Warren Buffett and Terry Smith have excellent track records at outperforming the stock market over a long time period. Their investment styles are focused on the quality of a company, rather than seeking to predict economic growth or try and second-guess investor sentiment. This strategy could be a sound starting point for investors who are seeking to find the best UK shares to buy today. It may enable them to cut through the political and economic challenges faced right now to prosper from a likely stock market rally in 2021 and beyond.5G is here – and shares of this ‘sleeping giant’ could be a great way for you to potentially profit!According to one leading industry firm, the 5G boom could create a global industry worth US$12.3 TRILLION out of thin air…And if you click here we’ll show you something that could be key to unlocking 5G’s full potential…Warren Buffett and Terry Smith’s focus on qualityWarren Buffett and Terry Smith have historically sought to buy companies that have a competitive advantage over their peers. For example, a business may have a unique product that cannot be easily replicated, or it may have a high degree of customer loyalty that allows greater margins than its peers. While identifying a competitive advantage is naturally very subjective, figures such as a company’s return on equity or return on invested capital provide evidence of its wide economic moat. There are many variations of such formulas, but essentially they provide an investor with guidance on how much ‘bang for their buck’ a company provides.Focusing on fundamentals to find the best UK shares to buy nowBusinesses with long track records of high and consistent returns on capital are likely to pique the interest of Warren Buffett and Terry Smith. Unlike other investors, however, they do not pay too much attention to the economic outlook. In fact, Buffett has historically preferred to invest when the economic outlook is weak, while Smith seems to place little emphasis on economic forecasts. As such, they seem content to buy companies with competitive advantages, whatever the economic outlook. This could mean that the best UK shares to buy now are those businesses with substantial competitive advantages, but that trade on relatively attractive valuations because of an uncertain economic outlook. They may be able to generate impressive returns in a likely long-term stock market recovery.Diversification to reduce riskWarren Buffett and Terry Smith have historically run relatively concentrated portfolios. While this means they only invest in their best ideas, it can lead to relatively high volatility. As such, investors may wish to ensure they build a diverse portfolio of UK shares that includes companies operating in a variety of sectors and regions. This may help to reduce overall risks in what could prove to be a challenging economic and political environment in 2021. It may also lead to more impressive returns, since an investor can gain exposure to a range of businesses that may benefit from a likely stock market recovery after the 2020 stock market crash. Pyrgos to captain Scotland as Cotter makes ten changes for USA game

first_img Glasgow Warriors scrum-half Henry Pyrgos will captain Scotland against the USA having replaced Greig Laidlaw in the No 9 shirt from the win over Japan on Wednesday.Laidlaw scored 20 of Scotland’s 45 points at his home ground of Kingsholm in their opening game, but with just four days rest before their clash with the USA, coach Vern Cotter has rung the changes.Tim Visser and Sean Maitland replace Tommy Seymour and Sean Lamont on the wings, and with Lamont not on the bench the Warriors’ man will not be able to add to his 98 caps this time out.Cotter changes his entire front row, with Wednesday’s replacements – Ryan Grant, Fraser Brown and Jon Welsh – given the start, while powerhouse Richie Gray replaces his brother Jonny in the second row. >>> Watch: Japan deny Scotland try with last ditch Goromaru tackleAlasdair Strokosch and Josh Strauss come in to the back-row in place of Ryan Wilson and David Denton respectively. How England selection is shaping up after the autumn series

first_imgThe new caps stood up, the results were good. Now, with just the Six Nations to come before the World Cup warm-ups, Eddie Jones has to decide on his best England team To the chagrin of many, Danny Cipriani is set to miss out. He’s been brilliant this season, and was brilliant last season, but if Jones was going to include him in his plans the Gloucester fly-half would surely have featured this autumn. Do you agree or see it differently? Who would be in your starting team? Let us know by emailing [email protected] with your views.Follow Rugby World on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. LATEST RUGBY WORLD MAGAZINE SUBSCRIPTION DEALS How England selection is shaping up after the autumn seriesNine Tests now separate England from their opening RWC 2019 match against Tonga in Sapporo, the Six Nations championship being followed by four World Cup warm-ups. Nine opportunities to nail down selection for the big one.It looks monumentally difficult. In previous jobs as head coach of Japan and Australia, Eddie Jones never had such depth to choose from. In Japan, he asked foreign players to show the way when, soon after he started, the country’s U20s got crushed 125-0 by Wales. With England, he can draw on one of the world’s most powerful player pools – but what has he learnt from the four-match Quilter International Series?Three wins and a one-point defeat to New Zealand represents satisfying progress after the trials of the five-match losing streak earlier in the year.Jump to it: Pete Samu goes airborne as he tries to halt Mark Wilson at Twickenham (Getty Images)Asked for an overview of 2018 after the 37-18 defeat of Australia, Jones said: “We had a tough Six Nations. We got a ton of things wrong and needed to regroup. I thought in South Africa (in June) we did that.“Not in terms of winning the series but in terms of the togetherness of the team and how we want to play rugby and go forward. This (November) series was just another step forward.”We look at the squad, unit by unit, to assess how the land lies ten months out from the World Cup in Japan…BACK THREESomeone is going to be left seriously disappointed players here, such are the riches available.Elliot Daly has had seven successive starts at full-back but remains unconvincing, despite his searing pace and power off the kicking tee. Mike Brown may return or Anthony Watson – full-back at the end of this year’s Six Nations – could slot back in, once he has recovered from a torn Achilles tendon.Almost certainly, the best man for the job is Alex Goode, who was on duty at Twickenham at the weekend as a summariser over the PA system (he predicted a 32-24 England win). But as we’ve said before, he simply doesn’t appeal to Jones.center_img Upward curve: England line up for the national anthem ahead of the 37-18 win against Australia (Getty) Daly and Watson can both play wing, of course, where Jonny May’s strike rate (18 tries in 40 Tests) should make him an automatic choice.Chris Ashton (20 in 42) has barely been seen this month because of injury but one suspects he will prove too good to leave out on the other flank.Joe Cokanasiga may be 21 and with only two caps to his name, but his brute power gives England a different option and he has a great chance of going to the World Cup. And then there’s Jack Nowell, another physical player and a British Lion to boot.Even if we ignore Brown and his 72 caps’ worth of experience, that’s six players who deserve to go to Japan. Jones will probably only have room for five.No ordinary Joe: Cokanasiga has made an immediate impact and gives England power out wide (Getty)MIDFIELDMore headaches. Henry Slade has been the 13 since the summer tour onwards, and has looked increasingly at home. But Jonathan Joseph had the shirt in the Six Nations, only losing his spot because of ankle surgery in April. So it’s anyone’s guess whether Slade or Joseph is front of the queue, or indeed whether Daly would still be considered there – he wore 13 against the Springboks in 2016.Ben Te’o and the fit-again Manu Tuilagi, fresh from his first England minutes for more than two years, offer muscle and directness, but is there room for both at the World Cup?The Ford-Farrell axis that started the year so beautifully in Rome is possibly a thing of the past, in terms of starting positions. We must assume that Farrell will steer the ship from ten.Alex Lozowski, playing 12, didn’t do himself any favours against Japan but is versatile – he played his first pro game as a winger on Sunday, at Leicester, and was excellent. Unfortunately, the experiment of playing Nowell at 13 against the Brave Blossoms was aborted early because Ashton’s injury forced the Exeter player back out to the wing.Regarding Henry: Slade has been solid at 13 and could be a back-up fly-half if needed at Japan 2019HALF-BACKSThis looks a little easier. Farrell and Ford are the fly-halves while Ben Youngs, Richard Wigglesworth and Danny Care are set to be the No 9s, it being conventional to take three scrum-halves to a tournament. It’s tough on Wasps’ Dan Robson, consistently outstanding over the past two or three seasons, but even at 35 Wigglesworth has shown he has a spring in his step. Six of his 33 caps have come off the bench this year. FRONT ROWSignificantly, when asked about the pluses of the Quilter Series, Jones began by name-checking new cap Ben Moon and his Chiefs team-mate Alec Hepburn.Jones knows that Joe Marler’s shock retirement has depleted the loosehead cupboard. Mako Vunipola is a shoo-in once he returns from a calf injury and one suspects the aggressive Ellis Genge will nudge ahead of Moon once back from a shoulder injury.Tighthead is arguably the single biggest concern for England, with Dan Cole, 31, currently deemed surplus to requirements after eight years and 85 Tests’ worth of sterling service.Cole is shining at the moment for Leicester Tigers so he could yet feature in Japan. More likely, however, is that Kyle Sinckler and Harry Williams will share the No 3 shirt.Get well soon: Mako and Billy Vunipola look on after being injured in Saracens’ win at GlasgowThe England boss was beaming Kyle Sinckler’s Man of the Match performance against Australia. “He scrummed magnificently. Whoever picked Man of the Match (Sky Sports) today deserves a pat on the back,” he said.As things stand, Vunipola is the only prop from England’s RWC 2015 squad set to make it to Japan. At hooker, Dylan Hartley and Jamie George are the only show in town. Jones’s failure to give more game time to a third hooker, who will be needed within a 31-man World Cup squad, is one of the biggest oversights of his reign. It probably doesn’t matter too much who starts and who finishes, although Hartley’s throwing looks the stronger of the two. However, a third hooker, probably Luke Cowan-Dickie, needs to be involved at some point. The Exeter man has acquired six caps under Jones, all of them off the bench.Game time needed: if Luke Cowan-Dickie is to be England’s third hooker, let’s see him play (Getty Images)SECOND ROWEngland had three locks on the 2017 Lions tour and most observers felt it was a travesty that a fourth, Joe Launchbury, didn’t join them.Launchbury, presently sidelined with a knee injury, George Kruis and Courtney Lawes all played at England 2015, so if you add in the new wonder that is Maro Itoje you have your lock quartet. The fly in the ointment, so to speak, is Bath’s Charlie Ewels, who’s won a sizeable ten caps under Jones and is happy running a lineout. Is it possible to take five locks and count Itoje as a lock-flanker hybrid? Would it be nonsensical to ever play Itoje as a six when he is England’s best second-row?That is a big question to answer but logic decrees that Itoje must stay put at four and that Ewels will just have to be on standby for Japan.Men in possession: Maro Itoje and Courtney Lawes are part of a formidable array of English second-rowsBACK ROWAnd so to the endless conundrum that is the back row. No 8 Billy Vunipola has to start when available because there is no carrier like him, but his succession of shoulder, knee and arm injuries will be causing consternation at HQ.Squad regulars Nathan Hughes, Chris Robshaw and Sam Simmonds missed all or most of the autumn series, but in their absence others stepped up to the plate magnificently.Mark Wilson gave England the ‘dog’ associated with Robshaw, Jones saying: “He’s a good tough player. Gives everything he’s got, rolls his sleeves up, not afraid to put his head in dark places. Excellent player.”Wilson can play right across the back row, a valuable commodity for a World Cup. Tom Curry was very good at seven until an ankle injury halted his involvement, and Sam Underhill has been even better, adding low-slung, ball-carrying power to his savage tackling.Box seat: Sam Underhill has a big-game mentality and has edged ahead of Tom Curry at seven (Getty)Quins’ Jack Clifford, who won ten caps from 2016-17, could yet emerge as an option if he can finally get an injury-free run of games going. He is a fine lineout operator and were Vunipola and Underhill to play at eight and seven, the six would need to have that in his armoury.Brad Shields, the incumbent blindside, is being used by England in a lineout that is arguably too dependent on Itoje. The Wasps player is improving with every game and looks set to make Japan 2019.Saracens’ Michael Rhodes is foremost among those who could yet change that picture, and Rugby World is also a huge Don Armand fan. But with a maximum of six back-row places available, and perhaps only five, this is going to be one big dog-fight over the coming months. Here’s how an England XV might look at next year’s World Cup: A Watson; C Ashton, H Slade, M Tuilagi, J May; O Farrell (co-capt), B Youngs; M Vunipola, D Hartley (co-capt), K Sinckler, M Itoje, C Lawes, M Wilson, S Underhill, B Vunipola.Replacements: 16 Jamie George, 17 Ellis Genge, 18 Harry Williams, 19 Joe Launchbury, 20 Nathan Hughes, 21 Danny Care, 22 George Ford, 23 Elliot Daly.last_img read more

