guys like this low- or no-pressure test.AATCC 1 127 – the hydrostatic pressure or “hydrohead” test: This test is from the plastic baggy guys and involves clamping the test material to the bottom of plastic pipe and then filling the pipe with water to a height of 20 in. or so, then waiting for the test material to leak three drops. This is the test that most of the spun-bonded polyolefin (SBPO) manufacturers like. It’s a high-pressure test— the full 22 in. is roughly equivalent to a hurricane-force wind of more than 200 mph.CCMC 2 water-ponding resistance test: In this test, 1 in. of water is placed in a bowl-shaped sample of the wrap. The water cannot pass through the bowl for at least two hours. This pressure in test is somewhere between the other two.The great thing about all three tests is that a work bench version of each is really easy to do. Paul Fisette, head of the Building Materials and Wood Technology Department at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, was the first to adjust the ASTM D779 “boat test” to mimic real building conditions (called the “modified boat test”). Just stick a paper towel as a blotter between the housewrap and sheathing and wood siding, and press these components together as they would be in a typical wall. Then take the “sandwich” apart and see if the paper-towel blotter got wet.See the pictures on the right for some benchtop non-ASTM versions of the modified boat and hydrohead tests. The non-perforated SBPO (translation: Tyvek or Typar) passed both tests, and the gross crosswoven housewrap (translation: Pactiv Raindrop) failed both. Building paper passed the modified boat test but is not really suited to the hydrohead test.Bottom line? I think you need to benchtop test your own housewraps until ASTM gives us a standard that separates the wheat from the chaff. These benchtop tests are easy to do, and you can see for yourself which WRB materials hold water, literally. In my experience and benchtop testing, perforated and gross crosswoven housewraps simply don’t pass muster.More on what else we might want housewraps to do in a subsequent blog.………………….1 This is the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC).2 This is the Canadian Construction Materials Center (CCMC).
UPDATED on Nov. 10, 2015Officials in Boulder County, Colorado, are bringing more new houses into the net-zero energy fold.Beginning on January 1, houses of 5,000 square feet or more will be included in the county’s BuildSmart program. Originally put in place in 2008, the program is part of a broad initiative designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and already requires new dwellings of 6,000 square feet and larger to meet the net-zero requirement. The rule applies only to houses in unincorporated parts of the county, not to incorporated municipalities such as Boulder and Longmont.Ron Flax, the building sustainability examiner for the county, told GBA that in 2013, 2014, and the first half of 2015, there were 94 new homes built in the unincorporated part of the country, 36 of which were 5,000 square feet or larger and about a dozen of them with a HERS rating of zero or lower. The goal of land-use planning has been to push more residential construction to incorporated towns and cities, most of which have their own building departments. “It’s tough to guess what the future holds,” he said.Flax said by email that when the BuildSmart program began, all homes of 8,000 square feet or more were required to have a HERS score of zero (or below). Later, the threshold was lowered to 6,000 square feet.In this latest revision, commissioners had considered extending the requirement to houses of 4,000 square feet or more, but in the end settled on the 5,000-square-foot threshold. The county’s ultimate goal is to have all new homes be capable of producing as much energy as they consume on an annual basis by 2022. The requirement would not apply to existing houses or those being remodeled. Higher construction costs predictedThe average new home in Boulder County is about 4,000 square feet, with construction costs of roughly $200 per square foot. Without offering a breakdown, the Daily Camera said that adding renewables with enough capacity to power an average house would add about 15% to construction costs, or $120,000.The 15% estimate comes from local architects and builders and is the “generally accepted cost associated with net-zero builds,” the article said. Not so, Flax said.Net-zero energy homes can be built for market or near market prices and don’t require a premium approaching 15%, he said. But conventional designs with lots of glazing might indeed require very large renewable systems to meet the net-zero requirement.“We have put considerable efforts into understanding the cost implications of our regulations,” he said in an email. “What we have found is that when building large custom homes there is no simple relationship between construction costs and energy efficiency. It is important to know that we have almost no production home activity in Boulder County.