Algerian soccer heroes shine for Gaza

first_imgAlgeria’s soccer team competing in the World Cup in Brazil took the prize this year. No, not for winning the cup, although it’s true the Fennec Foxes got further along in the tournament than ever before. The prize the Foxes won was that of advancing the politics of the World Cup spectacle. The cup, like most international sports events in these days when capitalism in its imperialist stage dominates the world, is run to make profits, however popular soccer may be. And the World Cup is the most popular of all such competitions. FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association), the soccer conglomerate running the games, establishes the rules to maximize these profits. In Brazil this meant using police power to displace the poorest inhabitants of favelas and spending billions to build stadiums that may be of dubious value beyond the games. The Fennec Foxes struck a blow that improved the atmosphere. Not only did their team perform well on the field, making it to the round of 16, but they did something much better: They made a collective decision to donate their $9 million prize money to the people of Gaza.As the Foxes’ star striker, Islam Slimani, told the media when the Foxes were being cheered by tens of thousands of people in Algiers: “They need it more than us.” (Independent, July 3)The donation comes as a welcome sign of solidarity with the people of Gaza, who have been facing relentless bombing from the Israeli settler state. It is also a sign that someone can be a star without losing his/her political conscience.FacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmailPrintMoreShare thisFacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmailPrintMoreShare thislast_img read more

Hogs Released Early at State Fair Due to Health Concern.

Source: State Fair Previous articleCrop Decline Continues in IndianaNext articleInterior and Defense Will Work Together to Promote Renewable Energy on Federal Lands Gary Truitt Facebook Twitter In a proactive measure, the Indiana State Fair dismissed all the animals from the Swine Barn this afternoon, one day earlier than scheduled.  The action comes on the recommendation from the Board of Animal Health after six pigs in the 4-H show developed temperatures over 105 degrees, an indicator of potential illness. “We consider this decision to be very prudent in light of what we have seen during the last several weeks at county fairs all over Indiana, as well as in other states,” said Bret D. Marsh, DVM, Indiana State Veterinarian.  “We’ve had an unusually high number of reports of illness associated with swine shows this season.  Overall, the swine at the State Fair this year have done well, and dispersing the hogs as soon as possible is the best thing that can be done for animal health.“These 4-H exhibitors and their families have been extremely supportive of our efforts this year,” said Dr. Marsh.  “We checked the temperatures of about 2,000 hogs during the check-in process, which was a big undertaking. They understand why it’s necessary to take these precautions and they support our efforts to make this a great fair for everyone.” SHARE Facebook Twitter Home Indiana Agriculture News Hogs Released Early at State Fair Due to Health Concern. Weinstein judge won’t recuse himself after scolding producer for phone use in court

first_imgDNY59/iStock(NEW YORK) — A New York trial judge on Thursday denied a motion by Harvey Weinstein’s defense team to recuse himself from the case after vigorously scolding the Hollywood producer earlier this week and threatening to revoke his bail for using a cellphone in the courtroom. In a 15-minute ruling read aloud from the bench, Manhattan Supreme Court Judge James Burke defended his admonishing of Weinstein, contending the producer was “defiant and challenging to court officers” on Tuesday when he was ordered to stop using his phone in court. Burke went on to acknowledge that “I was just trying to scare him” into ceasing use of the phone. Burke noted that he has repeatedly warned Weinstein to not use his phone in court, but his exasperated warning on Tuesday — in which he asked Weinstein “Is this really the way that you want to end up in jail for the rest of your life, by texting and violating a court order?” — prompted Weinstein’s attorneys to seek his recusal, for the scolding and for a number of other rulings adverse to the defense. The motion seeking Burke’s recusal cited “comments [that] were so inflammatory, biased and prejudicial that they have virtually gone viral.”On Thursday, the judge defended his behavior. “Let me first just state the obvious,” said Burke, after denying the motion. “There’s nothing prejudicial or inflammatory for scolding the defendant. If using strong or even hyperbolic language succeeds after stern admonitions have failed, then the court has accomplished its goal.”Burke said Weinstein brought the censure on himself.“Your client was noncompliant and defiant and challenging to court officers when asked to put away one of his phones,” he said, referring to Tuesday’s dust up. “Ironically, I was concerned that there might be a perception that Mr. Weinstein was getting better treatment and more chances than other defendants, but I didn’t worry about that too much, because the reality is — judges seems to always give at least three strikes, and then one final transgression.”“And your client is certainly at that place,” Burke added.Weinstein is facing five felony counts for allegedly raping one woman in 2013 and forcibly performing a sex act on another. Jury selection continued on Thursday following Burke’s ruling and is expected to continue into Friday. “I certainly never actually meant that I was going to put your client in jail for life,” Burke added. “We are obviously [going to] great length to obtain for Mr. Weinstein a fair and impartial jury, which is to say in plain language: All I meant to do was scare him enough for him to discontinue the use of his phones.”Copyright © 2020, ABC Audio. Fiancee of late Aaron Hernandez speaks out on his sexuality after docuseries

first_imgJanuary 28, 2020 /Sports News – National Fiancee of late Aaron Hernandez speaks out on his sexuality after docuseries Written by FacebookTwitterLinkedInEmailABC(NEW YORK ) — The fiancee of the late Aaron Hernandez is speaking out for the first time since the release of a Netflix new docuseries on the life of the football-star turned-convicted killer, including rumors about his sexuality. In a sit-down interview with ABC News’ Amy Robach that will air Wednesday on “Good Morning America,” Shayanna Jenkins-Hernandez said that while Hernandez did not express to her in any way he may have been gay or bisexual, if he did, she “would not have loved him any differently.”Hernandez, a former New England Patriots tight end, was found guilty of murder in April 2015 for the killing of Odin Lloyd, the 27-year-old fiance of Jenkins-Hernandez’ sister, who was found shot to death in a suburb of Boston about two years earlier. After Hernandez’s trial, and prior to his suicide in his prison cell in 2017, his alleged relationships with men became a topic of discussion. The Netflix docuseries “Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez,” which was released in January, spoke to a high school teammate and friend of Hernandez, Dennis Sansoucie, who said the two engaged in a sexual relationship while in high school.Jenkins-Hernandez said that she knew of Sansoucie, but doesn’t know him well and he wasn’t very involved in Hernandez’s adult life. However, she said through tears, “you start to feel for people that may be hiding inside how they really feel. And I– I feel awful for that.”Jenkins-Hernandez, who was engaged to Hernandez at the time of his suicide and shares a daughter with him, said he was “certainly a man to me. There was no behavior that made me think differently.”She wishes that if Hernandez had been hiding his sexuality, he would have come to her.“I would not have loved him any differently. I would’ve understood,” Jenkins-Hernandez said. “Yes, of course, it would’ve been hard to watch somebody walk away or to live a different life. But it’s not shameful.”“I think it’s a beautiful thing,” she added. “I just– I wish I was able to tell him that.”Watch the interview on Wednesday at 7 a.m. ET on “Good Morning America.”Copyright © 2020, ABC Audio. Cloud Peak coal production down sharply in second quarter

first_img FacebookTwitterLinkedInEmailPrint分享S&P Global Market Intelligence ($):Data reported to federal officials suggests Cloud Peak Energy Inc. could post a weak second quarter in the face of ongoing domestic coal pricing pressures.Cloud Peak’s three coal mines reported 11.6 million tons of coal production in the second quarter, down 3.7% from 12.1 million tons in the prior quarter and falling 17.8% from the 14.1 million tons of coal produced in the second quarter of 2017, according to data reported to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration. It was the lowest production quarter for the company since its IPO in 2009, Seaport Global Securities LLC analyst Mark Levin wrote in a July 16 note.“While [the second quarter] is typically a weak quarter for all [Powder River Basin] producers, we think [Cloud Peak’s] production, even by those standards, is a disappointment,” Levin wrote. “We suspect low natural gas prices, coal plant retirements, and increased use of renewables continue to weigh on demand.”Levin added that while export markets are a bright spot, that does not offset underlying concerns about domestic demand for Powder River Basin coal. He reiterated a neutral rating on the company.MSHA data shows quarter-over-quarter production increased by more than a half a million tons at Cloud Peak’s Spring Creek mine, which is where the company generally sources the coal it sells into export markets. However, the company’s domestic utility-focused Antelope and Cordero Rojo mines both significantly lowered coal production compared to the same quarter a year ago.More ($): Coal production from Cloud Peak Energy mines down sharply in recent quarter Cloud Peak coal production down sharply in second quarterlast_img read more

The key to understanding millennials

first_img 16SHARESShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblr Misconceptions about millennials pervade politics and business, says pollster and author Kristen Soltis Anderson, including the idea that they don’t vote. But understanding this generation is becoming increasingly important for both politicians and businesses, says Anderson, co-founder of Echelon Insights and author of “The Selfie Vote.”“You have to understand millennials from a corporate perspective because they’re changing a lot of society’s institutions,” she says. “They’re also beginning to vote. So we’re now in an era where millennials seem quite eager to make their voices heard.”Anderson, who’ll address the 2018 CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference, examines societal trends and how they affect consumers’ decision-making, from their politics to their purchases. continue reading »last_img read more

The power and practice of empathy

first_img“Empathy is about standing is someone else’s shoes, feeling with his or her heart, seeing with his or her eyes.  Not only is empathy hard to outsource and automate, but it makes the world a better place.”  Daniel H. PinkIt’s a beautiful sentiment and so true—and yet so challenging sometimes.Navigating the world of financial services is difficult. For most members, coming to or contacting the credit union is an activity they have to do rather than one they want to do. They find themselves temporarily without a job, or having reduced hours, or worse yet, wondering how to keep themselves and their loved ones safe.  It generates anxiety and stress. And when things don’t go as planned, or something doesn’t work as promised, emotions are heightened and logic can go out the window. On the other hand, when things are going really well, and the member expresses positive emotion around the situation, empathizing enables you to reinforce the member’s positive feelings toward you and the credit union. September jobs report falls below expectations

first_img“The September jobs report was a troubling one, as job growth fell below expectations and thousands left the workforce,” said NAFCU Chief Economist and Vice President of Research Curt Long. Non-farm payrolls rose 661,000 during the month, and while the unemployment rate fell 0.5 percentage points to 7.9 percent, the labor participation rate also fell – dropping 0.3 percentage points to 61.4 percent.“In all, the labor force shrunk by nearly 700,000 workers in September, 89 percent of which were female,” Long said in a new Macro Data Flash report, noting that the drop in female labor participation coincided with the start of the school year. “Meanwhile, the ranks of the unemployed continue to tilt away from temporary layoffs and toward permanent ones; the latter group swelled by 350,000 during the month. With those additions, permanent job losers represent 2.3 percent of the labor force, which is just over half the peak during the Great Recession. It was not until 2017 that the figure returned to its pre-crisis level,” he added. Results among the major industries showed modest gains in most sectors, led by services growth. Leisure and hospitality gained 61,000 jobs, as did education and health services. Professional and business services (+25,000 jobs) and construction (+16,000) also saw gains. While construction continues on Fairmont Park Apartments, residents raise concerns

first_imgBut Town of Union officials 12 News spoke with said it’s not, and provided 12 News with a list of other properties that are in the area. TOWN OF UNION (WBNG) — Construction is underway for the Fairmont Park Apartments, but some residents who live nearby are raising concerns. Some residents even wondered if the construction should be happening at all, questioning if the apartments are on FEMA buyout property. “We wanted to have a nice, quiet neighborhood, to be living in something residential. I mean we didn’t want anything commercial or I would’ve chosen something like that. You can get a lot less expensive places if you move into places commercially zoned,” said Kelly M., who rents in the neighborhood. Town of Union officials also added that they have been meeting with residents since last year when the project began in order to maintain transparency.last_img read more

The grand opening is scheduled for Friday, September 14, and the event continues with the National Festival of Croatian Original Folklore, on September 15 and 16, and closes with a ceremonial parade and the biggest shock circle on Sunday, September 16. Lovers of Slavonian traditional culture and folklore, whether original or choreographed, can enjoy it from September 7 to 12 during the County Folklore Festival, and for the youngest, on September 8 and 9, Children’s Vinkovci Autumns are held.62 children’s groups and 76 folklore societies, 30 carriages, 20 riders will perform at the ParadeThe opening ceremony, the National Folklore Festival and the Parade of participants of the 53rd Vinkovci Autumns will be broadcast live by Croatian Radio and Television, and 62 children’s groups and 76 folklore societies, 30 teams, 20 riders, a total of over 4.5 thousand participants will perform at the parade.“During the Folklore Evenings this year, 50 societies from Vukovar-Srijem County will present themselves. This year there will be 76 folklore societies, 30 carriages, 20 riders, predecessors and everything that gives beauty to the event”, Said the secretary of ZAKUD Stjepan Đurković.Among other events on Vinkovci Autumn Square, it is necessary to highlight the 10th International Hip Hop Festival called “Hip-Hop on Orion”, September 8 and the traditional fashion show prepared for citizens on September 10 by the Loreen Model Association. Due to great interest, this year part of the offer will be exhibited in houses in the Pedestrian Zone, and for the second year in a row, the Wine City will open its doors to guests in Vinkovci, from 12 to 16 September.”Vinkovci Autumn – 10 days, 24 hours of fun, 20 concerts and almost 7.5 thousand participants. The OFF program is also rich, and we have been working on it a bit more in recent years. This year, we will invest additional efforts in arranging the city park. The wine town is limited to 5 days due to the harvest, unlike last year, but I believe that everyone will enjoy the program that takes place in three different locations. We are also thinking about a different arrangement of Slavonski sokak, so I believe that visitors will find new content because every year we try to bring something new.”, Said the director of the media house Novosti, Mirjam Jukić.See more about the program and all activities at www.vinkovackejeseni.hrIn the meantime, there is no need to worry about it. ”RELATED NEWS:VIDEO AS A POWERFUL TOOL IN PROMOTION: WATCH THE PHENOMENAL ANNOUNCED VIDEO OF THE 53rd VINKOVAC AUTUMN,See more about the program and all activities at www.vinkovackejeseni.hrIn the meantime, there is no need to worry about it. ”RELATED NEWS:VIDEO AS A POWERFUL TOOL IN PROMOTION: WATCH THE PHENOMENAL ANNOUNCED VIDEO OF THE 53rd VINKOVAC AUTUMNlast_img read more

Anjorin to ink new Chelsea contract

first_img “It was like he had been beamed back down to earth as a complete player overnight! “After that, he was always the standout player; people knew him before he even knew how to spell his name. He is a goalscoring midfielder in the Frank Lampard mould. Lampard was one of his idols, but so were Lionel Messi and Zinedine Zidane. “He has a high level of technical ability, great finishing quality and a great passing range. We felt that the Chelsea environment was perfect for Tino. “It has really stretched him. The training has always been harder than the matches, he’s highly competitive and he just wants to get on the pitch and beat his opponent.” Having progressed through Blues’ academy, Anjorin was part of the Under-18s side which won an unprecedented quadruple in 2018, with only the UEFA Youth League alluding him of the major trophies available to young players in England. The Poole-born teenager made his first team bow in late September against Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup while his first Premier League appearance came on Sunday as he stepped off the bench for the closing stages of the 4-0 win over Everton. Though he was overshadowed by the performance of Gilmour, it was clear that Anjorin will not struggle in senior football given his frame, though – like Loftus-Cheek – it has played a role in him picking up more injuries than he would have liked in his early career. He also needs to work on building up both his speed and acceleration when running if he is to take the next step and become a regular first-team footballer at the top level. Whether he makes that step at Chelsea or elsewhere, however, is up in the air somewhat. With the Blues looking to tie down a number of their prodigious young talents, the likes of Callum Hudson-Odoi, Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori have all signed new contracts over the past 12 months. Anjorin, however, has not been able to agree terms, and as such is now just over three months away from entering the final year of his current deal. Talks have been ongoing regarding a renewal for some time, with the Blues having previously been confident pen would be put to paper sooner rather than later. Their interest in Birmingham City starlet Jude Bellingham, who is being heavily linked with Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund, has further slowed matters, and there is some concern another of the club’s brightest prospects may follow in the footsteps of Tariq Lamptey – who joined Brighton in January – and leave. Read Also:Teen star Gilmour vows to keep proving worth at Chelsea Chelsea must now fight to show Anjorin that he is in the right place to further his development, and handing the England youth international more first-team opportunities will likely help. But should they fail to tie him down then there is set to be a long list of suitors for one of the most impressive teenage footballers the Premier League currently has to offer. FacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmail分享 Tino Anjorin is set to sign a five-year extension with Chelsea. Tino Anjorin The 18-year-old made his Premier League debut in Sunday’s 4-0 win over Everton as a late substitute. And The Sun says Anjorin is poised for a new contract, despite still having remaining on his current deal. The Blues have already locked down youngsters Mason Mount, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Reece James and Marc Guehi to long-term deals. Anjorin joined the West London club as a six-year-old. Few academies are getting a better showcase this season than Chelsea’s. Whether by choice or forced by the club’s transfer ban, Frank Lampard has turned to numerous homegrown talents in a bid to maintain the Blues’ status among the European elite. The latest to earn their opportunity was Billy Gilmour, whose star turns in midfield against both Liverpool and Everton in front of live television audiences in the UK should ensure that he becomes a household name sooner rather than later. Gilmour, of course, does not have the same history as some of Chelsea’s other young players in terms of his upbringing, with the Scot having been brought to west London from Rangers in 2017. Tino Anjorin joined Chelsea at Under-7s level, and has worked his way through the various age groups to now be on the cusp of earning a regular berth in Lampard’s first-team squad. A physically imposing presence who has been compared to Ruben Loftus-Cheek due to his stature, 18-year-old Anjorin has been the shining light in Chelsea’s youth team this season, contributing 11 goals and six assists thus far. Born to a football-obsessed family of Nigerian heritage, Anjorin was christened Faustino to pay homage to former Newcastle and Colombia forward Faustino Asprilla. It is a tradition that has run through the family, with his younger brother named Zico after the Brazilian legend. His father, Sheriff, has played the lead role in overseeing his development and revealed that he has been overpowering opponents from a very early age. “When he was three-and-a-half, he went and joined in a training session with six-year-olds,” Anjorin senior told Goal. “He was dribbling better and shooting with more power than those older than him. Allardyce hits back at Senegal

first_img Sakho’s appearance for West Ham infuriated many inside the Senegal camp, with Alain Giresse’s side crashing out at the group stage following Tuesday’s defeat to Algeria. The former Metz striker came in for criticism from fans on Twitter and Giresse also questioned how Sakho could possibly have been deemed fit enough to turn out for West Ham. But Allardyce defended the decision after the win at Ashton Gate, revealing Sakho travelled by limousine instead of with the rest of the squad and insists he does not expect his top goalscorer to be banned until the end of the African Cup of Nations, as has been suggested. “I’m not worried at all he could be facing a ban whatsoever,” he said. “We’ve stuck to every rule and regulation in the book by the FA, by FIFA and by UEFA. We have not breached any rules and regulations whatsoever and I have to say I’m extremely disappointed by Senegal’s reaction. “He (Sakho) is coping fine because he has got enough to burn his bridges with, they (Senegal) are falling out with us. “If anything we should be falling out with them but we are not, we are keeping it at a very professional level, like we always do and like I said we have done everything in the rules to comply with what is happening.” Allardyce also confirmed Sakho will travel to Anfield for Saturday’s Barclays Premier League encounter against Liverpool in the same manner he made the trip to Bristol, but his compatriot Kouyate may not be available for selection against the Reds following a late return. The Hammers striker came off the bench to score the only goal in their FA Cup fourth-round victory over Bristol City on Sunday, despite having been ruled out of Senegal’s African Cup of Nations squad with a back injury. And the relationship between club and country could also be soured further after Allardyce said he had struggled to communicate with midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate about his return to east London. The midfielder had linked up with Senegal but Allardyce and West Ham had struggled to contact the former Anderlecht man and arrange his journey home – with Kouyate now expected back later on Thursday. “The other player that we had available has been difficult to find over the last 48 hours,” Allardyce continued. “We know where he is but we have had trouble finding him. If you speak to other managers in the Premier League, if they are honest like I am they will tell you the same story. “We are expecting him back today after chasing him down for the last 48 hours. He could play against Liverpool.” Allardyce played down reports linking both Sakho and fellow summer recruit Enner Valencia with a move to London rivals Chelsea and insists he will not be looking to bring in any other forwards during the January transfer window. “By email, text or phone? How have they sounded us out?,” the 60-year-old replied when asked about reported contact from Chelsea. “The only way it has been sounded out is through the media, certainly not through club to club.” “With us having Andy Carroll, Diafra Sakho, Carlton Cole and Enner Valencia we have more than enough front men to cope with the demand for the rest of the season. In the summer we’ll reassess our aims and the squad but for now we’re fine with the four options we’ve got.” Although a new striker may not be on his shopping list, Allardyce again said he would like to complete a move for Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher. The 30-year-old Scot has been told he can leave Old Trafford on a free transfer and Allardyce remains interested, whilst also confirming a deal is close for Hamilton full-back Stephen Hendrie – although he would not link up with West Ham until the summer. “It is still a possibility. It’s not dead yet, so it still could happen,” Allardyce said of a move for Fletcher. “You have to be patient sometimes. We’re not desperate, as we’ve got several good options in midfield but we want to add to that if we can.” Press Association Sam Allardyce has continued a bitter war of words with Senegal football officials and insists West Ham did nothing wrong in playing Diafra Sakho last weekend.last_img read more