“When people are building custom homes, if they are properly incorporating energy efficiency in their initial designs then the added cost for a HERS of zero is manageable,” he continued. “If the design team is ignoring energy efficiency and then trying to figure out how to hit a HERS zero after the major decision are already made, the costs can indeed become significant.”Flax added that the county is addressing energy conservation in other ways, including required offsets for big energy users like heated swimming pools, snow-melt systems, and hot tubs, and efforts to help the many cannabis growers in the area to adopt more efficient production methods.County Commissioner Elise Jones told the Longmont Times-Call it makes sense to apply the net-zero energy rule to larger homes because they’re bigger-than-average energy consumers. Commissioners believe that holding off on applying the standard to houses of 4,000 square feet or more represented a “balanced approach to creating homes that have minimal impact on the environment,” the report said. The Daily Camera said that Boulder County “may be the only government in the U.S.” to legally require all new homes meet the net-zero energy standard by 2022.“Nationally, there are communities and states with net zero goals,” Jim Meyers of the Southwest Energy Efficiency Project told the paper. “But the plans do not specify to the level of detail that Boulder County has specified.” This post was updated to correct the year in which the BuildSmart program began, and to add comments by Ron Flax about the added costs of building net-zero houses

Financially more secure than athletes in any other sport in India, the current generation of cricketers should be thankful to Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Anil Kumble for fighting for them, feels former batting star Virender Sehwag.Referring to the trio’s fight for share in BCCI revenue for players back in 2001-02, Sehwag said it went a long way in guaranteeing financial security that is enjoyed by the current crop of players. The BCCI is on the cusp of having its own Players’ Association within the nest few days but the seeds were first sown by Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Dravid and Kumble as they formed a ‘Players’ Association’ demanding a share from the BCCI’s TV rights deal.”We had to fight to get a share of revenue from BCCI but I don’t think there is any such precedence in any other sport. Had the likes of Tendulkar, Dravid and Kumble not fought for our rights, we wouldn’t have been where we are today,” Sehwag said on the sidelines of newly launched IPKL Kabaddi League floated by the New Kabaddi Federation (NKF) and aired on DSport.”If you see, there was no friction after that,” he added. The context of his comment was IPKL organisers committing 20 percent of their revenue reserved for players.”If IPKL is sharing 20 percent revenue for players, it’s a good thing. Other sports can learn from this move,” said Sehwag.”I once spoke to former India hockey captain Sardar Singh, who told me that he used to receive mere TA/DA while representing the country and no match fees. It will be great, if football and hockey can take a cue,” he added.advertisementWhile there is already a Pro-Kabaddi League backed by the national federation, Sehwag sees no harm in having a parallel league that can benefit India players.”Don’t confuse this with cricket. BCCI’s revenue pool is so huge that it can possibly be much more than all Olympic sports put together. Also in cricket, we have so many tournaments, we don’t have place for another league.”However in Kabaddi, there is no harm in having two different leagues and allowing players to play both. We have recently lost to Iran in the Asian Games and it hurt me. We should have a bigger pool of players,” said the former India captain. Also Read | How Sachin Tendulkar broke the ice with a young Virender SehwagAlso Read | Sachin Tendulkar reacts to Ganguly’s clarification on India vs Pakistan World Cup match

Roma remain long-time admirers of the former Empoli star and are currently leading the chase for his signature, but the Serie A side will have some competition from Ligue 1 side Monaco. Sources have confirmed to Goal that Monaco have started asking about Rugani’s availability, though negotiations of an actual deal have yet to take place between the two sides. The centre-back would address a need for either Roma or Monaco, with the Serie A side having shipped 48 goals in 38 league matches last season while finishing sixth. Monaco’s record at the back was far worse as the club struggled through a terrible season in Ligue 1, letting in 58 goals and finishing just above the relegation zone. Rugani’s place with Juventus is up in the air at the moment, with the club boasting Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci as first-choice centre-backs. The club also landed Merih Demiral from Sassulo and Ajax star Matthijs de Ligt this summer, likely leaving him as part of a third-choice lineup. The defender played just 15 times in Serie A last season, down from 22 the year before, as Juventus cruised to another league title, and could see his minutes fall even more drastically this term. Despite that, he seems content to stay with the Turin side should a move not get done. New Juventus boss Maurizio Sarri and Rugani have a good relationship from their time together with Empoli, where Rugani was named to the Serie A team of the year. Juventus get their title defence under way on August 24 against Parma in what will be Sarri’s first official test as boss. The club will then face last year’s runners-up, Napoli, in their second match of the Serie A season on August 31.