Badgers looking to regain winning ways against Huskies

first_imgAfter dropping a pair of close matches to No. 24 Washington and Portland University last weekend, the Wisconsin men’s soccer team (4-4-0) is looking to regain some confidence as it hosts Northern Illinois University (5-2-1) tonight at the McClimon Soccer Complex at 7 p.m.The Badgers enter tonight’s match following an exhaustive September schedule in which the team has journeyed to tournaments in Milwaukee, Albuquerque and Seattle over the past three weekends. Upon returning from the extensive traveling, head coach Jeff Rohrman is pleased to be back in Madison and playing at McClimon.”It’s been a grueling 10 days or so [of traveling],” Rohrman said. “You know, having gone to New Mexico and out to Seattle — it takes a toll. The travel and obviously the high level of competition we faced made things difficult, so it’s nice to be home here for a little bit of a stretch.”Although the Badgers were victorious the last time the Huskies visited Madison, Northern Illinois has won six of the last seven matches between the two teams, and is currently entertaining a two-game win streak after consecutive 1-0 victories over UW-Green Bay and Saint Louis University. Rohrman need only think back to last year’s match up with the Huskies to know what to expect out of this year’s squad. “Last year [Northern Illinois was] very good and they beat us down there,” Rohrman said. “They’re a much improved team, very talented, very athletic, and they’re a dangerous team that should not be taken lightly. They’ve got some kids that can really do some good things, and we’ll have to come out and play one of our better games to beat them.”Although Wisconsin posts an inferior record, the Badgers have faced a tougher schedule than the Huskies thus far in 2005, losing to such ranked opponents as No. 12 Fairleigh Dickinson, No. 3 New Mexico and No. 24 Washington. In response to last weekend’s losses, Rohrman hopes his team can play faster against the Huskies and employ more options in the attacking third.”I think we need to establish a little more rhythm in our attack,” Rohrman said. “We need to play a little bit quicker because there were times [last weekend] when our movement wasn’t so great and we just weren’t seeing things as quickly as we needed to. Our spacing also needs to be a little bit better against a team like Northern Illinois. We’ve addressed a few of those things and we’ve worked on them a little, so I’m hoping we can come out and get some things going in the attack.”A victory tonight for the Badgers would provide the team with a much-needed spark for the upcoming Big Ten season. And for the seasoned players, a win tonight would provide them with something more: payback.”We definitely need to come out with a good showing,” sophomore midfielder Dirk Pearson said. “I mean, we definitely need a win because it’s an important regional game and they’re a close rival. They also beat us last year, so we’re all looking to get some revenge.”last_img read more

Men’s Hockey: Sitting down with star freshman Alex Turcotte

first_imgThe University of Wisconsin men’s ice hockey team (7-10-1, 2-7-1-1 Big Ten) is having a rough go at the dish lately, losing in several underwhelming performances. Despite having a record under .500, they remain one of the nation’s top and most exciting programs. Part of this success? Wisconsin’s highly-recruited freshman center, Alex Turcotte.Turcotte was drafted with the fifth overall pick in the 2019 National Hockey League Entry Draft by the Los Angeles Kings and stands as the third-highest selected Badger in the NHL Draft in school history.Men’s Hockey: Badgers NHL draftees set to take off in freshman seasonFollowing an NHL Draft that featured four Badgers, the University of Wisconsin squad is loaded with young talent. Alex Turcotte, Read…The 5-foot-11, left-handed, 180-pound centerman from Island Lake, Illinois, has had a terrific freshman season through 14 games, scoring over a point-per-game on average. He is a top contributer for the Badgers in points (15), goals (6), assists (9) and powerplay goals (4).He was one of four Badgers to be drafted in the 2019 NHL Draft, others being freshmen Cole Caufield, Owen Lindmark and Ryder Donovan. These four have all played together on different U.S. National teams prior to this season. Turcotte described how going to school, practicing and playing with these three has created a tight bond between them.“That’s where we became best friends,” Turcotte said. “Having that encouragement has been great and it’s like another support piece. You get to lean on guys like that because you’re going through the same thing as them, so it’s been great.”While his friends and teammates have been extremely supportive of him, nothing has served as more of a support piece to Turcotte than his dad, Alfie Turcotte, who was drafted 17th overall in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft by the Montreal Canadiens.Alex discussed his feeling on being drafted twelve spots higher than Alfie.“He’d always kind of chirp me about it,” Alex said. “It was all fun and games, so I kind of jab him back a little bit now.”Even with some playful jabs, the relationship between the two is purely loving.Turcotte was enthusiastic about the amount of support his father has given him, as it has helped him become the player and man he is today.“I’m here and I am who I am today because of him,” Turcotte said of his father. “He’s definitely been the biggest influence in my life on and off the ice, so he’s been a great supporting piece.”Alex has had a tremendous impact on the Badgers’ offensive success this season, but it is not just him carrying the load. Wisconsin’s freshmen as a whole have been the glue of the team and have had an enormous impact on the season thus far.Turcotte pointed out how, despite the team’s youth, most of the players are used to playing against older competition.“A lot of us [freshmen] played juniors, so we played against older guys when we were younger than them, so we kind of have some of that experience,” Turcotte said. “It’s still a big adjustment. Even from the USA team to here … we can always improve and definitely have a lot of things to work on.”Another adjustment for Turcotte has been playing in front of a larger crowd at the Kohl Center as opposed to playing in front of the crowd at the U.S. National team games. Yet, this has been a relatively smooth transition for him despite the daunting nature of the task.Men’s hockey: Wisconsin’s overloaded 2019-20 freshmen class is its best in yearsThe University of Wisconsin men’s hockey team recently landed a surplus of talent in their 2019 freshman class. The incoming Read…Though Turcotte has had a great experience playing for the Badgers this season, his decision to play came as a result of choosing not to play for the Kings. This was a huge decision for someone who has been surrounded by hockey his entire life. His reasoning, however, was not related to avoiding his inevitable leap to play professional hockey, but rather because of his relationships with current Badger teammates. “Just the guys that are here, a lot are really great teammates, and going with Cole and Owen — it was an easy decision,” Turcotte said. Even with this decision, Turcotte is aware that his NHL jump is looming, and he acknowledged that getting stronger and more prepared for the NHL is a major factor on his mind. Moving forward, improvements can come in numerous ways for Turcotte. This means improving his goal scoring, shooting and 200-foot game in order to bring these attributes to Los Angeles, where there already lies an elite 200-foot centerman and one of Turcotte’s favorite players, Anže Kopitar.“As far as goal scoring goes, just scoring from different areas on the ice, but using my shot more,” Turcotte said. “I’m more of a playmaker, so I think using my shot can be a dual threat. I know what I can do offensively, but I think you want to be out there in all situations, and in order to do that, you need to have a good 200-foot game.”To develop his 200-foot game, Turcotte strives to be more relied on defensively, and to improve his faceoff percentage.Men’s Hockey: Inconsistencies continue to plague Wisconsin against MinnesotaThe No. 19 University of Wisconsin men’s hockey team (6-7-1, 1-4-1-1 Big Ten) struggled immensely against the University of Minnesota Read…His ability to develop as a player has changed drastically over time, as he had to find ways to succeed against players who were much bigger, stronger and older. “When you’re a kid, it’s a lot more separated on talent and you can kind of get away with it if you are more talented, but then ever since the U.S. teams and college … there’s not that much of a difference from each player,” Turcotte said. The sudden even playing field has caused Turcotte to work much harder than he ever had before.Turcotte explained that playing in college has required an adjustment period, but he feels that the high level of competition is crucial to his career.“I think just working hard and trying to get better every day can really go a long way because there’s not much separation from guys,” Turcotte said. “Everyone’s a lot older and physically more mature, and, especially in college, there’s 25-year-olds. That’s crazy. I’m 18, so playing against guys that are way older, I can only help and see how much of a physical advantage they have, but you have to adapt, and it can only make you better.”Men’s Hockey: Crease Creatures craziest student section in hockeyThe No. 7 University of Wisconsin men’s hockey team (4-2-0, 0-0-0 Big Ten) has impressed in a major way through Read…Next time you’re at a Badger hockey game, watch out for No. 15 on the ice, as he may be an NHL star in the making.last_img read more

Africa Cup of Nations 2017: Riot stops play in qualifier

first_imgA riot stopped play in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Sunday as fans threw missiles and police fired tear gas into the stands. The unrest broke out when a goal was awarded to Guinea Bissau after 81 minutes, with Kenya’s players arguing the ball had not crossed the line.Play was halted for 30 minutes as Kenya fans threw missiles at the Guinea Bissau bench and the fourth official.Kenya, who were beaten 1-0 in Nairobi, could face sanctions. The result takes Guinea Bissau to the top of their qualifying group and leaves Kenya with little chance of qualifying for next year’s tournament.Elsewhere in Group E, Congo and Zambia drew 1-1 in an identical scoreline to their result in Ndola on Wednesday. Jordan Massengo put Congo ahead in Brazzaville just after half-time, with Winston Kalengo equalising in the 72nd minute.Guinea Bissau lead the group on seven points, one point ahead of both Congo and Zambia, with Kenya bottom, six points off the top.In Sunday’s first Nations Cup qualifier, Ghana lost their 100% record in Group H with a 0-0 draw in Mozambique. The result in Maputo leaves the Black Stars on 10 points, four ahead of Mauritius, the surprise package in Group H. Mauritius could close that gap with a win over Rwanda in Kigali on Tuesday.West Bromwich Albion’s Stephane Sessegnon scored twice for Benin in Cotonou as the hosts beat South Sudan 4-1 to go top of Group C. Mickael Pote and Jodel Dossou were also on target for Benin, with Atak Lual grabbing a consolation for the away side.Mali could regain the lead in that group if they beat Equatorial Guinea in Malabo on Monday.Comoros, who got their first win in a major qualifying competition when they beat Botswana at home on Thursday, were brought back down to earth with a 2-1 defeat in the return fixture.Comoros looked like they might complete a double over their opponents when Mchangama Youssouf scored just before the break. But second-half goals from Galabgwe Moyana and then Joel Mogorosi gave Botswana the win which puts them level on points with the top two, Uganda and Burkina Faso, who play each other in Kampala on Tuesday. Justin Upton reflects on a rollercoaster first full season with Angels

first_img Angels’ poor pitching spoils an Albert Pujols milestone Angels’ Mike Trout working on his defense, thanks to Twitter Upton, 31, said some of his 12 big league seasons have been like that, and he’s not sure why.Sign up for Home Turf and get exclusive stories every SoCal sports fan must read, sent daily. Subscribe here.He also had no explanation for what has been a consistent area of struggle. Upton has hit .199 with a .657 OPS with runners in scoring position.“I can’t put a finger on that,” he said. “Every time I felt I was in a hitter’s count, a guy makes a great pitch or I mis-hit something. Things just didn’t go my way with guys in scoring position, but somehow I still drove in runs. It’s just one of those weird things.”Upton has 85 RBIs, which is tops on the team.Manager Mike Scioscia said there was some bad luck involved with Upton’s issues with runners in scoring position. “He hit some balls hard (that were caught),” Scioscia said. “He probably hasn’t been as productive as he’s been in the past in that regard, but he’s had a great season.”Upton was the Angels cleanup hitter when the season began, expected to bat between Mike Trout and Albert Pujols. As the year developed, he will end up as the primary No. 5 hitter, behind Trout and Shohei Ohtani. When Pujols is back next year, it seems likely he would hit behind Upton, which could be fifth or sixth, depending on whether Trout is No. 2 or No. 3.“I guess that’s the plan,” Upton said of having all four hitters healthy in the middle of the lineup. “It didn’t work out for us. Hopefully, next year is a little different.”Upton has four years left on the contract extension he signed last year, getting an extra year on his deal in exchange for passing on his opt-out. Upton is due to make $18 million next year, and $90 million over the next four years. He seems to have no regrets about returning to the Angels instead of becoming a free agent.“This is a great clubhouse,” he said. “We had injuries and didn’t play as well as we wanted to, but people are going to come in prepared again next year to chase our goal of getting to the postseason. I enjoyed the season as much as you could. I enjoy the guys. I enjoy the atmosphere. I’m looking forward to next year.”ALSOMatt Shoemaker will start the season finale on Sunday, regardless of whether the game has any playoff implications for the Oakland A’s. Scioscia had a choice of Shoemaker, Felix Peña or even a crew of relievers. He opted against Peña because he’s already thrown 126 innings between the minors and majors, about double what he threw last year as a reliever in the Cubs’ system. Peña finishes his season with a 4.18 ERA, including 4.00 in his 17 starts. Scioscia said Peña “had a great run for us. He learned a lot.”UP NEXTAngels (LHP Tyler Skaggs, 8-9, 3.91) vs. A’s (TBA), Saturday, 6 p.m., Fox Sports West, KLAA (830 AM)Related Articles Angels offense breaks out to split doubleheader with Astros Angels’ Shohei Ohtani spending downtime working in outfield ANAHEIM — Although Justin Upton will end his season with his accustomed numbers, he would have preferred a smoother ride.“I typically like to do it in a different fashion than I did, but that’s how things were,” the Angels outfielder said with a shrug.Upton is hitting .259 with 30 home runs and an .813 OPS after Friday’s game. Standoff Between Protesters, Officers Ends in Wellington

Palmdale district to recruit bilingual teachers in Mexico

first_imgPalmdale previously recruited teachers from Canada in the mid-1990s and Spain in 2000. The recruiting trip to Spain caused some controversy as the board split 3-2 on a vote to authorize it, with some trustees complaining that the district could find qualified bilingual teachers closer to home. At Tuesday’s board meeting, the vote was 5-0. Trustee Sheldon Epstein, who was in the minority in the 2000 vote, said he didn’t have a problem recruiting teachers in Mexico. District officials said they are looking in the United States for teachers, but can’t find the number and type of teachers they need. There is a shortage of teachers in general, especially among those with the expertise to teach math and science, officials said. “We do find qualified instructors in the U.S. We are currently recruiting in New York, the Northwest and Midwest, but they don’t typically have bilingual people in certain areas,” Gallizzi said. PALMDALE – The Palmdale School District will recruit bilingual teachers from Mexico under a program aimed at fostering mutual understanding between the U.S. and other countries. The goal is to find nine teachers who would work at Los Amigos School, where students are taught in both Spanish and English, and at the district’s junior highs in the 2007-08 school year. “We are short teachers. We are short bilingual teachers. This is one place to find them,” interim Superintendent Roger Gallizzi said. The Exchange Teacher Visitor Program is the result of a 1961 federal law that aims to increase mutual understanding between Americans and people of other countries through educational and cultural exchanges, which assist the U.S. State Department in furthering its foreign policy objectives, a district staff report said. Epstein said Palmdale is competing with other areas that have growing Latino student populations. “It’s a case of supply and demand, and the supply is low. We have to look at other options,” Epstein said. The Mexican teachers must possess the proper teaching credentials in their own country and obtain a California credential once they arrive here. They also must take a language-proficiency exam to show fluency in English and pass a basic skills test for new teachers. A worker visa also is required, Gallizzi said. The Palmdale district will help those chosen find a place to live and familiarize them with the community, said Pauline Winbush, director of certificated personnel. Diego Costa – I don’t go looking for trouble, but I’m no cry baby with trouble finds me

first_img Chelsea striker Diego Costa Chelsea bad boy striker Diego Costa insists he doesn’t go around looking for trouble, but says he is no ‘cry-baby’ when trouble finds him. The 27-year-old is famed for his combative style of play and his apparent skill of rubbing up his opponents the wrong way on the pitch. His antics have landed him in trouble in the past, with the Spain international handed three-match bans for tussles with Liverpool’s Emre Can and, this season, Arsenal duo Laurent Koscielny and Gabriel Paulista.Manager Jose Mourinho has often come out in defence of his front-man, but Costa has spoken of the respect he has for his opponents and rejects suggestions he runs around the pitch looking for a scrap. When asked if there is anything he fears, the Chelsea star said: “Just God.“I think If you fear someone, another person it is not a good thing. I respect. I have respect for my parents, my wife, my daughter and God.“But respect, not fear. I don’t have fear. I have respect. For example, if there is a massive guy and he comes over and we are going to have a problem, I don’t get involved with him.“I don’t fear him but I respect him.“Am I as tough off the pitch as I am on it? Not really no. I am completely different off the pitch.”A sensation following his £32million arrival from Atletico Madrid last summer, Costa netted 20 Premier League goals in his debut campaign, but the hard man forward’s recent struggles up front are perhaps reflected in Chelsea’s struggles at a team, having netted just twice as the defending champions sit 12th in the table. But Costa insists, while others berate his aggressive style and criticise his lack of form, he is ‘not really bothered’ by the words of his critics.“I have 100 per cent support from my manager, from the club and from the Chelsea fans,” Costa told the Daily Mirror.“So other people, other opinions, I don’t care, I’m not really bothered. I will not change unless my manager or the people from my club or my supporters tell me so.“No, I don’t need to change. Because I have done nothing wrong. “During my football career, many, many times other players have done stuff to me, like kick me but I am not a cry baby.” 1last_img read more

DECISION ON DONEGAL RADIO LICENSE EXPECTED ON MONDAY

first_imgThe nerves are tingling between the two consortiums bidding for the North Donegal radio license. The license is, of course, held by Highland Radio which has the biggest local listenership across Ireland. But they are now under pressure by DLFM, a consortium fronted by former Highland boss Charlie Collins. It is now expected that an announcement on the license will be made on Monday. Both sides presented their pitch at the Radisson Hotel earlier this year. But there is no indication from the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland as to how the license will go.  DECISION ON DONEGAL RADIO LICENSE EXPECTED ON MONDAY was last modified: June 21st, 2014 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:Charlie CollinsDLFMdonegalHighland Radioradio licenselast_img read more

BASKETBALL: LETTERKENNY SUMMER LEAGUE – WEEK 2

first_imgAll six teams returned to the court this past week in the Letterkenny Basketball Summerleague, which gave fans some very tight games with plenty of flashy highlights. Game 1: Magic 50 – Lakers 30The first game of the week saw two big teams in action. The game started score for score with Norman Mauricio and Eduardas Diktonas (Lakers) scoring back-to-back lay-ups. Mark Cannon (Magic) continued attacking the basket and converted his free throws at the line. The score was close right up until the half, in which Magic held a slim one-point lead. However, the second half was totally different. Despite great efforts from Padraig Barrett, Lakers struggled to get up and down the court. This led to numerous fast break easy scores for Magic, with one spectacular play in particular that saw Edvinas Dapsys score a flashy one handed alley-oop. Magic ran out comfortable winners 50 – 30. Top Scorers: (Magic) Erik Dragunas 13pts and (Lakers) Padraig Barrett 11pts.Game 2: Clippers 49 – Celtics 55 Celtics got off to a blistering start and led from start to finish in this one. They jumped into a 17-3 lead through good teamwork, leading to easy post scores for Renatas Jocys and Ejder Akkoc. Clippers called a time-out and had an uphill struggle ahead if they were to make this a game. They fought hard through the high-scoring duo of Steve Cannon and Shaun Wogan and continually reduced the deficit, slowly but surely. Pete Rose caught fire in the second half as he knocked down four three-pointers to seal the game for the Celtics by only six points, despite the Clippers late push. Top Scorers: (Clippers) Shaun Wogan 22pts and (Celtics) Pete Rose 18pts.Game 3: Bulls 40 – Thunder 42The last game of the Tuesday night match-ups was by far the closest game and went right down to the wire. Both teams were searching for their first win of the Summerleague and it was clear that both teams had this in the back of their minds as they battled hard all game. Ger Murray (Bulls) got into the action straight away, using his quickness to get to the basket for scores. He was evenly matched by Billy Banda (Thunder) who used his strength and footwork to create a lot of scoring opportunities. There were a few highlight plays from this game, one being Pauric Carr’s monster block off the board for the Bulls. Thunder’s Padhraic Coll was clutch at the end of this game with a huge shot, followed directly by two pressure free throws. Arnold Custodio tied the game with a big three, but Aidan Campbell hit two free throws in the dying seconds to win it by two for Thunder. Top Scorers: (Bulls) Ger Murray 19pts and (Thunder) Billy Banda 18pts.Game 4: Clippers 42 – Thunder 38Clippers began this game in superb form and punished the Thunder on the break time and time again, where they ran in lay-up after lay-up to open up a huge 22-3 lead early on. Paul Murray and Shaun Wogan (Clippers) must have felt it was lay-up practice because they used their speed to run the court and were rewarded at the other end. Rory O’ Brien (Clippers) had a lovely block, sending the ball way back. Billy Banda tried hard to keep his Thunder team in it but faced a huge halftime deficit of 36-12. Something changed in the second half – Thunder upped their defensive intensity and completely shut down the young Clippers, holding them to six points in the entire second half. Conor Dorrian played well in the post, while Mike Foy grabbed a few charges to bring his team within two-points in the last seconds. Steve Cannon and Amer Quiambao hit from the free-throw line to hold on for the win. Top Scorers: (Clippers) Shaun Wogan 13pts and (Thunder) Billy Banda 20pts.Game 5: Magic 47 – Celtics 45This game went back and forth from start to finish. Erik Dragunas and Zak Balogun started brightly for the Magic on offense. Celtics pushed the ball and attacked Magic right from the off and getting them into foul trouble early. Daniel McArdle set a Summerleague record by fouling out in the opening five minutes of the game for the Magic, leaving them with just five players to play the rest of the game. Ejder Akkoc and Paul McHugh worked well with each other inside for the Celtics. Joseph King (Magic) came up big in the second half, and Mark Cannon finished strong on offense in the dying minutes to ensure his Magic team took a two-point lead with half a minute to go. Celtics missed two shots in the last five seconds that would have won the game for them. Both shots just rimmed out and Magic held on to keep their unbeaten streak alive and secure their spot at the top of the table for another week. Top Scorers: (Magic) Mark Cannon 20pts and (Celtics) Ejder Akkoc 14pts.Game 6: Bulls 42 – Lakers 39 The last game of the week saw the Bulls grab their first Summerleague win but they had to dig deep and were pushed to the buzzer. Arnold Custodio scored a quick seven points for the Bulls early in the game. Lakers answered through the strong post play from Brian Gribben. Each team went on little runs with multiple lead changes, which kept things interesting. Kieran O’ Neill (Lakers) had a great offensive game pouring in 23points out of 39 in total as he attacked the rim and converted his shots, but he needed help from his team-mates if they were to grab a win here. Mindaugas Bartasius and Troy Morris held their nerve at the free-throw line in the end, and Lakers missed a shot on the buzzer that would have tied the game and sent it into a free-throw shootout. Bulls held on in an exciting game and finish to week two. Top Scorers: (Bulls) Arnold Custodio 9pts and (Lakers) Kieran O’ Neill 23pts.These teams will take the court every Tuesday and Thursday in Aura between 8-10pm, so if anybody is interested in coming down to watch the games, then they are very welcome free of charge. There are three games each Tuesday and the same on Thursday so there is plenty of action on display. 1966; England’s only World Cup Triumph