The Elders today expressed shock and deep dismay over the latest incident of heavy civilian casualties in Yemen resulting from the Saudi-led aerial bombing campaign. They called on the United States and United Kingdom, the two permanent members of the UN Security Council who are the main supporters of the campaign, to take decisive steps to prevent further needless deaths.Over 140 people died and more than 500 were injured at a funeral hall in Sana’a, Yemen’s capital, when it came under repeated attack from the air on Saturday.Kofi Annan, Chair of The Elders and former UN Secretary-General, said: “Over the past 18 months, civilians have borne the brunt of this bloody conflict. All too frequently, protected locations such as hospitals and civilian gatherings such as weddings and, now, even a funeral have found themselves under attack. This is simply unacceptable. As the principal supporters of the Saudi coalition, we believe the United States and United Kingdom have the main duty to ensure there is no recurrence.”Independent researchers estimate that over a third of coalition air strikes have hit civilian targets. The Houthi rebels and allied forces have frequently also been guilty of breaches of international humanitarian law during fighting. The Elders noted that the US is “reviewing” its support for the Saudi-led military campaign in the wake of the weekend’s attacks and that the UK’s Foreign Office has raised its own concerns with Riyadh, stating that there can be “no military solution” to the conflict. Washington and London must now use their considerable leverage with Saudi Arabia to push hard for an early ceasefire and resumed negotiations for a political solution. They also called for much greater international attention to be paid to the desperate plight of Yemen’s civilian population. According to the UN, over half of Yemen’s 27-million people are suffering from malnutrition and in need of humanitarian assistance.

Increasing health and safety regulatory control, rapid energy cost escalation and rising operating costs as mines go deeper are driving the global industry to react vigorously. Simsmart Technologies has recognised this and has perfected a mining solution adapted from its military business to control and optimise underground ventilation, pumps and other electrical equipment. To address these matters, Simsmart now offers the mining industry a complete SCADA system called SmartEXEC (EXpandable Energy Control). Working closely with major mining companies, several SmartEXEC systems are currently being implemented. SmartEXEC is a turnkey expandable solution that integrates existing PLC or DCS based controls, their expansion, instrumentation and optionally personnel and machinery tracking. SmartEXEC fully supports Ventilation-On-Demand (VOD). SmartEXEC offers five levels of system implementation from an entry level to a complete solution adaptable to each customer’s needs. Each implementation level offers unique benefits.Level 1 offers surface/remote manual control and monitoring using a low maintenance, very flexible integrated HMI (fans on-off or VFD speed setpoint, controllable doors, regulators/dampers).Level 2 offers event based and scheduling control applicable to all implementation levels. Events are executed on a time basis, on signal threshold or on demand (i.e: zone flushing, shutdown, pre blast, post blast, shift start, high gas concentration.)Level 3 offers operator setpoint for flow, gas concentration and temperature control.Level 4 offers flow control via ventilation demand calculation as a function of personnel location, machinery location and operating status. A link to a tagging and tracking system is required for this implementation level. Tracking may cover zone in/out gates to full tracking coverage. SmartEXEC may be provided with a turn-key tracking system or link to an existing or planned tracking installation.Level 5 offers mine wide air distribution optimization and surface fans energy optimisation.