first_img Tags: World Cup 1966 The 1966 FIFA World Cup, the eighth staging of the World Cup, was held in England from 11 to 30 July. England was chosen as host of the 1966 World Cup in Rome, Italy on 22 August 1960, over rival bids from West Germany and Spain.Thirty-one African nations boycotted the tournament to protest a 1964 FIFA ruling that required the three second-round winners from the African zone to enter a play-off round against the winners of the Asian zone in order to qualify for the World Cup, as they felt winning their zone was enough in itself to merit qualification. They also protested against the readmission of South Africa to FIFA in 1963, despite its expulsion from CAF due to the Apartheid Regime in 1958.South Africa was subsequently assigned to the Asia and Oceania qualifying group before being disqualified after being suspended again due to pressure from other African nations in October 1964. Despite this, after FIFA refused to change the qualifying format, the African teams decided anyway to pull out of the World Cup until at least one African team had a place assured in the World Cup, something which was put in place for the 1970 FIFA World Cup and all subsequent World Cup finals.England captain Bobby Moore lifts the World Cup in 1966The format of the 1966 competition remained the same as 1962: 16 qualified teams were divided into four groups of four. Each group played a round-robin format. Two points were awarded for a win and one point for a draw, with goal average used to separate teams equal on points. The top two teams in each group advanced to the knockout stage. In the knockout games, if the teams were tied after 90 minutes, 30 minutes of extra time were played. For any match other than the final, if the teams were still tied after extra time, lots would be drawn to determine the winner. The final would have been replayed if tied after extra time. In the event, no replays or drawing of lots was necessary. The 1966 World Cup had a rather unusual hero off the field, a dog called Pickles. In the build-up to the tournament, the Jules Rimet trophy was stolen from an exhibition display. A nationwide hunt for the icon ensued. It was later discovered wrapped in newspaper as the dog sniffed under some bushes in London. The FA commissioned a replica cup in case the original cup was not found in time. This replica is held at the English National Football Museum in Manchester, where it is on display. The draw for the final tournament, taking place on 6 January 1966 at the Royal Garden Hotel in London was the first ever to be televised, with England, West Germany, Brazil and Italy as seeds. The opening match took place on Monday 11 July. With the exception of the first tournament, which commenced on 13 July 1930, every other tournament (up to and including 2018) has commenced in May or June. The final took place on 30 July 1966, the 36th anniversary of the first final. This remains the latest date that any tournament has concluded. The reason for the unusually late scheduling of the tournament appears to lie with the outside broadcast commitments of the BBC, which also had commitments to cover Wimbledon (which ran between 20 June and 2 July) and the Open Golf Championship (6 to 9 July).First Round:1966 was a World Cup with few goals as the teams began to play much more tactically and defensively. This was exemplified by Alf Ramsey’s England as they finished top of Group 1 with only four goals, but having none scored against them. They also became the first World Cup winning team not to win its first game in the tournament. Uruguay were the other team to qualify from that group at the expense of both Mexico and France. All the group’s matches were played at Wembley Stadium apart from the match between Uruguay and France which took place at White City Stadium. In Group 2, West Germany and Argentina qualified with ease as they both finished the group with 5 points, Spain managed 2, while Switzerland left the competition after losing all three group matches. FIFA cautioned Argentina for its violent style in the group games, particularly in the scoreless draw with West Germany, which saw Argentinean Rafael get sent off and suspended for the next match. In the northwest of England, Old Trafford and Goodison Park played host to Group 3 which saw the two-time defending champions Brazil finish in third place behind Portugal and Hungary, and be eliminated along with Bulgaria. Brazil were defeated 3–1 by Hungary in a classic encounter before falling by the same score line to Portugal in a controversial game. Portugal appeared in the finals for the first time, and made quite an impact. They won all three of their games in the group stage, with a lot of help from their outstanding striker Eusebio, whose nine goals made him the tournament’s top scorer.Group 4, however, provided the biggest upset when North Korea beat Italy 1–0 at Ayresome Park, Middlesbrough and finished above them, thus earning qualification to the next round along with the Soviet Union. This was the first time that a nation from outside Europe or the Americas had progressed from the first stage of a World Cup: the next would be Morocco in 1986.Quarter-finals, semi-finals, and third-place match:The quarter-finals provided a controversial victory for West Germany as they cruised past Uruguay 4–0; the South Americans claimed that this occurred only after the referee (who was Jim Finney, from England) had not recognised a handball by Schnellinger on the goal line and then had sent off two players from Uruguay: Horacio Troche and Hector Silva. It appeared as though the surprise package North Korea would claim another major upset in their match against Portugal at Goodison Park, when after 22 minutes they led 3–0. It fell to one of the greatest stars of the tournament, Eusebio, to change that. He scored four goals in the game and Jose Augusto added a fifth in the 78th minute to earn Portugal a 5–3 win.Meanwhile, in the other two games, Ferenc Bene’s late goal for Hungary against the Soviet Union, who were led by Lev Yashin’s stellar goalkeeping, proved little more than a consolation as they crashed out 2–1, and the only goal between Argentina and England came courtesy of England’s Geoff Hurst. During that controversial game (for more details see Argentina and England football rivalry), Argentina’s Antonio Rattin became the first player to be sent off in a senior international football match at Wembley. Rattín at first refused to leave the field and eventually had to be escorted by several policemen. After 30 minutes England scored the only goal of the match. This game is called el robo del siglo (the robbery of the century) in Argentina. All semi-finalists were from Europe. The venue of the first semi-final between England and Portugal was changed from Goodison Park in Liverpool to Wembley, due to Wembley’s larger capacity. This larger capacity was particularly significant during a time when ticket revenue was of crucial importance. Bobby Charlton scored both goals in England’s win, with Portugal’s goal coming from a penalty in the 82nd minute after a handball by Jack Charlton on the goal line. The other semi-final also finished 2–1: Franz Beckenbauer scoring the winning goal with a left foot shot from the edge of the area for West Germany as they beat the Soviet Union.Portugal went on to beat the Soviet Union 2–1 to take third place. Portugal’s third place remains the best finish by a team making its World Cup debut since 1934. It was subsequently equaled by Croatia in the 1998 tournament.London’s Wembley Stadium was the venue for the final and 98,000 people attended. After 12 minutes 32 seconds Helmut Haller put West Germany ahead, but the score was leveled by Geoff Hurst four minutes later. Martin Peters put England in the lead in the 78th minute; England looked set to claim the title when the referee awarded a free kick to West Germany with one minute left. The ball was launched goal-ward and Wolfgang Weber scored, with England appealing in vain for handball as the ball came through the crowded penalty area. With the score level at 2–2 at the end of 90 minutes, the game went to extra time. In the 98th minute, Hurst found himself on the score-sheet again; his shot hit the crossbar, bounced down onto the goal line, and was awarded as a goal. Debate has long raged over whether the ball crossed the line, with the goal becoming part of World Cup history; Ian Reid and Andrew Zisserman claim to prove that the ball did not cross the line. England’s final goal was scored by Hurst again, as a celebratory pitch invasion began. This made Geoff Hurst the only player ever to have scored three times in a World Cup final. BBC commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme’s description of the match’s closing moments has gone down in history: “Some people are on the pitch. ‘They Think it’s all Over’ … [Hurst scores] It is now!”.England’s total of eleven goals scored in six games set a new record low for average goals per game scored by a World Cup winning team. The record stood until 1982, when it was surpassed by Italy’s twelve goals in seven games; in 2010 this record was lowered again by Spain, winning the Cup with eight goals in seven games. England’s total of three goals conceded also constituted a record low for average goals per game conceded by a World Cup winning team. That record stood until 1994, when it was surpassed by Brazil’s three goals in seven games. Spain again lowered the record to two goals by conceding them during the group stage and then shutting out its four knockout stage opponents by 1–0 scores.England received the recovered Jules Rimet trophy from Elizabeth II and were crowned World Cup winners for the first timeIn this World Cup edition, the national anthems were played only in the final. They were not played in the earlier matches because the organisers (Fifa and the FA) feared that North Korea’s presence – a socialist country that is not recognized by United Kingdom – in the World Cup would cause problems with South Korea. An office memo of the Foreign Office months before the finals stated that the solution would be “denying the visas to North Korean players”.With nine goals, Eusébio was the top scorer in the tournament. In total, 89 goals were scored by 47 different players, with two of them credited as own goals.Portugal’s Eusebio was the top scorer in 1966 World CupComments last_img read more

Mixed Emotions

first_imgReflections on Todd & Peggy Podcast #1By Ellie McCann, Extension EducatorThe audio recording below is the first part of a conversation with Todd, a lieutenant commander in the United States Navy Nurse Corps, and his wife Peggy, an elementary school teacher. Peggy and Todd generously shared some of their experiences as a military family, to help those of us serving military families have a better understanding of what they go through. Below the recording you’ll find a blog post reflecting on this part of Todd and Peggy’s story. This is part 1 – Mixed Emotions.Audio Player/files/2016/02/MFLN-FT-Todd-and-Peggy-1.mp300:0000:0000:00Use Up/Down Arrow keys to increase or decrease volume.Listen to Todd & Peggy’s story, Podcast #2  Mixed EmotionsBoth parents, Todd and Peggy, had different things to get ready before the deployment. Peggy’s preparation focus was on planning things for the family such as the details of the calendar of events to who would mow the lawn and shovel the snow. This was happening while the other parent, Todd – the service member – planned for his year away. Together, they upgraded their automobiles. Financial things were all in place and updated such as power of attorney, living will and other important documents. Peggy, who remained at home, began to feel that Todd was preparing for just one person and how unfair that was while she would be at home taking care of all the families’ responsibilities. As Peggy and Todd were doing their individual planning, they started to ‘get at each other’, which as Peggy reflects, may have been a way for them to prepare to be separated from each other. A mixture of emotions was felt by both during this preparation. As a parent myself, I associate these feelings with the summer before I launched my oldest child. She and I were at each other constantly during that summer. We were both nervous in our own way and were trying to take care of last minute things. Parents have different things to get ready than their child and both need to wrap their heads around individual parts. It was really an odd sense of losing control as a mom that I had never felt. The stress I felt about all the things I needed to make sure were in place came out and was part of our tense moments. Looking back now, I truly feel that what we experienced that summer was some sort of way for us to both prepare for being away from each other for the first time. I was ready to move her in when the time came and she was more than ready to begin her next life chapter. A mixture of emotions was felt by both during this preparation time.Todd and Peggy also shared that unexpected changes, like a change in deployment plans, can also add stress and create a mixture of emotions. When a family has done so much to prepare for a long deployment and orders get cancelled, one might think that there would immediately be feelings of relief. This isn’t always the case. This type of drastic change of plans can cause a mixture of emotions such as confusion, anxiety, misunderstanding, and/or worry because all of the preparation that had taken place for the family during the deployment was stripped from under them like a blanket of security they had built. These types of events that happen prior to deployment can cause a wide range of feelings for the service member and their family.Ellie McCann is a member of the Military Families Learning Network Family Transitions team and an Extension Educator with the University of Minnesota, Extension Center for Family Development. Ellie is also the parent of three adult daughters.last_img read more

Iran says European plan to bypass US sanctions falls short

first_imgTehran: The mechanism set up by European powers to help Iran skirt US sanctions will be of limited use but it has highlighted a welcome distance between Washington and its allies, Tehran’s top diplomat said Monday. The EU said Friday after a crisis meeting aimed at salvaging a landmark 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers that the INSTEX payment mechanism was finally “operational” and that the first transactions were being processed. Also Read – Turkey preparations for Syria offensive ‘completed’ “Although it does not meet the demands of the Islamic republic, (or) Europeans’ obligations… it has a strategic value (in showing) that the closest allies of the United States are distancing themselves from America in their economic relations,” Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said. “This will certainly have long-term effects,” he added, during a speech broadcast on state television. Britain, France and Germany launched the special payment system in late January after US President Donald Trump abruptly quit the nuclear deal last year and reimposed sweeping sanctions on Iran. Also Read – Imran Khan arrives in China, to meet Prez Xi Jinping It is seen as key to EU efforts to preserve the deal but its promise of easing the bite of US sanctions, which have cut Iran off from the international financial system and decimated its oil exports, has been slow to materialise. In response to the US measures, Tehran announced in May it would abandon some of the limits on its nuclear activities imposed under the deal, threatening to give up two others by July 7 if the other signatories to the accord do not help it break the US embargo. INSTEX was designed to only support transactions in the pharmaceutical, medical and agricultural-food sectors.last_img read more