Journal information: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (Phys.org) — In a tale worthy of Sherlock Holmes, scientists in the School of Chemistry at the University of Bristol, UK have solved a biochemical mystery that had previously proven elusive for 70 years: How the fungus Talaromyces stipitatus produces stipitatic acid (6), which is a tropolone, one of an atypical group of fungal natural products – that is, small molecules produced by genetically encoded pathways – with a seven-carbon ring. (Most natural products, such as cholesterol or phenylalanine, have five or six carbons in rings.) The researchers used a two-part biosynthetic approach – gene deletion and alternate genetic expression – to investigate the molecular pathway in question. Professor Russell J. Cox, Postgraduate student Jack Davison and other researchers engaged in the study faced several long-standing obstacles to showing that 3-methylorcinaldehyde is the direct product of a fungal nonreducing polyketide synthase (NR-PKS) which most likely appends the methyl group from S-adenosyl methionine during biosynthesis of the tetraketide, and which uses a reductive release mechanism to produce the observed aldehyde. “Gene knockouts have been one of the most useful tools in the toolkit of the biosynthetic chemist,” Cox tells Phys.org, “but knockouts can’t answer complex questions like these. We now make extensive use of heterologous expression – that is, moving the gene to a ‘clean’ host and switching it on.”The scientists then monitor the host organism for the production of new compounds which we isolate and identify. The chemical structure of the new compound tells them a great deal about the chemistry which must have been used to make it. “In this case,” Cox continues, “we showed that the TropA gene encodes a polyketide synthase which makes 3-methylorcinaldehyde. Expression also allows us to do more complex experiments – for example, by truncating or mutating the gene – and in this way we discovered the reductive release mechanism and the fact that the programmed methylation occurs during chain extension rather than after chain-building and ring formation.”Tropolone biosynthesis was one of the longest-standing problems in the field of biosynthesis and some of the most distinguished organic chemists of the last century were fascinated by it, but progress had been very limited. “We realized that combining chemical knowledge with genome sequence data could give us the start we needed,” Cox explains. “We already knew a lot about polyketide biosynthesis in fungi, and this allowed us to narrow down the potential genes involved to just four. We then used chemical knowledge to narrow this further to a single gene cluster.” Proof then came from the knockout and expression studies. Copyright © PNAS, doi: 10.1073/pnas.1201469109 Looking ahead, the team is currently working on systematic methods to express many genes in fungi. “At present this is easy in bacteria, because in bacteria a single promoter can switch on lots of genes in parallel,” notes Cox. “In fungi, however, each gene needs its own promoter, so this has limited progress. In collaboration with our colleagues in the School of Biological Sciences at Bristol we’re developing systems which can express a dozen or so fungal genes in parallel. This will allow the researchers to investigate much more complex systems in the future. In addition, Cox adds, “I do believe that computational biology and chemistry will eventually provide answers to complex questions like this – but at the moment, while computational methods allow us to formulate good questions, lab work is still needed to find the answers. We’re working in an area with very many unknowns, so it’s difficult for computational methods which rely on current knowledge to act predictively with any accuracy. In fact,” notes Cox, “this is a powerful reason why fundamental discoveries are still so important: they’ll form the basis for future predictions.”Cox points out that he and his team will also continue to study the TropB-D enzymes in vitro. “Chemical methods of classical enzymology will allow us to determine their precise mechanisms.”Cox also articulates how comparing the T. stipitatus tropolone biosynthetic cluster with other known gene clusters allows clarification of important steps during the biosynthesis of other fungal compounds, including the xenovulenes, citrinin, sepedonin, sclerotiorin, and asperfuranone. “Fungal genomes generally are much bigger than their bacterial counterparts by roughly 10 times, and they contain many more genes and gene clusters encoding the biosynthesis of complex compounds” he explains. “Barely any of the known fungal gene clusters have been linked to the molecules they must encode. Our work now allows the understanding of a set of genes which encodes the biosynthesis of polyketides followed by