Trudeau denies claims PMO pressured justice minister to help SNCLavalin avoid prosecution

first_imgThe Globe reports that SNC-Lavalin repeatedly lobbied Justin Trudeau’s aides for a deal and Trudeau’s office leaned on Wilson-Raybould to make it happen. No such agreement was ever reached and Wilson-Raybould was moved to be minister of veterans affairs in a January cabinet shuffle.Meantime, Trudeau is denying the serious claims being levelled in the report.“At no time did I or my office direct the current or previous attorney general to make any particular decision in this matter,” he told reporters on Thursday. The Prime Minister repeats that the allegations in the Globe article are false. Says neither he, nor anyone in his office directed the Attorney General on this case. Was asked if there was any pressure or influence, as opposed to direction. Repeats his answer #cdnpoli— Cormac Mac Sweeney (@cmaconthehill) February 7, 2019Conservatives respondCalling the reports “disturbing”, Opposition leader Andrew Scheer says the prime minister needs to come clean immediately, and believes Trudeau’s answers today fall short of him doing so.“What’s perhaps even more shocking, however, is that the prime minister himself appears to have fired his own attorney general for refusing to bow to his demands,” Scheer said. “We’ve seen this elsewhere on the world stage when leaders dismiss their attorneys general for defying their orders.”Scheer adds “nothing short of full disclosure” will be accepted. When asked whether Scheer believes Trudeau’s claims that the allegations are false, the federal Conservative leader said “it obviously sounded like those words were written by a lawyer, not the prime minister’s own words.”Scheer says it sounds like Trudeau’s careful answer today was written by a lawyer #cdnpoli— Cormac Mac Sweeney (@cmaconthehill) February 7, 2019Scheer says his party will explore every option if Trudeau “continues to fail to be transparent with Canadians.”Former judge suggests criminal investigation may be warrantedIt hasn’t taken long for someone to suggest a criminal investigation needs to be done if these reports are true.A former judge who now teaches law at UBC — Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond — says, if nothing else, an investigation would restore public confidence in the justice ministry in the wake of the shocking report.“Minister Wilson-Raybould, not only is she an extremely competent individual, she was Canada’s first Indigenous attorney general, and I was concerned when she was moved from that position that there was something of a whisper campaign out of the centre of government that she was not competent or she was not a team player.”Turpel-Lafond believes Wilson-Raybould is a person of principle, which is why she’s expecting police to get involved.“Even just to restore public confidence. But I’m just very proud of her as a British Columbian, standing up for the values that are very important in our society which is doing the right thing and making sure the legal process, courts, and prosecutions do their job and keeping your nose out of them so that they can be protected to do their job.”Meantime, SNC-Lavalin says it has no comment on the reports.SNC Lavelin’s response to the allegations of pressure from the PMO on their case: “We have no comment on today’s Globe and Mail article” #cdnpoli— Cormac Mac Sweeney (@cmaconthehill) February 7, 2019 OTTAWA — The Globe and Mail says former justice minister Jody Wilson-Raybould disappointed the Prime Minister’s Office by refusing to help SNC-Lavalin avoid a criminal prosecution. The Quebec engineering and construction giant has been facing legal trouble over allegations it paid millions of dollars in bribes to get government business in Libya, which would be a crime under Canadian law.As justice minister, Wilson-Raybould could have gotten involved in the case against the company by directing federal prosecutors to negotiate a “remediation agreement,” a way of undoing damage without admitting the company itself was at fault for things particular employees did.last_img read more

UN rebuilding refugee camps in Nepal and Chad devastated by fires

22 April 2008The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is rebuilding camps in Nepal and Chad after devastating fires left more than 10,000 refugees homeless in the two countries. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is rebuilding camps in Nepal and Chad after devastating fires left more than 10,000 refugees homeless in the two countries.Last month, a blaze sparked by an oil lamp spread through an area packed with huts – some of which had been built into walkways to accommodate the largely-growing population – in the Goldhap camp in eastern Nepal, leaving 8,000 Bhutanese refugees without homes. No one was killed in the fire, which destroyed nearly 95 per cent of the settlement. The newly-reconstructed camp – rebuilding is expected to be completed in July, ahead of the July monsoon rains – will have fire-retardant thatched roofs and wider spacing between huts to minimize fire hazards, UNHCR spokesperson Ron Redmond told reporters in Geneva today. While UNHCR and its partners have so far received $177,000 to reconstruct the settlement, it still requires more than $400,000 to complete the task. For the past two months, refugees have been living in temporary shelters and with host families, with the most vulnerable of them sheltering in the camp school which survived the blaze. The Nepalese Government, UNHCR and other organizations have provided food, tarpaulins, plastic mats, jerry cans, mosquito nets and emergency cash grants to those made homeless by the fire.To avert the spread of diseases, UNHCR has provided health workers, installed water tanks and latrines and dug waste disposal pits, among other efforts.“Life is slowly returning to normal for Goldhap’s refugees,” Mr. Redmond observed.UNHCR has distributed copies of school notes for students who had lost them in the fire, while those sitting annual exams were hosted in other camps.Over 100,000 Bhutanese refugees have been living in seven settlements in eastern Nepal since the early 1990s.Meanwhile, UNHCR is also assisting with reconstructing the Goz Amer refugee camp in Chad, where a fire on 11 April left 2,100 Sudanese refugees from the war-torn Darfur region homeless. The blaze was started by an untended cooking fire, destroying 270 family huts, and the agency is encouraging refugees to rebuild their homes with bricks instead of straw, stick and mud, which are popular materials in the region. Those affected by the fire are currently being housed in UNHCR family tents.“The main challenge to brick construction is the severe lack of water in eastern Chad,” Mr. Redmond pointed out, given that refugees must use what little water is available as potable water and thus are disincline to waste it.“Therefore, we have urged them to only use water from a nearby wadi [seasonal stream] for brick construction, while water provided in the camp by us should be used for drinking and cooking purposes.”This week, refugees in Djabal camp held a voluntary food collection for those displaced by the fire in the Goz Amer settlement, 45 kilometres away, in a show of solidarity. read more

Walmart Canada scraps online pickup fee in latest shot across grocery bow

Walmart Canada is eliminating the pickup fee from its online grocery service as it braces for increasing competition in a business where profit margins are already razor thin. The retail giant said Tuesday it is cancelling its $2.97 charge for customers who order groceries online and pick them up in stores. While the fee was modest, the company’s internal studies indicated it was a barrier preventing some people from using their online grocery pickup service, said Daryl Porter, vice-president of online grocery for Walmart Canada.“Even though it’s a small dollar amount, it means something,” Porter said.“We want to remove that fee and give people a better chance to try it.”Walmart Canada said that for competitive reasons, it won’t say how much it stands to lose by scrapping the fee and how many customers use its online grocery pickup service. The service launched in Ottawa in July 2015, about a year after Loblaw rolled out a similar program in the Toronto area.Walmart Canada has since expanded it to the Greater Toronto Area, Calgary and Edmonton, and Porter said there are plans to bring it to a fifth market that will be unveiled in about a month.Michael von Massow, an associate professor in food economics at the University of Guelph, said Canadians lag behind Americans when it comes to using online grocery pickup services, though they are catching up and it is a market with potential to grow.He said key for retailers including Walmart is locking in first-time consumers because research shows they are unlikely to switch once they become accustomed to ordering online.“If you can get their first order, you’re more likely to get their second order,” he said.He said he doesn’t believe Walmart’s decision will hurt its bottom line, adding that the increased number of orders from new and existing customers will likely more than make up for any losses. The Walmart announcement comes against the backdrop of Amazon’s US$13.7-billion deal to buy Whole Foods, an acquisition that some industry observers say will upend the supermarket sector in North America.“There is a lot of activity happening out there in the industry but this is something we wanted to do even before the Amazon announcement,” Porter said.Von Massow said online grocery delivery services have struggled to gain market share because people want to “squeeze that avocado” — they don’t want to order produce online. He said he thinks Amazon and Walmart Canada may eventually adopt a “hybrid” shopping model where customers can order their packaged groceries online, pick them up, and buy fresh food such as fruit and vegetables in-store.Walmart Canada introduced groceries in its stores in 2006 and they are now available in about three-quarters of its 411 stores.Loblaw said Tuesday it offers its online pickup grocery service at 142 stores and there are plans to expand it. It charges a fee between $3 and $5 per order, depending on the time and day of pickup.Follow @HealingSlowly on Twitter. read more

Annan calls for enhanced safeguards against nuclear weapons production

“I support the Agency’s continuing efforts to strengthen international safeguards – in particular, to promote conclusion of Additional Protocols by Iran and other states, and to encourage other countries to conclude safeguards agreements with the Agency,” Mr. Annan said in a message to the 47th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna. On Friday, the IAEA gave Iran a 31 October deadline to cooperate and grant unrestricted access, including environmental sampling and unannounced, on-the-spot inspections under an additional protocol in order to corroborate Tehran’s renunciation of nuclear weapons following its earlier failure to report certain materials and activities.”I call for the early resumption of the Agency’s safeguards activities in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea,” Mr. Annan said in the message, delivered on his behalf by the Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs, Nobuyasu Abe.Last Monday, IAEA Director-General Mohamed ElBaradei said the situation in the DPRK, which withdrew from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) early this year and has been reported to have said it would develop nuclear weapons, continued to pose a “serious and immediate” challenge to the nuclear non-proliferation regime. Voicing the hope for achieving adherence to comprehensive safeguards by all countries, including in the Middle East and South Asia, Mr. Annan added: “I also share the conviction of many that efforts in the field of nuclear non-proliferation must be complemented by progress in the field of nuclear disarmament – an issue in which the Agency has an abiding interest.”Advances in these various areas would significantly reduce the threat of nuclear terrorism, as would further progress in the Agency’s efforts to ensure the safety and security of nuclear facilities and prevent the illicit trafficking of nuclear material and radiation sources,” he declared. read more

Valeant CEO on medical leave with pneumonia, company says by The Canadian Press Posted Dec 28, 2015 8:09 am MDT Last Updated Dec 28, 2015 at 8:40 am MDT AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email LAVAL, Que. – Embattled pharmaceutical firm Valeant International says its chief executive is taking a medical leave of absence. The Quebec-based company previously revealed that Michael Pearson was hospitalized last week with what it described as a severe case of pneumonia.Valeant (TSX:VRX) did not offer updates on Pearson’s condition, but says his leave of absence takes effect immediately.Valeant says Pearson’s duties will be shared on an interim basis between General Council Robert Chai-Onn, Company Group Chairman Ari Kellen, and Chief Financial Officer Robert Rosiello.Valeant has been facing a series of scandals that have slashed its stock price by more than half since record highs posted in August. The company is facing a congressional investigation in the U.S. over its pricing practices and has been forced to revise its 2016 outlook after ending a drug distribution agreement with the controversial Philidor mail-order pharmacy.Pearson himself had been facing criticism for Valeant’s share price collapse and recently struck a defiant tone after calls for his dismissal surfaced.“If the board wants to fire me they are welcome to fire me, but until they do we’re going to get through this thing,” Pearson told investors during a Dec. 16 webcast.Valeant said the October split from specialty pharmaceutical partner Philidor Rx Services caused a big short-term disruption to its business that would reduce its expectations for the fourth quarter and 2015 as a whole. But Pearson had also indicated that a new distribution agreement with major U.S. drug store chain Walgreens had set the company back on the road to recovery.Pearson, 56, joined Valeant in 2008 after a 23-year career with the consulting firm McKinsey & Co., for which he served as head of its global pharmaceutical practice. He used a string of acquisitions to turn a relatively small business that made generic drugs and chronic illness treatments into a major pharmaceutical company. Valeant, formerly based in California, combined with Wellbutrin XL maker Biovail in 2010 to form Laval, Quebec-based Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc. Its sales climbed from US$2.46 billion in 2011 to an expected US$10.4 billion to US$10.5 billion for this year.Valeant shares closed at $157.68 on Thursday, the most recent day on which the Toronto Stock Exchange was open for trading. That figure was well up from a 52-week low of $92.65 but well shy of a historic high of $347.84 in August.— With Files from the Associated Press read more

GameStop wants 300 for DiRT 3 Limited Edition

first_imgUsually, when a game gets a limited edition announced you expect to pay $20-$40 more on it, and in return you get something collectible like a book, DVD, and/or some in-game content. But GameStop want a lot more cash for the DiRT 3 Limited Edition, $299.99 to be specific, but in return you will get a Ken Block Gymkhana RC Fiesta. So while the price may seem high, you are getting something a bit special in the form of a ready-to-race remote control sports car from Traxxas.AdChoices广告It has an officially licensed Ford Fiesta body and Ken Block Energy Graphics, as well as officially licensed Volk racing wheels. Out the box it can do 30mph+, but can also be pushed all the way to 50mph+ using its Velineon 380 motor and Traxxas Power Cell NiMH battery coupled with an opitonal Pinion Gear, second battery, and speed connector.Whether this appeals or not depends on your interest in Radio Control cars, but even if you aren’t this actually works out to be a bit of a bargain. The same Ken Block limited edition Fiesta is listed on the Traxxas website with an SSP of $550. So rather than seeing this as an expensive game, you could view it as a very cheap remote controlled racing car. This is sure to be a very limited stock of these bundles, so if you’re interested get pre-ordering. You may actually find the car holds your interest longer than the game, especially if you start pushing it up to 50mph and racing it against others.DiRT 3 is set to be released on May 24 and includes the already previewed Gymkhana mode, the video of which can be viewed above. You can also see a video of the RC in action below:Read more at GameStoplast_img read more

Premier outlines multipronged plan in aftermath of tourist shooting

first_imgFacebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppTurks and Caicos, June 27, 2017 – Providenciales – A new building will be bought to house the CCTV program, more police will be hired to man that CCTV system, government will work with churches on a plan to change the downward social spiral of some of the young men in our society who are opting for a life of crime and coming is a more serious approach to rehabilitation with employment options for former offenders. These were some of the main points coming from a late day media statement by Premier Sharlene Robinson, who was criticized by some for having not yet responded to the shooting, where an Alabama man was on Friday shot in the abdomen, in a suspected robbery while walking in Grace Bay near his resort.   The Turks and Caicos is a low crime destination, and that is why this sort of incident has infuriated residents who are perplexed by the consistent threat these type of reports and incidents place upon the country’s bread and butter industry, tourism. The Premier had some thanks to go around too, including to Interhealth Canada who kept Newman alive, stabilized him in order for him to be medically evacuated.   Premier Robinson called on those who have information in the case to reveal it to Police and said over the next few days, weeks and months her office in tandem with Ministry of Tourism will launch an aggressive positive campaign to counter the negative news which has gone out since the shooting of Newman on Friday.Diamond Public Relations and Social Media based in Miami and Los Angeles, Magnetic Media has found, has been hired by the TCI Tourist Board to assist with this positive messaging.#MagneticMediaNews#CCTVprogram#Premieroutlinesplantocurbcrime Related Items:#CCTVprogram, #magneticmedianews, #Premieroutlinesplantocurbcrime Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApplast_img read more

Clark College to surmount tough times

first_imgDespite the setbacks, the past 12 months saw impressive success by Clark students and faculty members.Knight spent a good portion of his 45-minute address heaping praise on the school’s high achievers and hard workers — from award-winning instructors, to humanitarian aid work by world traveler and 2010 outstanding Clark alumnus Rico Selga, to the league-champion women’s cross country squad. He called out Neil Oldaker, a Clark student who pulled an 80-year-old driver from a burning car that badly torched a nearby McDonald’s restaurant.Knight also awarded special presidential coins to four “exemplary” Clark employees:o Monica Knowles, bookstore manager, praised for her focus on innovative customer service.o Janet Owens, administrative assistant for Corporate and Continuing Education, for leadership and professionalism.o Charlene Montierth, veteran geology professor and a key player in Clark’s recent, extensive accreditation process.o John Maduta, specialist for student advising services, earning high marks for his work ethic and guidance.Knight also saluted the 2010 passing of “two great leaders” for Southwest Washington and the state. He announced new $3,000 student scholarships funded by the Clark College Foundation in the names of Bill Fromhold, former Vancouver state legislator and longtime education professional and advocate, and Tom Koenninger, a Clark alumnus whose unflagging support marked his 57 years as a reporter, editor and columnist for The Columbian.Fromhold once served on the Clark board of trustees, while Koenninger was Clark’s 1990 outstanding alumnus and served more than a decade on the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges. Both men died on Sept. 30.Clark College President Bob Knight used a quirk of the calendar on Thursday to punctuate his annual State of the College address.Among other things, Jan. 20 is dubbed “Penguin Awareness Day.”Google confirms it, Knight noted — before he listed Clark attributes and many of the challenges few “Penguin Nation” students and instructors could miss. The latter includes soaring tuition rates and financial aid needs. Overloaded classrooms and closed class sections. Scarce parking, longer lines, higher stress — and all else that owes to recession-fueled record enrollment of 16,000 students, juxtaposed against budget cuts that jeopardize valued programs and personnel.last_img read more

Washougal mayors trial delayed

first_imgWashougal Mayor Sean Guard’s misdemeanor trial in Cowlitz County on a charge of impersonating a police officer has been postponed, a court official said.Judge Edward Putka scheduled a Nov. 3 motion hearing for Guard during a readiness hearing Thursday afternoon, said Molly Martin, an administrative assistant for Cowlitz County District Court. The new motion date means Guard’s Oct. 21 trial will be moved back to a later date. The reason for the delay was not immediately clear Thursday afternoon, Martin said, noting court was still in session.Guard entered a not guilty plea July 11 to a charge of second-degree criminal impersonation for allegedly using the emergency lights on his city-owned vehicle to get past slower traffic on Interstate 5 near Kelso on Dec. 24, 2010.Vancouver-based attorney Jeffrey Barrar represents Guard, according to court records.last_img read more

Cleanup continues after powerful windstorm

first_imgA day after strong winds raked Clark County and left tens of thousands of people without power, crews continued cleaning up in calmer conditions Friday.Dozens of power outages were still scattered across the county Friday but affected only a fraction of the more than 62,000 customers who were in the dark at one point Thursday night, according to Clark Public Utilities. Crews worked through the night and into the morning, navigating fallen trees, damaged power lines and poles, said utility spokeswoman Erica Erland.“There is still a lot of cleanup and repairs to our system that need to be made,” Erland said.In this case, the utility and others saw it coming. Weather forecasters had predicted the strong windstorm, and issued warnings well in advance of its arrival. To prepare, Clark Public Utilities brought in reinforcements knowing its workers were in for a busy night, Erland said. Among those who helped were public utility crews from Benton, Franklin and Klickitat counties, which largely missed the brunt of the storm.“When we have something forecasted like this wind event … we’ve kind of made those calls already,” Erland said. The storm brought winds as strong as 60 mph in Vancouver, and close to 90 mph on the Oregon Coast, according to the National Weather Service in Portland. Though much weaker, Thursday’s storm followed a similar track as the infamous Columbus Day Storm of 1962, according to the weather service. This week’s wind packed a strong enough punch to topple trees across the county. It came one month after a Veterans Day storm produced similarly strong winds, but caused far fewer power outages. Another potent storm swept through the region in October.last_img read more

Rockstar animator points to October launch for GTA V

first_imgWe first started hearing rumors about GTA V nearing completion back in July last year, but it took until October for Rockstar Games to officially announce the game. At the time, no release date was given, but the developer did follow up the announcement a few days later by releasing the first trailer. We still don’t have a release date, but new evidence has appeared pointing to an October 2012 launch. That evidence comes in the form of a resume and LinkedIn profile for Rockstar North animator Alex O’Dwyer. The resume has since disappeared and LinkedIn profile updated, but not before the GTA V information had been logged.According to O’Dwyer, GTA V will land in stores in October this year. He also lists it as a PS3, Xbox 360, and PC launch, but I doubt very much the PC version will be a same day launch. Historically there has been several months between a console and PC release of a Grand Theft Auto game. Could that be different this time around? The modern GTA series, which I class as starting with GTA III, has typically seen a release happening on consoles in October. The exception to that rule is GTA IV, which arrived in April 2008. Even so, it has been 4 years since that release, and I’m sure Rockstar would prefer to hit the main games selling period of the year in the run up to the holidays. If an October release turns out to be true, I’d expect a few high profile games to push their release back to early 2013, or try to launch a few weeks before GTA V arrives.via Joystiqlast_img read more

Representational image Courtesy: nhpgovin Hailing the Right to Information Act (RTI) as a "great success story" Habibullah added that there were still challenges in the implementation of the 12-year-old law The absence of updated information on websites by ministries both at the central and state level and the maintenance of autonomy and independence of the Central Information Commission and information commissions in states were some of the challenges the former CIC told PTI Under the RTI Act Habibullah said it is expected that every ministry and department under the Centre or state government should not only develop a website but also ensure that it contains a host of routine information The websites are there and a lot of information is there but that "information is unfortunately out of date" he said Every ministry must be "compelled" to disclose all this information which can be disclosed legally he said The government should set up an authority to supervise cannot enforce it" Another challenge for the RTI he asserted was that information commissions were expected to "stand alone" and supposed to be not only autonomous in their functioning but also independent in their decision making "They take no dictates from the government Unfortunately that (independence and autonomy) has not happened" he said adding that the performance of the Central Information Commission on this front had been much better than commissions in the states Asked how the government could influence commissions Habibullah said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had himself mentioned a way out The prime minister has said the government should treat RTI as an instrument by which it can improve itself he noted and suggested that every ministry should have a group or a team that vets the type of information that is sought It will give the government a clear indication of the areas of concern he said "The PM put his finger on it Unfortunately nothing much has happened so far (but) since the PM himself is behind it activists commissioners people working within the establishment should work together in making this a reality" he said Asked whether RTI was being misused by some people and was in certain cases putting a burden on government departments Habibullah said there was some truth in that argument "When I was the CIC I myself would dismiss any complaints of its misuse saying it was being misused because of the lack of information you are putting out If you put out all the information there is no question of misuse" he said "The fact that we (establishment) are not taking the trouble of suo motu disclosing information which is disclosable under the act and unnecessarily applying the Official Secrets Act where it is not really applicable we have made it more difficult for ourselves" he added Exactly a week after he dropped his resignation bomb from Rajya Sabha Navjot Singh Sidhu chose to come out in public to play the victim and the hero as also to narrate his side of the story the reasons for his drastic action and the road ahead He ducked response on the most obvious question that has been playing on everyone’s mind — whether