oxidative modifications and these occur frequently in fungi. Until now these clusters were mysterious, but now we can – at least partially – begin to understand what they may do. Secondly, knowledge of the gene clusters will allow us to go hunting for new clusters more effectively.” For example, puberulic acid is a potent antimalarial compound, but its gene cluster is unknown – and the team predicts that the cluster should be very similar to the T. stipitatus tropolone gene cluster. In terms of other research and applications that might benefit from their findings, Cox says that understanding biosynthetic pathways is a key strand of the new science of Synthetic Biology. “One can think of the gene clusters and biosynthetic enzymes they encode as building blocks of new biological entities. In the future,” he concludes, “it will be possible to combine the genetic and chemical knowledge of biosynthetic pathways to produce bioactive compounds – such as drugs and agrochemicals – using biology rather than chemistry. This offers huge advantages in terms of sustainability.” Citation: Friendly Fungi: Elucidating the fungal biosynthesis of stipitatic acid (2012, May 18) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2012-05-friendly-fungi-elucidating-fungal-biosynthesis.html How tropolones synthesized in fungi: 70-year-old chemical mystery solved This document is subject to copyright. and dismissed allegations of foul language For those scratching their heads over how the 2G spectrum corruption scandal that held parliament of the world’s largest democracy to a cocktail of pandemoniums could end in a damp squib court verdict that acquits all the key accused in the core case this is the moment to call a memorable line from the Bollywood hit "Jolly LLB" As the judge played by Saurabh Shukla says "Courts don’t act on truth but on evidence" Between the truth and the evidence falls the shadow of acquittals — and we can say that as much of the 2G scam verdict by the special court as on rulings connected with some riot cases connected with the communal violence that shook Gujarat in 2002 Politicians are happy when their own kind are acquitted in courts but point to inadequacies in law enforcement when their rivals win in other cases Manjul toon From that point of view the day belongs to the Congress party and the DMK allies in the UPA 2 government led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh News of the prosecution led by the NDA going in for an appeal against the special court verdict will be drowned out in the blowing conches of prime-time spokespersons of Opposition parties Coming days after the Gujarat election verdict in which the BJP won an uncomfortable victory politics is now in a new phase Are common people any smarter in the 21st Century The simple fact is that corruption cases typically drown in technicalities that the common man or woman cannot understand while clever lawyers and smart politicians rely on these very technicalities to wriggle out of difficult situations It does not help that the judicial machinery has several layers — from trial courts to high courts and then on to the Supreme Court the files get bigger while time stretches on Intervening years alter the political landscape that in turn affects the prosecution in many cases Let us look at the 2G scam a bit more in detail One aspect is the lack of transparency frequent changes in rules and the abominable business of allocating precious spectrum on a "first-come-first-served" basis that stank so much that a sea of Chanel or Christian Dior perfumes could not drown out the bad smell that woke up the Comptroller and Auditor General of India The government’s constitutional auditor spoke purely in terms of imputed revenue losses giving the scam a Rs 176000 crore figure that certainly misled the public — but was exploited to the hilt by the BJP and its successful prime ministerial aspirant Narendra Modi In truth the 2G scam was partly about subsidising spectrum to help boost telephony in the country and partly about doing it through a bizarre dubious process that smelt of corruption As Shalini Singh a reporter who chronicled the scam in its key years records in detail DMK’s Andimuthu Raja changed rules every now and then in a manner that violated commonsensical ideas of fairplay And then as she argues the UPA vaguely but falsely linked its policy decisions to a regime set by the earlier NDA government to fend off accusations of corruption Both Raja and party mate Kanimozhi are now heaving a sigh of relief but grey areas in the 2G spectrum allocation which were extensively criticised by the Supreme Court remain on the table Consider the idea that fertlisers have been subsidised by successive governments to help farmers But no one really offered subsidies to fertiliser companies on a "first-come first-served" basis Spectrum a resource that ushered in a technological revolution that touched a billion people was given off in a cavalier way that was bound to raise questions — which it did The BJP with its own preference for rhetoric turned it into a political advantage — just like Congress linked the Gujarat riots of 2002 to Modi’s administration as state chief minister In both instances specific cases involved technicalities beyond the pale of easy understanding — because errors of omission or commission involving half-spoken and unspoken words have been used to argue cases Clarity in such a context involves how vagueness works in the judicial system As this is written the details of the special court ruling are not out but it is clear that the clinching element of a corruption case — the establishment of a "quid pro quo" linking licences and spectrum to payoffs and loans — may have been lacking But we may point to the conviction of former chief ministers Lalu Prasad Yadav Om Prakash Chautala and J Jayalalithaa to show how judicial processes and political processes move in different ways Yadav went to jail Chautala is still there and Jayalalithaa died months before a verdict that might have sent her to one The wheels of justice grind slowly but well as the cliche goes But politics has its own dynamic and popular leaders and powerful parties use half-time scores in a long game to claim victory From that point of view this is indeed a moment of relief for Congress and DMK Tomorrow is another from the last “Man tadpat Hari darshan ko aaj” (Bharat Bhushan “Baiju Bawra” music Naushad and lyrics Shakeel Badayuni) is one that can’t be left out for the virtuosity of Rafi’s performance – the NewsLondon: World athletics chief Sebastian Coe has defended the system of "therapeutic use exemptions" (TUEs) after medical data involving dozens of top sportsmen was leaked by a cyber hacking group Many of the targeted athletes have been revealed to have received TUEs for the use of substances that would usually be on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) banned list TUEs can be issued to athletes who have an illness or condition that requires the use of normally prohibited medication File photo of Sebastian Coe Presidant of the IAAF AFP Among those with a history of TUE use who have had their medical details leaked as a result of a hack into the WADA system by cyber group Fancy Bears which is believed to be based in Russia are American tennis stars stars Serena and Venus Williams American gymnast Simone Biles and British Tour de France-winning cyclists Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome There is no suggestion that any of the named athletes have done anything wrong However the leaking of their records has re-opened the debate about TUEs and in particular whether the system is open to abuse from competitors gaining a performance advantage by taking banned drugs when they are not suffering from a relevant medical condition But International Association of Athletics Federations president Coe told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Sportsweek programme on Sunday: "I think the TUEs system is a good system "Do we have to make sure that it is not being abused Yes of course There is potential for that (exploitation) but I don’t think it is commonly the case" added British middle-distance great Coe the Olympic 1500 metres champion at both the 1980 Moscow and 1984 Los Angeles Games "Can the public have trust in it Yes I think they can but it will need permanent vigilance" explained Coe who oversaw the IAAF’s decision to ban Russia from major track and field events following WADA revelations of "state-sponsored doping" Coe also insisted the TUE process was subject to detailed medical checks "TUEs are only given on the basis of an independent panel it is not a general practitioner signing them off" Difficult area Coe who used a spray to combat asthma during his own track career said athletes deserved to have their medical records kept confidential "They have the right to the same types of privacy that we all have around our private medical information" he said "But it is a difficult area It might be conditions that are being treated around cancer or fertility issues Should the athlete themselves be expected to put that into the public domain "We should be very protective of this information because as we’ve seen in the last year it is capable of being horribly interpreted" Meanwhile Coe called for reform of WADA to enable the global body to be effective in the ongoing campaign to rid sport of doping "WADA was created 17 years ago and it has done a phenomenally good job but the world has dramatically changed in that period" Coe said "The discussions should be focused on the challenges of having an organisation that has the dual policy of policing and regulation whether it’s the same authority or same organisation that’s done that "Don’t
